Plan your wedding day down to the smalllest detail

ONGRATULATIONS! You are engaged to be married. After throwing the best engagement party ever, now is the time to get your wedding hat on and plan, plan, plan your big day to the very last detail.

As with anything, your wedding can be as expensive, or as cheap – as you choose. First, decide on where you would like your wedding ceremony to take place. This will depend on whether you and your partner want a religious ceremony, or a civil one. Then, you will need to set the date. Remember too, the most popular wedding venues can get booked up years in advance; so don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

Next, compile a guest list. Once you have a total number of people you would like to invite, both to the ceremony and the evening party, you will know how many your budget must cater for. To give your guests as much notice as possible, consider sending out ‘save the date’ cards well before the official invitations hit the doormat. That way, you will maximise attendance. Planning a wedding offers a unique chance to express yourselves as a couple, so, why not flex those creative muscles? After all, part of the pleasure is in the planning. A colour theme, the reception menu, flowers, table decorations, entertainment and the like, will all provide you with fodder to impress your

closest family and friends on the happiest day of your life. Deciding on a dream destination, and booking your honeymoon is another thing you can do early; many of the best deals are to be had from advance bookings. Although traditionally a task for the groom, many couples prefer to settle the matter of ‘where to go’ between them. Choosing the dress should take into account the time of year of the wedding, the location (home, or away?) and the overall feel of the event. Again, shopping around early is not only more fun, it will enable the bride-to-be to get a handle on exactly what’s out there. And, let’s face it, unless you happen on the perfect gown straight away, selecting a dress that suits your personality takes time. Wedding makeup and hair are other elements to consider, early on. Experimenting with professionals who are well seasoned in the art of wedding beauty will ensure the bride looks her absolute best. Vow to get in shape and eat healthily, too!

Key trends for 2012 are predicted to include two-tiered skirts, exposed underlay fabric and sleek lace sleeves, as well as sheer necklines made from delicate veil-like fabric. Colour has also made its way onto the catwalks with subtle pops of pink and blush becoming 'the' shade for fashion-conscious brides. Tips for making a speech S

PEECHESare a part of a wedding reception that everyone looks forward to apart from the people who have to make them, that is!

Their aim is to perform an entertaining speech, a roller-coaster ride of sentiment and witty one-liners that will have the guests glued to their seats. But standing up and making a speech in front of a crowded room isn't as easy as it looks. So if your knees are knocking at the thought of making your wedding speech, read on. With a few wise words and and top tips from Mitch Murray, one of Britain's best speechwriters and author of One-Liners for Wedding Speeches, we'll help you create an oratorical masterpiece - there won't be a dry eye in the house! Traditionally, the father-of-the-bride, will kick-start the speeches by welcoming the guests and thanking them for coming to share the happy occasion. Father should express how proud he is of his daughter. His speech needs to be sincere with some tender, loving words about his little girl, however, he doesn't ■ CAR: As best man, you can also have a hand in decking up the car want the guests reaching for the sick bucket. ■ WEDDING: The key to any good reception speech is preparation and try not to let your nerves show

TOP TIPS ● Have a drink for Dutch courage but not too many, if you get too drunk you'll only start to slur and sway. ● Drink plenty of water - nerves can make your mouth dry up and you can use the glass as a prop while speaking. Suggests Mitch, "After you it 'em with a one-liner, take a drink while they're laughing...after a while, you'll find the crowd will begin to co-operate with you by stretching out their laughs until you've finished drinking." ● Don't rush your speech. Says Mitch, "Rushing into the next line too early is a sign you are losing your nerve." ● Use normal language - don't try to be clever and cram lots of big words in just be yourself. ● Don't read out your speech it sounds too contrived - try to learn your speech and take a piece of paper will cue words to remind you of what comes next. Write them in different colours so they stand out and you can remember your place. ● Practise your speech so it comes natural too you. ● Speak loudly, clearly and with confidence.

THE RING

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Consult your local jeweller about your choice of wedding ring

■ SYMBOL: More than anything else, your wedding rings are a sign of the union between a couple which should hopefully last a lifetime

U

NLIKE a bridal gown, which is usually worn just once and spends the rest of its days gathering dust in the attic, a wedding ring must endure a lifetime and beyond - often becoming a treasured family heirloom passed from one generation to the next.

