RAISING THE ROOF

FOUR CONVERTIBLES PERFECT FOR WHATEVER BRITISH SUMMERTIME THROWS AT US

W

HEN passed by a slinky top-down convertible on a sticky summer’s day, do you wonder, as I do, “is it worth it?” Of course, it’s nice when it’s sunny, but, given that we live in a corner of England known for its grey skies and predictable precipitation, I think if I’d shelled out more than was necessary on a retractable roof for my car, that roof would prove a daily source of irritation. I’d likely find myself with it down during a cloudburst, just to be sure I got my money’s worth. But then again, there are some days on which it would be nice to feel the wind in whatever hair you have left.

Now, in most things, I think, the middle way of compromises is to be avoided. All too often you end up with the worst of both worlds rather than the best. This is not the case with Citroen’s DS3 Cabrio. It’s not a convertible, and it’s not a hard top. It’s a bit of both and perfect if you like to stay dry, but want to feel the wind through your hair when the storm gods allow. But this is no compromise car. It’s a cool-looking motor with a decent punch that has something genuinely different about it – so many modern cars just lack the individual character that a car like the Cabrio has. It’s fun to drive, but comfortable at the same time. And when it’s open to the

elements you can get a taste of what it might be like to be roaring round in a top-down sports car. One button-push later and you’re back to a sensible hatchback. It’s a nice trick. And while I say sensible, that isn’t to say the car has no power. Our test car, the Dsport THP155 6-speed manual, certainly went when pressed and turned when asked. So it’s a nice drive, too, if a little loud in the cabin - a bit of road noise is the price you pay for the cloth roof. At £22,340 for this top-of-therange model, it isn’t exactly the cheap option. But the basic model can be had for £19,845 – we had leather seats, Bluetooth in the stereo and metallic paint among other nice extras. What is practical is the fuel efficiency, though, which touches 69mpg on the motorway, and 48mpg combined. The entry DSign VTi 82 model, with its three cylinder, 82hp petrol engine, can manage almost 60mpg combined.

T

HE iconic Mazda MX-5 has been around in one guise or another since the late

1980s. The fact that it has continued to be such a success – voted best roadster for six years in a row by Auto Express – is testament to the brilliance of the original design. Sadly for us that success was yet another nail in the coffin of the British sports car industry – but you can detect traces of its influence when driving this pretty little sports car. The great driving position, excellent gearbox and fun handling all take me back to younger days tootling around in MGBs and Midgets –albeit more slowly and a lot less reliably. And we most certainly did not have heated leather seats, a big screen sat-nav, air conditioning and cruise control as fitted to our ‘Sport Tech Nav’ version – the very latest incarnation of the MX-5 legend. Another thing which has moved on over the years is soft-top technology, with the Sport Tech’s canvas lid keeping wind and road noise down to near saloon car levels. However, it is still a manual operation to get the roof down – but you can go for the Roadster Coupe with its power hardtop if that’s an issue.

The 2.0-litre engine is pokey and cruses comfortably at beyond motorway limits, helped by that slick 6-speed manual box. Mazda has revised the line-up by introducing upgraded models with a fresh face, new pedestrianfriendly bonnet, satellite navigation system, side airbags, climate control air-conditioning and an even more rewarding driving experience. The latest seven-strong range introduced the Sport Tech Nav models, with integrated satellite navigation as standard – a Mazda first on the MX-5 range. Keeping ahead of tougher EU regulations, the MX-5 is the first Mazda to be equipped with the company’s newly developed active bonnet system. In a collision with a pedestrian the trailing edge of the bonnet instantly ‘pops-up’ to increase the crumple zone between the bonnet and engine, reducing the severity of pedestrian injuries. There’s a choice of three powertrains – the 126ps 1.8i MZR with a five-speed gearbox and the 160ps 2.0i MZR with a smoothshifting six-speed manual transmission or ‘PowerShift‘ six-speed sequential paddle-shift transmission that allows manual control or a fully automatic mode.

VAUXHALL CASCADA

H

AVING fun in a roofless motor isn’t restricted to childless couples in twoseaters nor supercar enthusiasts with unlimited budgets. It might not win any drag races but Vauxhall’s Cascada is a smooth and practical way of getting fresh air flowing past your ears when the weather permits. With its fabric roof up, the fourseater is remarkably quiet and comfortable and much like any other family saloon, with plenty

of boot space and the kind of ride you’d more associate with a cruise down to Tesco than a blast round a racetrack. Roof on, it’s not exactly ugly, but it’s not shown in its best light either. However, drop the top at the flick of a switch and the Cascada’s shape transforms into a sleek coupe that I wouldn’t have been surprised to see with a German badge on its rear end. The electrically operated roof can be raised in 19 seconds or lowered

in 17 seconds and all this can be done at speeds of up to 30mph. Now this feature has two useful applications. Firstly, who knows when the next bit of sunshine will come along – at Brits we need to be ready to soak up its rays in amatter of seconds, whether we’re on the drive or on a dual carriageway. Secondly, none of us knows exactly how long that bit of sunshine will last, and since no-one wants a soaking, why bother pulling over to slap the lid back on? Vauxhall say they’ve tested the roof 15,000 times, which equates to around 10 years’ use, so you shouldn’t see any of those problems of the roof being stuck mid-cycle that the early Peugeot 206 owners endured! Granted, with the roof down, a good chunk of the boot space is lost to the folding ragtop mehcanism but providing you’ve allowed for this when loading your shopping in, you won’t end up with too many

