Dental Implants & Cosmetics Our sixth Christmas is nearly upon us and we feel as though we have only just opened up. Since opening the very smart and modern dental practice in the centre of town we have been busy from day one trying to help the people of Huddersfield and beyond to fill their gaps and brighten their smiles. The practice is run by Dr Robin Warne who is the lead dental surgeon at the practice and is helped by Dr Maurice Levi who also works at the practice. By Christmas 2011 they will have 65 years of experience between them. Both dentists are education orientated and both keep up with the latest trends and practices, which are at the forefront of this modern thinking private dental clinic. Dr Warne regularly updates his education in the UK as well as travelling abroad to learn from other dentists regarded as being at the forefront of their particular field to allow him to gel all the information together to allow him to do dentistry to the best of his ability. He is often more picky than the patient and customises most of his work in his own laboratory to give that personal touch. It might take a bit longer but the results speak for themselves.
Although as the practice name implies we only do Implants and Cosmetic dentistry we do all aspects of dental care. Although Dr Warne has placed about 1500 dental implants since the practice opened its doors. Appointments can be made directly with the practice or you could be referred by your own dentist if you ask them. Many of the dentists of Huddersfield refer to Huddersfield Dental Implants & Cosmetics for dental implants, cosmetic solutions, root fillings and for the nervous, sedation. Initial appointments last 30 minutes for routine dentistry or 45 minutes for implant consultations.
If you would like Robins opinion about your teeth or gaps then why not call the practice on 01484 537222 or call in when your passing the practice in the centre of Huddersfield down Albert Yard just up from the Library.
Dr. Robin Warne B.Ch.D. M.Sc. Implant Dentistry. PG Cert Sedation Dr. Robin Warne has built a reputation since qualifying from the University of Leeds in 1985. Dining Out Picture, if you will, this scene: screaming kids, Great Aunt Flo, pretending to be deaf, a bevy of relatives, slowly getting the worse for wear, and a bad tempered dog skulking in the corner. >
6 Christmas 2011
Festive Fun Add to this a dollop of teary Christmas telly, a hot, sweaty kitchen with the humidity hitting Hong Kong’s peak, over-cooked vegetables boiling dry, a turkey that stubbornly refuses to submit to the proportions of the oven – and a thoroughly hassled ‘chef (i.e. you!). Get the drift? Worst case scenario this may be; but ask yourself – do you honestly want all this? On Christmas Day? Unsurprisingly, the answer for all but the severest of masochists, is ‘no’. Those who have Christmas well and truly wrapped, simply shut the door of Home Sweet Home behind them and, suitably coiffed up to the nines, make their merry way to a fabulous fine dining experience (with all the trimmings) in the gorgeous setting of tranquil country hotel, or similar. >

The trend for dining out at Christmas is gaining ground as more and more of us are throwing in the tea towel and casting our oven gloves aside as we learn the simple fact that There Is Another Way.
gift wrapping like our lives depended on it, and veritable siege planning that the season inexorably entails. Let’s face it, one would have to be a hairy hermit occupying a cave not to feel the peer pressure.
Although we all bemoan the fact that Christmas Has Got Too Commercial, we cannot help but get sucked into the melee that is late night shopping, queueing to the environs of Bethlehem itself, card writing in the early hours,
Dining out at Christmas, on the other hand, is a totally stress free experience. All you have to do, is book your seats in good time. Leaving this to the eleventh hour will result in certain disappointment. >

Festive Fun Because, make no mistake, competition for Christmas tables is intense. Rest on your laurels at your peril, therefore. Take heed, and book now to avoid one unholy rumpus at Chez Vous! Being left, bereft, with not a morsel in the cupboard, come Christmas Day, is simply unthinkable. Even the homeless have soup kitchens supplying their own targeted brand of goodwill to all men. And wrestling a vagrant to the ground for his portion of cranberry sauce is just not cricket. > Seriously though, dining out for Christmas is a savvy way to spend the day. What’s more, its pleasing effects are cumulative. You awake, refreshed from a wonderful night’s sleep (after all, there is nothing on your mind); or perhaps, you are woken by your children, and delight in their innocence as they open gifts from that most kindly and generous of men, Santa Claus.
10 Christmas 2011
Next, you have a leisurely champagne breakfast (naturally, your ‘driver’ has orange juice), and then retire upstairs to get ready. There then follows a prolonged period of pampering, during which no part of your body escapes attention. Then you emerge, the arch Stepford Wife, an ironic vision of lovliness, ripe to be waited on, hand and foot, and smug at the very thought. Forget all feelings of being the martyr. No, ‘Oh, but I couldn’t possibly’. Remember, in the words of that present day philosopher and mega pop diva, Cheryl Cole: ‘you’re worth it’. Cheers!

