Huddersfield Grammar School the co-educational school for girls & boys age 3 to 16

Open Morning

Saturday, 19th June 2010, 9.30am – noon Huddersfield Grammar School | Royds Mount, Luck Lane, Marsh, Huddersfield HD1 4QX Tel: 01484 424549 | Fax: 01484 531835 Visit our website for more information: www.huddersfield-grammarschool.co.uk The security and sense of belonging which Huddersfield Grammar School can offer through an excellent pupil:teacher ratio and small teaching groups for children aged 3 to 16 years are amongst the most important factors in promoting the happiness and success of pupils through independent education. However, as we all know, school is not just about classroom activities and parents tell us that it is the ethos of the school that attracts them. A recent programme of investment and improvements at the school has included a new ICT suite and outdoor play areas. Our next Open Day is on Saturday 19th June, when visitors are welcome to come and see the School in action and meet the pupils and teachers. This is an ideal opportunity to experience a day at School, a true insight into the atmosphere and daily activities. Individual visits can also be arranged at other times.

WIMMING is a great way to keep fit and have fun Babies have a real affinity with water as they have spent months in the womb submerged in fluid. And teaching your baby to be comfortable in the water is easier than you may think as they can be completely independent as the water supports their weight as they are free to kick their legs and arms as much as they like. If you’re really keen on teaching your baby to swim from an early age, it might be worth you enrolling on a Puddle Ducks course.

W

HEN you first become a parent, it can get a bit lonely being at home all day with your baby, especially if your partner has gone back to work. If you’re starting to get cabin fever, then why not check out what’s going on in your area? There are lots of classes, groups and activities in Huddersfield where you can meet other parents and carers while helping develop your baby’s social skills. It’s great to be able to compare notes and share your experiences with other new parents – you’d be amazed at the tips that can be picked up – from dealing with nappy rash and colic to coping with sleepless nights. And you and your baby can learn new skills such as baby massage, baby yoga or you could even join a parents’ walking group or ‘prambles,’ where you can meet up with your prams and head off to the local park – great for losing that baby weight. You could join your local branch of National Childbirth Trust (NCT) which holds courses and groups all over the UK. V i s i t h t t p : / / w w w. n c t p r e g n a n c y a n d b ab ycare.com/home to find your nearest branch. Your local leisure centre may have sessions for tots, such as musical minis, toddler rhyme time or splash and sing swimming sessions. Gymbabes also offers activity classes for babies aged from six months – call 0151 249 6645 for more details. It’s also worth you checking out your local SureStart Children’s Centre. A ‘one-stop shop’ for children under five and their families, these centres are designed to help you give your child the best possible start in life. They are somewhere your child can make friends and learn as they play. You can get professional advice on health and family matters, learn about training and job opportunities or just meet up with other mums and dads. HILDREN don’t stay little for long and as they grow up its lovely to capture each stage with photographs that you can cherish forever. There are lots of different styles of photography to suit all tastes and budgets from the traditional portrait where the child is sat facing the camera to the more modern relaxed action shots on location and from colourful images to the more atmospheric black and white or sepia shots. Whichever you choose, its important that the photographer captures the character of your child. Children’s photographers also need to have lots of tricks up their sleeve, as well as lots of props and toys for keeping little ones entertained as they can quickly tire of having to pose or sit still. They are expert at bringing shy children out of their shell and are well equipped at dealing with the inevitable runny noses and jammy fingers. Once you’ve had your photo shoot, you will usually be offered the chance to view the pictures and choose which ones you prefer as well as deciding how you would like them to be framed. And then the real hard work begins because not only are parents faced with framed prints these days, there are canvasses, acrylics, box frames and multi frames, the choice is simply endless. There are also lots of photo gifts you can have made which make great gifts for family and friends, from key rings and fridge magnets to photo mugs and books. It’s all about creating memories which you will treasure and pass down through the generations. Let’s have a chat with a couple of local photographers who work with families in the local area: John Woods Photography is based in Byram Arcade and has worked with hundreds of local families over the years to capture their precious memories. He says: “Over the past decade the trend has moved away from the more traditional dark background style photographs to lighter more relaxed and informal images. “Our new large town centre studios in Byram Arcade lend themselves to this contemporary style. “Children look their best when relaxed so having a good selection of props and toys to keep them entertained and put them at ease is vital.’’ Hundreds of families have chosen John Woods Photography to capture important moments in their lives over the past 24 years and John has worked with the Examiner many times to take Baby of the Year photographs for the newspaper’s popular annual competition. John Woods has just launched a family portrait promotion in conjunction with Kodak with a £1,000 first prize. He said: “It would be great to have a family from Huddersfield win the national prize and we will also be awarding a £300 canvas print to a lucky local family who enter the competition.’’ For details please call John Woods on (01484) 514744 or look on our blog. www.johnwoods.net Andrew Hale Photography is also a popular choice with local parents wanting to capture images of their babies and young children. He said: “Baby photography is about the emotion of the event and the beauty of the new arrival in the family. Some expectant mum’s wish to start before the birth and we take some tasteful, low key, photography of the “bump”, perhaps involving dad and other siblings to capture the excitement of the forthcoming event and the beauty of pregnancy. “Photography for bumps and babies should be simple and beautiful. I don’t believe props are required for most of this photography as mum and dad are themselves the great props for a