JAGUAR F TYPE V6

J

UST once in a very long while the jigsaw pieces of life fall together in the right order and you end up having a really great day. That was the thought running through my mind as I gunned the black F-Type S convertible with its roof down in a by-pass tunnel and the ‘active sports exhaust’ gave vent to a throaty roar from that V6 supercharged engine releasing THE most glorious noise. Behind me white van man gave the thumbs up as he too enjoyed a mechanical symphony – the noise from the big cat’s 375bhp

power-plant reverberating from the tunnel walls… bliss. With a top speed of 171 and 0-60 time at 4.8 seconds it would be easy to rack-up penalty points on a sunny day with the superb sound system blasting away. Despite what some of my colleagues may think, I was not even in short trousers when the E-Type hit our roads in 1961, so have no memories of the sensation it caused. The first 3.8-litre, six-cylinder E-Types had 265bhp, a top speed of 150mph and did 0-60 in around seven seconds. The F-Type has

FROM £18,495

snapped sticks of celery. The two-litre diesel I drove was frugal if driven carefully but powerful enough to be smooth and comfy on longer runs with plenty of poke for overtaking. It was a little noisy at idle but with prices starting at around £24k, you can’t have everything. For me, the Cascada represented

the best of both worlds. It affords the comfort and practicality of a decent-sized, quality family car. It does everything you’d want it to in comfort and style and when you think you’d have to spend another £10,000 on the equivalent BMW, it does make you think...

Mark Burrow

FROM £60,000

around 100 more horses, is a few seconds quicker and has 21 more miles per hour at the top end – but is it as beautiful as the E-Type? Very nearly. But while the E-Type still edges it in the looks department the F-Type has much better handling, with its adjustable sports suspension and adaptive dynamics, greater comfort and equipment and that glorious exhaust note – it would definitely win the growling contest. Another thing you

definitely could not do in the E-Type was put the roof up or down on the move but the 2014 fast cat can do so at low speed so there is no need to get a summer shower soaking while stuck in moving traffic. And I would suggest the F-Type is something of a bargain (prices start from just over £60,000 for the V6 coupe) if you consider it attracts as much attention and

is as great to drive as a Ferrari or Lamborghini, which cost more than twice as much. There are lots of other great features on the F-Type – like the superb 8-speed auto sports gearbox and the air-con unit which ascents from the top of the dash but, sadly, not enough space here to list them all. Suffice it to say that this was definitely one car I really did not want to hand back.

MEET THE CAR THAT

RUNS YOUR LIFE JAGUAR LAND ROVER HAS DESIGNED A SELFLEARNING CAR WHICH USES SMART ASSISTANT TECHNOLOGY TO MEMORISE AND ORGANISE YOUR DAILY ROUTINE

I

T IS a car that’s not only your personal assistant and life coach, but can also second guess your every move. Sounds far-fetched but this mobile wonder is on its way thanks to technology being perfected by Jaguar Land Rover for its future models. The self-learning car will, says JLR, offer a completely personalised driving experience and help prevent accidents by reducing driver distraction. It instantly recognises the driver and prepares seat settings, mirror position and the steering wheel before that person has even opened the car door, just by recognising the driver’s smartphone. The cabin will also be pre-set to the desired temperature – and be intelligent enough to make alterations if it is snowing or raining. The intelligent car will have its own on-board Smart Assistant to carry out various functions to allow the driver to concentrate on driving. And the system intends to minimise driver distraction to reduce the potential for accidents – with an eventual goal of zero accidents. It works thanks to a new set-up

that recognises who is in the car and learns their preferences and driving style. The software then applies it using a range of variables including calendar, the time of day, traffic conditions and the weather to predict driver behaviour and take over many of the daily driving chores. Through the Smart Assistant, the car will also review your schedule and pre-set the sat-nav depending on traffic conditions to avoid congestion and will predict your next destination based on the schedule. Should you be taking the kids to school, the car will recognise every passenger and offer each their own entertainment options. Plus, if you usually make a phone

call at a certain time or on a particular journey, the car will predict it and offer to make the call. Should you be late for an appointment, the car will offer to email or call ahead. Looking to safety, the self-learning car will also be able to learn an individual’s driving style in a range of traffic conditions and on different types of road. When the driver activates Auto Adaptive Cruise Control the technology will be able to apply these learned distance settings and acceleration profiles to automated cruise control. It will also let you know if there’s enough fuel before long journeys, the day before you travel, and suggest fuel stations which have the driver’s preferred brand and location. Jaguar Land Rover’s director of research and technology, Dr Wolfgang Epple, said: “The aim of our self-learning technology is to minimise driver distraction, which will help reduce the risk of accidents. “Up until now most self-learning car research has only focused on traffic or navigation prediction. We want to take this a step further and our new learning algorithm means information learnt about you will deliver a completely personalised driving experience and enhance driving pleasure.”

