Foreword
Road Trip could be the most exciting assignment in the PhotoJournalism class. During the third weekend of October, from 18 to 20, it is the Road Trip time for class 2013. Long Island is the destination for me. And Patrick McPeak is my partner in the trip. I travelled a lot in America, but this trip is the first time for me to travel with an American. Appreciating to Mr. McPeak, he gives me many American traditions during the trip. How is Long Island? Hm‌ It’s too long. Anyway, open the book and enjoy my photos from Long Island.

October Light The best light in a year is October light. Unfortunately, this October, I had not met a lot October light until the road trip, especially October sunset. I have night classes on Tuesday and Wednesday nights; I stayed in the lab almost the whole day on Thursday; and Friday night is volleyball time for me. I was so jealous about those people who posted some amazing sunset photos in the past two weeks. Anyway, the October light was back to me on my way to the Long Island on Oct. 18. When we took a break in the Vince Lombardi Service Plaza around 6pm, the excitement just burst into my mind under the incredible sunset. It is October Light.

Just Light ... Traffics are still busy under the beautiful sunset shines. But camera could freeze the amazing moment to start the weekend.

Fire Island
Fire Island is a skinny island located in Suffolk County in Long Island, NY. It parallels to the south of the Long Island main area. In 2012, Hurricane Sandy divided into two islands. These two islands are approximately 31 miles long and varies between 520 and 1,300 feet wide.

John J. Fritz Memorial Pier John J. Fritz Memorial Pier officially opened on July 21, 2011 at Smith Point County Park in Long Island, NY. Fritz was a fine family man, a former Soldier in the U.S. Army, a retired New York City Firefighter, a Suffolk County Park Trustee, a fisherman, an avid birder, and a consummate environmentalist. As a Park Trustee, Fritz fought for shared public access to the many areas that Suffolk County owns. His idea was that these places should not only be preserved, but also be available for the multiple recreational purposes that the public enjoys.

Goetsch Matthew, 36, visits the John J. Fritz Memorial Pier every weekend. On the weekend of Oct. 12, Matthew got a 12 or 13 feet long sand shark. Matthew said he started to fish when he was 11 or 12. 16
After 1:30 pm, tranquility around the the John J. Fritz Memorial Pier turns into a buzy scene. There are alone fisherman like Goetsch Matthew, father-and-son fishermen, and a group of families fishing. 17
Not all the fishermen are satisfied with fishing in pier, like this man, he casts out his solitary line into the sea with the tides coming up.

Visitor walks along the seashore beach in Fire Island. October is not a big season, but in summer, it would be a lively place for vaccation.

Even though it is cloudy on Saturday, Oct. 19, some sunshines break through the heavy clounds when it is approaching to 3:00 pm.

Fire Island Lighthouse The current Fire Island Lighthouse began the operation in 1858. It is a 180-foot stone tower on the east side of the Fire Island. And the current one replaces the 74-foot tower originally built in 1826. In 1974, the United States Coast Guard decommissioned the light in 1974.

Montauk
Montauk, a town of East Hampton Suffolk County, is on the South Shore of Long Island. Montauk has been used as Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force base. With six state parks, Montauk is a major tourists place. And it is particularly famous for its fishing. Arrived in Montauk in late Saturday night, we even couldn’t find a hotel to stay. And the staff in the front desk said, after Sunday, Montauk would back to peace again.

As a town particularly famous for fishing, wellgeared fishing enthusiasts begin their Sunday even before the sunrise. With the waves clapping on the seashore rocks, these fishing men repeats to throw the fishing wire into the sea. 32

Montauk Point Lighthouse Montauk Point Lighthouse is the first lighthouse in New York State and it is the fourth oldest active lighthouse in the United States. The tower is about 110-foot high. The construction of Montauk Point Lighthouse was authorized by the Second United Congress, under President George Washington on Apr. 12, 1792.

Walt Whitman

Born on Long Island in 1819, Walt Whitman, is an important poet in American history. In addition to publishing the poems, Whitman also worked as a journalist, a teacher, a government clerk. During the Civil War, Whitman was even a volunteer nurse. Whitman was a part of the transition between transcendentalism and realism, incorporating both views in his works. Whitman is among the most influential poets in the American canon, often called the father of free verse. His work was very controversial in its time, particularly his poetry collection
Leaves of Grass, which was described as obscene for its overt sexuality. Leaves of Grass, as Whitman’s major work, was first published in 1855 with his own money. The work was an attempt at reaching out to the common person with an American epic. He continued expanding and revising it until his death in 1892. Whitman’s sexuality is often discussed alongside his poetry. Though biographers continue to debate his sexuality, he is usually described as either homosexual or bisexual in his feelings and attractions. 39

Walt Whitman’s birthplace is at 246 Old Walt Whitman Rd Huntington Sta, NY. Charles Lipp, the guide in Whitman’s birthplace, introduces this great poet’s information emotionally to the public.

In the house where Walt Whitman was born, all the displays follow the origins. And the most wooden in the second floor of the house were made at that time. Only a few were replaced.

The eastern end of the island is still partly agricultural. In the last 25 years, development of vineyards on the North Fork became a major new industry, replacing potato fields. 49