“Oh yes it is, oh no it isn’t?” Sound familiar? Yes it’s the start of the pantomime season. This year the Christmas production at Huddersfield’s Lawrence Batley Theatre is The Snow Queen which runs from Monday December 12 to, and including, a Christmas Eve matinee. This is the story of a magical mirror which is broken into a thousand pieces. A tiny shard finds its way into Kay’s eye and he finds himself bewitched by the Snow Queen. Can his best friend Gerda find the glittering ice palace, rescue Kay and break the evil spell? Across the region there will be pantomimes and shows galore throughout December and into January. Such shows are always popular with all ages and as always, there will be a wide selection of festive shows across the West Yorkshire region at all the major theatres. There’s nothing quite like a pantomime to get you into the spirit of the Christmas season so make sure you book seats early for your group.
12 Christmas 2011
Pantomimes are thought to have originated from the traditions of Italian street entertainment and British music hall. Travelling street entertainment in the Middle Ages was a mix of dance, music, tumbling and acrobatics etc so it’s easy to see how this translated itself into the origins of early pantomime.
This story takes the audience on a journey through deep forests, gloomy caves, palaces and floral glades for the conclusion of this popular tale. The production is based on the original Hans Christian Andersen stories. Remember that a gift voucher to use at the LBT is a great Christmas present.

Christmas Dinner It’s one of the most important meals of the year, your Christmas dinner is sure to delight those all around, so you need to make sure the table decor doesn’t let you down! Try to make sure your Christmas theme is carried throughout your home, so if you’ve opted for a traditional red and gold theme around the tree continue the theme into the dining room. This classic red and gold look is one that is on trend every year, sometimes with a modern twist other times carrying a Victorian feel with charm and character. Combine rich gold-coloured plates with red Christmas crackers and a beautiful wreath-style centrepiece and maybe even a grand candelabra.
Another key trend is silvers and whites, think snowflakes and glimmering angels, you’ll create a white winter wonderland with plenty of glitz. You could use white candles as your centrepiece surrounded by glittering silver baubles and spray painted holly leaves, team this with sparkling table confetti and it’ll be wonderful for your guests. >
Christmas 2011

Festive Fun A big theme this year is greens, blues and plum tones all teamed together which gives a more novelty feel yet with beautiful crockery it’ll still look elegant with a festive twist. This bright coloured theme conjures up images of elves in toy workshops all glittering with excitement, so it’ll be the perfect festive scheme to enjoy your Christmas dinner. Whatever colour theme you decide to opt for you need to think about all the matching accessories to go with them. There’s Christmas crackers, napkin rings, place names, table mats and table cloths, maybe a runner down the centre and some people even have festive ‘favours’ on the table too.
18 Christmas 2011
Of course there’s the crockery and wine glasses to think about, and don’t forget to have some tumblers on hand for a touch of brandy or sherry after the meal, especially if you’ve got a Christmas pudding coming out! Also you need to decide if you’re going to be putting the food on to plates or letting people help themselves from dishes on the table. Remember you’ll need to allow for space if you opt for the latter choice and it’ll be best to have heat-proof mats on hand to place under the hot serving plates on the table, and do you have enough dishes to serve on the table? There’s plenty to think about, but no matter what your colour theme and dining style be sure to relax and tuck in to your Christmas dinner!
Glamour
Relax With the lead up to Christmas such a stressful time it’s the perfect reason to stop and take a few hours to clear your mind and unwind. Planning the festive feast, picking out the ideal present, finding the right outfit to wear and ensuring it’s all done within budget are just some of the things to think about. But you’re not going to enjoy your Christmas if you’re frazzled and stressed! A touch of pampering is the ideal treat, even something as simple as getting a manicure or pedicure can do wonders, plus if you decide to get Shellac or Minx they won’t chip and should last for two weeks ensuring your talons look lovely the whole time.
20 Christmas 2011
A facial is another beauty treatment that’s worth investing in and can be very relaxing leaving you with beautiful glowing skin. These days you can select a facial that’s perfect for your skin type, maybe you need something to hydrate, reduce the sight of pores, exfoliate or assist with anti-aging, your skin will look and feel so much better after a good facial. >
Glamour A massage is wonderful the week before Christmas, all your tensions can be released with a de-stressing head and shoulder massage or a full back massage, if you want to truly unwind for an hour then a full body massage can work wonders in getting you ready to enjoy the festivities. Of course, if you’ve got time then a trip to a beauty spa for a full pamper session will be a festive gift even before Santa arrives. You could be indulged from top to toe, and if there’s a pool or Jacuzzi at the facilities you could spend the whole day thinking simply about relaxing and nothing more. Holistic therapies are also really popular and are intended to treat the mind, body and spirit. Treatments such as reiki, reflexology, hot stone massage, aromatherapy and Hopi ear candles are just a small selection of holistic beauty treatments you can enjoy and are sure to clear away all the tense Christmas feelings.
And if you don’t quite have the money to indulge in a little me time at a beauty salon, then you need to at least ensure you can capture an hour or two at home to yourself. Run yourself a relaxing bath full of luxury muscle relaxing bubble bath teamed with a handful of sea salts, which helps moisturise your skin while you unwind. Once you’ve relaxed, when you get out the bath make sure you apply rich body butter within a few minutes to lock in maximum moisture. So whether you steal an hour to yourself at home, without thinking about the housework, or head off to a luxury beauty salon, make sure you treat yourself to a little relaxation this festive season.

