STUDIOIII PROJECT

ALLIED STUDIO

The intervention would begin a dialogue with the Harlem Community and the Harlem School of The Art(HSA) students by breaking the established boundaries between disciplines and user and creating alternative and interesting points of access, allowing for a flexible arrangement of spaces which at specific moments capture fragments of activity within the building.Also, Lighting design would focus on gathering space in HSA, Not only introducing more daylight into the space, but providing a transition zone for each group of users and creating a gorgeous lighting effect during the nights.

“From the street, the Harlem School of the Arts is perceived as a gray brick wall punctured only by a curved section at the service entrance, by a large recess for the main entrance and by several windows set well aboove sidewalk. Stil, by a sensitive handling of these few elements in the wall, the over-all message is anything but forbidding. And it scarcely speaks of the high degree of security that was an obvious concern. Especially at the main entrance where story-high reflective metal initials as surmounted by a clerestory view of the main space within, the atmosphere is welcoming-even festive.� ---THE HARLEM SCHOOL OF THE ARTArchitectural Record, May 1979

In my thinking, I would like my intervention to begin a dialogue with the Harlem Community and the HSA students and thus have a conversation between inside and outside, and that is my concept -porosity comes here.

Inspired by a tree canopy, it allows the fresh air, light, winds, and people smoothly flow into HSA, but still, keeps a basic interface in between. It’s neither open nor enclosed; it just starts to welcome public. The large void space in the middle of the building, gathering space, would be a transition area for both ends. By using this idea of porosity, the entire programs will be linked together by the gathering space. It not only provides more free circulation but it starts to penetrate both academic and public. It becomes a transition zone among different users. In addition, the performance stage in the center allows public activities. The lighting in this project will focus on gathering sapce of HSA.

STUDIO II PROJECT

DAYLIGHT STUDIO FINAL PROJECT

This project is aimed to create a comfortable, well-lid and enjoyable space for 24/7 scholar library.Inspired by tangram puzzle which helps to frame the structure of our building. In addition,daylight strategy is to introduce more daylight into the study area from east and north sides. There are several main skylights on the roof which are facing to the north and also most of the east and north façade are made by glass with vertical sun controls due to the sunlight period in the morning and noon in the summer.

This project is intended to provide the opportunity for me to pull together all of my lighting knowledge to date into the design of a realistic project.An area of the first floor adjacent to street to be identified as a “flexible” program space to be assigned a use determined by and unique to the specific client. MFA LIGHTING DESIGN The lighting concept around what Muji describes as Emptiness. This quality is defined by four characteristics: colorlessness,charachterlessness, backgrounding, and reform. In applying these ideas to MUJI’s lighitng, we have chosen to create a hierarchy of these ideals to accentuate two ideals and bring them to the forefront: backgrounding and reform.

We see backgrounding as away to accentuate certain focal points in the programatic and design elements of the space, while maintaing a stable ambient light throughout the rest of the space. This seeks to focus attention to important aspects and products while backgroudning unnecessary information. Furthermore this contrast and backgrounding will help create a path of circulation through the space that fits the program. Secondly we see reform as a way to create an egalitarian office space using subtler contrast. Our aim is to create a vitality through circulation and sightplanes, while not undermining the priniciples of Muji and our client’s aesthetic.

the flexible space for us will be a muji gallery, it’s not the same as usual muji stores in New York, there will not sell products, only for displaying some of muji products, maybe the concept of muji, or the sample products which muji want to address or convey to people. And there is also a research center for people when they want to find out more ideas from muji, they can use this area to find more muji. So when people walk from the Apple store to muji, first they will see the corporation concept wall, and this is high lighting on it, the muji concept, emptiness. Then when they come into the muji, the high lighting on muji red logo, making people realize it is muji. Finally, the high lighting polypropylene wall makes the gallery circulation, and the spotlight on the focus area make people focus on the products only.

The second floor, we use the same idea, but it will be more evenly. They all under our big concept “emptiness” and the subconcept of backgrounding and reform.

the slating system is to hide the lights and it is incorporated into the lighting concept.It is important to note that the light will create spots in the slat, but our hope is to counter balance this with the directional lighting aimed at points of circulation (backrounding). This will create a balance of that allows the eye to focus on circulation. On the 2nd floor there is a more even spacing, so the highlighting will be less noticeable,but we still make lights on the work surface, to achieve the work foot candles.

In selecting a location, consideration should be given to both opportunity to create a desired lighting effect and the practical implementation of that effect.

Supposed Lighting Effect -A bigger shadow due to closer light source -A shadow on white curtain and a dim people due to the light source is stronger inside -When people come in the space,the shadows between fake people and real people will overlapping,making some interaction.