new baby.’’ “ Low key photography brings out the skins tones in the child. Parents should not dress them in ill fitting or overly ornate clothes as it distracts the baby and constantly need adjusting to prevent them hiding the baby’s features, be it hands, feet or face. “We try to involve parents whenever possible. Young babies need their support anyway and they respond to the friendly and familiar face better than the lens of a camera. I generally use a long lens for baby photography so that I can get the close ups without sticking a large lens right in their face. “Skin to skin shots with parents are fabulous. Mum gently cradling her new baby or dad holding the baby and showing the contrast between his size and the baby. “Bumps are generally good to photograph at about seven months, while mum is still comfortable with her pregnancy. New babies to go with a bump photo are best under two months to maintain the link between bump and baby. “Separate baby shoots are best with babies from three months onwards as you can get better responses from the baby after three months.’’ Six to seven months is ideal for a second shoot when they can nearly sit unaided and are happy on their front and push up and lift their heads. They are also very responsive at this age. Finally photograph again at 10-11 months when they can sit, crawl, nearly stand (or lean against a chair). Family photographs involving baby are great from six months as the baby needs less support and can be an independent new member of the family. This photography looks great in colour, black and white or a variety of sepia tints we use. Parents – take the opportunity for great child photography – they are never the same again!!

TRUGGLING to pay for childcare? There’s a lot of financial help available for parents, for example: Child Benefit is a tax-free payment that you can claim for your child. It is usually paid every four weeks but in some cases can be paid weekly, and there are separate rates for each child. The payment can be claimed by anyone who qualifies, whatever their income or savings, if they have a child under 16. If you’re working, you may be able to claim tax credits for up to 80% of your childcare costs. This could be up to £175 for one child or £300 a week (for two or more children) depending on family income. For more information on tax credits, call the Tax Credits Helpline on: 0845 300 3900. Some employers offer employer supported childcare. This is usually via a childcare voucher scheme or salary sacrifice scheme. If you are unemployed or work for less than 16 hours per week and you have a partner who is in work, with a joint household income of less than £20,000 a year, you could get free childcare

while you train and learn for work. Call Learner Support helpline on 0800 121 8989. Lone parents looking for jobs or training may also be able to get help for childcare costs through Jobcentre Plus. If you are a young parent aged under 20 you could get help towards childcare costs so you can continue your education or training. Call the Learner Support helpline on 0800 121 8989. All three and four year olds are entitled to a minimum of 12.5 hours FREE early learning a week – for 38 weeks a year. From September 2010, this increases to 15 hours a week, to be delivered flexibly over a minimum of 38 weeks. Some local authorities run a pilot scheme to provide targeted, free childcare for two year olds. Places are limited and strict criteria apply. Great ideas for fun fa days out this summ

