Record year for Huddersfield New College

Huddersfield New College is situated in a 30 acre greenfield site with views over the foot hills of the Pennines. This relaxing campus location plays host to over 2,300 16-18 year olds studying courses at foundation, intermediate and advanced level. The college is the only one in Kirklees that allows students to combine both academic and vocational study. The college is currently celebrating record A level results, having achieved a 99% pass rate for the previous academic year. This comes on the back of an Ofsted inspection in November 2011 which saw the college officially rated as “good with outstanding features.

Always moving forward, Huddersfield New College invested significantly in its facilities over the summer. As well as refurbishing the library and guidance centre, work has recently finished on a suite of state of the art Science labs and a 3G astro turf pitch. A new sports barn is also under development too. The college is also hosting its first ever Saturday open morning on 10th November from 10am to 1pm, so why not come along and see for yourself why Huddersfield New College is in the top 8% of all schools and colleges nationally for student performance at advanced level. Newsome is a happy learning school where students exceed their potential. In recent years, Newsome high school has, as described by a year 11 student, gone from “Zero to Hero” and has established itself as a successful and ambitious institution. A relentless drive and absolute focus on outstanding standards in teaching and learning underpinned by a positive ethos of the happy learning school has transformed the school. Popularity has grown and a trust has reappeared within the parent community and as a result the school is seeing a rapid and consistent increase in school numbers into year 7 and from midterm transfers. It is seen as the “lighthouse of the community” and recent evidence has even suggested that the school has directly impacted on a reduced crime rate within the local community. Local residents regularly contact school to say that they have seen massive improvements and how well behaved and well mannered the students are.

The students recognise and are grateful that there has been significant investment into the learning environment including a TV studio, a sound Recording studio, a reading room and new dining rooms and toilets, to name but a few. All subject areas are now in zones so as to create individual identities and make movement around the building easy and effective for both staff and students. As a Sports College, facilities for sporting excellence are second to none. Calm, well ordered learning environments allow teachers to teach, all students to learn and everyone to exceed their potential. Visitors comment on a daily basis about the wonderful” feel” of the school and many have said that they did not know there were schools like this.

An excellent school at the heart of the community Royds Hall is a successful and very popular high school catering for approximately 850 students aged 11 – 16. We are a Cooperative Trust school and our community benefits through excellent links with our trust partners, The Science Centre at Sheffield Hallam University, Huddersfield New College, Huddersfield Town Football Club and Holmfirth Fair Traders Association.

We are delighted to have: • Happy, confident and aspirational students who express a real pride in their school • Expert staff in all areas with a passion for learning and a determination to ensure all students maximise their potential

• Excellent partnerships between students, staff, parents, governors and community

Our school community is enriched by its diversity. We have over 30 countries and 27 languages represented in school and we take great pride in our role at the heart of our local community.

UP, up and away! - Royds Hall High School recently launched over 800 balloons into the air, each one with a tag about different student’s aspirations. The event was all part of the school’s 90th anniversary year and to celebrate the olympic summer. The balloons were in the school colours of yellow, teal and turquoise. The school would like to hear from anyone who finds a balloon, as there is a prize for the balloon which has travelled the greatest distance.

Students at Royds Hall High School have sky high hopes.

We welcome visits to the school – our students are our best ambassadors for their school and would be delighted to join me in showing you round the school. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any query as the well-being and achievement of our students is of the utmost importance to us.

In September 2011, Ofsted recognised our achievements, finding us to be a good school with a significant number of features, including our care, guidance and support for students, judged to be outstanding. They also highlighted our well-established trend of improvement and mutually respectful relationships between students and teachers which results in confident learners who make ‘remarkable progress’.

Olympic reading challenge A group of students have took part in the school’s Olympic Reading Challenge. Students read 5, 10 or 15 books, completing a project on each one to receive their bronze, silver or gold medal. The challenge began earlier in the year and students have worked extremely hard to gain their medals. The gold medal involved making a board game, a book sandwich and even planning a party based on the books they had read. Some of the students who took part are pictured below.

Growing and sustainable living These are exciting times for Colne Valley Specialist Arts College. In June we learned that we were among the top 10% of schools nationally for our improved performance in recent years. In August our Year 11 class of 2012 achieved the best results in the school’s history, a huge cause for celebration for our entire community. As we continue to deliver a high quality education to the community of the Colne Valley, we are also developing our curriculum to reflect the rural heritage of the school. In the past, the school was renowned for its pioneering farm. Our “Growing and sustainable living” course is the latest addition to the Colne Valley curriculum and is an academically rigorous 21st century slant on rural and horticultural studies. The course has been developed and delivered by local tutor Steve Smith, drawing on contacts with community and environmental groups in the valley and with Huddersfield University.

