AREN’T you forgetting something? It’s time to get your Christmas planned out! With the seasonal celebrations knocking on the front door, it can be a stressful period for all. But, as with most things, a little planning goes a long way towards taking the Yuletide strain. So, first things first, get a pen and paper out, grab your tablet or smartphone, or switch on your PC, and start making some notes. It’s a smart idea to make a list of everything you will need for Christmas, and then allocate a date that it needs to be sorted out by. A timetable like this should help you to keep on top of things and limit any stressful rushing around nearer to December 25th. So, firstly, make sure you order the bird! Whether you’re having turkey, goose, gammon, whatever – it makes life much easier to put an order in for all the meat you need in advance from your local butcher. Then, all you need to do is pick it up a few days before Christmas – no last minute rushing around the supermarket grabbing any frozen turkeys they have left! You could potentially do the same with your grocery shopping. Many local businesses will deliver advance Christmas orders, but if that’s not an option, make a list that you keep with you and pick up some Christmas items when you do your weekly shop. Work out the bits you can pick up in advance that will keep, and then leave the fresh items until closer to Christmas. Another important list you’ll need

is for all the gifts you’re planning to buy.

meals with friends and family? If so, get that done pronto.

One good tip is to compare prices online, in order to see the sorts of prices you should be paying. Then, when you hit the shops, you’ll know if you’re getting a good deal and you’ll know the best places to pick up what you need.

If you break everything down like this then you’ll find the Christmas period is much less frantic and a lot more enjoyable.

Budget carefully, make your list and stick to it. It’s the best way to make sure you’re not hit with a nasty credit card bill after Christmas. One thing people always tend to leave until the last minute is writing and sending their Christmas cards.

Take the stress out of Christmas with some forward planning. You never know, with a few things ticked off here and there, you might even find time to put your feet up with a glass of wine and enjoy some top Christmas telly!

Best to get it sorted earlier and the Christmas cards might be cheaper to buy too. Make a comprehensive list of everyone you need to send a card to. Go through it and check that you have all the surnames and names of partners and children correct. Ring up friends to check, if you’re not sure. Same goes for the home addresses too. And, if you are planning to send cards or gifts overseas, you’ll need to know the last postal dates before Christmas. Go now and check if your Christmas tree lights all work. Best to find out now than when it comes to hanging them up. Other things you could get sorted include hair and beauty appointments. Also, do you have to book any pre-Christmas

6 Christmas 2013

WITH the countdown to Christmas 2013 well underway, now is the time to make sure you have all your festive fun organised. Make sure this Christmas is one to remember by organising some extra special festive fun for friends and family. With a bit of time and a lot of imagination there is so much to do over Christmas that you’ll be spoilt for choice. The key is to organise something which is appropriate to the people involved – for example, a night of clubbing might not be the best idea if you are planning a family reunion with elderly relatives and, likewise, a tea dance would not be popular if you are organising a wild work night out. Have a think about what kind of event you are planning – do people want a sit-down meal, or would a buffet be a better idea? Are people expecting entertainment such as a DJ? If it is a family get-together then do you need somewhere quieter where people can talk and properly catch up? And if it is an office party, then would karaoke be a good idea to really get the party going? This is where doing your research really comes into its own. The internet is invaluable for finding out what’s going on where, and you can’t beat good old-fashioned footwork, when you can visit places, pick up menus and flyers and really get a feel for the atmosphere of potential venues. If you want something a bit different from the usual evening

of a meal and drinks, then how about a night at the races or an evening at the local casino? Maybe a good old-fashioned show at the theatre? Or why not take advantage of late-night shopping and combine an evening of retail therapy with a bite to eat and a few drinks? Before you get too carried away with ideas, think about your budget for the evening. Christmas is a notoriously expensive time of year anyway, without you going completely over the top and planning an event which costs a small fortune. Take into account what people can afford and plan accordingly. There are lots of offers on in the run-up to Christmas, so if you are willing to do your homework then you should be able to find something reasonable within budget. Most restaurants offer a set menu for a set price over the festive period, which is great because everyone then knows what they need to spend for the whole evening. A kitty is often a good idea too, whereby everyone contributes a set amount at the beginning of the evening and all the drinks are then paid for out of it. So all you have to worry about is your taxi fare home! Crack open the bubbly and make this a Christmas to remember! For some families this Christmas could be the first one for newer additions to your brood.

FOR some families this Christmas could be the first one for newer additions to your brood. As your baby’s first Christmas approaches it’s easy to get excited, but what do you buy your little one at this special time? Obviously it all depends how old your baby is, if he/she will only be a couple of months old at Christmas then the choice of gifts will be very different than if they’ll be 11 months’ old. It’s important to think how they’re going to grow and use the toys, it’s great to get them a couple of things that they can play with straight away but also think about what they’ll want to use in six months time. Finding toys that challenge them and encourage your little one to explore and discover new sounds and colours are ideal, after all they’re constantly leaning new things. Even from only a few months old, reading books with your baby is a great way for them hear your voice, as well as to see new shapes and colours, and then, as they get older, numbers and letters, so books are a great gift to buy. Some books also have touch and feel sensory pages. Discovering new textures is a big part of a baby’s learning experience.

For newborn babies activity gyms and sensory toys are a good option, things that crinkle, rattle and squeak are all new noises for them to get excited about. Soft teddies that talk and say phrases are a good choice too this helps babies learn to interact, encouraging them to make different sounds, learn new words and begin talking. Also if your bambino is crawling around then it probably won’t be long before they’re trying to walk, so toys that help them to stand and walk are ideal. There are push-along toys, activity tables they can stand at and ride-on toys that are all good fun and great for learning. If you’re looking to buy gifts for someone else’s baby then, as well as toys, keepsake gifts are a lovely option. Silver money boxes, picture frames, photo albums and even vouchers for a photoshoot are all good choices. Maybe even a toddler plate set with matching little spoon and fork will come in handy as they start enjoying solid foods. So no matter what you buy your little bundle of joy this Christmas, they’re sure to love it – probably just as much as the wrapping paper and box!