Whether you love the big bold statements dress jewellery brings or prefer something elegant with a sparkling diamond, there are plenty of ways to accessorise. One thing’s for sure when you’re dressing this festive season you need to ensure you’ve got the perfect jewels to complete your look. Oversized cuff-style bangles are a key trend this season, making a real focal point and teamed with big earrings you’ll be sure to stand out for all the right reasons. Browns, golds and oranges are key colour trends this year reflecting the autumnal tones, although bright, vibrant shades are also hitting the stores such as electric blues, emerald greens and striking purples.
If you prefer your jewels to showcase real gems and beautiful diamonds then there’s a whole selection of stunning necklaces, rings, bracelets and earrings that are the perfect accessories. Rose gold is becoming ever more popular, while white gold is still a firm favourite with many, yet it’s yellow gold that’s made a resurgence this year and it’s popular with many ages in an abundance of styles. So whether it’s classic elegance you’re after or bold party jewellery, there’s something for everyone this festive season.

NORDIC inspirations Inspired by cosy log cabins on snowy mountain sides, this year’s trend for Nordic interiors is sweeping the nation. All about pale rustic woods and retro reindeer prints, teamed with glistening silver accessories, the Nordic look is fantastically festive. The trend works particularly well in modern homes and strikes the perfect balance between homely and minimalistic. In living rooms embrace the style with white walls, a dove grey fabric sofa, faux wall mounted antlers and plenty of coordinated red, gingham and dark green cushions as well as wood and wicker accessories.
And keep to this theme in your dining room too. On walls, the decor should be neutral with a biscuit or ivory shade and add a splash of drama or colour with matching accessories and furnishings. An impressive chandelier, for instance, makes a bold focal point for any entertaining space. Or arrange a cluster of rustic tealights or wooden hearts embellished with red ribbon on your sideboard for a subtle nod to all things Nordic. Either way, you can incorporate as little or as much as you’d like. Upstairs, bedrooms are another space that lends itself well to the Nordic trend. Opt for cosy throws and cushions, drift wood table lamps and red curtains with simple white duvet covers and wooden furniture and flooring. Not only will it look great, but it will also provide the perfect retreat when you need a few minutes peace from the kids and Christmas madness. You could even use the Nordic trend as a theme for your Christmas table. A great way to bring the theme into your home if you don’t want, or need to, decorate an entire room. To decorate, drape a white cloth over the table with ivory or pale wood place mats and a matching runner, complemented by silver charger plates and sparkling glassware to create a glistening spread. Add a few antiquesilver candlesticks or a glass vase filled with pine cones in the centre of the table completes the look - and hey presto, you’ve got the perfect table for family get-togethers and festive soirees with friends! >

Home
Make sure you give your home a good de-clutter too. It’s not only therapeutic ahead of the Christmas madness, but it’s also crucial to the mess-free Nordic look. If you’re struggling, fit extra shelves in alcoves, buy bookshelves and storage units to keep things out of sight. Whichever room you want to give a Nordic nudge, with a bit of imagination you’ll have the perfect home this Christmas.

Deck the Halls... A few garlands, some twinkling fairy lights and a sprinkling of imagination are all you need to transform your staircase this Christmas! It’s an area of the home that many people neglect, but with a bit of sprucing up can look spectacular. Start by wrapping a luxurious fir garland around the bannister of your staircase. A thick green garland is a key part of any festive stairway, and gives you a perfect base to begin your decorating. If you can, buy a garland with classic white fairy lights built into it. The soft glow of the lights creates a stunning effect and will give your hallway a real ‘wow’ factor. If it doesn’t come pre-lit - no problem simply wind a separate string of fairy lights around the garland, taking care to keep the wire out of sight.
26 Christmas 2011
It’s then time to decide what extra decorations you’d like to use. It’s a good idea to take a look at your hall to see what ‘style’ would work best in your home. Do you prefer traditional decor or something a touch more modern? Is the rest of your home themed? If so it’s usually best to tie your stairway in with the overall style of your house. It might be, for instance, that you fancy customising your garland with pale gold organza ribbon and bows with white-tipped pine cones to complement your elegant hallway? >
Home Or maybe the rest of your home is brightly decorated and the staircase would be better suited to mini wreaths, pretty baubles, felt stockings and silver bells? In more modern properties, swap traditional garlands for strings of jewels or boughs of fir tree tied with ivory ribbon hung along the side of staircase. The Nordic trend is another popular style and is an excellent choice for sleek and chic decor. To get the look, opt for a white garland (or none at all) and team with simplistic wood and red decorations. You can use fresh foilage on your staircase too. They might be a touch more expensive than faux garlands but there’s not much that’s more Christmassy than the scent of pine needles as you walk through the door. Ask your local florist about the designs they offer, or you could even attempt to make some decorations yourself.
Why not take a few sprigs of holly from your garden to add to your faux garland? The real thing can make all the difference. Another great aspect about decorating your staircase is that it really doesn’t have to cost a lot. Affordable fairy lights and garlands are available in many shops - or you could even make the most of what you’ve already got. Most of us are guilty of hoarding too many decorations and you may perhaps have some left over. How about that set of matching stockings? Or those wooden stars that you bought in the sale last year? A few decorations artfully hung on your stairway can create a fantastic festive scene. If you are using lights, make sure that they can be left next to tinsel or wrapped around wood for a sustained period of time too. The last thing you want is to cause a fire! Whatever look you choose, it really is easy to create a fantastic festive staircase.