CREWE WINS NEW UNIVERSITY TECHNICAL COLLEGE SUPPORTED BY BENTLEY MOTORS AND A RANGE OF INDUSTRY AND ACADEMIC PARTNERS, THE NEW VENTURE WILL OFFER WORK AND TRAINING FOR 14 TO 19 YEARS OLDS CREWE will be home to a new University Technical College. UTC Crewe, due to open in September 2016, is a major new investment in the educational offering in Crewe. This new college will offer an exciting and inspiring education for young people seeking a pathway to employment and further education. University Technical Colleges offer courses for 14 to 19 year olds which are designed with input from local employers and a partner university. UTCs already operate in other parts of the country but this is the first of its kind in Crewe. Commenting on the successful UTC Crewe bid, Bentley’s member of the board for Human Resources, Dr Ariane Reinhart, said: “UTC Crewe is fantastic news for Crewe, local students and for Bentley. It will enhance the local community, boosting skills, education and employability, for the benefit of individuals and many organisations. It is driven by a collaboration between Bentley Motors, Manchester Metropolitan University, Siemens, Bosch, OSL Rail, Jacobs Engineering, Chevron Racing, Optical 3D, South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce and Cheshire East Council. The aim is to feed the gap local businesses have of young people with automotive, engineering, rail and design

skills in these growing industries. As with all colleges, the Principal and teaching staff are pivotal to success. At UTC Crewe, they will be able to draw on expertise from a range of partners to ensure the academic and practical learning activities are relevant for the changing world of work leading to clear student pathways into academia or employment, or both. Bentley has been closely involved with the UTC project and will continue to work with the college and its partners to help design a curriculum that reflects the needs of industry and provides an exciting and inspiring learning environment. The collaboration with UTC Crewe forms the next step in Bentley’s focus on talent development and continuous improvement. Bentley already offers trainee programmes, including apprenticeships and graduate schemes, around 150 work experience placements each year and has an established school liaison programme, providing workshops in local schools. UTC Crewe will build on these existing development activities.

COOL BRITANNIA

BENTLEY’S LATEST CONTINENTAL GT V8 CERTAINLY GETS YOU NOTICED... AND IN A GOOD WAY AS STEVE HOWARTH DISCOVERED...

A

S YOU may have guessed already from the picture, this test car is a little more upmarket than most of the motors in Drive magazine. Yes – they really did let me loose in a £148,000 Bentley... and what an experience it turned out to be. After the car was delivered on a custom-built, covered transporter, I very gingerly took to the roads and my first stop was a night-time errand in one of the less upmarket areas of Bolton. Getting out of the car I was hailed by an obviously somewhat financiallychallenged chap and thought ‘here we go’. He said: “Is it a GT... a V8?” and after I confirmed his assessment I was pleasantly bemused to get the response ‘nice one’ and a big thumbs-up before he ambled on. Far from the reaction I had feared, this was typical of the comments the car provoked. Bentley is still as British as

Buckingham Palace and the Beatles and seems to inspire pride more than envy. I know the company is now owned by VW and a lot of the parts are VW or Audi (including that superb, twin-turbo 500bhp V8 engine) but it’s still a Bentley and built in Britain. Let’s face it, Bentleys are cool. In the original Ian Fleming books James Bond did not drive an Aston Martin, he drove a Bentley as did the super-cool John Steed in the original TV Avengers. And there are more Bentleys on our roads than you may think. On my way into work yesterday I saw four on the 14-mile journey. The factory in Crewe last year produced over 10,000 cars, the majority the Continental model. Before the ‘baby’ Bentley was introduced in 2003 the factory was making more like 1,000 cars a year – so it is easy to see what impact the Continental has had both with the public and for the car maker. And the GT is also doing the business for

“THERE IS A ‘SPORT’OPTION ON THE FANTASTIC 8-SPEED AUTO BOX (WHICH CHANGES GEAR LITERALLY IN MILLISECONDS)...”

GB-plc with a large percentage of those 10,000 cars a year going abroad. So what is the Continental GT V8 like? Well here I need to reach for the superlatives box. As you would expect it is supremely comfortable, with adjustable air suspension, sumptuously appointed and equipped, handling is great thanks partly to its four wheel drive system and the GT is blisteringly fast (nought to 62 in 4.8 seconds and a 188mph top speed, despite weighing in at around 2.3 tons). There is a ‘sport’ option on the fantastic eight-speed auto box (which changes gear literally in milliseconds)... but it is about as necessary as overdrive on the starship Enterprise. The current version is the result of an extensive revision which Bentley says was so comprehensive they regard post 2011 cars as a new model. Alloy panels were part of the overhaul, which lightened the car considerably and, together with the introduction

of that V8 engine, brought fuel consumption figures of over 26mpg overall and almost 37 on a run. That’s a big improvement over the previous (and still available) 6.0-litre, W12 engine which does more than 10mpg less. With its 20-gallon tank those mpg figures give the V8 a range of well over 500 miles. I managed just over 24mpg overall during my week with the Bentley, although I admit to being seduced into opening-up the 500bhp on tap a few times when joining motorways. The standard car comes, as you would expect at £130,000, with a comprehensive list of equipment including gorgeous 20” Bentley alloy wheels, an electronic boot spoiler which raises automatically at 70mph and electric boot opening and closing. Our test car had a list of optional extras which added £18,470

and included special order ‘Moonbeam’ silver paintwork, ‘contrast’ stitching on the sumptuous leather interior and – if it was my money sitting on the driveway – an absolute must... Bentley’s GPStracker system which can show where the car is anywhere in the world should it fall into the wrong hands. So the GT V8 is everything you would expect and more… a true Grand Tourer but, I hear you say, what about that price? Well yes, it is a lot of money and, sadly, beyond the reach of many of us. But for those lucky enough to be able to afford a true supercar I would suggest the Bentley’s understated style and British cool make it a much classier and more practical option than a Ferrari or Lambo – and cheaper too.

