How to keep your body in tip-top condition KEEPING active over the age of 50 is a must! Although there are many local gyms in the local area who are delighted to welcome men and women over the age of 50, you don’t have to be a `gym bunny’ to get a little bit fitter. Just half the amount of recommended exercise can cut the risk of serious illness, academics have found. Doing 75 minutes of light exercise - such as a brisk walk - a week can make a “big difference” to people’s health. Professor Conrad Earnest and colleagues at the University of Bath’s department for health studied patients with metabolic syndrome - a combination of medical
disorders that together increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The study was designed and carried out in the United States to examine the minimal threshold for exercise benefits based on public physical activity guidelines. The guidelines, which are very similar to those in the UK, recommend that adults do at least two hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise, such as brisk walking, a week and muscle strengthening for two more days a week. People who took part in the trial were split into groups which were given exercise set at 50%, 100% and 150% of the
recommended guidelines. The study referred to criteria for metabolic syndrome set out in the National Cholesterol Education Programme, including waist circumference and blood pressure, and used an analytical technique developed by researchers at the Cambridge Medical Research Council. The results showed that these metabolic syndrome characteristics were improved in those who did as little as 50% of the guidelines. Prof Earnest said: “Our results show that people can significantly improve their metabolic syndrome risk at just half the dose of current exercise guidelines, showing that even a little really goes a
long way to improving health. “In essence, there’s really no reason not to do something active. “These findings show us that even those who do not enjoy physical activity can still make big differences to their health by doing a small amount.” Exercise is of vital importance to anyone over 50 as it keeps the body strong and supple and helps to maintain a healthy weight. If you prefer the structure of a gym environment, then have a word with your local gym and ask about any offers they have for older members and what type of exercise routine they would recommend for over 50s.
Fat: Do you know the facts? NEW research warns that big bellies are a health timebomb but losing just 4cm off your waist could help you live longer After a long, long winter many of us have an extra roll of flab or two lurking under our jumpers, ones that we're desperate to shift. The trouble is, changes to metabolism as we get older make our bodies much more likely to pile on weight in this area – the dreaded middle-aged spread. Research has shown that a big tummy could also be a killer, even on otherwise slim people. It's widely known that men develop what is often dubbed a beer belly as they get older, and stop burning off calories as efficiently. But a study released this month by Concordia University, USA, found middle-aged women are more likely to develop a spare tyre, thanks to hor-
monal changes, which cause fat to be distributed in a different way. Experts now believe that the fat which forms around the middle is different to that found elsewhere in the body. Abdominal fat is unstable, it wraps itself around your internal organs and releases toxic chemicals. "This puts you at high risk of diabetes, heart disease and stroke," explains Jean Pierre Despres, Scientific Director of the ICCR, an organisation dedicated to tackling the rise in abdominal fat.
Why is abdominal fat deadly? Abdominal or visceral fat is the tissue that forms around the heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas, causing a bulge in the tummy. "It's highly active and constantly pumping poisons into the bloodstream,
which can trigger changes in metabolism," explains David Haslam of The National Obesity Forum. The latest research shows that the chemicals released by tummy fat can raise your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar – seriously increasing your risk of heart attack, diabetes, Alzheimer's, breast and bowel cancer. However, studies have also shown that this deadly visceral fat is the first to disappear as soon as you go on a diet or start exercising a bit more.
How do you measure up? Only 50% of British people know what their waist measures, despite evidence showing that it's actually more important to health than knowing your overall body weight. In fact you can still be abdominally obese, with all the health risks that are attached, even if
you have a normal BMI or "healthy" weight. To measure your waist, find the halfway point between the bottom of your ribs and your hipbone. This is where you should wrap the tape measure around you to give an accurate waist measurement. Visit myhealthywaist.org for more advice.
How big is too big? Your waistline is classed as unhealthy if it is more than 94cm (37) for men and 80cm (31) for women. If your waist falls into the "too big" camp, it's time to trim. But the good news is that researchers have also proved that losing just 4cm (1.6) from your waistline will slash your risk of early death by 60%. Which is an even better incentive to diet than simply slipping back into your favourite jeans

ELCOME to the Examiner’s first ever issue of 50+Living, a supplement which looks at what’s available for the over50s in the local Huddersfield area.
