Research suggests that children’s money habits start early – as young as seven – with parents being a strong influence, and yet nearly half of parents don’t regularly talk to their children at all about finances, according to a new survey from the Govern-

It also appears there’s something to be said for giving your child pocket money regularly, rather than £10 one week and nothing the next. A lack of consistency over pocket money could

Help your children to develop positive, beneficial financial habits. ■■ Have a go. You may not be a maths whizz yourself, but money is a very handson, practical subject. Encourage your child to handle money, such as when you give them pocket money. Younger children can also benefit from “playing shop”. ■■ It’s fine to make a few mistakes. It is far better to allow children to make mistakes with small amounts of cash now than have them facing bigger money problems when they are older.

Does your house earn more than you? Homes have “earned” more money than their owners in almost one fifth of areas across the UK as the housing market recovery has taken off, research has found. Over the last two years, average house prices have increased by more than the amounts that employees have typically earned after tax in 73 out of 384 local authority districts across the UK, according to the findings from Halifax. The biggest difference was found in Hammersmith and Fulham, where house price increases have outstripped typical takehome earnings over the last two years by more than £143,000. Meanwhile, house sellers’ average asking prices are just £30 below their alltime high levels as a lack of choice for buyers adds to the upward pressure on values, Rightmove has reported. The average new seller asking price across England and Wales was £281,752 in March.

Financial assistance A FINANCIAL health minister should be appointed to help ensure that everyone has access to basic facilities such as banking, affordable credit and is encouraged to save, a report argues. The Financial Inclusion Commission (FIC) said that every adult in the UK should be connected to the “financial mains” – yet many are still excluded from core financial services, are unable to manage their budgets and would be unable to absorb money shocks. It said that nearly two million adults do not have a bank account, 13m do not have enough savings to tide them over a fall in income and 8.8m are overindebted. ■■ The housing market recovery pushed stamp duty revenues to a record high of £8 billion in 2014/15, according to estimates. Halifax, which made the findings, said the figure, which covers the whole of the UK, would “comfortably exceed” the previous high in stamp duty takings of £6.68 billion at the peak of the housing market boom in 2007/08.