Eggs Benedict - Ser

LUNCH is, of course, the main event when it comes to food on Christmas Day, but breakfast is a close second. From scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and crispy bacon in soft rolls to pancakes topped with maple syrup, it’s important to keep those energy levels up for the day ahead. Especially, if you’ve got little ones who strongly believe that the festivities begin at 5am....

1. Poach 2 eggs. A great trick, to hold the egg tog ether when cooking, is to pla ce the whole egg (shell on) in sim mering water for 10 seconds, the n place it in cold water until it’s cool enough to touch. 2. Next, crack it op en and place into simmering wa ter and cook for 3 minutes. Ad d a few drops of vinegar to the water too. To assemble 1. Split and toast the English muffins, butter the m and place on a plate. 2. Arrange the ham on top followed by the po ached eggs and a generous hel ping of hollandaise sauce. THE tinsel is up, the presents are under the tree and you’ve made it home in one piece after the office party. Now all you’ve got to worry about is the Christmas lunch. From the cost and time management, to the fact it might all taste terrible, cooking Christmas dinner can be a particularly tense time for any amateur chef. However, most people don’t even try to do it all by themselves. Whether it’s buying in your mincemeat or getting the whole meal out of the freezer section, it’s OK to take advantage of those wonderful supermarket fairies and their magical readymade help at Christmas.

Convenience has moved on. When it comes to ready meals, the run-up to Christmas is very busy as shoppers stock up for Christmas, often buying in items like oven-ready vegetables like red cabbage or buttery mash potato. Canapes such as vol-au-vents and miniature fish and chip cones are best sellers around Christmas, as are pre-prepared turkey breasts stuffed with sausage meat and wrapped in bacon. Interestingly, as more of us buy in festive food, the choice has increased. Supermarkets know that Nigella lovers won’t be impressed with shelves lined with plain old turkeys and have upped their game.

DR Carrie Ruxton, from the Health Supplements Information Service, says: “Christmas is a time of fun and delicious food. But it can also bring expanding waistlines, overindulgence and winter illnesses! However, with a bit of planning, the festive season can be a time to remember rather than a huge guilt trip. My tips are:

• Alternate between low calorie soft drinks (e.g. sparkling water, juices, diet sodas) and alcoholic drinks. This will halve your potential alcohol intake and help prevent a hangover. • Get your immune system ready for winter by taking a daily multivitamin. Additional vitamin D (5-25 micrograms daily) is also vital if you’re not a fan of oily fish. • Turkey is a healthy meat but

consider updating the traditional Christmas accompaniments by serving steamed vegetables, mashed potato (using milk or low fat spread) and a light gravy. • If a roast isn’t for you, try a superfood option such as beef stir fry or grilled tuna steaks. • Eat slowly to avoid gorging and take a small portion – you can always have seconds if you really are still hungry”.

• Eat a small, healthy meal before heading out to parties. This will take the edge off your hunger and avoid a famished nosedive into the buffet.

CHOOSING the right wine to serve alongside Christmas diner, the most important meal of the year, can be a difficult task. For the uninitiated, pairing wine and food is an impossible task, factor in the bewildering array of wine available and the pressure to get it right for such an important occasion, not to mention trying to find something which appeals to all your relatives, and it’s easy to see why many of us don’t know where to begin. Champagne is always a welcome start to the day. This is a celebration, after all, and opting for some fizz for predinner drinks is a great way to start the day in style.

Gin is also enjoying something of a resurgence of late, and a classic gin and tonic is a perfect apperitif, while a quality cognac makes for a good post-dinner drink and aids digestion. When it comes to choosing a wine to accompany your main, the options are endless. But whatever wine you plump for, the wine should enhance the flavours of the meal and not overpower it. A full-bodied, creamy white with citrus notes, like a white burgundy, or a refreshing, crisp Pinot Noir, both work well with turkey. An aromatic rich red, such as a Chianti or a Rioja, have enough tannin and flavour to work well with game. While a lush, fruity Malbec or Bordeux has enough warmth and depth of flavour for roast beef.

Champagne Veuve Monsigny by Philizot & Fils NV, £12.99, from Aldi Toro Loco Tempranillo, £3.69, from Aldi HINTS of white pepper complement the fruity flavours of strawberry, black cherries and redcurrants in this rich Spanish red, which has powerful silky tannins. Made entirely from Tempranillo grapes, this is a great match to red meat or dishes with a hint or two of spice.

12 Christmas 2013

PRICED at just £12.99, this bargain bottle offers an intense nose of baked apple, brioche and stone fruits with gorgeous flavours of apples, red fruit and minerality on the palate. Familyowned, Champagne Philizot and Fils, who make the Champagne for Aldi, are based near Epernay in Reuil and use a combination of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes to make this awardwinning fizz.

Adding a few drops of whatever wine you’re drinking to your gravy or accompanying sauce, will also help the flavours of the wine and Christmas dinner to marry and complement one another. And, if you’re still unsure – visit a local wine store where you’ll not only find a huge array of wines, but expert advice to help you choose the right ones to accompany your festive feast. Here are a few corking ideas for Christmas day drinks, from wines to Champagne, port, after dinner drinks and more...

Baron Amarillo Rioja Reserva, £6.29, from Aldi AGED for three years in oak barrels, this Spanish Rioja Reserva has a lush, rich taste with hints of blackcurrant and cherry. Perfectly balanced with fine vanilla and oak spices adding complexity, warmth and intrigue, this award-winning wine is particularly good with red meat.