Rapide weight loss Featherlight Renault Clio is a real road-burner – despite only having a 1,197cc petrol engine, Steve HowaRtH Found out...

t

HEY must have been putting something in the tea down at the Renault design office. In recent months a string of greatlooking cars have come out of the French manufacturer’s plants like the Captur, Megan Coupe and latest Clio range. Our test car this week is the great looking Clio GT-Line 120EDC – and it’s not a case of all show and no go either... because they must be on the good stuff in the engine department too as, despite only having a 1,197cc petrol motor, the sporty Clio puts out 120bhp – which gives a nought to 62 time of 9.9 seconds and top speed of 121mph. This is achieved from such a diminutive power plant – using Renault’s F1 expertise – through a turbo and sequential multipoint fuel injection – plus the fact that the car is very light, only weighing in at 1,186kg. Getting behind the wheel you immediately feel ‘part of the

machine’ with a superb driving position, mainly thanks to great sports seats which wrap around you and are quite deep – on our test car they were also clad in optional ‘dark carbon’ leather with GT logos on the headrests. Push the start button (which is a little hidden away at the bottom of the centre console) and that mighty mini-motor bursts into life… very quietly. In fact the car is so quiet that when the Clio was delivered the driver accidentally left it running on our busy car park (easy to do with keyless entry) and it was only some two hours later that someone noticed... which is

surprising as the Clio is a car that gets noticed a lot thanks to that great bodywork. Alfa-style ‘hidden’ rear door handles enhance the sporty look as do the curved lower body moldings, sporty 17-inch GT anthracite alloy wheels, twin chrome exhausts and Renaultsport rear spoiler. On the road the car inspires confidence in the corners and I can imagine it would be great fun on a track day.

The engine pulls well and if you select sport mode is positively punchy – feeling more like a 1.6GTi than its true 1.1 size. Inside, as well as those great seats, there’s the Renault R-Link multimedia centre console (I am still getting used to this new trend to make consoles which look like they were stuck on after everything else was finished) which has a large touch screen sat-nav and control system that is easy to use. Other standard fittings include a ‘3D sound’ radio

system with USB, hands-free and Bluetooth. And probably because it is so sporty, the car also has one of the most comprehensive speed trap warning alert systems I have ever seen with a voice warning and loud audible buzzer, plus the touch screen turns into a giant red warning sign as you near a camera. Elsewhere on the interior you are left in no doubt this is a performance car with a chunky, leather-clad steering wheel with GT badge and Renaultsport decals on the dashboard. There are also (as it was the sixspeed auto) huge ‘flappy paddle’ gear shifters – which did seem a little over the top and were not needed anyway as the Clio did a terrific job of shifting the gears all on its own. It’s fair to say that, certainly with this car, Renault have rediscovered their Va-Va-Voom! The Clio range starts from £10,795 (on the road) for the Expression 1.2. The Clio GTLine is from £17,395 and the superquick Clio Renaultsport 200 turbo starts at £18,995 on the road.

W

HEN it comes to the world of 4x4 motoring size matters… just try turning up at an off-road event in a Suzuki Jimny! With that in mind, our test car this week ticks all the boxes because it’s one of the off-road (and on road) big boys - the Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit. We are talking near Range Rover proportions... and performance... and levels of luxury (including the biggest dashboard sat-nav/ command system touch screen I have seen) from the people who in 1941 brought the world the original mass-produced offroader, the WW2 Willys Jeep. The Jeep’s name origins are uncertain. Some claim it came from the slurring of the letters GP, the US Army abbreviation for General Purpose vehicle. Others say it was named after a character ‘Eugene the Jeep’ in the popular Popeye cartoon strip of the time. Either way, it was a massive

success with more than half-amillion of the drab, olive green vehicles built for action in all theatres of World War Two. The later CJ-3B version, little different to the wartime model, continued in production until 1968 with more than 150,000 sold. But back to the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee – which is still running roughshod over the opposition when it comes to street cred and on-road presence. At well over two tones, almost 16 feet long, over six feet wide and standing almost six feet high, it is not a vehicle you can ignore. The Summit also comes as standard with bling-tastic 20” polished aluminium wheels – which shine like chrome – rear extra dark privacy glass and big dual chrome exhaust tips. Mind you – it’s not all show and no go. The 2,987cc, 247bhp V6 diesel engine, running through a superb eight-speed auto box with overdrive, will shove this huge car from nought to 62 in just 8.2 seconds and hurtle on to a top speed of 126.