Christmas just isn’t about decorating our interiors. As the trend for bringing the celebrations outdoors gathers pace, it is about time we surveyed our options. Naturally, Christmas is synonymous with light. And there is nothing guaranteed to warm the cockles of our hearts than the sight of twinkling bulbs adorning our homes.
Christmas lights remind us of the real meaning behind the madness. And so, by installing them in our homes and gardens, we are giving others pleasure, as well as ourselves.
From traditional, fun multicoloured lights we know so well from childhood – a technicolour dream, if ever there was one – to chic blue icicles, clinging for dear life from eaves; sophisticated, neutral net lights, draped over trees and bushes like gossamer, and imparting a delightful show that never fails to enchant, to, well, anything you please. The only limit to your Yuletide display is your imagination and your budget.
Some people go that step further and cloak their homes with light, for charity. And what better way to show goodwill to all men, than by doing something for a deserving cause close to your heart? Neon messages of good cheer are another fun way to spread your own personal brand of seasonal goodwill. A simple, ‘Happy Christmas’, strategically positioned in a window or exterior wall, will give passers by a warm glow inside. >

Home If you are of the opinion that minimalism is definitely best, then why not opt for an understated electric ‘candle’ display, placed in a window for others to enjoy? You don’t have to go the whole hog to be effective. From Santas scaling chimneys, to illuminated Rudolphs, gracing the garden; whatever your taste, there is something just up your street that is perfect for your personality and your space. A word to the wise: when purchasing any Christmas lights, whether they are destined for outdoors, or inside, do make sure they are manufactured for the purpose you intend them for, and that they meet European safety standards. Read and follow instructions on their installation carefully. Think twice before climbing up ladders, and, if you must, ensure there is someone there with you at all times.
30 Christmas 2011
Check too, that any cables are fit for purpose and waterproof; and never overload extension sockets. Now all that is required is for you to carry out your own personal switch on. ‘3, 2, 1 ...!’ Of course, you can create an impression without lights. Christmas wreaths are a perennial tradition that never fails to weave its spell. What could be more welcoming and seasonally apt than a lavish evergreen creation, interwoven with whatever you fancy, and fixed to your front door? Originally designed to ward off evil odours at a time when folk shared their homes with their livestock, and when hatches were battoned down for warmth (quite!), evergreen foliage, thus employed, now has a much more aesthetic purpose. Inspired? Then what are you waiting for?

Town Centre Shopping The history of Byram Arcade dates back to 1880 when it was designed by architect Mr W H Atkinson. In the 1920s it was acquired by the former Huddersfield Corporation and more recently refurbished over a number of years by Kirklees Council. Much of the paintwork is in keeping with the age and feel of the arcade and true to the Victorian roots. Today it is a splendid example of an old historical arcade which has been brought back to life to be enjoyed as a vibrant part of the town. If you want to enjoy a bite to eat while you’re shopping, the arcade is home to two restaurants where you can enjoy a sandwich, full meal or a coffee and a cake.
34 Christmas 2011
The arcade is open six days a week Monday to Saturday and has a passenger lift as well as stairs to the top floors. It’s an ideal place to browse and soak in the atmosphere of one of the finest examples of Victorian architecture in the local area.

Springfield Mill Denby Dale Enjoy a drive out to Denby Dale before Christmas and pick up some great gift ideas. Situated in the centre of Denby Dale village is the everpopular Springfield Mill which now has quite a few new businesses in its midst.
As a former working textile mill, it produced the bolt of silk which was used to make the wedding dress for our late Queen Mother.
With plenty of parking in the former mill yard, Springfield Mill offers a wide and varied choice of retail outlets, many of which offer great gift ideas for this festive time of year.
It also produced parachute silk and khaki shirting for use during the Second World War.
Walk around the mill complex and you’ll find outlets selling health foods, shoes, stationery, wine, homeware and interiors, fashions and much more. Historically Springfield Mill has much to commend it and even has links to Royalty.
More recently some new shops have moved into the Springfield Mill complex, thus offering visitors even more choice. All businesses pride themselves on offering a warm welcome, traditional service and excellent choice and quality.

Lindley This Christmas why not enjoy a visit to the annual festive shopping evening being held in Lindley on Tuesday December 6. There’ll be lots going on all evening for all ages including face painting, musical entertainment from a Christmas choir, fireworks, a Santa’s grotto, competitions and much more. Huddersfield Town manager Lee Clark is all set to turn on the Christmas lights and the whole evening will raise money for Whiteknights, a motorcycle charity which involves volunteers delivering emergency supplies and bloods to hospitals outside of normal working hours.
Last year the event raised enough money to fund the training of a guide dog for the blind. A guide dog puppy, appropriately called Lindley, is currently in training. Remember that Lindley is a great shopping centre all year round with many specialist shops along the main Lidget Street.

Perfect for browsing any time of year, these shops are a must for picking up a great bargain in time for Christmas. If you’re looking for festive food, then there are a number of local outlets who can provide you with meat, vegetables, drinks etc, all in time for Christmas lunch. You can pick up a host of Christmas foods including meat or poultry, pies, cooked meats etc. A good number of shops can offer you a great choice of Christmas gifts, so if you’re looking for something different, take a look. Marsh in particular is a bustling area with shops either side of the main road which eventually takes motorists to the M62. The shopping area of Paddock, which stretches along Church Street and around the village roundabout, has a range of well established shops which have served the local area for years. One of the beauties of shopping out of town is that car parking is more plentiful and free. So park up and enjoy a wander round Marsh and Paddock this Christmas and you might be surprised at what you find.