This nationally accredited course encourages students of all abilities to consider key issues affecting them locally and globally and provides progression routes to college and university. Not only do students learn how to grow and sell organic produce but they will be taught how to consider sustainable food production by reducing the miles involved in transporting food. “The course is closely linked to the context and heritage of the Valley. For example, students recently did a walk which concluded with a reading of some of his poetry in Marsden Mechanics by Simon Armitage (an ex-student of the school), Professor of poetry at The University of Sheffield” Colne Valley students also made excellent use of the developing links with Huddersfield University on Soil Laboratory Day when they joined undergraduates in analysing soil samples from the school growing areas and from around the valley.

Drawing the right conclusions? Ofsted report suggests more needs to be done to help children develop their artistic side SOMETHING needs to be done to encourage our children’s creativity, according to a recent Ofsted report. ‘Making a mark: art, craft and design 2008-2011’ looked at art, craft and design education in schools and colleges, and found that after getting off to a confident early start, pupils’ progress slowed during primary school and was ‘no better than satisfactory’ at the start of secondary school. It suggests that weaknesses in the teaching of drawing have not been addressed since Ofsted’s last report. Too few pupils developed creativity through confident drawing and limited provision for teachers’ professional development meant that less than a quarter of teachers surveyed participated in subject-

specific training in the year before their inspection. Only two out of five primary schools and three out of five secondary schools were said to have provided ‘good’ or ‘better’ education in art, craft and design, the main short coming with the remainder being inconsistency in provision. The report added that opportunities available out of school, such as visits to art galleries, are not made clear enough to pupils, parents and carers. It recommends that these opportunities and other good practice should be accessible to all. Ofsted director of education, Jean Humphrys, said: “Children’s ability to appreciate and interpret what they observe, communicate what they think and feel, or make what they

imagine and invent, is influenced by the quality of their art, craft and design education. “We found that children often began well, drawing adventurously and imaginatively at the very start of their education, but too few made consistently good enough progress to flourish creatively, especially boys. “I would like to see teachers getting better access to professional development. I want schools to build on pupils’ experiences and creative development in their early years more effectively in primary and secondary school.” In the schools’ defence, the quality of the curriculum had improved since Ofsted’s previous survey. The schools inspected for the report typically had broadened curriculum provision to promote greater inclusion. The best work inspectors saw in schools and colleges was characterised by a breadth of drawing media used for a range

of purposes such as recording, experimenting, analysing, and developing ideas. They found that good skills in drawing, a fundamental subject skill, underpinned good achievement in later secondary school and post-16 education. Read the report for yourself at www.ofsted.gov.uk

Four schools united by a common ethos Making the right choice of school is a major decision for any parent or carer. We all want our children to be happy, secure and to thrive in a supportive, caring environment. However, we also expect that they will be challenged academically and will develop confidence as they work to achieve their goals. Netherhall Learning Campus consists of four schools, covering the full age and ability range from 3 – 19 years, each with its own distinctive ethos; each with its own individual identity and each catering to the specific needs of its students.

Whilst the four schools are linked by a common philosophy and by common expectations, the High school and Creative and Media school retain their own particular characteristics. From Year 7 onwards, pupils follow a range of learning pathways, tailored to meet their individual need. The schools aim to provide students with as wide a range of options as possible to adequately prepare them for training, further and higher education and the challenges of life beyond the school gates. The standard of teaching has been consistently rated ‘good’ or better in successive OfSTED inspections.

Among Kirklees schools, only Netherhall Learning Campus offers children and young adults with a continuous journey from Early Years entry through Key Stages 1 to 4 and beyond to Diploma, AS and A level studies, via the Studio School. Pupils may join any of the schools at any time. Regardless of the stage at which they start to attend, all students will experience the unique benefit of an education that has been planned by specialist teachers for all stages of a child’s learning journey.

This means that there is: • A common standard and expectation of dress, behaviour and standards of presentation • High quality teaching • Innovative curriculum development • A stimulating and attractive working environment • A recognition of the importance of parents and carers as partners in the learning journey of our children.

