Spaceport LA will serve as a hub for future space travel within the greater Los Angeles area. Located south of the Antelope Valley, the site provides optimal flying conditions for takeoff and landing. The spaceport (65,600 sqft) will consist of a large hangar space along with hotel accommodations for passengers, research and training facilities, and office spaces. The strutural system implements longspan wood construction. The roof membrane features a tranlucent shell that stimulates a feel of lightness and flight. The project explores the performance of architecture through the movement of static forms. Movement is defined as a motion with directionality that can be repitituous in nature or other cases, a simple gesture. The per[form]ance of form is applied through the structural system and is directly correlated to its materiality. The user experience is defined through the initial approach from the road. The open and barren site gives emphasis to the Spaceport and creates a sense of anticipation. This anticipation is further developed as the user passes through the front threshold under the structural canopy. It invokes a sense of wonder as the user ascend the stairs into the open lobby, into view of the waffle roof structure. The freeflowing circulation caters to the specific user and strives to maintain a visual connection with the hangar space. There is a continuous interaction of the program pieces to the spaceship.

Fall 2014 Copenhagen, Denmark Public

The new modern Copenhagen Library redefines traditional and static roles of library. Instead it evokes curiosity and draw pedestrians towards and through the interactive spaces while maintaining a visual connection to the cityscape. The steps allow for social interactions between all users creating an experience of encounter and engagement through the transition of spaces and functions.

19

The new modern library of Copenhagen is situated in a unique site with the open waterfront bordering it on one side and the historic Amalie Garden (Amaliehaven) on the other. It is a site surrounded by historical and cultural context that fosters a sense of community. Community is deeply tied to the Danish culture of hygge, which is best expressed as a warm atmosphere created through cozy behavior and interactions. By applying this idea of community to a place where information is collected, organized, preserved, and made accessible redefines the concept of a library. The library becomes an extension of a public living room; a hearth that promotes interaction withinthe community. 20

The skewed orientation of the library creates a point of interest for pedestrians circulating from Amalienborg, towards the Amalie Garden. The introduction of this urban node will create an axis perpendicular to the existing central axis that’s extended from the Marble Church to the Copenhagen Opera House. This new axis could perhaps provide an opportunity for future development south of the garden. In response to the existing circulation on the site, the plaza is sunken into the earth to extend the flow of movement as well as facilitates visual interactions amongst pedestrians. The orientation of the library also maximizes Southern light exposure and views of the water. The view of the waterfront draws people towards the exterior terraces, creating a space of visual contact. The cafÊ can be extended to the exterior, thus engaging the waterfront into the interior. The program itself ranges from very public functions to private as the user transition up through the library. The intention is to create spaces that cater to various users. 22

The Koreatown Elementary School is designed with the intent of addressing the existing corner conditions of the urban site. The bars are skewed as a method of widening the sidewalks to create a tapered urban edge that is interesting and interactive to walk along. The courtyard scheme hosts an auditorium with the use of a shared stage to promote the full pontential of the school’s function. In depth environmental and structural analysis were performed to design for sustainability as well as structural stability. The pattern of the facade aims to prevent solar gain during the summer while creating a unique identity for the school itself.

Winter 2014 Los Angeles, CA Housing

The Silver Lake Housing Project explores the use of a perimeter block typology as a mean of unit organization. The overall scheme strives to address the inherent urban edges of the given site. The corner conditions interact and responts to pedestrians thus creatinga an inter[active] space. The scheme wraps the perimeter and bends at the corner to offset from the street to allow for public open space. Access into the central courtyard is penetrated through the perimeter as a function of circulation. A threshold is created to draw the users in, away from the busy streets. The courtyard scheme is identified as an introverted neighborhood. As part of an urban fabric, it builds unique local character and quality of form. It engages in dialoge with history and context. The individual units imitates the efficiency of a double loaded corridor minus the shared corridor. The mirrored plans allow for natural ventilation, light filteration, and views for each unit without ever compromising the adjacent unit.