They used to say life begins at 40 but now it seems an increasing number of people are starting to really live their lives at 50 plus - either because of changes in their personal lives or because they simply
feel they have the financial freedom to follow their dreams and aspirations. Often by the age of 50 children will have either flown the nest or are old enough to cope on their own without the full-time attention of mum and dad. Sometimes people over 50 are lucky enough to be able to take early retirement or find they have more time to devote to hobbies and interests, travel, sports etc.

HOME IMPROVEMENT Perhaps it's time to change things to the way YOU want them?
I
S YOUR `nest' feeling a little empty or is your property looking decidedly middle-aged? Then this is a time, after the children have left home, when you can spend a little of your hard earned money on your home. Unfortunately the phrase ‘money, money, money’ automatically springs to mind when you think about investing in your home. Even after the original outlay, there always seems to be an endless amount of work to be done in order to get your house just as you want it. Therefore, it really is crucial to know what areas of home improvement will give you the best return for your hard-earned cash. A good place to start is with the basics; after all there is no point in having a beautifully decorated kitchen if it’s slowly being ruined by the leaky bathroom above it. Central heating and double glazing may be expensive to install, but future
Some time for yourself... at last! purchasers will be encouraged by a property that benefits from these features and, in the longer term, savings will also be made on household heating and electricity bills. But with such big installations such as windows, it is vital you consider the character of your home. It could be, for example, that secondary glazing on the inside of existing windows may be preferable to double glazing for a period home with original features. Make sure any improvements made are in keeping with the character of the property and try to avoid replacing old features with modern ones, such as stained glass windows and original skirting boards. Garages can prove to be most useful, so if you have the space it may be worth considering one. They are not complex to build but can provide valuable car and outside storage space and could even be used as an outdoor workshop or such like.
Similarly, if you have the room, you may be thinking about investing in a conservatory. Conservatories make a fantastic addition to most types of property and are perfect if you require more living space. What’s more, with all the developments in modern technology the type of glass now used by many conservatory manufacturers really does minimize the sound of bad weather so your conservatory can be used come rain or shine. You may also feel pressure to keep up with the neighbours.
If there is one particular feature, such as a second bathroom, that the other properties in your road have but yours lacks, remedying this will prove to be great value for you and your home. Taking care of such problems not only makes sense in terms of resale value, but also will make your living environment more pleasant. But it is not necessarily major improvements that offer the best value for money. Simple improvements, especially to the front of the house, such as a well cared for gardens, potted plants by the porch, and a nicely painted exterior and front door, all contribute to the house’s appeal. Every home is different, so work out what will mean the best value for your own property and crack on with those improvements
"Conservatories make a fantastic addition to most types of property
Don't be depressed by your empty nest... MUMS and dads who are suffering from ‘empty nest syndrome’ are being offered advice from Parentline Plus. Thousands of parents are said to be affected by anxiety and stress when their children head off to university or college – and the charity has put together some top tips to help them cope. Claire Yates, area manager, said: “Parents can start to prepare themselves for the changes ahead and the loss they will feel when their child moves out of the family home for the first time, re-discovering themselves, their relationships, and life after children. “Just because they have moved away, it doesn’t mean they don’t need you, your reassurance and your support.” Call the 24-hour, free Parentline on 0808 800 2222, log onto the charity website www.parentlineplus.org.uk or e-mail parentsupport@parentlineplus Some parents find life really difficult and struggle to cope with `empty nest' syndrome when their children fly the family home, either to go to university or
do when they're gone and think about all those home projects you need to do. Maybe you could create a new guest room from your child's room, or if he or she is only leaving home temporarily, why not freshen it up for their return?
TIME TO REFLECT Now your children have moved on, there's lots to focus on set up home with a partner or on their own. Mothers in particular find it hard to come to terms with the fact that their once tiny baby is now a strapping six footer about to embark on a new life - without her. Everyone told you the years would pass quickly but it's still hard to realise just how fast time has gone.