Grand Cherokee Summit Interior

And that’s not the biggest engine version – I would love to get my hands on the mildly mental 6.4 V8 HEMI SRT! Yet, despite shifting all that motoring mass at such speeds, MPG figures for the V6 diesel are reasonable with up to 43.5 on a run and 37.7 combined. Unveiled last year, the latest Grand Cherokee is packed with kit and this Summit version even more so. Standard are: Power fold mirrors, heated and cooled leather electric seats all round, panoramic power sunroof and sunshade, auto headlights, wipers, climate control and ride height, heated steering wheel, memory

front seats, hill descent control, hill start assist, adaptive cruise control, tyre pressure and blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning and avoidance, park assist with rear camera, adjustable air suspension, voice command… the list is so long there simply is not enough room here to get it all in. It all adds up to an impressive vehicle which is powerful, comfortable and refined on the road. They will mostly be seen in the fast lane of the motorway, but the few of these cars that do end up doing any serious off-road stuff will also impress thanks to systems like the variable height air

suspension and Jeep’s legendary 4x4 systems. Having tested previous Cherokee models on press events in extreme off road conditions – driving along a two-foot deep rocky river and up and down scarily steep and slippery muddy inclines – I know that the latest model, claimed to be even better in the rough stuff, will be more than up to the task. Prices start with the CRD V6 Laredo at £37,165 on the road up to the Grand Cherokee 6.4 V8 HEMI SRT at £60,695 otr. Our test car, the near range-topping Summit 3.0 CRD V6 is £49,495 otr.

FUELLING CHANGE ALL-NEW FORD ECOSPORT COMBINES SMALL CAR PRACTICALITY AND FUEL EFFICIENCY WITH SUV SPACE AND FLEXIBILITY

F

ORD’S all-new EcoSport SUV offers the optimum combination of small car agility, affordability and fuel efficiency, with the flexibility and space customers expect from a SUV – in one stylish and connected package. The stylish and rugged Ford EcoSport is the first SUV in the world to offer a 1.0-litre engine and is among the first Ford vehicles in Europe available with Ford SYNC with AppLink, enabling drivers to voice-control smartphone apps while keeping their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.

“All-new Ford EcoSport delivers a clever and connected small car for our European customers,” said Nick Fitzgerald, EcoSport chief programme engineer. “Ford’s new urban SUV is economical, flexible and stylish, and will lineup alongside the new B-MAX compact multi-activity vehicle, the best-selling Fiesta to complete Ford’s comprehensive small car line-up for the UK.” EcoSport is the first Ford global model to be developed entirely in South America. First introduced in 2003, the EcoSport created the segment in Brazil and has since sold more than 770,000 in

Ford EcoSport

the region. Ford engineers and designers from more than 16 countries worked together to develop the all-new EcoSport that is launched amid increasing demand for SUVs in Europe. Ford projects that between 2013 and 2018, sales of all SUVs in Europe will increase by 22 per cent, and sales of small SUVs – like EcoSport – will increase by 90 per cent. Ford’s first global SUV, EcoSport, is

stylish and practical – with a short bonnet, raked front pillars, and a distinctive five-piece chrome front grille with angular headlamps and signature LED light strips. The full-sized spare wheel mounted on the tailgate ensures the EcoSport’s load capacity rivals that of many medium-sized family cars with up to 375 litres available when the rear seats are in place, depending on the rake of the seats.

There are 20 smart stowage solutions, including room in the door pockets to store a large drinks bottle, a slide-out drawer under the front passenger seat, and a cooled glove box that can store up to six 350ml drink cans. Sporty and economical EcoSport is available with the turbocharged 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine – three times winner of International Engine of the Year – to deliver performance to rival a traditional 1.6-litre engine, but with better fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions. The 125PS 1.0-litre EcoBoost achieves 53.3mpg and 125g/km CO2. EcoSport also offers a 112PS 1.5-litre petrol engine that can achieve 44.8mpg and 149g/km CO2 specified with a five-speed manual gearbox or with a sixspeed automatic gearbox. A 90PS 1.5-litre diesel engine achieves 61.4mpg with 120g/km CO2 emissions. “EcoSport’s combination of exciting looks, great performance and advanced technology is made all the more impressive by the fact that it’s all comfortably powered along by a frugal 1.0-litre engine,” Fitzgerald said.

DRIVING IN EUROPE IF YOU’RE PLANNING A ROAD TRIP ON THE CONTINENT, THERE ARE A FEW THINGS THAT YOU CAN DO BEFORE YOU SET OFF TO HELP YOUR TRIP GO SMOOTHLY. HERE IS A QUICK GUIDE FROM SWINTON INSURANCE TO DRIVING IN EUROPE

ESSENTIAL DOCUMENTS ALL drivers heading to Europe need the following documents with them at all times: • Driving licence with paper counterpart, if applicable • Vehicle registration document (V5) • Motor insurance certificate • International driving permit, if necessary • Travel insurance documents. If you’re planning to travel in a car that’s borrowed, hired or leased, you will need a letter of authorisation from the registered keeper. You’ll also need to take the V5c or a VE103 certificate.

MUST-HAVES There are some items that you must have with you when you’re

driving abroad and others that are a really good idea to take with you. • A GB sticker - If you don’t have a GB Euro number plate, you’ll need to display a GB sticker on your car. • Insurance - It’s worth checking that you’re insured to drive abroad. It also might be worth paying an additional premium to ensure you’re comprehensively covered. • Breakdown cover - Often UK breakdown cover doesn’t extend to overseas trips. Check your policy and if necessary, take out standalone cover. • European Health Insurance Card - A European Health Insurance card (EHIC) entitles

you to reduced or free state healthcare when you’re travelling abroad in the EU.

the legal requirements are for the country you’re visiting to make sure you bring everything you need. Here are a few common equipment requirements in Europe: • Warning triangle • Reflective jackets • Portable breathalyser • Snow chains • Spare tyre.