■ RINGS: All of the above wedding rings are from a selection of designs now available at Huddersfield’s JPB Jewellery in Half Moon Street

Investing in a wedding ring is a big step but surprisingly many people often leave it until the 11th hour to choose their bands. The best advice is to put the wedding rings at the top of your list always listen to advice from a high quality respected jewellers. Designing your own wedding ring is increasingly popular as couples personalise their jewellery to make it more meaningful. As a result, many people are turning to professional jewellers for help. Skilled craftsmen are able to blend traditional techniques with the latest laser technology to create a dazzling range of jewellery including engagement and wedding rings. When creating a ring from scratch, the first thing to consider is what metal to use. Recently, the lighter shades of white gold and platinum have been fashionable as well as titanium which is stylish grey in colour. It is lighter than gold but just as hard-wearing

as platinum with the added bonus of being less expensive. Classic round bands are always elegant but there are other profiles to choose from. You could go for a ring which is round on the inside and flat on top - known as a comfort fit - or a ring which is concave in the middle of the band. Increasingly popular are stone set wedding rings which are big news right now. A contemporary look is a plain band studded with inset diamonds. Lots of people these days opt for one band which doubles as both the engagement ring and wedding ring. Diamonds are a good choice because they are the most durable but people do opt for other stones. A new fashion emerging is rings containing coloured diamonds and the coloured diamonds really stand out against white metals. An important factor in designing a wedding ring is to make sure it complements the engagement ring. Anything goes with regard to colours but they need to fit together. A good jeweller should be able to match any rings no matter how complicated. Rather than buying a ready made ring, ask your jeweller to create something really special. All the rings featured (left) are from JPB Jewellery of Huddersfield.

LEEP easy sisters, and confine the saying ‘always the bridesmaid, and never the bride’ to history.

Because the latest bridesmaids’ looks have never, ever, been so completely and utterly fabulous as now. If you are a bride-to-be attempting to lure that tomboy of a best friend or puffball-phobe relative into Being Your Bridesmaid, fear not: put these beauties on the table, sit back, and prepare to let the transformation from ‘no way’ to ‘OMG’, begin. Because the latest offerings for summer 2012 bridesmaids’ wear are stunning creations embracing cocktail styles and contemporary detailing she will be able to wear at myriad occasions, long after your confetti has faded. Offering a modern look that is fresh air, in terms of fashion, designers have gone to town in a wonderfully restrained way, with light airy fabrics overlaying simple silhouettes; strategically placed ruffles, and textured flowers – all of which amounts to a very young look that is sexy but classy. Gone are the dull-as-ditchwater styles that were the stuff of nightmares for maids of honour. Rather, the latest bridesmaids’ wear is what dreams are made of. The cocktail dress makes the most of leggy fillies hot to trot. In fabrics that move easily from the aisle to the dance floor, this style is

bang on trend, and first past the post for glamorous evening dos. Naturally, these modern fashions look amazing in the wedding album, too. The real beauty of the cocktail bridesmaid dress is that your bridesmaids don’t have to be racehorse thin to wear them. More ample shapes can look equally gorgeous, when worn with foundation undergarments – the power of which should never be underestimated. Also good news, is that bigger busts are admirably accommodated in the corset styles that have crossed over from bridal gown fashion. In short, bridesmaids’ fashion is just plain sexy this season. Whether it be cheeky cap sleeves, ruffle detail tumbling from the shoulder, or elegant pleating at the bust, the devil is in the detail. Full-length styles are following the lead of their contemporary cousins, with the emphasis on glamour and understated yet dynamic detail elevating them way above the likes of the boring bridesmaids dresses of old. Whether your chosen looks are long, short, sensual or understated, they will all have that modern, sophisticated and chic feel about them in 2012 and for many a season to come. Brides should always remember to involve her bridesmaids in dress choices.

A GREAT VENUE

Holdsworth House, a great wedding venue

A

S perhaps the second most important wedding decision after the dress - finding the right wedding venue is key.

There are a few tips that can help keep that all-important decision stress free. Wedding coordinator Claire Nicholl, at award-winning wedding venue Holdsworth House Hotel in Halifax, gives us her top five suggestions. First consider how many guests you want to invite. A great venue should help you find the perfect room for your size of wedding and tell you what size of party will work best in which room. At Holdsworth House we have four historic function rooms for smaller family gatherings right up to larger parties of 120 guests. To create a great buzz you want a venue that keeps everyone together - with a bar, cloakrooms and seating areas in one dedicated space. Does the venue provide you a great value package?

As well as checking if the venue has a marriage license, find out what little extras they include. Holdsworth House offers free parking, wifi and a welcome glass of wine on arrival. We’re lucky to have 39 rooms, which means that most guests don’t have far to travel at the end of the night. Our inclusive Pain Free wedding packages show that you really can get everything you need for a great price. So many brides get bamboozled with wedding costs when everything is individually priced. Our most popular wedding packages include drinks, room hire, a four course wedding breakfast, a DJ, canapes, evening buffet and much more. What’s more we have onsite beauty therapists fully trained in the latest make-up and bridal hair styles so everything really is taken care of.

■ VENUE: Holdsworth House (above) and the hotel’s wedding co-ordinator Claire Nicholl ready to organise your special day romantic civil partnership earlier this year. Find a team that will the team go the extra mile for you. In an ideal world your wedding day will go without a hitch. But what happens if something unpredictable happens?