Coping after the kids There are ways to combat any negative feelings by taking the following steps: 1. Plan ahead - if you know your child is leaving home shortly, then try and get used to the idea gradually in the previous weeks and months. Plan what you will
2. Realise the importance of friends - this is a time when you will need your friends. Seek out those who are experiencing the same feelings as yourself and make sure you have a full diary of social events. 3. Married couples can really enjoy the added freedom that an empty nest gives them. No longer do you have to think about making meals for children or tidying up after them, the time is yours to do what you wish. It's also a time for your own relationship and realising you now have more time together. 4. If you don't work or only work parttime, why not think about doing some volunteer work? Charities are always in need of more helpers so sign up! You may find it enjoy it more than you think.

I will recommend them to anyone looking for a quality job.’’ Rendermeister only uses its own employees so it can keep a very close eye on quality and customer satisfaction. A fantastic top eight finish for Pennine's Craig N
O wonder he’s smiling - Craig Hanson is one of the top window fitters in the UK. His company, Pennine Trade and Retail Windows based in Aspley, has recently been a finalist in the nationwide Master Fitter Challenge. Only the top eight fitters, including Craig, made the finals following a series of tough exams set by the event organisers GQA Qualifications Ltd. Craig competed against seven other finalists in the national competition at the industry trade fair The Fit Show, which took place at the Telford International Centre. “The show is good news for the industry. We've been without an exhibition for years and this one looks like it was a success,’’ says Craig Hanson. “When the show announced the competition we entered straight away. We wanted to show how good we are. So we are pleased to be in the final as
we got the chance to show our skills live at the show. "Being one of only eight finalists means we are one of the top installation companies in the UK.’’ Craig has worked in the industry for 18 years and launched Pennine about five years ago. At the final he had to remove and replace a window, install a door and fit a conservatory roof on a mockup bungalow on stage at the exhibition venue – all against the clock. Craig, whose firm employs 14 people, was nominated to take part in the contest by one of his company’s suppliers. Craig, who has worked on many local homes across Huddersfield, has been manufacturing windows and doors for several years and has recently started to produce both conservatory roofs and coloured composite doors at his Aspley site.

Are you prepared? Don't leave your financial planning until the last minute or it might be too late to enjoy your retirement... ARE you aged fifty or over? Have you made financial provision for your retirement and old age? All too often we read press articles today about the number of people who sadly have not made provision and who are panicking about what the future holds for them. If you’re in the dark about how you will cope after retirement, you need to plan ahead now. According to some independent financial advisors, there is still time to build up a nest egg for your future. If you are planning to work until you are 65, you have time to draw up a retirement plan and set yourself up with a pension plan. One of the best things to do is to consult an independent financial advisor or why not have a word with your local Citizens Advice Bureau? Figures from the CAB indicate that there is a huge demand from the 50-plus age group with enquiries about pensions, 50+LIVING is published by the Huddersfield mortgages, wills and life insurance. Many fiftysomethings should give this
serious thought and contact their employer's pension department and ask about additional voluntary contributions (AVCs). A new system of auto-enrolement started in 2012 which means employers are required to put their staff into a pension. Younger people who have no pension provision have welcomed this as it is a way of saving for the future. Remember there are also personal private pension schemes which are also a good idea and are often used as a back-up to a work pension. If you are in your 50s the chances are that your parents will be getting quite elderly and they often need help with their finances. Age UK has help and advice on paying for residential care, dealing with someone’s estate and arranging power of attorney. Making plans early for elderly parents can save a lot of headaches in the future. The Financial Services Authority has a guide to dealing with bereavement at its advice website. If you’re 50-plus and have not made a will, then this is an area of forward planning which you need to get organised. The main thing to do now is to get organised. At this moment in time, retirement may seem a long way away but like everything else in life, it has a habit of creeping up before you know it.
Workers 'confused' about forward planning WORKERS are not planning for the future and are “confused” about when to start thinking of retiring, according to a new report.. Research by the Institute for Employment Studies showed employees in their early 50s seem to have done little in the way of forward planning. A study of over 50 employees found the recession altered the retirementlandscape “significantly” as redundancies and recruitment freezes led to higher levels of unemployment among the older workers. The report said individuals may no longer be in the driving seat of their
later life and retirement planning. “Not only might older workers potentially be an easy target for companies looking to cut costs, but those losing their jobs cannot afford to take the earlyretirement as they might have done in financially healthier times,” said the report. Marie Strebler, of the Institute for Employment Studies, said: “Employers provide retirement support, however they are failing to encourage people to stay.” The report is a warning to people over 50 to start planning for their retirement and in particular, to think about a pension for the future.