Summary The design concept was soon established at first,but we met some difficulties when practicing in our site.These are including of trying to avoid natural lights into our space,and finding the suitable lamps for specific condition or requirement.The two issues sometimes conflict our ideas,so we started to do more experiments in order to respond our original view:conceal and reveal. Different to Agi32,there are more accurate lighting experiments in setting up our installation,and we know some problems that Agi32 could not do well. Also,searching for the lighting database in Agi32 mode is a challenge,because we have to find the closet lamps for our design in such great amount lamp database. But anyway,it is an opportunity to learn how to design and make installation in person,and of course a good opportunity to make renderings in Agi32 or Photoshop.Most all, we can learn from our group members,and it is very important to us.

Shadows Overlapped II was inspired from a picture that the street light passed through the park fence,making the shadows on the ground.It is the still shadow however,but when I made a movie clip that the car heading lights made a motion shadows on the roads,it was amazing. Then I found that the reflected shadows have different layers and shape,and I was not thought before.I was wondering maybe I can make different layers of shadows as much as I can.also different layers or different layers of shadows.So I made two study models .I was think about the pattern may be affected by the amount of lights passed through in,and angles as well.Then I found it shown different shapes if there was an interference between the light and the object.So what I want to do is making more layers and shadow shape without been seen it. In the final model,I try to achieve my ideal light effect by using 3 variations:various volume of illuminance,different shape of cardboard,and so that I can get the most layer of shadows or overlapping shadows. I realized that the light source passed through the first layer of grilles,and then the second one with changeable size of cardboard,and these shadows split to more sub-shadow because of the obstructions(cardboard).

This experience offers hands on experience to focus lights and learn about exhibition lighting standards used in exhibition design applications. Brief Introduction About This Exhibition U-N-F-O-L-D: These days, breezy conversations by the elevator about the weather soon dip into doldrums of worry about climate. It’s raining again and it’s been a sodden summer. Into this comes U-n-f-o-l-d,an exhibition by artists inspired by some of the most remote,desolate, and beautiful places in the world whose faraway splendor we count on when we despair of things near and close. These are no longer refuges however, their ice and forests linked to our ways of living by ties more weighty than reverie. (Extarcted from exhibition programs booklet)

About This Exoerience: This was a very special and memorable experience for lighting students, especially for the first year students.We all are unfamiliar with the professional lighting field, such as the flood washer or the spotlight, and the variety kinds of light bulbs like cool white halogen or warm white, etc. So we were at a loss when standing in the gallery.The first step that Professor Derek instructed us was to tear all the spotlights on the tracks, and then taught us how do we preceive the space with these artworks? How was the atmosphere that the artists want to convey to the public? After that,we started and seperated into several groups, experiencing and playing the lighting such as to measure the illuminance or to analyze the area supposed to be with light.During the hands-on experiment,I realized that a good exhibition lighting system built on trying and trying.We all did a great job after seven hours working, and the result was definitely awesome!

LIGHTING ASSIGNMENT

Lighting journal exercise is intended to encourage us to experience and look at lighted environments more critically. It should enable us to develop an understanding of the lighting that can be delivered by a particular type of lighting system (lamp and luminaire), as well as develop a “feel� for how well architecture can be rendered (good or bad) by lighting.The photoshop exercise is intend to use software and render the ideal lighting space, no matter interior or exterior.This is basic but important to use photoshop well in order to describe the "story" to the client in the future.

The sketch was done in the lobby of office building.There were lamps installed between the wall and the ceilings,which light the wall but shadows between lamps.Also,the translucent curtains below the ceilings made light passed through it.Finally,the daylight from the end of the picture,making reflective effects on the marble floor.

The soft-white incandescent lamp with the paper lampshade,emitting lighting softly.The shadow occurred at the edge of the lamp and the frame of the lamp was lighter .Moreover, it created shadow when the light passed through the clock.The frame of the door became blurred because it was closed to the lamp,but the tiny and long crack was clear because of the shadow.In the end,the bottom of desk was getting dark from bright to dark.What I want to show in this picture is the radiant curve of the lamp,so I try to draw the hierarchy of the light layers.

The two Photoshop exercises help me learn a lot during the first week of my semester in Parsons.The first one is to imitate the original lighting effect picture into the same one but only with photoshop tools.It is a good exercise for me to copy the color,materials and gradients.The second one is transfer the daylighting building into night lighting.And that is layer coming.I can create the effect by using multiple layers, such as the night scene backgroung,the glare layer at the edge of windows,and people,spotlight,etc.With this skill, I can create the scene renderings I want to make before the lighting devices plan implemented, and it is useful to show the result in advamce to our clients.