Blackberry and Gin Fizz, £4.99 from M&S FOR a refreshing alternative to Champagne or prosecco, try this Blackberry and Gin Fizz, £4.99 for 75cl, from Marks & Spencer

Martin Miller’s Gin, RRP £26, available from Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Ocado A CLASSIC gin and tonic makes a refreshing alternative to a sparkling wine as an apperitif. For a perfect G&T every time, premium gin maker, Martin Miller’s Gin says it must be ice cold – so keep your gin in the freezer, use plenty of ice and serve in a large balloon-style glass so the drink doesn’t get warm while you hold it. For the perfect finish, garnish with a long-twist of lime peel and a few juniper berries.

The Audrey Spencer School of Dance Tickets from £8

Traditionally, the panto time of year, there’s plenty going on at theatres across West Yorkshire including right here in Huddersfield, at the popular Lawrence Batley Theatre. This year the LBT is staging Rapunzel, a show suitable for children over three and their families. The show runs from Monday December 9 to Sunday December 29. Bookings are now being taken. Olivier award-winning writer Mike Kenny re-tells this much loved fairy tale with an inventive

and witty script. Performed with live music and magical design, the show is staged in-the-round in the main auditorium. Get your ticket now and let you hair down this Christmas with a visit to the LBT. Suitable and entertaining for all ages, Rapunzel is the perfect festive outing. Various matinee performances are available. As well as pantomimes, there will be lots of other festive shows and concerts all over the area. Look for brass band concerts and carol services in Huddersfield and surrounding villages.

BEFORE and after the Christmas festivities, there’s still time to get out and about with the family and see what the local area has to offer. Nearby attractions include Eureka! at Halifax, a great place for children any time of year, and the National Coal Mining Museum for England, equally fascinating for all ages. Take a look at what both have to offer this time of year: What if spring never sprung? What if summer never blossomed? What if autumn

never fell? If Jack Frost gets his way you’ll soon find out! Every weekend and holiday between November 30 and January 5, visitors to Eureka! can enjoy a brand new interactive show Jack Frost and the Winter Fairy. Can you help the Winter Fairy convince Jack that all the seasons are important so he doesn’t make it winter all year round? The show is suitable for children aged three to eight years old, and is included in the standard admission/ annual pass. Meanwhile Santa and his elves will be flying into Eureka! to catch up with children and give them a small gift on weekends and holidays between

November 30 and December 23, and afternoons December 3 to 19 There will be a £3 additional charge. Whether you have been naughty or nice, you are amazing! You can find out why in the brand new gallery All About Me where you can explore the human body through over a hundred interactive exhibits. A trip to the National Coal Mining Museum for England never fails to impress and at this time of year there’s plenty going on and festive fun is guaranteed. Younger visitors will enjoy visiting Santa in his underground grotto or why not

adopt a pony this Christmas and help the museum look after the former pit ponies now happily living above ground in stables at the museum. On Thursday and Friday December 19 and 20, why not enjoy a visit to the museum’s Pocket Panto which will feature the story of Dick Whittington? Various Christmas tea and panto packages are now available. To find out more, take a look at the Christmas leaflet on the website: www.ncm.org.uk

THINK of a Christmas buffet and you’re more than likely conjuring up images of turkey curry, sausage rolls and, dare we say it, cheese and pineapple cocktail stick ‘hedgehogs’. But Christmas party food doesn’t have to be dull. Nor does it have to be timeconsuming and costly. A good buffet needs a wide array of flavours, hot and cold dishes, so that there is something to suit all your guests’ tastes. That doesn’t mean you have to cook every single thing on the table though. After all, you want to enjoy the party too. So, when you’re planning your party food, choose a combination of dishes that you can make in advance, as

well as no cook items, such as an antipasti platter laden with olives, cured meats and sundried tomatoes, and no fuss items like ready-prepared canapes. A whole baked Camembert is another simple but impressive no fuss option – simply stick the cheese in the oven until it goes gooey then serve, in the box, with crusty baguette on the side, what could be easier? Likewise, antipasti platters are a simple but delicious way to make your buffet a bit more gourmet. Simply buy a few packets of Parma ham, chorizo, salami, olives, Manchego cheese, sundried tomatoes and the like, open packets, arrange on a serving platter or board and voila, a no-cook dish that looks impressive but requires zero effort.

CHRISTMAS tells a tale of vamps, grunge, and glamour when it comes to fashion this year. One of the most eclectic catwalk collections that we’ve seen in recent years, this autumn/winter the designers have well and truly let their imaginations run wild. The classic female silhouette is one of the most popular trends and focuses on understated beauty. Inspired by the likes of Hollywood greats like Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor, it’s all about nipped in waists, soft rounded shoulders and hems that fall just below the knee. Perfect for wowing at Christmas parties. Black leather, in contrast, is another firm favourite. With the ability to make anyone look that little bit cooler, you can expect to see it everywhere this season. During the day incorporate the trend with a chic leather t-shirt, and by night turn it up a notch with a vampish dress or skirt. The sassy style is also being given a Gothic-twist teamed with lace. In terms of colours, the shops are awash with dove greys, deep Merlot reds and striking cobalt blues, as well pretty pastel pinks. A real love or hate shade, pink is being tipped as ‘the new black’ this season and is an instant way to update your wardrobe. In addition, the popularity of all things 90s remains en vogue. Think tartan dresses, chubby coats, crushed velvet, sport/ utility wear and skirts layered with jumpers that give a nod to grunge.

Plus, the swinging 60s are being favoured by many designers, with short, coquettish sleeveless shift dresses working well for both the office and post-work cocktail parties. Likewise, floral patterns, typically associated with spring, are positively blooming this Christmas and offer an easy way to brighten up wardrobes in darker months. Warm shades like burnt oranges, dark reds, navy and mauve work particularly well. Those looking to dazzle will also be pleased to hear that sequins are back in full force for the festive season. From glistening mini skirts to sultry scoop back dresses, this party must have isn’t just for Strictly Come Dancing. As for every day essentials, skinny jeans reign supreme with cashmere sweaters, a chambray denim shirt, brightly coloured blazer, and cosy knitted sweater dress all basics for your autumn winter wardrobe. And last but not least, size really does matter when it comes to outerwear this season with no outfit’s complete without a big coat. From a classic camel coloured oversized blazer to a faux fur ¾ length coat, these little beauties are ideal for our chilly climes and will ensure you stay snug and look stylish. Whatever trend you opt for, there are styles to flatter every figure and style this Christmas.

