All the fun of the panto OH yes, it is ... that time of year again when we all enjoy family shows and the annual pantomime. WITH festive fun, yule-time mayhem and Christmas buffoonery upon us once more, it can only mean one thing – the arrival of panto season. No Christmas is complete without a family trip to the theatre, whether for some good natured ritual booing of baddies or an afternoon of mulled wine and carols. And this year the region looks to have outshone itself once again, boasting a phenomenal line-up of pantomimes, shows and comedy throughout the whole of December and January alike. A fantastic combination of sing-a-long-songs, dance, laugh-out-loud comedy and true love, the British pantomime is in now an undeniab l y e s s e n t i a l p a r t o f Christmas, with many families and adults eagerly antic i p at i n g t h e i r a n nu a l excursion to the panto each year. Typically aimed at children, panto tells the magical story of our favourite fairy tales or folk lore including classics such as Cinderella, Aladdin, Dick Whittington and Snow White to name but a few, and is often a child's first experience of live theatre – not to mention one they'll never forget. Originally believed to date back to the Middle Ages, pantos boast a fascinating history and over the years have adapted to include many different aspects of theatre from around the world. Today however, they have become an incredibly popular Christmas accompaniment – and with many productions featuring stars from TV past and present, it can also be a great opportunity to see your favourite actors in action. You don’t have to visit one of the larger theatres for high quality productions and entertainment either. Many smaller theatres,
The traditional festive pantomime continues to go from strength to strength with the old favourites like Snow White and Cinderella still being as popular as ever. It’s always a great treat for the family at Christmas or New Year to enjoy a trip to the local or regional production.
amateur dramatic societies and community groups put on first class productions over Christmas, and offer brilliant value for money. What’s more, this tradition of a trip to the theatre, has now extended with many other shows too, and if you fancy seeing something different, Christmas is a great time to catch some brilliant performances. From all-singing, all-dancing stage productions boasting lavish sets and glamour, to top stand-up comedians and music acts or even dramatic plays, there are theatre tickets out there with your name on! So for an unforgettable night out
guaranteed to get you in that holiday mood, book your seats for panto today! This year the LBT in Huddersfield has something for everyone at Christmas including an annual show for children. This year the choice is The Gruffalo’s Child, following the adventures of a daughter who ignores her father’s warning one wild and windy night and goes out into the snowy, deep, dark wood. This is a treat for all the family.

Disco Party Night
WITH the countdown to Christmas 2008 well underway, now is the time to make sure you have all your festive fun organised. You can never start planning too early and this is certainly true when it comes to organising going out over the festive period. Whether you are planning a huge family reunion or an intimate gathering of close family and friends, it is best to start as soon as possible as all the good venues tend to get booked up early. First of all, have a think about what kind of event you are planning. Know your audience and make sure that the
party is appropriate to the people attending. Your idea of a great night out might be a wild night of clubbing but if you are meant to be catering for Great Aunt Maud then something a little more sedate might be a better idea. Next, do your research. Check out as many potential venues as you can and where possible, visit them in person to get a feel for the atmosphere and the service. If you are wanting food to be provided then make sure you do a taste test so you know the food is up to scratch and to your taste.
Discuss party arrangements with the venue of your choice and make sure that it is clear what is being provided. Is the venue providing food? If so, for how many people? Is there any entertainment on offer? How should the evening be paid for? These are all important details you need to get ironed out so you can make an informed choice and make the right decision about the perfect venue for you. Having established where you are having your event, make sure you let everyone know in plenty of time where and when it is being held and keep the venue

informed about numbers as you go along. It is worth contacting the venue a few days before the party to confirm numbers and to make sure that everything is on track for the evening. Finally, having organised the party in plenty of time, you can sit back, relax and look forward to an evening to remem-
ber! Christmas party dos and don'ts: Do give yourself enough time to plan the party properly – booking a venue as early as possible is the best idea. Do stick to your budget and remember that unless you are generously paying for the whole event yourself, you have to take into account other peoples' budgets too.

Do ask around before booking anything and know your audience. You might really fancy a curry for a change but everyone else might be expecting something more traditional. Do take a camera to preserve the evening for posterity and to make sure you get to take maximum credit for the event's success! Don't leave it too late to let everyone know the arrangements for the event and to help things run even more smoothly, it might be worth helping people out with travel to and from the event. Don't get too drunk – you want to be able to remember the event you have organised.