Not sure what to do about your retirement? Ask Eric... Before you make any decisions about your future, get some friendly advice from the professionals TALK IT OVER Let Eric show you the way ahead
HOW can a snail possibly help you with your retirement finances? It sounds unlikely but Eric the snail really can! Did you know, for example, that you can boost the income you receive from your pension annuity by up to 40% just by shopping around? Or that the average amount homeowners raised from their property last year was ÂŁ52,268 using Equity Release? Eric, which is a handy acronym for the Equity Release Information Centre, is a Leeds based retirement solutions specialist, and can help with Equity Release, Pension Annuities and Will Writing.
Pension Annuities If you are aged between 55 and 77 you can convert your pension savings into a regular income which will be paid to you for the rest of your life. This is called a lifetime annuity. An annuity cannot be changed once purchased so it is extremely important that you compare everything on offer for your individual circumstances as it can make a dramatic difference on the income you receive.
Equity Release Equity Release allows you to convert some of the equity in your property to a tax-free cash lump sum, or a regular income, without you having to sell up and move out, and without the need
to make monthly payments. It is an option available to homeowners over the age of 55. It is entirely up to you what you spend the money on, but the most popular items include home improvement, a holiday or to help friends and family.
Your Options There are lots of things to consider when you are planning your retirement finances, such as downsizing, taking in a lodger or using your savings. Equity Release will have implications on the inheritance you leave and it may affect any means-tested benefits you have, so it is important to get sound information about the alternatives available. Equity Release is a lifetime mortgage or home reversion plan, so to understand the features and risks contact Eric for a personalised illustration. Eric is the UKs longest established Equity Release specialist, and takes pride in this position when giving expert, impartial information and a first class level of service. Eric is genuinely independent and concentrates only on retirement products. What are Family Asset Protection Trusts?
"Think of the trust as a ‘safety deposit box’ to keep your assets in'' A LITTLE PLANNING CAN PAY HUGE DIVIDENDS Placing your assets into a family trust should ensure that they pass to the people you want them to after your death rather than being swallowed up by the tax man
THE FAPT is not a new idea but is an idea that has stood the test of time. In principle it is a way of protecting valuable assets from outside influences and ensuring that they are kept within the family. It may help you to think of the trust as a ‘safety deposit box’ to keep your assets in. You can pass assets to a family trust established in your own name and for your own benefit whilst you are still living. Placing your assets into a family trust should ensure that they pass to the people you want them to after your death, according to the terms of the Trust, or under the terms of your will. Inheritance due to any unreliable beneficiary can be protected by the trust and be passed to them at a more appropriate time. The family trust is set up during
your lifetime and you can put all your assets, including your home and savings up to the current inheritance tax threshold of £325,000 (per person). Legally, ownership of the assets pass from you to you and another named person who then holds the property as “trustees”. You will always remain in control of assets held in trust. If you have concerns about inheritance tax or are worried that your estate could suffer from “side ways” inheritance, the Family Asset Protection Trust could be the answer. Like all of the solutions we offer there is a free consultation, to ensure that you can make an informed choice. Feel free to call us on 01484 518777 or use the contact form on our website www.myifm.co.uk
A will isn’t necessArily the wAy… You could be enjoying these benefits: • Knowledge that your home will stay in your family as you desire • Comfort that any unwanted claims against your estate will not be successful • Lowering professional probate fees by £1,000s • Possibly save £10,000s in care fees • Protection of your home against unwanted circumstances such as bankruptcy, divorce, family disruption, disinheritance, relationship breakdowns and so on. • Assets can also be added to the trust at a later date.

Enjoy care without a care in the world A
ROUND 500,000 people aged over 65 are cared for by community nurses and private domestic carers, although for those who need more supportresidential care homes and nursing homes could be a better option. It’s not an easy choice to make, but as we get older our needs change, including accommodation needs, and sometimes that added security and less space to maintain could be just what you need. Maybe you’re finding it a struggle to dress in the mornings, or you may need more expert medical care to ensure you get the most out of life. There are plenty of options available, from retirement or sheltered housing to care homes and nursing homes.