Christmas 2013

THIS Christmas there are a host of gorgeous hair trends that will guarantee you look perfect for any party. And, if you’re already planning how to have your hair, read on for the latest styles! Big, bouncy curls are still one of the most popular party looks, with loose tumbling locks and glamorous curls inspired by old-school Hollywood starlets leading the way. Textured, boho waves are also en vogue, and this season, look great worn with a centre parting or teamed with thick, feminine, fringes. Wet-look hair is another key trend, with rafts of designers flaunting semi-dry hair on the catwalk. To create the style at home, roughly blow dry hair and either smooth into a side parting or slick-back with a gel. Next, tuck hair behind your ears and straighten the lower half. You can either wear loose around your shoulders, slung in a low ponytail or scraped back into a wet-look chignon. If you prefer having your hair up, however, indulge your inner 60s-siren with a sultry beehive with a few tousled strands

left loose at the front. Or, opt for pinning up waves into soft rosettes at the back of the head. Likewise, those who favour more natural styles can opt for a loose, side braid or sweep up into a sleek, high ponytail with movement at the end to make it bouncy. Not only are both styles right on trend, but they’re also weather proof - perfect for blustery winter days! Make sure you keep on top of any appointments with your hairdressers too. The winter weather can play havoc with even the most well-behaved tresses, so book in to have a trim or your colour touched up well in advance. A good intensive-conditioning treatment to nourish dry hair is also an excellent investment at this time of year, and be sure to book any appointments for hair ups or blow dries for parties now. There’s nothing like the feeling of stepping into salon with windswept, dull hair and walking out feeling pampered, preened and beautifully polished! So, with a little bit of planning (and generous spritz of hairspray), you can have glossy, gorgeous hair this Christmas.

ONCE the laughing stock of the fashion world, novelty jumpers are now a style must-have. Spotted on everyone from Cheryl Cole and Alexa Chung to Justin Bieber and Harry Styles, the stores are once again filling up with festive knitwear. The key to picking a good novelty jumper is remembering that it needs to be over the top. It is, essentially, the clothing equivalent of screaming ‘I LOVE CHRISTMAS’ at the top of your voice. In essence - it’s go big or go home. Some of the most popular styles this year include snowmen, reindeer, Father Christmas, elves, and polar bears, as well as candy canes, penguins and Christmas trees. Bright primary colours are favoured by most

shops, and the bigger the pattern or picture, the better. Take a trip to the high street, or have a look online and in charity stores for genuine vintage festive knits that have added kitsch appeal. If you can’t quite bring yourself to wear an over-sized Christmas pudding though, opt for a trendy Nordic fairisle pattern instead. Cool, stylish and festive without being too ‘in your face’, these little beauties look great for winter walks, trips to the pub or visiting the family. Be it on a jumper, scarf, hat or leggings, taking a leaf out of our Scandinavian neighbours book and stay snug while looking stylish. So if you haven’t invested in one of these woolly wonders yet, this is the year to do it.

NO Christmas is complete without making your home look and feel festive. With the addition of some tasteful accessories, you can transform a dull and tired looking room into a winter wonderland in time for all those guests popping in over the festive period. You want a home to be proud of so it is worth investing in a few classic pieces which you can use year after year to ensure your home is looking suitably Christmassy. You could try a particular colour or theme. Traditional Christmas colours tend to be green and red, or you could go for some

sparkle with a silver or gold theme, or something cool and sophisticated like white. You really don’t have to spend a fortune if you just use your imagination to bring your theme together. From a welcoming wreath on the front door, to sparkly baubles hanging from the mantelpiece, it is the little touches that make all the difference. You don’t have to go completely over the top (unless you want to of course!) and make your home look like Blackpool Illuminations. Just a few simple accessories can still glam up your home in time for Christmas so use your imagination and let’s make Christmas 2013 the best one yet.

WHILE you’re preparing to deck up your house for the festive season, think about any guests you may be hosting over the Christmas period. Is your house guest ready? Don’t be tempted to concentrate on decorating your main living areas, only to neglect any guest accommodation and bedrooms. If you have guests travelling from a distance to help celebrate the season, then it’s only natural they will want to stay overnight and spend a few days with you. Although it’s lovely to have a house full of visitors at Christmas to spend time with,

they do need their own space to escape the festive chaos for a little while. If you’re preparing a guest bedroom, then make sure you have plenty of hanging space for your guests to leave their clothes when they unpack. One way to create extra space is to hang a valet rail or hooks over the door and provide plenty of coat hangers for their festive outfits. This is an ideal remedy for guests if wardrobe space is limited. If you’re struggling for space, then a fold-out guest bed may be the answer. Lots of options are available to buy in local shops or on the internet.

Guests who are staying for a few days will need plenty of towels for showering and bathing. It’s always a good idea to invest in a freestanding towel rail for the guest room so they have plenty of room to dry towels. The last thing your guests need is to wonder what to do with their wet towels. Make sure, as well, that your bathroom is well stocked with bubble bath, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and other bathroom essentials. Your guests may bring their own toiletries but make sure you are well stocked, just in case. In the main living areas of your house, make sure there is enough seating for all your guests. You might find you need

to bring out the `emergency chairs’ on the big day itself to cater for everyone. If you’re short of space, invest in a contemporary nest of tables so there is plenty of room for guests to put down their drinks and nibbles. The last thing you want is glasses left on the floor and wine spilt on your lounge carpet. Always make sure you have plenty of coasters available so guests can put their glasses down with leaving ring marks on your furniture. With Christmas fast approaching, now is the time to make sure you are organised and ready to receive your festive visitors