Look good this Christmas
Season to be merry
WHILST the traditional Christmas lunch is usually enjoyed at home with family or friends, the lead up to the festivities and the long holiday – which most of us enjoy between Christmas and New Year – provide us with a great chance to get out and about. Once dubbed as having the second worst food in Europe by the French Prime Minister Jacques Chirac, Britain has since climbed to the top of the gastronomic food tree. Now home to some of the best restaurants in the world Britain is certainly no loser, and Huddersfield is certainly no exception. Turkey finds its way on to most menus at Christmas, but if you’re all ‘turkeyed’ out, then this year try something different. Gone are the days when Britain was once famed for its bland 'meat and two veg' – modern day Britain is more likely to be recognised for its multicultural rich tapestry of communities and

food on offer. Never before has the saying 'it's a small world' been truer and Huddersfield is a prime example. From exotic Thai tastes like green and red curry, fiery Indian dishes not for the faint hearted, gut-busting American treats from the southern states to New York, delicious cuisine from the heart of Italy or the mouth-watering far east of the Orient, the choice on offer is endless. The essential ingredient for a happy Yuletide is time spent with friends and family. When this is mixed with good food and wine and sprinkled with a generous helping of laughter – you are guaranteed the recipe for a great night out.

FOR all those party animals out there, Christmas is an exciting time of year as there are more parties in one month than in the whole of the previous year put together. If you like to work hard and party even harder, then you need to make sure that your wardrobe is up to the challenge. The key is to create a wardrobe that is versatile enough to take you from the office to all those parties without too much effort and planning. You want to be able to concentrate on going out and having fun and not spending hours getting changed in the office loos. Fortunately, autumn/winter 2008 fashion is perfectly geared towards making the transition from formal to glamorous, seamlessly and stylishly. If you invest in a few signature pieces then not only will your wardrobe be sorted for this year but if you buy carefully and stick to classic styles, then you should be able to wear the clothes for many years to come. Start with a good quality winter coat. Go for something classic and it will take you through many seasons in the future. For something a little different from the traditional black or grey wool coat why not go for tartan? This year’s big trend, tartan still manages to retain its timeless appeal and as long as you opt for something quite muted, should be around for quite a while yet. The beauty of opting for a statement coat is that you can get away with wearing something quite simple underneath. Think little black dress for the ultimate in style. You can wear this on its own during the day whilst you are at work and then transform it for an evening out with the addition of some sparkly jewellery, a glamorous clutch bag and a pair of killer heels. Another great trend for this season is leather trousers. A word of caution though – it is important to get the right fit so they flatter your shape – remember you are trying to achieve a Kate Moss supermodel look not the Ozzy Osbourne ageing rocker look.

Arranging a Christmas Party, ball or prom?
SHE WANTS YOU TO SPEND MORE TIME WITH HER
YOU WANT MORE TIME FOR FRIENDS AND BEER,
Again, this is a look which can be worn during the day with a smart white shirt but can be completely overhauled for a night of partying by teaming the leather trousers with a sparkly vest top and a fake fur stole. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different styles. For example, invest in a good quality prom dress which will stand the test of time, and you will get a lot of office wear out of it worn with a pair of chunky tights and ballet pumps. But at the same time, throw a fitted leather jacket on top of it and replace the pumps with a pair of stilettos, and you have the perfect look for a night on the town. You also need to think about your accessories and jewellery to take you through winter and the festive party season. Also think about buying jewellery as a Christmas gift for a loved one. The local area has some great quality jewellers which offer a good choice of items to suit all styles and all budgets. By combining fashion and jewellery together well, you really can look strictly gorgeous this Christmas and New Year!

Keep the family peace this Christmas IN theory Christmas should a time of love and peace, but in reality we all know that old family grudges and sibling rivalries die hard, so if you’re dreading that annual family party here’s our essential survival guide. If you’re brave soul who’s decided to host this year’s festivities, the first step is to recognise your limits and remember that you’re not attempting to prepare the house for a Royal visit or feed the 5,000. Your family will understand that Christmas is a busy time, so put down the scrubbing brush and swap home-made specialities for easy to prepare finger food dishes, sandwiches, large bowls of salad and pre-packaged buffet food. As for drink, it’s best to get a good selection of both alcoholic and soft beverages to keep everyone happy and no Christmas drinks cabinet is complete without a bottle or two of red and white wine, a crate of beer, selection of spirits and some soft drinks. If money or time is tight, you could even ask each guest to bring a particular dish or a bottle of wine of some beer with them. A ‘norm’ for most modern day
parties, no one will thank badly of you and it’s a great way to help spread the cost and work between the family. As for entertainment, think about the age of your guests and try to tailor it accordingly. For instance, a classic board game or Christmas film never goes amiss with those with young children or older family members who may pop in during the afternoon. Or, if you’re planning on making it an all-nighter, simply switch on the stereo and let loose to your favourite Christmas hits. Lastly, if you’re a guest at a family party this year, remember to be considerate. Bear in mind that whoever is hosting the party has probably gone to a lot of effort when all they want to do is sit on the sofa and relax – so thank them for their hard work and see what you can do to help. All in all – just remember why you’re getting together in the first place and enjoy spending some quality time with your family. Try and make Christmas a happy and enjoyable time for all.