Retirement housing Retirement or sheltered housing is designed specifically for older people, often built in developments of self-contained flats or bungalows, offering more chance to socialise with people of a similar age. It gives you the freedom of living in your own home but with added security, as there is usually an on-site warden/manager, and alarm system linked to a 24hour communication centre‚ which can summon help for you in an emergency. If retirement housing be for you, 50+LIVING is publishedcould by the Huddersfield thinkExaminder. about the location of the develCopyright of editorial contents held bythe Trinity Mirror. The magazine is printed by Mirror
Colour Printers (Oldham) Ltd. Advertisements Care homes are accepted according to our terms and
conditions. Care homes provide accomm- odation‚ personal care and sometimes nursing care. They are staffed 24 hours a day and all meals are provided.
Care homes are intended for older people whose care and support needs mean they can no longer live independently. The costs are usually high compared to other housing options, and the main source of help with fees is local authority social services. Choosing a care home is an important decision; it will‚ after all‚ be your newhome. Always visit a home before deciding to move there, and take a list of points to check and questions to ask.
Nursing homes If you have a disability or illness that means you need nursing care on a frequent basis, then a care home with nursing (sometimes called a nursing home) might be more appropriate. A qualified nurse will be on duty 24 hours a day. You can choose your own care home with nursing but it must meet your needs – some may be more equipped to better assist certain illnesses. These homes will provide for a range of situations, covering specialist care for conditions such as Parkinson’s disease; dementia care for such as Alzheimer’s; respite care convalescent or post-operative care; palliative and terminal care.
Choosing a home Firstly, remember you have the right to information such as costs, services and inspection results of each care home, plus try to visit at least three care homes. Think about the location – it’s best to keep links with friends, family members and interests. As well as asking specific questions about the care and facilities‚ consider whether you like the atmosphere: do the residents seem happy and appear alert and occupied? Are staff spending time talking to residents, encouraging them to do things for themselves? Are staff taking time to help frail residents eat and drink? Are there any signs of depression or malnutrition? If you like a home‚ see if it is possible to
go there for a trial period before making a long-term commitment, and make sure you visit a few times and, if possible, at different times of the day. Other things to ask about: What extras do you pay for, such as TVs in rooms; if more/ less care is needed in the future, can the home provide this; how much notice do you give if you’re moving out; what fees are payable if you’re on holiday or in hospital. Regarding services, ask about: how medication is managed, and if you can keep your own GP; special diets catered for; do rooms have a phone; can you go to the shops as you please; what personal possessions are you allowed to bring; how is laundry taken care of; what activities can residents take part in.
Assessment If you feel you need more assistance then the next step is to arrange a Needs Assessment with the local authority’s Social Services department. This considers an individual’s specific care needs and how these can best be met. The assessment should take place in your own home if you are still living there, or in hospital if you are about to be discharged.
A CARING APPROACH People choose to live in a care home for all sorts of reasons but selecting the right one is an important decison

A PHARMACIST is a university graduate who has completed a four year degree course followed by a year of preregistration training. Only then can he or she be allowed to practice. A pharmacist is an expert on medicine and is the only healthcare professional you can freely access in your local pharmacy. Using the same pharmacy regularly for your prescriptions allows a build up of a detailed patient profile and medication records which can be used to highlight any potential problems. It allows the pharmacist to carry out a ‘Medicines Use Review’ and give advice on the medicines being taken.
For minor ailments, your pharmacist can advise you on the most suitable medicine to purchase which will not interfere with your prescription medication. Pharmacies now offer advice and services on Alcohol Use, Smoking Cessation, Healthy Living, Emergency Contraception, Minor Ailments etc. The patient is free to use any pharmacy he or she chooses for their prescriptions. Only a pharmacy allows a face to face contact, flexibility and personal service that good healthcare demands. Remember, make full use of your local pharmacy.

ROSE HILL GREEN BURIALS a place of tranquil beauty
At one with nature... ROSE Hill Burial Ground offers a unique service in Huddersfield. Situated in a very peaceful setting, the natural burial ground welcomes any religion or belief. Individual graves can be consecrated as desired. Rose Hill encourages the use of biodegradable materials in the preparation of bodies, and the use of environmentally friendly coffins. Owners can arrange pre-bookings of individual or family plots, welcomes cremated remains for interment. Rose Hill is one of the most scenic and peaceful settings in Yorkshire and a very special place to celebrate nature and life. The burial ground makes as little impact on the surroundings as possible so that the natural beauty is always maintained. Susan and Michael Brook, who own Rose Hill said: “We like to encourage families to slow things down, allowing time to reflect and absorb what has happened.