FROM oversized baubles and metallic pink tinsel to sprout wreaths, you’ll find sack-loads of contemporary decorations filling the stores this Christmas. An increasingly popular option, the shelves are brimming with quirky decorations that offer a great alternative to traditional adornments. This year, one of the key contemporary trends is a rainbow like palette of bright lime greens, royal purples, hot pinks and sky blues that create a dazzling effect. Inspired by the fashion designers’ love of colour blocking this season, the look is bold and visually appealing with glitter, and shiny metallics in abundance. Not a look for the faint-hearted! Contemporary decorations aren’t just about decking the halls with bright, bold colours though – they can be used to create a chic, understated look. For instance, opt for soft colours like baby pink, cream, mint green and duck egg blue with an off-white tree for an almost

celestial touch. Or choose deep teal, emerald green and gold decorations to achieve a luxurious, yet dramatic effect. Striking cobalt blues with white and silver also create a sophisticated design - as do black with mustard yellow golds, and bronzes. Be clever and substitute traditional decorations for a modern alternative too. For example, swap your green garland wound around the staircase bannister for a neon pink paper version; take down the candle arch in your window and hang a group of delicate over-sized snowflakes from the ceiling; or replace the angel on top of your tree for a glittery, neon star. THERE’S nothing quite like walking into your house on a cold, crisp December morning and smelling the delicate, pine aroma of a real Christmas tree. It’s a smell that fills you with anticipation for the

celebration ahead and evokes childhood memories of Christmases past as you crept downstairs to see if Santa had been. Real Christmas trees come in various forms, with popular types including the Norway spruce – generally four foot high and is often regarded as the most traditional tree because of its strong Chrismassy smell; Blue Spruce trees, which have distinctive blue-tinged needles; Scot’s pine trees and lodgepole pine trees, which have soft foliage, hold needles well and have a sharp fragrance; and the fir tree (both the noble fir and nordmann fir varieties), which holds needles very well and has a distinctive broad appearance. Another festive foliage option for those who like real trees but don’t have the room for a full size tree is a potted mini Christmas tree or a

potted bay tree, which are now widely available in many garden centres. Perfect for those who live in apartments or to use to spruce up your front doorstep, these trees are lovely when used alone or in addition to a larger traditional tree in your lounge.

freshest tree possible. Buying direct from the grower is a good way to ensure freshness and quality. To check how fresh a tree is, run your fingers down one of the branches – if the needles stay fast, it’s fresh, if they fall off, choose another tree.

Whatever style, shape and size of tree you prefer, there are a wealth of real tree options available, but one thing they all have in common is a short lifespan if you don’t look after them well.

Once you get the tree home, before bringing the tree indoors be sure to saw an inch off the bottom of the trunk. This helps the tree to drink water – thereby retaining its needles for longer – as a fresh cut opens up the pores in the bark, which otherwise can block up with sap after being initially cut to sell.

Don’t care for your tree and not only will you be sweeping up pine needles every day – you’ll be finding them under furniture for months. Many people solve this problem for opting for an artificial tree, but for many an artificial tree just doesn’t cut it. So, what’s the solution for real tree lovers? Well, first thing’s first, make sure you need to buy the

Think about where you are going to position your tree in your home. It will last longer if you don’t expose it to sudden changes in temperature and don’t let it get too hot. So make sure you don’t place it near any radiators, as heat will cause the tree to dry out and lose its needles. Use a specially designed Christmas tree stand which can contain water to stand your tree up indoors – and always keep the water topped up. A tree can drink as much as two to three pints of water a day, depending on its size and your central heating settings. So, to keep it nourished, healthy looking and retaining its needles, make sure it always has water – and never stand the tree in soil or sand, as this can block the pores and prevent it from being to absorb water. And, when it comes to disposing of a real tree, either visit your local recycling centre or contact your local council, as many councils offer a special collection service during the festive season which will recycle the trees into compost or wood.

THIS Christmas, make sure you visit Byram Arcade, Huddersfield’s architectural gem. Great for shopping all year round, it’s particularly special at this time of year and ideal for picking up a festive bargain or two. Full of independent retailers, it is a refreshing change from the normal High Street and is a great place to browse in Victorian splendour and enjoy a coffee or a lunch while you’re out and about. Various events are coming up at Byram Arcade in the coming weeks including a vintage fair on Saturday November 30. Here you’ll find a selection of vintage stalls and re-worked vintage, as well as a retro sweet stalls. Look out too for the annual Festival of Light which comes to Huddersfield in the approach to Christmas. Byram Arcade is one of the

only indoor venues for the Festival of Light, which takes over the whole of Huddersfield town centre each December. This year the event takes place over the weekend of Friday to Sunday, December 6 to 8. Inside the arcade you’ll find street theatre performances and late night shopping. For details visit www.huddersfieldlightfest. co.uk The three-storey arcade is a great example of Victorian architecture which has been extensively refurbished in recent years by Kirklees Council. Byram Arcade was built in 1880 and 1881 by the architect W H Atkinson. It was acquired by the former Huddersfield Corporation in 1920 and refurbished by Kirklees over a period of several years. Much of the paintwork was kept to colours more in keeping with the age of the arcade.

WITH the number of shopping days left until Christmas rapidly dwindling, if you haven’t started shopping for presents for the kids then you need to get a move on.

present for children and woe betide if you don’t buy it before stocks run out completely.

Kids always know exactly what they want – there are no half measures – so if you can’t find a present which fits their precise requirements then expect tears and tantrums on Christmas Day!

Interestingly in these days of hi-tech gaming, traditional board games seem to be making something of a comeback.

Hence the need to start shopping early. Each year there seems to be a different ‘in’

In recent years lengthy queues are clearly visible at most toy stores throughout the country as people fight – literally in some cases! – to make sure they don’t miss out.

Try and avoid any huge disappointments on Christmas Day by getting your children to write a list of their favourite toys,

but make sure you warn them that they won’t get everything on the list! This will give you a bit more choice and you are more likely to get most of what your children want for Christmas.