‘’

At Netherhall Learning Campus we are dedicated to unlocking the potential of all our students. That’s why our motto is ‘Success for all’ Joan Young, Principal

Academy well placed to meet each new challenge With the secondary education system facing a period of significant change over the next few years, Castle Hall Academy in Mirfield is confident that its “Curriculum with Integrity” leaves it well-placed to meet students’ future needs and aspirations. Principal Andy Pugh said, “We are expecting major changes to the qualifications and examinations system. At Castle Hall, our students follow mainly academic GCSE courses. As a specialist in modern foreign languages, we are equipping students to offer vital skills for employers. “Our score on the new English Baccalaureate measure for the number of students gaining a grade A* to C in 5 key subjects, is impressive, and this offers students the widest choice of post-16 and university options when they leave.’’

Our first year as an Academy has brought the exciting news of additional funding to make improvements to our buildings. In June, the Department for Education allocated almost £500,000 for refurbishment of our main teaching block. This is the most significant external investment for many years, and the work should be completed by spring 2013.” The extra funds from government have also allowed us to plan substantial upgrades to our IT network and further building programmes in the year ahead. These are exciting times indeed for everyone at Castle Hall Academy. Parents and their children can visit us during our Open Evening on Thursday October 11 between 6pm and 9pm.

Exam results are obviously of vital importance, but parents also need to know that their child will be well looked after, and given the appropriate guidance to help their learning and future career. Our pastoral team is committed to ensuring the welfare and safeguarding of students.

In return, we provide a highly innovative range of courses; outstanding teaching; superb advice, guidance and support; and extensive extra-curricular programmes, including our Debate Society,

Excellence Is Our Language

Shaping Lives To make the most of College life we expect our students will work extremely hard; develop independence; undertake new challenges and actively contribute to a vibrant, exciting and friendly learning environment. We are immensely proud of our outstanding students and we actively promote them as ambassadors in the local and global community.

The Governors and Principal are pleased to invite you to an Open Evening

Amnesty International Group, musical ensembles and the Cultural visit to Berlin. Each year students embark on a prestigious World Challenge expedition, most recently helping to build a school in Madagascar. These fantastic opportunities immeasurably enrich our students and help foster a lifelong love of learning. We believe that students who have a full and diverse range of experiences develop the skills to organise their lives. Consequently they are happier, more charitable and ultimately more successful.

Outstanding Progress to University The College is part of the Cambridge University Higher Education Plus programme which provides extension activities for students intending to apply for highly competitive courses. This year, students have progressed onto a wide range of University degrees including Sport and Exercise Studies at Durham; German and Philosophy at King’s College, London; Language and Linguistics at York; Law at Leeds; Nursing at Huddersfield and Dance at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. Our UCAS support programme which includes University visits to Newcastle, Northumbria, Liverpool and Oxford has been instrumental in ensuring all our students who apply to university have been successful in gaining places on their chosen courses.

TUITION AND ENRICHMENT Kip McGrath Education Centres

Discover the joy of music and performance

Kip McGrath Education centres provide high quality, professional tuition in all areas of maths and English, including reading, spelling, and writing.

Founded in February 2000, Oscars Theatre Academy is the brain child of two extraordinary and dedicated people, Miss Paula Danholm and Miss Emmy Wilde.

Scotland, Rose Bruford’s and LIPA. Some are already performing on stage and screen. The courses are part time and run complimentary to main stream education. Private lessons are also available.

Both Paula and Emmy are professional artists who together wished to provide an environment for young people to discover the joy of music and performance they themselves have experienced over the years.

The academy aims to provide a friendly, family environment where students are taught to help each other to individual and common success but above all to have fun and enjoy the exciting world of the performing arts!

A recipe for success! We teach children from the age of 5 - 16. Many students lack confidence in their ability. Our tutoring system ensures success. Once a child feels successful, their eagerness to learn grows and academic achievement rises. We have some wonderful success stories, from children making great strides in National Curriculum levels and achieving great results in GCSE exams, to those sitting and passing 11+ Entrance exams.

The majority of our students come to us from recommendations from schools, friends and relatives. Many of our centres are now Ofsted registered which provides peace of mind to parents and carers as well as affording parents the opportunity to use childcare vouchers at the registered centres thereby considerably reducing tuition costs. We pride ourselves on providing a positive and successful learning environment at an affordable and very competitive price.

Prior to tuition an assessment of the child’s abilities is carried out which allows us to determine the child’s strengths and those areas in which help and support may be needed. An individual programme is then devised which works on the areas causing difficulty while promoting their areas of strength. Our tutors are all fully qualified and experienced teachers with a wealth of knowledge of the education system and learning processes.

Oscars strives to encourage young people to discover and fulfil their untapped potential or develop their existing skills to a professional level. Oscars students have already performed to great acclaim at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the celebrated London Palladium, Broadway, and national television. Students have gained places at major UK Drama schools including Central School, Royal Conservatoire of
