HELLO CUPCAKE DON’T FANCY THE TRADITIONAL TIERED FRUITCAKE FOR YOUR WEDDING? WHY NOT TRY YOUR LOCAL CUPCAKERY? THEY’RE IDEAL FOR TABLE DÉCOR, A CAKE DISPLAY OR DESSERT BARS... CUPCAKES are big business. We’ve all enjoyed one of these delicious little treats in a café, washed down with a cappuccino. But cupcakes have been making their presence felt much further afield than the odd coffee shop. Dedicated cupcakeries are springing up in towns and cities all over the place, experimenting with flavours and designs that make the mind boggle. No surprise then that lots of couples planning their big day have begun choosing a cupcake-themed wedding cake instead of a conventional tiered design. There’s virtually no restriction on the designs and colours that are available to help your wedding cupcakes make a unique statement on the top table. The only limit is your imagination!
The number of individual cakes you need will obviously be dependent on the number of wedding guests you’re inviting. The tower is often topped off with a larger individual cake on the summit which can then be used for the traditional cake cutting by the bride and groom. Speak to a local cake maker to see what he or she can offer you in cupcake design. Icing can be co-ordinated to the overall colour scheme of your wedding and some cake makers can incorporate names and initials of the bride and bridegroom in the decoration. Iced hearts, butterflies, ribbons, petals, silver edible balls or roses are popular choices for decorations and the cases can also be matching. A cupcake wedding cake is sure to be a real talking point among your guests.
How it works
What does a cupcake wedding cake say about you?
A cupcake wedding cake is normally constructed in the form of a tower on a special cake stand.
Well, the first statement you’re making is that you’re a young fun loving couple who are moving away from tradition and opting for
something a little different on their wedding day.
so there are less ingredients than a traditional fruitcake recipe.
Rather than go with the traditional three-tier wedding cakes with roses round the side, you’ve chosen something young, modern and funky to be the centrepiece for your big day.
Speak to your cake maker and discuss your budget to see what they can offer within your price range.
Is a cake like this more expensive? As with everything in your wedding plan, the costs can vary enormously. Although these cakes can be fiddly to make with individual decoration, they are made of sponge cake
These pint-sized confections are generally much simpler to make so should make your centrepiece cake more affordable.

Bubble trouble WANT SOMETHING SPECIAL TO TOAST YOUR BIG DAY? YOU DON’T HAVE TO BLOW THE BUDGET ON REAL CHAMPAGNE WRITES SUSAN HAMPSHIRE A GOOD wedding needs a great toast to the future - and usually the chosen tipple is champagne. However umpteen bottles of authentic French fizz for your numerous guests can be very costly. But there are alternatives; good ones, too. So it’s worth taste-testing some of those bubbly drinks that are just as pleasant on the palate yet could cut your overall bill. Many couples have to work to a tight wedding budget and this is one way to reduce your reception costs significantly. If you insist on serving champagne, then you could mix it with orange juice to make Buck’s Fizz which will make it go a little further. This is often served to guests as they arrive at a wedding reception. To calculate how much champagne, you might need, a bottle normally serves six glasses. In these austere times, Cava and Prosecco have become a popular alternative to the expensive stuff and they always add a bit of fizz and sparkle to any occasion. Some people actually prefer these to the real thing! Pick the right one and you can use these sparkling wines either to welcome your guests
with a drinks reception or for the toasts during the speeches. The best thing to do is give them a try when you first start to plan your wedding. You could even ask a few friends or family members around to join you in a tasting session and make a night of it.
So what exactly is Cava? Cava is a Spanish wine produced in Catalonia and available in both white and rosé varieties. Locally in the Catalonia region, it is often referred to as Spanish champagne but defined by law as a quality sparkling wine. First produced in the 1850s, it is often the drink of choice at Spanish celebrations like weddings and is available in various degrees of dryness.
What is Prosecco? This is an Italian sparkling white wine which originates from the village of Prosecco near Trieste where it is thought the grape originated. With its fresh, crisp, aromatic flavours, this is a light tipple which is often used in Italy as a less-expensive substitute for champagne.
It’s hugely popular too - around 150 million bottles of Italian Prosecco are produced every year.
The real deal If you still want the authentic taste of champagne for your nuptials, then you need to remember that proper champagne is produced from grapes grown in the Champagne region of France. This is a drink which is always associated with luxury and festivities although it is not to everyone’s taste - some varieties can be quite dry. Wines from this region were cultivated as long ago as Medieval times but it was the 19th Century which saw an explosion in champagne production. Whichever variety you go for, remember that shopping around, especially over the internet, can save you a small fortune. Most of the big wine merchants have an online store, and of course there’s always a bargain to be had at the supermarkets. Do a bit of research yourself - there’s lots of buying advice and information on sites like www.champagne-civc.co.uk - but above all, make sure you taste before you buy. Not all sparkling wines are made equal!
The Old Golf House is the ideal location YOUR wedding day is one of the most important days of your life and at the Old Golf House Hotel te team pride themselves on ensuring that the reception will be one you will remember forever.

DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR SAVE A FORTUNE BY CREATING YOUR OWN UNIQUE WEDDING FAVOURS WEDDING favours have become the staple diet of all good wedding planners.
a wedding around Easter time, why not bag up some multi-coloured mini eggs to create a seasonal theme?
They’re often taken for granted as one of the features of your special day but they’re also a bigger cost than they need to be.
Doing it yourself always brings down the price of the big day and it’s not all that time consuming to fill your own sweet or chocolate containers. You could even get your bridesmaids round and have a girlie night with a bottle of wine to get your favours done in bulk!
However, this is an area where you can economise a little by making them yourself. Probably the most popular style is a chocolate or another sweet treat, presented in a pretty gift box to all your guests. However you don’t have to give chocolates - why not think about different confections such as colourful jelly beans or old fashioned traditional sweets like pear drops, rhubarb and custard, humbugs or a even a mixture. It’s easy to source pretty containers such as colourful boxes or gift bags and ribbon to tie in with the overall wedding colour theme. Pretty bags full of sweets, all tied up with colourful trimmings, are a lovely addition to any table.
Images: www.theweddingofmydreams.co.uk
Another option is to bag up some pink and white marshmallows which will add a subtle hint of colour to every table. Or if you’ve got
A great venue with new wedding offers GREAT offers are now available from one of the area’s leading wedding venues 315 Bar & Restaurant in Lepton.
Other ideas for DIY favours include little individual jars of jam for all the guests. This is a gift your guests can enjoy several times in the coming weeks and you can decorate them with hand written labels, either with the name of the bride and groom, the date of the wedding day or with a catchy slogan centred on the big day. Search on the internet for small individual jam jars and old fashioned preserve labels. Another suggestion is to buy some candles in your wedding colour theme and place these on the table, wrapped together with ribbon or coloured string and a fancy label. Again this gives your guests a lovely souvenir of your big day.
If you’re organising a summer wedding - and are hoping for a heatwave - then why not place a small coloured fan in each place setting to help your guests keep their cool during the reception. Slightly more costly is to give your guests coloured macaroons. These small cakes are really on trend at the moment and are served at the all best afternoon teas! Pick a colour to tie in with your wedding theme and either pop them in a clear bag tied with a coloured ribbon or find a pretty box. Another idea is to buy miniature spirits for favours - either whisky, brandy, port or something like a cream liqueur or an Italian Limoncello. Tie a colourful ribbon round the neck of the small bottle and hey presto, it looks great. If your guests are an emotional crowd, then think about buying some vintage handkerchiefs for the table - just in case they need to wipe away a tear! Some really pretty designs are available, both via the internet and in local shops.

Choosing the perfect veil A WEDDING veil can transform the simplest dress into a stunning bridal outfit.
7. Remember, the wedding veil is part of the bridal outfit, not something that is ‘plonked’ on your head as an afterthought.
Ann Guise designs, creates and hand makes exclusive silk wedding veils for brides all over the world.
8. If practical, take your veil with you when you have your hair trial. Your hairdresser can help you decide where to place your veil and what size comb is best to secure it.
Here are her top tips for choosing the perfect wedding veil: 1. You need to consider the veil’s colour, style, length, number of tiers and the material it’s made from. 2. Try different styles and lengths of wedding veil to find the one that best complements your outfit.
9. If you are nervous of pressing your veil, ask the store where you bought it if they will steam it a couple of days before the wedding. You can transport it home covered in a pillow case or duvet cover depending on its length. 10. Don’t wear something because you think you should, wear what YOU want.
3. Don’t have a heavily patterned wedding veil with a very ornate dress as one will ‘fight’ with the other.
11. Don’t make a decision about whether to wear a wedding veil or not until you have tried some on with your dress. A long veil can create a wonderful ‘aura’ around you.
4. Don’t have a wedding veil that cuts across detail at the back of the dress. Let the wedding veil finish below the decoration. Silk tulle is sheer enough to allow decoration to show through.
12. Don’t forget you can have a veil made-tomeasure just as you can a dress. You can have the exact length and decoration that YOU want.
5. If you are petite, don’t have a veil that swamps you such as a high bouffant veil. It will only make you look smaller. 6. Think of adding colour, eg embroidery, to the veil to link in with your bridesmaids and/or bouquet.
13. Your guests should say “You look stunning” not “Your outfit looks stunning”. 14. You only wear a wedding veil once, so make the most of it and enjoy it !