Later they can spend time at the burial ground, in the fresh air, listening to the birdsong, and giving themselves the space and peace to grieve. “We believe that it is important for our burial ground to have a secure future, and that it is both environmentally and economically sustainabe. For this reason we have unobtrusive horizontal green slate plaques as our memorials making it easier for long term maintenance and also less to vandalise, whist providing a much appreciated tribute to loved ones. “Another advantage of using the slate plaques is that the remaining grave can be planted with spring bulbs which make a marvellous natural spring show.’’ The owners of Rose Hill are dedicated to maintaining the standards and qualities that make the burial ground so special, and continue to be hugely encouraged by the support from bereaved families.

Planning a funeral: where do you start? WE all want our family to be around us forever and put off thinking about how we would cope or what we would do should their health deteriorate or the worse happens. Most of us are unprepared if we suddenly find ourselves having to make funeral arrangements so this is the time to turn to the expertise of an experienced funeral director. This can be an extremely distressing and emotional time. These days you can often make a lot of your funeral arrangements before you die – for example, how many cars you want or where you want to be buried or cremated – and it can all be paid for in advance. Pre-paid funeral plans are becoming increasingly popular. If your loved one or relative has passed away, then there’s a lot to think about. It can be comforting to know what their wishes are so check if they’ve left any requests – did they want to be buried or cremated? Do they want a religious service? Did they make any requests about hymns or readings?
A TIME TO CARE A funeral is time for families to come together An increasing number of sites around the country offer ecofriendly funerals. Many involve green ceremonies at special woodland burial grounds, wild flower meadows or pastures. Instead of traditional nonsustainable wooden coffins, cardboard is often used along with woollen shrouds. The aim of a natural burial ground is to provide a place of quiet contemplation for relatives, while being
environmentally friendly. Graves can be planted up with spring bulbs and such grounds often feature displays of wild flowers, giving a rich display of colour. Most funeral directors now offer a choice of `green’ coffins and this preference now accounts for around five per cent of all coffins sold in the UK. For those who aren’t religious then a humanist funeral might be worth considering.
■ PEARSON’s Funeral Service is a
Some people don’t feel it’s appropriate to have a religious ceremony for someone who didn’t go to church but still want to give their loved a suitably special service. A humanist service celebrates a person’s life and their achievements rather than focusing on traditional religious funeral rites. The family are consulted at every stage and can choose appropriate readings and music to help ensure the ceremony is a reflection of their loved one’s life. More details can be found at www. humanism.org.uk. You will need to arrange refreshments after the funeral service. Many local pubs can provide a funeral buffet and will be glad to help and advise. Although this is a gathering of family and friends at a time of grief, it is also a time for people to get together, catch up and enjoy sharing their memories. A simple buffet is usually all that is needed as people enjoy a drink and a bite to eat.
name you can trust. In 1923, 23 year old Alfred Bagley established a joinery and funeral business in the now demolished Old Silk Mill at Warehouse Hill, Marsden. He ran the business with his wife Carrie who was in charge of the paper work and they were later joined by their son Peter who then took over the business in 1962. In 2003 Clive Pearson bought the business from Peter Bagley. Over the years he has added branches in Meltham and Holmfirth and purchased a Mercedes and Rolls Royce Fleet. Clive now runs the business with his wife Leanne with both their parents helping out when required. They recently employed Skye who is the first ever female Funeral Director to work within the company. The Pearson families professional reputation has been built on trust and recommendation and they have become known as the family firm who care. Clive said: “Our reputation has been built on trust and we pride ourselves in giving the highest standard of service. We help and guide family members through the difficult decisions and legal requirements. We offer a full range of services which include chauffer-driven Mercedes hearse and limousines, green funerals, catering, flowers, monumental masonry and pre-paid funerals. Each funeral is tailored to the personal requirements of the family and carried out with dignity and respect.’’