• Breakdown kit - European travel kits are readily available and include a fire extinguisher, warning triangle, tool kit, torch, blanket, first-aid kit and reflective jacket. A jack and wheel removal tools could come in handy too. • Headlamp beam converter kits - You’ll need to adjust your car’s headlamps to driving on the right-hand side. With most cars you can do this easily using a headlamp beam converter kit.

JUST BEFORE YOU GO Before you leave, familiarise yourself with speed limits, documentation, alcohol limits and any other important rules. Finally…have a great trip!

ENHANCED PERFORMANCE LUXURY BRITISH MOTORING GIANT ASTON MARTIN ADDS STATEOFTHEART ENHANCEMENTS TO TWO OF ITS MOST SUCCESSFUL SPORTS MODELS FOR A MORE RESPONSIVE DRIVING EXPERIENCE

A

STON Martin has revealed details of enhancements to two of the brand’s most popular sports cars: the Vanquish ultimate GT and Rapide S fourdoor, four-seat, sports car. With the arrival of 15 Model Year (15MY) cars in markets around the world over the next few months, the luxury British brand is offering not only considerably enhanced performance and improved fuel economy and emissions, but also an even more honed and responsive driving experience. With the debut of the new Touchtronic III eight-speed automatic gearbox in both Vanquish and Rapide S, Aston Martin is improving every major area of the cars’ performance and fuel economy. The brand’s engineers have worked with technical partner, ZF, to develop the eight-speed technology and integrate it into the latest generation of the Aston

Martin VH architecture. The nought to 60 mph times for both the Vanquish and Rapide S are reduced in 15MY cars: The Vanquish drops from 4.1 seconds to just 3.6 seconds (3.8 seconds nought to 100 km/h) and the Rapide S is capable of the same sprint in only 4.2 seconds (4.4 seconds nought to 100 km/h) – also down by a half second from its previous figure of 4.7 seconds. Changes to gear and final drive ratios allow the cars to be not only quicker but also more frugal, with reduced emissions too. In both sports cars the CO2 figure drops by an average of 10 per cent – down to 298 g/km for Vanquish and 300 g/ km for Rapide S – while economy is boosted to 31 mpg, on average an 11 per cent improvement, on the EU’s extra urban cycle for both the Vanquish and the Rapide S under the same stringent test conditions. Combined with a revised final drive, the ratio

changes also mean both cars are, for the first time, now capable of top speeds of 200 mph or above. The new eight-speed Touchtronic III automatic gearbox is not only three per cent lighter than its predecessor, it is also packaged more efficiently occupying precisely the same space within the car yet adding two

further ratios over the outgoing transmission. Ian Minards, product development director at Aston Martin, explained: “We have a long and successful technical partnership with ZF and so it was a natural step for us to adapt and integrate their world class 8HP transmission in to our transaxle layout.”

“This has been a detailed piece of work involving careful consideration of many technical parameters including gear ratios, software integration and shifting strategies. This has delivered a significant step change in both vehicle performance and economy whilst preserving the unique Aston Martin V12 driving experience.”

Biker virgin

DRIVE EDITOR MARK BURROW TAKES THE FIRST STEPS TO BECOMING A BIKER, DOING HIS CBT WITH REIGNING BRITISH MOTO3 CHAMPION JOE FRANCIS

L

AST summer I went to the Isle of Man TT Races for the first time. For two weeks, the world’s finest and most fearless road racers descend on this picturesque little island along with thousands upon thousands of spectating bikers for two weeks of motorsport mayhem. I’ll never forget the first time I saw them tearing past our vantage point in Kirk Michael, where bike after bike hits the 170mph mark only a few feet away. It was while in the Isle of Man that I decided I wanted a motorbike. I’ve always been aware of bikes (my dad has always ridden) but having been lucky enough to have a driving licence and a car from the age of 17, I’ve never felt overly compelled to try it myself. Perhaps it’s because I can see the number 40 advancing stealthily over the horizon of life; maybe it’s because I feel more confident on the road after 20 years behind the wheel. But it was definitely the buzz of the TT which really set the wheels in motion and I vowed to take the first steps this year. As luck would have it, I had an email a few weeks ago from wellknown bike insurance specialist, Bennetts, with a rather special Photo: Seb Parkinson

invitation. Chester-born Joe Francis is a 16 year-old biker racer sponsored by Bennetts and currently racing in the National Superstock 600 championship - a support series to the British Superbike calendar. Now, Joe and I had one thing in common - neither of us had ever ridden a motorbike on the road before. Sure, we’ve both got some biking experience - I once rode a scooter in Portugal and Joe has been crowned GP50 British Champion, the GP70 British Champion, the Aprilia Superteen Champion and the 2013 British Moto3 Champion! But neither of us were road legal, so we headed down to Moto Technique motorcycle training centre in Manchester to take our Compulsory Basic Training (CBT). CBT costs about £100 including bike hire and there are numerous training providers in and around Greater Manchester. The certificate is valid for two years and allows you to ride up to a 125cc machine unsupervised on the road whilst displaying L -plates. Joe’s used to being on a bike - he’s been riding one since he was a nipper and he’s been racing in various forms for half his young life. Naturally, as a racer he’s

absolutely fearless - en route to the training centre he revealed he’d happily bungee jump from the new Co-Operative building in the city centre - yet when you meet him, he’s calm, softly spoken and instantly likeable. Our day started with a safety briefing and an explanation of the kind of protective gear you should be wearing as a biker. Then a fleet of 125cc bikes were loaded into the back of a van and we headed over the car park at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium. They do the first riding session here to make sure you’re safe on two wheels before they actually let you loose on the road. After a quick lesson on basic maintenance, the first thing you learn to do is actually ride a bike. Though the principle is the same as driving a car i.e. clutch in, engage gear, clutch out and accelerate, it’s a whole different kettle of fish. There’s much more to think about and it’s only when you hear the trainer telling you to lift your head up and look where you’re going that you understand that the physicalities of riding the bike need to become second nature before you can ride safely on the road. A few laps around the car park and I was soon getting into the swing