Perfect Christmas Gifts The shops are full of Christmas gifts - but sometimes we still struggle to find that perfect present. Whether you’re buying for family or friends, the selection of gifts is endless - but where do you start? Some people are easy to buy for, especially if they have a particular interest or hobby. Are they a keen gardener or artist etc? Do they like cooking, travel or driving etc? If so it can be relatively easy to pick up a gift. As always women are easier to buy for than men. If in doubt you can always buy perfume, toiletries, chocolates, foodstuffs or something for the home. Men can be a little more difficult, especially if they seem to be `the man who has everything’. A voucher for his favourite shop is always one answer to this perennial problem.
Take a look at the host of shops in Huddersfield and district to find inspiration. Often it’s the small independent retailers who have some more unusual gift choices and the bigger stores often run special offers on Christmas gifts. You’ve still got a few weeks to go before Christmas so plenty of time to look round and find something for even the most difficult relative or friend. In the last few weeks the shops will be open on Sundays and for late night shopping on Thursdays. Bite the bullet, get your shopping list and head for the shops!

Gifts for him
What do you buy for the man who has everything? At this time of year, that’s a question many people will be asking, but it’s really not something to worry about, because no matter how much stuff a man accumulates in his life, he’ll always be after more. It’s one of life’s great joys for men, looking for more stuff we’d like to buy or we’d like someone to buy for us! Look at the amount of specialist magazines aimed at men that are basically just filled with things for them to buy. Whether it be computers, gadgets, clothes, cars, boats or even model trains, men love to get more stuff – and that’s why the men in your life should be easy to buy for this Christmas. Look at what they already like or what you’ve bought them before. It may not be original, but chances are they’ll be very happy with some more of that. Be it beer or whisky, war or western films on Blu-Ray or DVD, socks or undies even these are all things men can never have enough of! But if you do want to get dad something different this year,
52 Christmas 2011
never fear – there’s loads to choose from. How about sending your man off on a track day where he’ll get the chance to drive sports cars and luxury vehicles like Porsches and Aston Martins? It’s one of those once-in-alifetime experiences that he’ll never forget. Maybe flying lessons or a parachute jump if he’s a daredevil? If not you could always play it safe and buy him a round of golf at a swanky club or some new clubs for when he next hits the fairway. Things like cameras, mobile phones, mp3 players or bits for his computer will always go down a treat. Boys like toys, after all. And there’ll be clothes he wants, trainers perhaps, that aftershave he loves. He’d enjoy tickets to the match or a tour of his beloved club’s stadium. Or combine the two? Clubs often offer a package which includes lunch or dinner at one of their VIP suites so check that out.
If it’s a romantic prezzie you’re considering, something simple like a meal for two at his favourite restaurant will be great and something to look forward to after Christmas. Or if you’re a bit skint, why not a card saying you’ll cook him a romantic dinner at home? Perhaps even set the date and the menu out on it. If it’s a gift for a brother, cousin or friend and you’re not sure what he’d like, you could play it safe and grab a gift voucher
or go novelty and buy him a fun present. At this time of year the shops are full of crazy gizmos and boy’s toys – perfect presents for any man to enjoy at Christmas, from drinking games to remote controlled cars and much more besides. So, for the man who seems to have everything remember that, at Christmas especially, you can never have too much of a good thing.
Gifts for her
Christmas Shopping
It’s fair to say that us women can seem notoriously tricky to buy for at Christmas - but it doesn’t have to be a chore. With a little bit of thought and forward planning (men, take note!), it’s easy to show your mum, sister, best friend or wife how much you care. For style conscious-ladies, a new pair of shoes or gorgeous leather handbag are all but guaranteed to make her smile and it’s hard to go wrong with designer make-up. Jewellery is another firm favourite, or it could that she’s a big tech-fan and a new Kindle or fitness game for the Wii or Kinect is more her thing? The most important part of buying any Christmas gift is the thought that’s gone into it. She’s no doubt been thinking of what to buy you for months and spent hours pouring over what you’d like, so make sure that you make her feel just as special. You don’t have to stick to ‘normal’ gifts either. If you know she loves fashion, shopping vouchers are sure to be gratefully received. Or maybe there’s a touring West End show in your local theatre that she’s dying to see? Gift tokens for a massage or facial are another popular present, as are pamper days at a luxury spa. Likewise, there are a fantastic selection of stocking fillers on a smaller budget. From bath sets, boxes of chocolates and bottles of wine, to classic chick flicks and old music albums, you can pick up hundreds of great gifts at bargain prices. You could indulge her sweet-tooth and make her a hamper filled with her favourite chocolate bars, retro sweets and cakes. Or how about a ‘bathtime relaxation’ gift bag? Simply fill with bath soaks, scented candles, chocolate, a mini bottle of wine and a copy of her favourite magazine.
Shopping Tips for Men If you look forward to shopping for the lady in your life, as much as you look forward to going to the dentist, check out these top tips to buy a great gift... Think about what sort of things she enjoys doing, as well as what she’d love (as opposed to what she needs). What’s her favourite perfume? Has she pointed out an outfit that she loves in a shop recently? Does she dream of being whisked away for the weekend? It’s time to start listening to those subtle hints she’s more than likely dropping!
1. Give yourself plenty of time and don’t rush it.
If you’re really struggling, why not suggest going to the shops together and see what she points out. Or you could write a list of ideas for one another. You don’t have to buy everything on it but it will give you a few ideas and things to pick out.
3. Steer clear of buying her a household appliance. Unless, that is, you want to be cooking Christmas dinner for one next year!
There really are a fantastic selection of gifts to suit any budget, so make sure that pull out all the stops and treat her to something special this Christmas.
2. Think about the person that you are buying for. What do they buy for themselves? What would they like to buy for themselves but can’t afford. It becomes obvious when you listen.
4. At times when many of us are tightening our belts, buy a gift that she couldn’t otherwise afford but would love. Eg. that designer handbag, a weekend away in a boutique hotel. 5. It really doesn’t have to cost a lot, but buy at least one gift that will make her ecstatic.
If you’re a man buying for the special women in your life you’re no doubt dreading the annual shopping trip, but it’s easy to get a gift that will score you some serious brownie points.