MEN OF THE CLOTH DON’T OVERLOOK THE CHAPS WHEN IT COMES TO PICKING OUTFITS FOR YOUR SPECIAL DAY TRADITIONALLY, the wedding day was all about the bride and her dress. Although the bridegroom and his party always looked smart and well booted, their outfits used to blend into the background. These days, however, things are different and often as much attention is paid to the groom’s outfit as to the bride’s. It’s now essential that the bridegroom, his best
man, groomsmen and ushers are extremely well turned out and in keeping with the overall colour theme for the day. There’s also much more choice with colourful waistcoats, cravats, ties etc to ensure he is immaculate and without a hair out of place. Wedding `collections’ are big business with specialists offering every colour of waistcoat and tie imaginable from gold to lilac, pink to purple and much more in between. Cravats, too, are very popular and can be ordered at the same time as a waistcoat. Whatever your wedding colour theme, you can rest assured that the bridegroom and his party can be matched to perfection. Don’t go overboard but perhaps look to alternative colours under the formal jacket. Sky blues, lilacs, oranges and lemons will give a lighter brighter look to the traditional garb, give a degree of originality, but retain the smartness that has underlined the groom’s look throughout marital tradition. Some bridegrooms still opt for a very traditional look while others go the whole hog and choose tails, top hat or even a kilt if they have Celtic roots. Most men’s outfitters can cater for all tastes and colours and will have suits to hire as well as to buy. When it comes to choosing an outfit, the
bridegroom should always be himself and not wear anything too outlandish. He needs to ensure his personality shines through on the day and he also needs to feel comfortable with his choice. It’s always a good idea to tie your wedding’s theme into the time of year you are getting married. If you’ve opted for a spring or summer wedding, then light, bright hues are fine and add to the feel of the season. However an autumn or winter wedding lends itself to slightly darker or richer tones to tie in with the shades of autumn or the crisp feel of a winter wedding day. Good colours for autumn weddings are bronzes, golds, terracotta or warm chocolate shades and for winter, great shades include rich reds, greens, deep purples etc. You’ll find a lot of information online about around on colour choices but also be guided by the season.

A BLANK CANVAS
PLAN THE WEDDING OF YOUR DREAMS IN A MARQUEE THAT YOUR GUESTS WILL BE TALKING ABOUT FOR YEARS WRITES SUSAN HAMPSHIRE If not, never fear – many hotels now offer marquee areas and if they don’t have their own, they’ll point you in the right direction of a supplier. Remember, you don’t have to have an enormous outdoor space as marquees can be quite flexible and erected to suit the size of venue – almost any shape is possible.
We’ve all seen those spectacular weddings in Hollywood movies where a sun-drenched, milky white tent plays host to a plethora of well-heeled and super-sophisticated wedding guests. The sound of Champagne flutes clinking and quiet laughter rolling around a purpose-built and uniquely decorated backdrop makes for a one-of-a-kind celebration. Think it’s a little out of your price range? Think again. If you have the space, hiring a marquee is a competitively priced option for your wedding reception instead of a more traditional bricks and mortar venue. If you don’t have the space at your place, perhaps your parents or future in-laws might.
“ Of course, a marquee is a blank canvas for you to decorate as you wish
Of course, a marquee is a blank canvas for you to decorate as you wish. Couples can customise their marquee to a certain theme - traditional, romantic, Eastern style or vintage. There are no rules except the ones you make up yourselves. While a classic white marquee can be very popular, there are endless possibilities for your décor – and at any budget. Why not deck out your marquee in a vintage style with coloured bunting and table decorations? Alternatively go for an Eastern

theme and deck with Chinese themed lighting and colourful decor. A marquee is usually lined with pleated swathes of ivory fabric but some companies offer tinted panels to tie in with your overall colour theme. Some even have patterned linings and some larger marquees come complete with windows for maximum light. Whatever your decision, make sure your marquee can easily transform from the daytime reception to the evening `do’. Check with your marquee specialist how many people it can accommodate, both for a formal daytime meal and also for the evening buffet and disco. Depending on the time of year, you might want to consider heating, even if it’s only required in the evening. The last thing you want is for your guests to be cold – so add this to your plans. Likewise if you’re getting married in summer, fans might be required if you’re particularly lucky with the weather. So it might be worth having an additional outdoor seating area so your guests can enjoy the weather. However you choose to do it, a marquee can be a real showstopper with your guests and give a truly unique feel to your special day.
