FOREWORD

The Young Art Entrepreneurs (YAE!) career development scheme is an initiative by the National Art Gallery to provide young artists with opportunity to enhance their knowledge, skills and ability in order to involve themselves effectively in entrepreneurial activities. It is an innovative step to equip the young artists, who usually are not business-savvy, with important skills to become successful entrepreneurs in the country’s competitive visual art industry. It is hoped that the knowledge and skills acquired at the YAE! training will not only amplify the chances of the young artists to earn sustainable incomes but will also serve as a principal driving force in their own careers throughout their lives. I am confident that the hand-on, intensive coaching method adopted by YAE! programme will empower our young artists to lead more exciting and fulfilling careers in visual art. At the end of the four months training, under the guidance of their coach, the participating artists are expected to launch business ventures of their dreams. These business ventures will not only help sustain the artists themselves but will be valuable additions to the creative industry and society, thereby contributing positively towards the monetization of art in this country. Best wishes and thank you. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohamed Najib bin Ahmad Dawa Director General National Art Gallery Kuala Lumpur

Among the more superstitious, number four, may not be very fortuitous, often associated with misfortune and bad luck. But not so for this cohort. It is luckier than others being the “first to experience recently adopted activities for YAE participants. For instance, they are the first to attend Bootcamp at an awesome villa in Tanah Rimba, Janda Baik, Pahang fostering solidarity and team work. It is also the first to celebrate day one of YAE, at Vertigo, atop the 59th floor of the Kuala Lumpur Banyan Tree, getting a real magnificent view of the city, inspiring everyone in the group, to produce their premier sketches. In addition, this cohort has taken the initiative, to organise an alumni association for YAE graduates. This is the first important step towards uniting past graduates under one umbrella organisation. This cohort plays an important role in a first ever national symposium on art entrepreneurship, held in conjunction with its final exhibition and graduation in June. More importantly, this is the first time that we have so many talents from diverse backgrounds with a variety of skills, in one cohort. You may get a glimpse of a potpourri of talents and diversity of backgrounds from this booklet, that the cohort has produced on their own initiative. It has been my pleasure to work with this cohort, sometimes as a consultant, occasionally as a mentor but very often as a coacWh, to help them realise their full potential in their exciting journey towards becoming art entrepreneurs. Good luck Cohort Four! Dr. Abdul Rahim Said Business Coach and Mentor Young Art Entrepreneurs

“Important issues need to be nurtured in order to encourage acceptance and respect towards differences within people of all religion, race and sex.“

FOOD Email : afisulaiman@yahoo.com Instagram: @afisulaiman Website: afisulaiman.wixsite.com/afoodintroduction AFI finds a gap in the market, which is that children are not exposed to important and heavy issues such as racism, discrimination, sexism, and many more until they grow older. More often, they gain this knowledge from unsolicited media and platforms, which lead them to have lewd perceptions that can result into arguments or even fights. These important issues need to be nurtured in order to encourage acceptance and respect towards differences within people of all religion, race and sex. This can be taught from a young age so that children grow up into kind and understanding human beings. Hence, AFI understands that education-conscious customers need something interesting to learn about these issues through a medium that is easy to understand. These issues can be introduced and made simple in child-friendly language through analogies or metaphors that are inclusive of fascinating and colourful illustrations.

The products that AFI plans to sell are related to the introduction of these important issues through food culture in the form of simple illustrated children’s books, pop-up books, paintings and prints because everyone nowadays, have limited time in this technology induced world. Therefore, something simple and easy to read and understand is favourable and interesting now among most educationconscious people. This is because the aim of AFI is to introduce unity through acceptance, respect and appreciation of differences among human beings through the love of food in art. Furthermore, AFI is the only one of its kind in Malaysia to use food as the main characters as most children’s books in Malaysia uses either imaginative animals or humans to depict common themes such as love, friendship and family tie.

I believe food culture is the only thing on Earth that will never discriminate anyone, no matter their race, religion, gender or appearances. Educate and be educated; I want to educate people and be educated by the people on love, respect and acceptance of our differences through food culture in art. Thus, my works are usually about social issues such as family relationships. Nevertheless, as I grow older, I try to delve deeper as a response to a global environment that is culturally diverse but not often discussed within families as it is seen as a taboo, including discrimination, racism, sexism, and many more to a much broader audience. My art varies from post-impressionism to pop art. My aim is to educate families about important social issues through my writing and illustrations. This includes children’s books, paintings, as well as make prints that can be enjoyed by everyone instead of just children. Food culture in art can be used as a means to unite people and solve global environmental social issues. My art projects bring fun to the table for both children and parents alike but are also conceptual.

It aims to educate readers about important issues that are a taboo in Malaysia through food culture in order to unite people. AFI Studio is passionate about making a difference in the world by uniting people with love, acceptance and understanding. Hence, their books offer a reliable and unbiased knowledge on these heavy issues in a family-friendly manner to avoid creating lewd perceptions that can lead to pain and hurt among each other.