We were really put to the test last year when Jamie Oliver and his TV crew descended us for a week to film Jamie’s Great Britain in the grounds. We had a wedding on at the time as well, but everything went smoothly and we even successfully orchestrated a meeting between our very excited bride and Mr Oliver himself. We

were thrilled to subsequently have the restaurant personally recommend by Jamie Oliver on his app as a ‘hidden gem’. Holdsworth House is opening its doors on Sunday July 8 for brides and grooms to view the property from 12 noon until 4pm. Register to attend on their website and you might win an afternoon tea for two.

Make The Venue your number one choice

Does the venue have a proven track record? A great reputation isn’t earned overnight. Your wedding day is so important, that you need to be confident the venue can handle anything you throw at them. Although Holdsworth House dates back to 1633, it has been independently owned as a hotel since 1963 so we’ve had nearly 50 years of weddings – each one totally unique. Plus we’ve just been upgraded to a four star hotel, the first in Halifax. As if that’s not enough, we have been shortlisted as a finalist in the 2012 White Rose Awards for Small Hotel if the Year and nominated in this year’s North of England Wedding Awards. Have other Brides and Grooms recommended it? Tripadvisor remains a popular way of finding out if a hotel is up to scratch. But there are other ways of finding reviews; wedding website Hitched.co.uk is a good one. Ask the venue what percentage of their bookings come from recommendation (rather than good marketing) and look to see how a venue responds to its Tripadvisor reviews. Holdsworth House has held the top spot on Tripadvisor for Halifax for a long time and we’re also 15th out of 662 hotels in Yorkshire, but our favourite recent recommendation was a feature in Hello! for an incredibly stylish and

Difficult task of choosing the venue

■ CHOICE: Wedding cakes available in all shapes, sizes and colours

L

ET’S face it; settling down is kind of a big deal in anyone’s life, so, choosing a venue in which to celebrate the fact is not to be taken lightly.

Apart from the obvious sentimental value of your chosen contenders, consider too their photogenic qualities. Whether you crave the aristocratic surroundings of a country pile, complete with acres of landscaped grounds overlooked by ancient oaks, or your favourite local pub, your choice of wedding venue should reflect your personality and the tone of your wedding ceremony. Of course, unless you are getting married in a church, your wedding reception will, more likely than not, be held in the same location in which your civil ceremony is being held. This scenario has the advantage of everyone being on-site; so no worries about your guests getting lost, en route to the reception. Many a grand wedding is held in a country hotel. The beauty of these is that most boast in-house spas, complete with all the beauty treatments under the sun to make you feel every inch the radiant bride. Spas also provide the opportunity to relax with your bridesmaids, mum and mother-in-law, in luxury surroundings, before the main event sweeps everyone off their feet. A word to the wise. When choosing your wedding venue, be sure to get your digits on a costings up front. What’s more, request a complete breakdown of everything, so you know where your cash is headed. Remember the story of the groom who had to cough up £12 for the knife to cut his wedding cake! So, when we say ‘everything’, we mean just that. Another factor to consider when choosing your wedding venue, is the Great British weather (ugh!).

■ TABLE: Fit for the bride and groom, a perfect setting for the wedding breakfast no doubt, the photographs in the brochure will have been taken during optimum conditions (ie on a glorious, sunny day, when life is beautiful, all the time). However, not wishing to rain on your parade but the wet stuff does have a horrid habit of falling from the sky when you least want it. So, enquire about alternative locations for your photo shoot, such as an ornate glass house or arbour, where you will stay dry, regardless of the cats and dogs situation from above. It’s certainly worth a thought. If you are completely paranoid about the weather here in Blighty, then fly south and choose your wedding venue overseas. Here, white sands and turquoise seas are virtually guaranteed. The only problem with this choice, of course, is that you might have to restrict the number of guests as it can be very expensive for everyone to travel. Although some people choose to marry overseas, many have a blessing back at home and a small gathering for friends and family. This is one way to make sure everyone joins in the celebrations and is ideal for those who don’t want o ■ GUESTS: All gather round for the cutting of the wedding cake at the reception travel overseas for whatever reason.

So much to organise for your big day

AND DON’T FORGET.......

Y

OU’VE set the date, chosen your venue and decided on your wedding gown - but there is so much more to think about.

Although your priority is always to set the date of your wedding day, there’s loads more to organise in the run-up to the big day. You need to decide what to do about photography, flowers, transport, invitations, wedding cake, number of guests etc. When you’re thinking about transport, think whether you want a traditional wedding car or do you want to be different and opt for a horse and carriage or even a wedding bus. Vintage cars are always popular with brides and grooms who want to arrive in style.
