The ski resort of Auris-en-Oisans grew up at 1600 metres on a south-facing mountainside. It not only occupies a fantastic location – opposite the mighty La Meije mountain and summits of the Ecrins National Park – and a lovely sunny position, but also boasts top-notch facilities. Auris was designed for the convenience of its residents, with the vast majority of this ‘ski-in, ski-out’ resort’s accommodation situated near the pistes, shops and restaurants. It’s also a family-friendly resort suitable for all levels of skiing and offers lots of events and activities to ensure the entire family has a great time on holiday.

First opened in 1988, Oz-en-Oisans is one of the four village resorts of Alpe d’Huez Grand Domaine Ski, nestling at an altitude of 1350 metres. It’s the easiest to reach of the Oisans resorts, less than an hour from Grenoble, and offers a perfect mountain setting of countryside, charm and authenticity. Oz has 4,200 beds in chalets and charming little holiday residences that blend in with the surrounding fir forests and are huddled around the pedestrianised centre. The resort is great for families because of its small, intimate feel, warmly welcoming atmosphere and many facilities, including a swimming pool, ice rink, cinema, indoor climbing wall, sports hall and more…

WIZARD OZ CERTIFIED ‘STATION VERTE’ ‘Station Verte’ certification, which Oz was awarded in July 2010, guarantees holidaymakers staying here quality and diversity while ensuring that the resort is completely environmentally friendly. Access to unspoilt countryside is at the centre of local concerns.

SKI AREA There are two easy and fast ways to get from the resort to explore the vast area of the Grand Domaine. One option is the ‘Alpette’ gondola lift, which runs to the pistes in the Oz-Vaujany ski area, taking skiers up to the Dôme des Rousses at 2800 m, and the other is the ‘Poutran’ gondola lift up to Alpe d’Huez and the highest point in the resort of Oz, at 3330 m.

AQUATIC FUN Open to everyone, the ‘Les Cristaux’ swimming pool boasts a large indoor pool and a balneotherapy centre (with sauna, steam bath and jacuzzis), giving visitors a choice of ways to relax. An aquagym session takes place from 10 to 11am for those who want to get in shape before they go skiing.

MUCH MORE

THAN A VILLAGE At an altitude of 1250 metres and facing the entire Alpe d’Huez Grand Domaine Ski area, the village resort of Vaujany is a destination that cleverly combines mountain authenticity with modern facilities. Set in the heart of unspoilt countryside, this mountain village has managed to develop as a tourist resort while retaining its old-world character and working hard to respect the environment. Vaujany offers not only skiing to suit everyone but also a host of activities and opportunities to relax for all the family. In this village of chalets, gîtes and character hotels, the full range of accommodation options is available.

Alpe

« FAMILLE PLUS » Keen to provide the best possible welcome for visiting families, in 2009 Vaujany obtained the ‘Famille Plus Montagne’ label. The village offers family-friendly facilities and quality services to make both children’s and their parents’ lives easier on holiday: childcare from age 6 months, a kids’ club, suitable events and activities, special family offers, and more…

Exclusive: a recreation centre is due to open next to the swimming pool in winter 2012/2013. With an ice rink, bowling alley, day nursery and spa, it will offer even more fun things to do! A village resort in the heart of Alpe d’Huez Grand Domaine Ski, Villard Reculas sits at 1450 metres altitude above Bourg d’Oisans. In a remarkable south-facing location with an amazing panorama of the surrounding peaks, Villard is first and foremost a real mountain village with traditional architecture where authenticity, peace and quiet and skiing go together wonderfully. With a variety of pistes, fast access to the Grand Domaine and traditional gîtes and apartments, it’s the ideal destination for anyone looking for a ‘real’ mountain experience.

Alpe

PIONEERING

As it has grown, the traditional mountain village of Villard Reculas has always remained true to the local architectural style. But this exceptionally typical and authentic village was also a skiing pioneer. Opening its first ski lifts in 1946, together with Alpe d’Huez it formed the first link in the Grand Domaine chain.

Made up of eleven villages dotted around the mountainside between 720 and 1500 metres, La Garde-en-Oisans is one of the steepest settlements in France. But besides this rather unusual characteristic, it is first and foremost a historical mountain village, home to a unique and unspoilt heritage that lovers of history, peace and serenity will relish. La Garde-en-Oisans offers a get-away-from-it-all experience, showing visitors the other side of life in the mountains. Offering traditional accommodation in the form of gîtes, it also has one hotel-restaurant and one restaurant plus two ski lifts.

CAMPANOLOGY Sitting 8 metres up at the top of the church, the bell tower is one of the most remarkable in the Oisans. The fascinating sound made by the two ancient rolling bells inside, accompanied by still-powerful vibrations, is quite enchanting. © DR

SKI AREA

ÉGLISE SAINT-PIERRE

Not obvious but accessible, the entrance to the ski area is by the Maronne chairlift, which feeds into the pistes at Auris-en-Oisans and from there to the skiing at Alpe d’Huez. There is a choice of pistes for skiing back down to Maronne.

This priory and parish church was well known throughout the Middle Ages and up until the French Revolution. A sundial dating from 1677 adorns its southern façade. The next-door Priory with its characteristic Louis XIV façade is currently being renovated. The site is one of outstanding historical interest.

TRADITION On the Route des Grands Cols, half way between Bourg d’Oisans and Les 2 Alpes, Le Freney d’Oisans is a typical mountain village. The nine endearingly traditional hamlets that make up the village are set at between 924 and 1346 metres altitude and enjoy a south-facing location. Visitors staying in the village (Cassini** hotel, mostly in Gîtes de France gîtes) become an integral part of local life. The locals are very welcoming and keen to include their guests in the village goings on.