It may be hard work but it is worth the effort when you see the look on your child’s face on Christmas Day when they get the present they really want.

ON the approach to Marsh is the Trinity Street area of Huddersfield which is itself a busy little shopping area. With various shops along its length, it is busy with motorists in and out of Huddersfield, on their way to the M62 and also to the popular Greenhead Park which has recently been refurbished. The park is a great place for families whatever time of year

Following the refurbishments, the park’s conservatory now houses a restaurant and there is plenty to keep children entertained with a playground and tennis courts. Next time you’re in the park, take a look at the shops in Trinity Street while you’re there. You might pick up a bargain.

THERE’S going to be a Victorian style Christmas in Meltham this year. On Saturday December 7 villagers will celebrate Christmas with a gala and lights switch-on starting at 1pm. A Victorian Christmas market will be held in St Bartholomew’s Church Hall which will include craft stalls, mulled wine, a hog roast, entertainment, Punch & Judy and a Santa’s Grotto for younger visitors. At 2pm outside the village’s Cafe 33, there will be a Santa Dash and Elf Stomp. Both parents and children are welcome to take part. Later at 4.30pm the village

Christmas lights will be switched-on by Huddersfield Giants’ star Eorl Crabtree who will also start the Santa dash. The winner of a children’s picture competition will also help with the lights switch-on and this will be followed by carols in the church. The day after, on Sunday December 8, villagers are invited to join in with Carols in the Park at 4pm in Meltham’s Robert Ashton Memorial Park. Go along and capture the spirit of Christmas.

THERE’S lots going on in the villages of the Holme Valley this Christmas and especially so in Holmfirth itself. Although the main celebrations are in Holmfirth, other villages have smaller events in schools and churches and quite often have their own Christmas tree in the centre. Every year the town of Holmfirth celebrates the festive season with a big Christmas Lights switch-on event, often with a firework display to finish. This year the big switch-on will be on Saturday November 23 when crowds will gather to enjoy the various events and Christmas lights finale.

Make A Town Fan’s Christmas!

CHRISTMAS is all about the kids so when it comes to looking their best on Christmas Day this tends to take priority over everything. Never mind if you are there on Christmas morning in your scruffy old onesie – as long as the children look suitably festive, that’s the main thing. And with this in mind, there are loads of really cute outfits on the high street so you can be sure that the kids will look and feel great over the festive period, and the best thing is they won’t break the bank either.

GETTING the right gifts for the kids at Christmas is the ultimate goal for any parent. Even though you are basically resigning yourself to running around like a headless chicken, queuing for hours and even possible fisticuffs with other parents, seeing their little faces light up with joy on Christmas morning makes it all worthwhile. Every year there is a ‘wish’ list of toys and gifts that no self-respecting parent should be seen without and this year is no exception. According to Britain’s biggest toy and babycare retailer,

Children are becoming more fashion conscious than ever so the pressure is on to ensure they not only have a new outfit in time for Christmas but that it is fashionable enough for them to agree to wear it. Kids are the toughest judges of all and won’t wear anything they don’t like but don’t worry - there are so many great looks to choose from for the little ones that you’ll be spoilt for choice. From cute and cuddly, to pink and fluffy, and from cool and street tough to sparkly and glam, it’s all covered so what are you waiting for? And you might even have enough time and enough money left in the bank to get yourself an outfit as well...

Toys R Us, action and role play toys are set to be the favourites this year with flying faires, ghoulish dolls and technology-led pets also featuring high in the popularity stakes. Mike Coogan is marketing and ecommerce director at Toys R Us and he said: “This year’s outstanding line-up once again demonstrates the knowledge and versatility we have within our industry and the ability to adapt and respond to everchanging markets, whether it be popular role play and action toys, or technology and virtual world gaming platforms, which are entering households at a phenomenal rate.”

IF there’s one thing that should be on everyone’s wish list this Christmas – it’s a book. A great gift for any age, there’s nothing like curling up on the sofa to read the latest page-turner or climbing into bed with your little ones to read them a classic fairytale. For adults, the bookcharts this year are filled with a cracking selection of crime, romance, horror and thrillers from top authors like Terry Pratchet, Ian Rankin, Martina Cole, Cecilia Ahern, and Jenny Colgan. Or, just some autobiographies out include those by Alex Ferguson, Suggs, Katie Price, John Bishop, Mo Farah and Jennifer

68 Christmas 2013

Saunders. Be it fiction or nonfiction, many of the biggest book releases are made in time for the festive season so you’ll never be short of ideas. Likewise, there are a wonderful assortment of books to accompany TV programmes and films - great for avid fans. Perhaps, for instance, your mum never misses an episode of Downtown Abbey and would love to read about what goes on behind the scenes? Or maybe your husband enjoyed Game of Thrones and wants to read the original books? If so, a hardback companion book or a boxset of novels could be the ideal gift. Cook books are also a great gift idea for budding Paul Hollywoods or Delia Smiths,

and there is a larder-full of exciting new titles out this Christmas. The same goes for books about things like knitting, cake decorating, fishing, gardening and other hobbies – not to mention art, and history.

about their favourite pop band, or a new release by an author like Diary of a Wimpy Kid’s Jeff Kinney, The Vampire Diaries’ L J Smith and Ravenwood’s Mia James, there’s a huge selection to choose between.

As for kids, you’ll find a wonderful assortment of enchanting books designed to fire up their imagination! From festive classics like The Night Before Christmas and The Snowman, to more modern favourites like The Jolly Christmas Postman, The Tiger That Came to Tea, The Gruffalo and pretty much anything by Roald Dahl – a good book is a sure fire winner.

Books don’t have to cost a lot either. Why not check out local carboot sales, charity shops and second-hand book stores to see what you can pick up? Or if you’re still not sure what to get, you could always buy a voucher from their local bookstore or download a book for their e-reader.