Photo: Seb Parkinson

of setting off without stalling, then moving up and down through the gears before safely coming to a stop. And thankfully, Joe was just about managing to keep up! Next up was the emergency stop. You could tell Joe was getting bored by this point because he was starting to wonder exactly what he could get his bike to do. I should point out that given his tender years, Joe wasn’t even allowed to do his CBT on a geared bike - he was consigned to a ‘twist and go’ scooter with all the power of a top-of-the-range Dyson. After trying a few wheelies and whizzing up and down the car park beeping his horn in celebration, Joe turned his attention to getting the longest possible run-up for his emergency stop practice - even resorting to wheelspins in the dirt of the flowerbeds at the far end of the car park. Once the instructors were happy that we were in control, we headed back to base to brush up on the highway code over a sandwich

before taking to the highways ourselves. Riding on the road wasn’t at all like I expected it to be. I’ve driven for two decades and I’ve had an energy-sapping push bike for years, so I was looking forward to soaring up hill and down dale without exerting any more effort than a flick of my right wrist. But no, this was no relaxing cruise. This is dangerous stuff! People treat you differently when you’re on a bike. For a start, half of the drivers don’t see you, which makes the use of lights and fluorescent clothing an absolute must if you’re going to try this. And a good proportion of the drivers that do see you, choose to pull out of side streets and needlessly overtake you regardless! You just don’t get the same respect as a car does. Bikers often get a bad press from drivers but statistics show that the majority of accidents involving bikers turn out to be the fault of a car driver. Having now been on both sides of the fence, I can

confirm that bikers are paying more attention to the road than you will ever know. They’re concentrating on physically riding their bike and being in the right gear for their situation, holding a safe position in the road whilst avoiding potholes and the like; they’re planning so much further down the road than the end of their bonnet and they’re watching every side street like a hawk, assuming that cars will pull out rather than stay put, not to mention second-guessing what the oncoming traffic is about to do. It truly is a minefield. But I liked it. And nerve-wracking though it was, it wasn’t long before I began to relax. The safest bikers are surely the ones who have been riding for many years, so don’t think that a day’s CBT will prepare you for life on two wheels because it won’t. It merely gives you the basic skills and knowledge

Joe Francis receives his CBT certificate

you need to go out and practice until your bike becomes part of you, leaving your brain to fully concentrate on what’s going on around you. And there’s a lot to be said for moving up the ranks and doing your full licence to enable you to ride - a more powerful machine is heavier, more stable, with a lower centre of gravity, but it also has the oomph to get you out of a dangerous situation or safely keep up with traffic flow without getting pushed into the kerb by an impatient driver. Thankfully, both Joe and I proved our roadworthiness and were issued with a CBT certificate at the end of the day. I just hope he’s not quite so conservative in round eight of the Superstock 600 at Cadwell Park next weekend! www.joefrancisracing.com www.bennetts.co.uk www.mototech.u-net.com

THE RUNABOUT THAT THINKS IT’S A CRUISER FRESHLY ROAD-LEGAL LEARNER MARK BURROW GETS ACQUAINTED WITH ONE OF THE COOLER LEARNER BIKES, SUZUKI’S RV125 VANVAN

O

NCE you’ve got your CBT certificate, if you’re going to ride a smaller bike for a while, or even indefinitely, there’s a whole lot of choice out there. From scooters to sports bikes and everything in between, manufacturers know that the 125cc is a lifestyle choice for many and as such, they invest a lot in the look and feel. Suzuki’s RV125 VanVan first appeared in the 1970s but was reintroduced in 2003. Its looks are deceiving - with classic retro styling and those big balloon tyres, it feels like a bigger bike and with a comfy seat and relaxed riding position, it’s become a cult classic. It’s certainly a lot cooler than a twist and go scooter and it doesn’t promise anything it can’t deliver, unlike some of the betterlooking 125cc sports bikes. Then of course there’s the economy - ride it carefully and word is you’ll get up to 90mpg out of this baby. Combining comfort and economy, it’s a great commuter bike, that will draw admiring

glances around the city centre plenty of people took a second glance at my review bike. But that said, the VanVan doesn’t feel uncomfortable or underpowered on a longer ride - my first commute home from the office was a relaxing 26-mile jaunt along Lancashire’s A roads and was thoroughly enjoyable. The VanVan has a reliable fuelinjection air-cooled four-stroke engine which makes for easy starting and instant throttle response. And it hits 60mph with ease which means you can safely

keep up with traffic on any of the roads you’re allowed to ride on CBT. With my CBT certificate under my belt, I’m still debating whether to ride a smaller bike for a while to gain some experience, or whether to make the leap and go straight to a big bike test. But if I find myself in the market for a 125, the VanVan will be difficult to beat. Suzuki RV125 VanVan RRP £3,145 www.suzuki.co.uk

THINKING OF TAKING UP MOTORCYCLING? MAKE SURE YOU’RE FULLY PREPARED FOR ANY EVENTUALITY WITH A FEW SIMPLE PIECES OF SAFETY EQUIPMENT

HEN you’re riding a motorbike, you’re exposed to a lot more than just the elements. There’s a strong chance you might fall or be knocked from your bike, so it’s wise to invest in a few basic safety items. There’s an enormous amount of kit available across all budgets,

Think about how easy it is to twist your ankle just walking down the street and then think about what could happen to that vulnerable part of your body should you take a tumble from your bike. A good solid pair of boots offers protection for your foot, ankle and lower leg, plus they’re reinforced in the areas which may wear out during riding.