Gifts for teens
Top of most people’s ‘hard to buy for’lists has got to be teenagers.
Our teenage years are an awkward age, when we’re not quite children, not quite adults and finding a Christmas gift that strikes the right balance for a teenager can be notoriously hard.
Buy your teenage niece or nephew something they deem too young and they’ll probably never use it and may throw something of a strop on Christmas morning. Equally, you could land yourself in hot water if you buy them something they love – but their parents think is too old and inappropriate for them. Keeping track of what’s deemed cool and what’s not, can be a minefield for the uninformed but well-meaning relative. You could give them cash in a card, but where’s the Christmas spirit in that? So, instead of simply copping out by giving them cash, why not buy them a gift voucher or a gift experience which they can tailor to their own choices? That way you get to give a thoughtful gift and they get something they will like. There’s a never-ending array of gift vouchers and the like on the market, so you’re sure to find something that suits their interests. If they love music, but you’re not sure which albums they have or which bands they would like to see, why not treat them to a gift voucher for a music shop, i-Tunes, a local music venue or a ticket retailer? That way, they can choose which gig they go to, CD they buy or music they download for themselves. Teenagers are often just developing their own sense of style too, so a gift voucher for a fashion store is an ideal festive present for a fashion-loving teen. As well as the usual gift vouchers, many of the bigger high street stores and department stores also now offer personal shopper services, so they can shop like a VIP for the day, or have a style consultation while they choose their new clobber.
54 Christmas 2011
Likewise, gift vouchers for a local makeup studio or for a trendy hair and beauty salon, would also make ideal gifts for a hard-to-buy-for teenage daughter or niece. Or, how about a gift set from prestigious make-up, men’s grooming, aftershave or perfume brand that they wouldn’t be able to buy for themselves, as a treat? It will be both something they’ll appreciate – because they probably know how expensive it is – and it’s a grown-up gift to boot. Jewellery is another good gift for teenage girls, but be sure to choose something which can be returned, such as a watch or necklace, in case it is not to their taste. Boys meanwhile will love the newest official kit for their favourite footy or rugby team; the latest must-have Playstation or Xbox game or gadget. Gift experiences are another good gift for teenagers. There are a wide range of themed experience days available, most of which allow the recipient to choose from a number of options, what they would like to do. An activity experience day gift voucher, for example, may let your teenage son choose between snowboarding for the day, go-karting or rock climbing. While a pampering experience day may let your teenage daughter choose between a luxurious spa treatment, a haircut or a manicure. If they’re something of a chocoholic, you could get them an experience day in a local chocolatiers, where they get to have a go at making their own truffles. Or, if they love watching Britain’s Next Top Model, why not get them a make-over and photo-shoot gift experience? With such a wealth of gift experiences on the market, you are sure to find a gift experience that suits your teenager’s interests. And, if you’re still unsure – make sure you keep the receipt!
Gifts for pets
Christmas Shopping
We all love our pets – sometimes more than our relatives! – so make sure they’re not forgotten about this Christmas and give them a fabulous treat too.
It can be something small such as a furry fake mouse or something more exciting like a challenging agility kit for dogs. Finding the ideal gift for your pet should be the one stress-free present to discover, they’ll be thankful for most things! Maybe you could buy them a new stylish bed that will be comfortable for them and still look good in your home? A selection of chew toys and tug ropes is always a good choice for a dog to keep them away from your furniture, and even a scratch post for your cat would be a good present for them and your home!
Nowadays there are even dog puzzles that challenge them and stop them getting bored, toys such as IQ puzzles and food treat puzzles are ideal. You could even treat your dog to a grooming session, a little hair cut and trim of the nails may make them feel like they’ve been pampered. And once they’ve been groomed why not get them a little festive jumper to keep them warm?
Don’t forget about your little furry friends too, you can get Christmas themed beds for them to sleep in and festive tunnels where they can play, so your pets can join in the festivities with you. Here’s a small selection of pet friendly gifts that are sure to delight...