When it comes to older children you’ll also discover all manner of great gifts. Be it an annual

Whoever you’re buying for, books really are the gift that keeps on giving, and will no doubt be a present that’s treasured for years to come.

Most women don’t spend extravagant amounts on underwear for themselves, so a set of luxurious lingerie will be a welcome addition to any stocking this Christmas.

FROM seductive lace sets, to a vintageinspired corset, silk chemises and beautiful balconette bras, lingerie is a timeless gift for the lady you love.

But beware the pitfalls of such a purchase – firstly, check her size. It’s a common mistake for well-intentioned men to buy the wrong bra size for their partner. Some may say buying your wife a bra three sizes too big is wishful thinking, others that they failed to do their homework. So, before you hit the shops, take a

nosey at the label on one of her existing bras. Secondly, to be sure that she will wear your gift, choose something in a similar style to the underwear that she already wears. There’s no point in splashing out on a racy and exuberantly expensive set if she won’t feel comfortable wearing it. As a general rule of thumb, lingerie that is both sexy and sophisticated, in a luxurious fabric such as silk or lace, is always a safe bet. And, if you really aren’t sure of their bra size, or the style of lingerie they would prefer, play it safe and opt for a beautiful silk chemise or a luxurious silk gown.

WITH a recent survey finding that 66% of us Brits spend more on their pets than their partners at Christmas, it seems our four-legged friends will be in for a treat this year! From rabbits and guinea pigs to cats and dogs, Britain is a nation of pet lovers and we (quite rightly!) want to spoil them as much as the humans in our lives. Luckily the shops are filled with a purr-fect selection of gifts that are sure to make them feel part of the festive celebrations. If you’re shopping for your pooch, there is a wonderful array of squeaky toys, tug ropes, and cute festive jumpers to fill up their stocking. Or, if the canine in your life is on the clever side, how about a stimulating IQ puzzle or toy? Think plastic footballs that release treats when they’re moved around, agility obstacles

that you can use in the garden, or instruction books that you can use to teach them new tricks - perfect for budding Pudseys!

Edible presents also go down well and you can buy all manner of chewy sticks, flavoured bones and dog-friendly chocolate guaranteed to get their tail wagging. Cats are equally spoilt for choice with an exciting selection of fancy feline presents to choose between. Some of the most popular gifts this year include crinkle tunnels, and massage mats, as well as heated soft toys. Alternatively, you may want to buy your four legged friend something practical like a new food bowl, lead, collar or bed? If so, Christmas is a great time to do so. Just imagine how happy they’ll look, for instance, curled up in a ball in front of the fire or snuggled into a hammock on the radiator. The chilly winter weather isn’t just felt by humans!

Speaking of which, perhaps an appointment at your local grooming parlour is also in order? Long haired dogs in particular have a tendency to get rather muddy in the winter months, and a trim could be just what they (and your newly washed floors) need! Of course, no stocking is complete without a cute festive jumper, sparkly red collar or Rudolph headband either! Last but not least, don’t forget about your smaller furry friends. From dragracing exercise balls for hamsters and palatial cages that will give budgies wings, there’s plenty to give them a treat too.

AT one time the typical family scene was mum, dad, two or three children, grandma and grandad along with various aunties, uncles and friends. However today, with marriage breakups and second marriages, things are very different, with the traditional family a thing of the past.

He adds: “Even the most ’perfect’ of families will experience some degree of tension, at extended gatherings like Christmas, so first and foremost, don’t be too hard on yourself and accept that it’s normal to experience teething problems.”

Christmas is a time of joy, but it can also be a huge source of stress for many – especially if your family doesn’t fit the ’traditional’ 2.4 children mould.

On a positive note, 55% of those surveyed by the Centre for Modern Families wished they could spend more time with their family.

However, there are steps to help keep festive feuds low and festive fun high, and planning ahead is a good place to start.

Christmas is a time for families to re-connect and come together, but while this can be merry and joyous, the festivities can also lead to a lot of tension for many families, and feuds can flare up.

Cooper added: “There’s a lot of stress when families meet. But if it’s managed properly, they’ll enjoy being in this extended family.” Some of the most striking research from the Centre for Modern Families centres on people’s attitudes to what constitutes a “proper family”.

Keeping everybody happy can be challenging, and things get even trickier if your family has a complicated or sensitive set-up. If you’re divorced and share custody of the children, or have a step-family and two sets of in-laws, navigating the arrangements for the festive celebrations can pose an emotional minefield. Psychologist Professor Cary Cooper is head of relationship counselling charity Relate and a panel member for the Centre for the Modern Family, which aims to improve understanding of families in the 21st century. He says that only 16% of modern day families in the UK fit the traditional model, defined as two married parents living together with two or more children. Having wed twice himself, with two children from each marriage, Cooper has first-hand experience of

57 per cent of people no longer believe that a couple with children have to be married to be a family. Beyond the subject of marriage, 77% of people believe that single parents can be a proper family; and 59% believe that same sex couples can be a family. tackling complicated family arrangements, but he’s confident that steps can be taken to keep stress to a minimum. According to Cooper, Christmas is stressful because, often, it is one of only two times of the year that the family has to reintegrate emotionally for a substantial period of time. During the rest of the year, family members are only “tactically” connecting.

He said: “A characteristic of the modern family, traditional or otherwise, is they lead a very diverse life and only come together for a longish period of time over Christmas and family holidays. “Now, you’re dumped in a box for 10 days, and that process of reintegrating is stressful because you’re having to tolerate everybody else, whereas before you could just do your own thing.”

However, a significant minority of people disagree with these views indicating a strong polarisation of opinion. A third, 34%, thinks that a couple should be married to be a family. Just under a third, 29% believe that same sex couples are not a proper family, and almost one in five, 17% feel that single parents are not a proper family.