20 LEXUS STARTS PRODUCTION OF NX CROSSOVER

THE arrival of the first Lexus NX crossover model in the UK has become closer following the official start of production at the brand’s Miyata plant in Japan. More than 350 UK customers have submitted their orders for the NX 300h and deliveries are due to begin in October. While the Miyata plant has responsibility for finished vehicle manufacturing, the neighbouring Kanda engine production plant has had a new lease of life thanks to the start of NX production. Following the decline in the global car market after 2008, production was reduced at Kanda with the shutdown of one of its two production lines. But the second line has returned to life and will supply the new 2.0-litre petrol turbo unit for the NX 200t variant.

‘SELFIE’ AT THE WHEEL DANGER

FORD’S research for its Driving Skills for Life programme has revealed that young British drivers are the most likely to take a ‘selfie’ while at the wheel. According to the survey, British drivers were the most likely to photograph themselves while on the move (33 per cent), ahead of counterparts in Germany (28), France (28), Romania (27), Italy (26), Spain (18) and Belgium (17). The survey of 7,000 smartphone users aged 18 to 24 from across Europe also showed one in four people had used social media sites behind the wheel and that young male drivers were the most likely to ignore the risks. Nearly all drivers surveyed agreed the activities were dangerous. Ford has found that snapping a selfie at the wheel could distract a driver for 14 seconds and checking social media distracts for as much as 20 seconds – long enough, at 60mph, to travel the length of five football pitches. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for young drivers and Ford last year introduced to Europe the Driving Skills for Life programme to provide handson training to more than 5,000 18 to 24-year-olds and online training for thousands more.

SMALL BUT PERFECTLY FORMED

T

HE all-new Peugeot 108 takes city car versatility to a new level. With a raft of enhancements over its predecessor - the hugely popular 107 - the newcomer is an urban runabout that’s exceptionally user-friendly for day-to-day motoring. Some of the improvements have taken place in the boot, a vital and often under-appreciated area of consideration for today’s small car buyer. Now boasting 196 litres of carrying capacity - up from 139 litres on the Peugeot 107 - it’s large enough for the ‘weekly shop’ from the supermarket. The boot sill is also 20mm lower for easier loading. Another practical innovation is the new parcel shelf. Gone is the solid unit of the outgoing model, replaced by a neat fabric cover which conveniently lies

THE ALLNEW PEUGEOT 108 OFFERS A MORE PRACTICAL PROPOSITION FROM THE FRENCH MANUFACTURER flat against the inside of the hatchback glass when the boot is open. As the boot is pulled down, the cover cleverly pivots to the horizontal, hiding whatever is below. The hatchback itself now features twin gas struts for additional stability when open, compared to the single support on the 107. Also at the rear of the Peugeot 108 is another convenience feature - a reversing camera built into the rear bumper, just above the number plate. It’s standard on the two highest trim levels in the range, Allure and Feline. The rear bench seat splits 50:50 for additional practicality, and each side can be folded using a separate fabric handle accessible from the boot. Interestingly, these handles are the only component of the 107 carried over to the new car.

Two rear seat ISOFIX child seat fixing points are standard on the Peugeot 108. Available in three and five-door body styles, the car has generous interior space for up to four occupants, with almost identical cabin measurements to the 107. The driver’s seat is now heightadjustable on all but the entry level, Access trim, and on threedoor models both front seats gain a memory function. This means they will always return to the same position when tilted forward to allow passengers into the rear. Furthermore, seat quality, comfort and support have been improved dramatically when compared to the 107. The Peugeot 108 is a car customers can happily sit in for long journeys should the need arise. Premium features are part of the 108 ownership experience.

“THE 107 AND 108 SHARE THE SAME ROOTS BUT THE 108 IS A MUCH MORE MATURE VEHICLE. IT’S A REAL PEUGEOT”

Peugeot 108’s interior

On all but Access trim level the car comes with a multi-function steering wheel, allowing drivers to keep their hands and eyes where they should be as they travel. For comfort, air conditioning is standard on three out of the four trim levels, including - for the first time - climate control on top spec Feline models. Cabin storage has also been upgraded. For example, the passenger-side glovebox now has a lid for the first time and

includes a horizontal cut-out section which is designed to take a one-litre drinks bottle. These are just some of the ways Peugeot has made the all-new 108 an exceptionally practical vehicle, improving on the already high standards of the 107 to meet the needs of today’s small car buyer. Ivo Groën, design director of the Peugeot 108, said: “The 107 and 108 share the same roots but the 108 is a much more mature vehicle. It’s a real Peugeot.”