Recycle this Christmas While you’re enjoying your Christmas break, remember to recycle as much as possible.
Think about everything you can recycle drinks bottles, Christmas cards and even your tree. Many supermarkets now have special containers for customers to drop their Christmas cards into after the festive holiday. These cards are then taken to paper mills for turning into new paper products.Alternatively you can pop them into your green bin to be taken for general recycling. Every year millions of festive cards are recycled and this practice is actively encouraged by the Woodland Trust who urge everyone to do their bit for the environment this Christmas. You must also remember to recycle your bottles from the Christmas period. Everyone always has more bottles than normal at Christmas time so remember to put out your glass bin for your local council to collect. If you don’t have this resource, then take your bottles along to the local bottle bank which can be found at supermarkets and refuse centres.
56 Christmas 2011
Many people choose to have a real Christmas tree in their home at this time of year but once the festive season is over, it can be a bit of a problem disposing of it. However if you can get it along to your local garden centre, many centres operate recycling machines which chop up Christmas trees and convert them into compost for use on their plants. Remember your bin collections will change slightly over the Christmas and New Year period. Your normal collection day may well change but your collecting team will put tags on each bin with information for the festive season. For two or three weeks only, your collection day may be slightly different to normal. Recycling all your Christmas products help to save on landfill space and save greenhouse gases. Make sure you do your bit this Christmas!

Travel Safely Stay safe this Christmas and New Year.
If you’re out and about at festive parties or visiting friends and relatives, you need to make sure your travel arrangements are in place so you can get home safely. When the nights are cold and dark, and there’s a chance of frost, ice or even snow, you need to make sure your car is in good working order. The last thing you need at Christmas is to get stuck miles away in a broken down vehicle and have to be towed home. >

Family Matters Have a word with your local garage to check your car is in good working order and organise a service if it’s due. Remember that local garages will be closed for a few days over the festive period so plan well in advance. Of course if you’re having a drink (or two) while you’re out and about, don’t take your car so you can’t be tempted to drink and drive. If you’re in a group and need transport, why not appoint a designated driver who will stay on the soft drinks for the evening? Not everyone drinks alcohol and there could well be a volunteer in your midst who could take responsibility for getting everyone home safe and sound. If you’re the driver, make sure you have de-icer and a scraper in the car so you can clear any ice from the windows before setting off. One answer is to book a taxi at a time to suit everyone. Taxi firms, of course, are really busy over Christmas and New Year so you will need to book a pick up in good time to ensure you aren’t disappointed.
58 Christmas 2011
Don’t leave it until the last minute or you might find all the local taxi firms are booked up. Use your common sense to travel safely over Christmas. Women particularly should avoid walking anywhere in the dark and putting themselves at risk. Keep yourself safe and have a great Christmas!

Family Matters
Festive
From childhood dreams of fairy-tale weddings to years of planning the perfect ceremony, it’s only natural that you’ll want your big day to be just right. And, if you’ve chosen a winter wedding - congratulations - as its undoubtedly one of the best seasons to tie the knot. A magical time of year, the glistening frost and winter weather transforms everything around it into a picture postcard scene and with so many great venues, as well as bridal fashions and decorations to complement the season you can guarantee that your wedding will be a winter wonderland. There is much to be done before the big day arrives, however, and it’s best to start by writing down any ideas that you may have and researching what’s available. Excellent organisational skills are the key to achieving your perfect wedding and it’s well worth visiting wedding fayres and bridal stores, as well as looking on websites and flicking through bridal magazines to get some inspiration. Many couples choose to begin by finding a venue and setting the date. One of the most important parts of the day, the venue will be responsible for setting the tone for much of the wedding and with a wealth of superb hotels, churches, stately homes, castles and many other venues all offering beautiful surroundings for your big day, you’re sure to find the ideal match.
60 Christmas 2011
Alternatively, perhaps you want to follow in the footsteps of Russell Brand and Katy Perry and hot foot it abroad? An increasingly popular choice, the world is your oyster and whether it’s a picturesque wedding in the snowy foothills of Canada, a beachside ceremony in Hawaii or a rustic castle in Tuscany, there are an excellent range of venues to choose from. Likewise, finding your dream wedding dress, along with the groom’s suit and bridesmaid dresses will also be at the top of your agenda. Whether it’s a sleek and sophisticated dress or a stunning gown fit for a princess, there are dozens of beautiful wedding dresses to suit every bride. And it doesn’t stop there! In addition to the venue and bridal wear, there are a wealth of other essential factors to arrange. From sorting out the transport, catering, entertainment, flowers, rings, photography, favours, cake, accessories, table decorations, honeymoon, stag and hen nights to finding a hairdresser and beauty salon that you trust, you’ll find everything you need right on your doorstep. All equally important, the finer details can have a huge impact on the day and as such deserve as much time and thought as the main arrangements.
Don’t be afraid to delegate jobs to close family and friends either. Planning a wedding can quickly become a full time job in itself and it’s easy to let things get on top of you so enlist the help of your parents, as well as the bridesmaids, ushers, maid of honour and best man to share duties out accordingly. But above all, just remember that this is your big day so enjoy it!