F you’re a young family, then you need to get out and about in the local area. Huddersfield and district is rich in great ideas for fabulous days out so here are just a few suggestions on where to go this summer. Just a short drive away from Huddersfield is Cannon Hall near Cawthorne. With acres of open space, an historic house, beautiful gardens and a popular farm, Cannon Hall is worth a visit any time of year and is great for all ages. Particularly popular is the farm which has a great selection of animals including goats, donkeys, pigs, horses and much more. From very small to very large animals, Cannon Hall has it all. Enjoy a visit soon! This summer, there’s heaps going on at the National Coal Mining Museum for England. Whilst on your visit to the Museum, you could also go on the underground tour, see the displays and exhibitions on coal mining through the ages, visit Hope Pit, and enjoy the nature trail and adventure playground. There’s so much to see for all ages so why not enjoy a family visit this year? Nostell Priory and Parkland is a Palladian Mansion set in 340 acres of rolling parkland on the outskirts of Wakefield, within easy reach of A1, M1 & M62. It is an architectural treasure house renowned for it’s collection of Chippendale and Robert Adam architecture. Nostell Priory is also a popular venue for weddings, events and functions, providing a warm welcome to visitors of all ages and ensuring everyone has a good day out. Kirklees Light Railway in Clayton West is a great day out for all the family. With regular special events and weekends, this is a chance to enjoy train rides through picturesque countryside. With other facilities including play equipment and a cafe, this is a super day out for the young and the not-so-young. Just a short drive away in Halifax is Eureka, the long established museum for children. With ever-changing attractions, this is always a great day out for children of all ages. If your family is sticking to a budget, there are great days out in the local area which cost next-to-nothing. For just the price of an ice cream etc, you can enjoy walks in the local countryside. Why not have a drive out to one of the local reservoirs such

as Dove Stones on the way to Greenfield? This is a chance to see yachts sailing on the water, enjoy an ice cream, feed the ducks, paddle in the stream and walk all around the reservoir. Whatever you do this summer, have a great time and get out and about in the local area.

ust because it’s raining, it doesn’t mean the fun has to stop. There’s still plenty to do as a family even if the sun has stopped shining and the heavens have opened. Why not get wrapped up against the elements and enjoy a walk together? Get your wellies on so the kids can splash through the puddles and don’t worry about the raindrops. Alternatively you could enjoy a visit to the cinema or book a game of ten-pin bowling? Stay-at-home days can be fun with games, dressing up or having friends round. When the rain starts, have a think about alternative ways to fill holiday days and weekends.

`I’m very lucky, she’s a really good baby’

N

EW mum Emma Jennings knows she is lucky. Not only has she got a beautiful baby girl Eva Mae but she’s got a daughter who can be described as a `really good baby’. Emma, who is currently on maternity leave from her job at the Examiner as a telesales canvasser, gave birth to Eva in the middle of October, weighing 7lbs 14ozs at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. Emma and her partner Gareth Patrice couldn’t wait to bring Eva home and start their lives as new parents. Despite Eva being a week late, the birth was relatively straightforward and Emma left hospital the following evening. She said: “I was lucky because Gareth was off work for three weeks after Eva was born. We got ourselves into a routine before Gareth went back to work and I was on my own with the baby.’’ The only slight problems Emma and Gareth have had with Eva was when she was moved out of her Moses basket into a full size cot. “When she was sleeping in her Moses basket, she actually slept through for a full 12 hours. Now she is sleeping in her cot, she seems to keep waking up in the night, two or three times, although we are coping with this q u i t e w e l l ,’ ’ s a i d Emma. Emma regularly spends time with her friends, some who have a l r e a dy h a d t h e i r babies and others who are due to give birth shortly. Emma said: “We get together regularly for a chat and go into town etc. “Gareth says I’m always out and about during the day. “Eva is a really good baby most of the time. She does have her moments when she’s a bit grumpy but most of the time she is great. Generally she is a very happy baby.’’ The whole experience of giving birth and having a first baby has not put Emma and Gareth off having more children. Emma said: “We would definitely like to have more children.’’ Photographs on this page show Emma and Eva in their early months together.