DON’T forget to recycle this Christmas and New Year. When the festive season is in full swing, it’s very easy to forget about more mundane jobs like recycling bottles, boxes etc. At this time of year however, most households have extra rubbish and recycling to get rid of because of food packaging, gifts and entertaining. It’s not just the day to day domestic recycling you need to think about - make sure you recycle all your Christmas cards when you take down your decorations. If you have a real Christmas tree, you will need to take it to a local garden centre or recycling centre to get it mulched up for compost or bark.

THE lead-up to Christmas is generally a very busy and enjoyable time for all. However if you suffer a bereavement of either a friend or family member at this time of year, the death can somehow seem even more traumatic. What should be a joyful time of year can quickly change into a grief-stricken few weeks which casts a dark cloud over all the seasonal festivities. The last thing you feel like doing is going out celebrating or even dashing round the shops to buy food and gifts. To help you through this very difficult time, you need to engage the services of a professional and understanding funeral director who can shoulder the burden and organise the funeral service. A personal recommendation is

usually the best way to choose a funeral director. Often friends or colleagues can recommend a funeral director they have been happy with. After initial discussions to determine funeral arrangements, let the director organise as much as possible including time and date, flowers, transport, music etc. Try not to let the anniversary of a death spoil every Christmas for years to come. If’s always very easy to remember a specific anniversary and let it cast a cloud over your seasonal celebrations.

Christmas is a wonderful time of year - a time for parties and celebration. But for a lot of people, mainly those of us who have to do all the organising for the parties and celebrations, it can also be a time of great worry and stress, At the very time when we should be enjoying ourselves the most, we can find ourselves terribly stressed out because of the long list of festive chores we have to do. In the run-up to Christmas all the running around buying presents, going to parties, buying the Christmas food,

the endless queuing in shops, finding the perfect party dress, as well as overloading ourselves with rich foods and too much drink, can all play havoc with our stress levels. Not to mention the high expectations we all have of the festive season which help to pile on the pressure. For some however, Christmas is not a good time of year and can be a lonely and difficult time. there are organisations which offer help and support and it can be a big help to speak to others for support at this time of year.

Things on your mind? LIFELINE LIFELINE Kirklees offers a range of creative recovery services to people with dependancy issues from alcohol and/ or substances including Mkat and Steroids. The organisation works proactively across Kirklees and with a range of other services offering support including group work, one-to-one psychosocial interventions, outreach and substitute prescribing options.

Services are open access which means you can just walk in off the street, or if you choose you can be referred by a number of other professionals within Kirklees such as your community GP. Lifeline aims to work proactively in partnership with any service that will support eecovery for an individual and has positive links, for example, with housing and other peer led services.

Is something troubling you, then get in touch. We’re here 24 hours a day, 365 days a year Huddersfield Samaritans

NEED TO TALK IF you need to talk, remember there is always a listening ear at the Samaritans organisation. Samaritans was founded 60 years ago, in November 1953, by Prebendary Dr Chad Varah. The idea was seeded after he conducted the funeral of a 14-year -old girl who had taken her own life, after she started menstruating and thought she was gravely ill. Chad vowed at her graveside to devote himself to helping other people overcome the sort of isolation and ignorance that had caused the girl to die in this way. He would do it through a combination of education and the provision of access to

emotional support in times of need. When he was offered charge of the parish of St Stephen Walbrook, London in the summer of 1953, Chad Varah knew that the time was right for him to launch what he called a ‘999 for the suicidal’. A confidential emergency service for people ‘in distress’ was what Chad Varah felt was needed to address the problems he saw around him. He was, in his own words, ‘a man willing to listen, with a base and an emergency telephone’. The first call to the service was made on November 2, 1953 and this date is recognised as Samaritans’ official birthday.

IF you’re out visiting friends and family this Christmas, then you need to make sure your car is in tip top condition. Cold winter days and freezing road conditions spell bad news for vehicles so it’s essential to get your car checked over before the really bad weather starts. Make sure your car has plenty of antifreeze in its system to guard against cold starts and also top up with windscreen wash fluid as winter can be a really dirty time of year. In bad weather conditions, it’s vital to keep a clear windscreen.

Get your local garage to check your car over and pay particular attention to tyres which need to be in good condition to cope with slippery roads and snow. If you’re not sure of what to check, then ask at your local garage. If you’re a regular customer, they’ll be happy to advise. If you’re a new customer, then why not think about engaging the services of your village garage for all your servicing and MOT requirements. With a local garage, you’re a valued customer, and not just a name. Finally keep your eye on the weather forecasts for all

journeys, long or short. Keep a few vital supplies in your boot like a snow shovel, sturdy boots or shoes, a thick coat and a blanket in case you get

stranded. If you’re setting off to visit relatives and the forecast isn’t great, then take something to eat and a hot drink in a flask just in case.

IF you will need a taxi this Christmas or New Year, then you need to book in good time. Local taxi firms do get booked up early at this special time of year as people need transport home from seasonal parties and family gatherings. Where possible double up on taxis so a few of you can cut

the cost of travel if you’re going home in the same direction. It is particularly important to book early if you need a minibus or seven seater taxi as these do get booked up early for groups travelling to and from Christmas events. Don’t leave it until the last minute - or you may find yourself without transport at the end of the evening.

FROM tissue paper, gift bags and boxes to wrapping paper, bottle bags and cellophane - there’s never been so much choice when it comes to presenting our gifts at Christmas.

When it comes to the wrapping itself, this is a task that many of us dread - and if you’re short on time (which let’s face it, who isn’t at Christmas?), there are a few things that you can do to help yourself. Start by setting one day aside to tackle your wrapping, and if you have kids, ask a grandparent or friend to look after the little ones for a few hours so you can get a couple of hours uninterrupted work on theWrapped task in Gift B A G D R E S S I N G G OWN C hand. W A E U

And this year there are a fabulous range of designs and colours filling the shops. Vintage-inspired wrapping paper is one of the most popular looks, with plain brown parcel paper tied with red, gingham or festive ribbon leading the way. Not only is it tough (great for posting), but it also looks stunning with the minimum of effort – perfect!