The Season
Jolly?
to be
It may be the‘season to be jolly’but not everyone always feels that way, and Christmas is often a time many people feel lonely or maybe have money troubles and fall into depression. Sometimes we all feel a little low, but if this sort of mood continues, gets worse and interferes with normal life, it may be depression. Whether you’re worried you may be becoming depressed or you think a family member or friend may often feel low, there is plenty of help available and people to talk to. >

Family Matters If you’re worried about someone, give them plenty of appropriate opportunities to talk. It can be difficult to start, but try questions such as “have you got anything on your mind?” or “is there something bothering you at the moment?” Let them pick the moment to talk about their problems. Invite those who seem isolated to join in social events and keep inviting them even if they refuse, which they may well do – people with depression often don’t feel like socialising, or feel their contribution won’t be of value. Try to understand and accept what they say or even how they act, and help them explore possible ways to sort things out. Be as supportive as you can, learn about the condition, and don’t expect them to snap back to their old self overnight. Depression is a complicated problem, there are often symptoms of other psychological problems, such as anxiety, panic attacks, obsessions or phobias, which mask the depression.
62 Christmas 2011
Some of the following are common symptoms • Depressed mood • Loss of interest in life, even in favourite hobbies or sports • Loss of pleasure – getting no feelings of enjoyment, even from things most people would greatly enjoy • Tiredness and fatigue • Impaired concentration • Suicidal thoughts • Changes in appetite, either increased or decreased, including either weight gain or loss • Changes in sleeping patterns – most typical is waking unusually early and not being able to get back to sleep, but some people can’t get out of bed and others roam around all day and night unable to sleep at all
• Agitation and tetchiness or, alternatively, extreme placidity, which may go as far as physically slowing down • Constant physical problems with no return to feeling well despite treatment If you do feel depressed this Christmas period don’t hesitate to call someone who can help and listen. Or if you know someone who seems low check they’re ok and call them to see if they want to talk. You’re not alone, there’s help available.

Coping with bereavement at Christmas When a family member or friend passes away, the grief and pain of being bereaved can feel devastating, particularly at Christmas time. It may take months or years to come to terms with what’s happened, and every part of us is affected with the most intense, and often overwhelming, feelings. It’s important to remember, however, that there is no wrong or right way to grieve or deal with bereavement.
64 Christmas 2011
Just like other situations in life, everyone reacts differently and as a result they will seek different ways to cope. Feelings of sadness, anger, loneliness, shock, disbelief, numbness, anxiety and helplessness are all natural emotions and crying, becoming withdrawn, insomnia, absent-mindedness and even hallucinations are also common. >
Family Matters Other factors surrounding the loss may also affect the grieving process. Perhaps your loved one died suddenly and you didn’t get the chance to say goodbye? Or maybe you weren’t present at the death and don’t feel ready to let go? Whatever it is, certain circumstances can make it more difficult to come to terms with a death, and it’s understandable that you might find it harder to grieve fully. If this is the case, make sure that you, or the person affected, is surrounded by a strong support network of close friends and family and if necessary seek professional help from bereavement charities. So how can we help ourselves or a loved one going through bereavement? The first step is to understand and appreciate that you’ve just suffered a huge loss, and accept that it’s natural to feel lost or that life is meaningless to begin with. Grief is something that
can take a long time to get over, but there are some steps you can take to ease yourself through the darkest times. Remember to care for yourself and be kind too. Take things slowly and don’t make any big decisions too soon. Try to avoid drinking an excess amount of alcohol or taking sleep medication for a long period of time as well. And, if you can, try to deal with your feelings by writing them down or sharing your pain with friends and family. Talking therapies are also one of the best ways to help cope with bereavement, and counselling or support groups where you can talk to other people who have been bereaved are widely available. Of course, learning to adapt to your new life is one of the biggest challenges and just like a physical injury recovering from a bereavement will take time.

Family Matters
How will you be spending Christmas this year? Are you having a traditional festive celebration with family and friends? Are you going away for the Christmas and New Year period to enjoy a holiday overseas? Let’s take a look at how some familiar faces in the Huddersfield area will be marking the big day. Local restaurateur Robert Mellman will be taking a day off from work on Christmas Day itself, but apart from that will be working throughout the festive season at his popular Argento Restaurant in John William Street, Huddersfield. He said: “The restaurant is closed Christmas Day but open again on Boxing Day. On Christmas Day I will be spending time with the family, opening presents, sitting down to a traditional Christmas lunch, visiting friends and watching TV including the Queen’s Speech.’’ Robert will be enjoying a day off from food preparation and cooking when he sits down to lunch with around 20 family members. For the rest of the holiday, he says he will be `working like a donkey’, as usual. Gina Fielding, who is the partnership development manager with The Forget-MeNot Children’s Hospice in Huddersfield will be enjoying a few days away from work over the Christmas period. “I’ll be recharging my batteries and enjoying time with the family,’’ she said. Gina and her extensive family all get together on Christmas Day to enjoy a traditional festive lunch.
“At the moment I think there will be 36 of us getting together. It’s not as bad as it sounds as we divide out the food preparation and all bring something for each course. Most of us are local to Huddersfield but there are a few travelling from out of the area. “We are a very close family and keep in touch all year but it’s always nice to get everyone together at Christmas.’’ This year estate agent Niki Lunn will be enjoying a traditional Christmas lunch with her husband Andrew, followed by a big family get together on Boxing Day.
Niki, who works at Simon Blyth estate agent’s Kirkburton office, says now her three children are all grown up, she enjoys some time with her husband on Christmas Day. She said: “I’ll be having a few days off work as well so am looking forward to a nice restful Christmas Day. Andrew always cooks our meal on Christmas Day so I can put my feet up a bit and enjoy opening my presents.’’ Niki has worked in the industry since 1988 and worked for Simon Blyth agents for the last three years.