NEXS VENTURE Izzat Amir Bahiki Pin Maker, Video Maker, Digital Artist

My mission is to fuse fine arts together with digital arts into one platform, and I hope to create a community of artists from different backgrounds to collaborate with one another. Art shouldn’t be exclusively for art lovers only, but it should be inclusive for everyone. Since I started video making and digital drawing, I feel that it has more excitement compared to the traditional arts. If I were to continue to make artwork without the digital input, I feel it is lifeless. My desire is to create art that we can react to, touch and interact with. What is most interesting to me, is to be able to engage and witness how people react to my artwork, whether it is my videos or my souvenirs.

“Art shouldn’t be exclusively for art lovers only, but it should be inclusive for everyone. “

Merchandising is a high demand product that is needed for every event and occasion. But I found a few problems in merchandising. Conventional products are commonly used such as tshirt, mug and keychain. There is no identity and uniqueness in the products. Some production takes a long time to produce and requires to be manufactured in factory or to be ordered directly from oversea countries such as China. The solution that I discovered is to make merchandising more personalised, customised and can be produced anywhere, at home, studio or even at the shop. Using my crafting skills and sourced materials, I am able to produce plastic lapel pin that costs cheaper than enamel pins. To manufacture at a more efficient rate, I want to create a fabrication workspace for me to produce custom merchandise using various tools such as a 3D printer, laser cutter, moulding machine and others. This will also extend my merchandising business into a community maker-space for people to create their own products. I will provide fabrication machines through rental services, fabrication workshops and ready made products available for sale.

My target market includes all kinds of customer who is in need and wants to use this service or buy the products. Such customers are like the corporate companies, event organisers, entertainment production teams, merchandise shops, startups,

student associations, creative innovators and designers who make their own things. For me to start this business, I will need RM 13 500 for the machines and materials. With target sales of RM 3 000 per month, I can get RM 72 000 in 2 years with a return of investment of 200%.

Like an orchestral symphony, our senses are all engaged when taking part in a handson activity. I believe the human interaction – whether through activities, workshops, or tours – is an avenue that allows people to widen their perspective and challenge ideas. It gives me joy to see people interact with each other and make something together. We are all social creatures. People co-exist in communities and are always surrounded by art. Thus, I strive to highlight the art all around us to make people more aware of each other and to create meaningful moments out of our co-existence.

The eyes observe; the nose smells; the ears listen; the hands mould and the mind will find a connection to make it all a meaningful experience. Huda aims to travel far and wide in pursuit to provide better arts education to students.

Growing up in a village since I was a kid, surrounded by beautiful nature and having a mum that loves gardening really inspired me. It helped to awaken the artistic side within me. This informs most of my art as they revolve around florals and a more naturalistic theme. Recently, I have also developed an interest in drawing architectural landscapes. Being a self-taught artist is definitely not an easy path, however I don’t want to limit my potential as a creative person. I am constantly trying to build courage to create more art pieces that would enable me to be a better explorer in this world. Every piece that has been created is a reflection of my thoughts. Hence, I can always see myself in each drawing and that is how I learn throughout this wonderful journey.

As a teenager, I have always enjoyed doodling on my own school shoes that has now become the cornerstone of my creative enterprise. I love being the odd-oneout, particularly in a restrictive environment, where resources are scarce. It brings out the best in me, where creativity is concerned. I hate being bound by restrictive rules. I love challenging them following my own gut feelings instead, adopting a different perspective. Colors, meticulous and precise fine lines are important in my creative work. However, the challenge is fitting a big picture in a confined space, for example, the small canvas on a pair of shoes.

“Perhaps my eternal quest in life is to create a sense of compassion by invoking the same feeling in others, maybe then we can speak the language of art.

When crafting my work, I create one-ofa-kind pieces. I seek to humanize the art of communication, incorporating details of every request, aware that even the tiniest dot could make someone eternally grateful. As a self-taught artist, I am told that my artwork sparks joy in people. This has become the raison d’être of my very existence and my art on shoes. Perhaps my eternal quest in life is to create a sense of compassion by invoking the same feeling in others, maybe then we can speak the language of art.

THE SECOND LIFE SHOP by MTMT Designs With a growing concern of indisposable waste in our surroundings, instead of inventing another new product as a business to ease the life of consumers, how about working with what we have on hand? Ever attempted circular fashion with footwear? There are 20 billion pairs of shoes being manufactured annually. With a global population of 7.7 billion people in 2019 alone, don’t you think there are just too many shoes in the market? At the Second Life Shop, our goal is to make use of second-hand footwear by repainting and repairing unwanted but still in good condition shoes to give them a second take in life. By educating the new age consumers with this concept, not only can we promote art to the younger generations, but we could also work hand-in-hand to reduce landfill waste and make the world a better place.

I’m obsessed with multiple flat-coloured shapes that forms an endless possibilities of visual imageries. Growing up in a multi-cultured environment, I’m exposed to the beauty of integrations. I’m amazed at how different we are and yet at the same time, how similar in roots. With a few tools and elements comes an infinite possibilities of cultures and crafts. A dot, a line, a shape, a motif. These simple rules initiates a wide range of aesthetics each unique to its own, and yet the beauty that comes out of it is universal. I’m also interested in the imaginative realm of cultures and lore. Living in a factual world, stories and myths that were a part of cultures often can hardly find a place to belong. Legends that were slowly forgotten have a fascinating appeal that I wish to explore in my work. By integrating traces of cultural myths into my work, I often felt like I’m providing these stories a home, an imaginative realm that continue to live on and fascinates, sparked by surreal tales of the old.
