This issue we are delighted to bring you our Readers’ Survey Competition winner, Jane Woodage.

J

ane, who is 53, is a regular reader of the Huddersfield Magazine, and was keen to let us know what she liked best and new features she would like to see. “I never expected to win the competition, but the makeover is one of my absolute favourites so I was thrilled to get it,” she says. Though she keeps very active, Jane has the condition fibromyalgia, which gives her constant muscle pain. “I had a bad car accident over twenty years ago,” she explains. “The fibromyalgia started after that. It varies and some days are better than others, so I just have to pace myself.” We are therefore impressed at how well she holds up - it’s no picnic trying on countless outfits and then spending several tiring hours posing for the photographer!

Jane’s hair is quite short to begin with, but Adam and Tracy at Adam Summers have plans. They both feel that blonde is washing her out a bit, and that she would be better with the overall colour darker - a rich version of her natural colour - with some bright blonde highlights.

Before

They consult together, as they want to use the colour to enhance the cut, then Tracy makes a start. She uses foils to put some bold, broad highlights in, but places them carefully through the hair rather than on top. A rich soft brown with a hint of auburn provides the base that the blonde will gleam through, modernising the colour. It also means that maintenance will be easier, as the highlights will need touching up less often! Adam wants to soften the cut, while keeping the overall shape. He feels that the hair at the crown is quite long and cutting it shorter will give it lift. He does still leave some length on top to keep the balance, but graduates it more as there had been quite an abrupt transition from the shorter front to the longer top. Jane’s fringe is quite square, and Adam and Tracy want to style it more to the side. Tracy has cleverly used the colour so that it shows boldly when the fringe is to the left, and more subtly when it’s to the right. Adam is a bit frustrated by the squareness, as he wants to curve the hair around Jane’s jawline. He tells her she must come back when it’s grown a bit more! >

Styling products give height and volume to the hair, but the style will be easy to maintain at home. Next we are heading to Greta at Lenitive Plus. She uses Youngblood mineral cosmetics, which treat the skin while looking gorgeous. She uses a brush to apply a liquid foundation carefully matched to Jane’s own skin tone, then adds a dusting of powder to set it. A slightly peachy pink blusher suits Jane’s warm colouring and brightens her face. Pink eyeshadow all the way up to the brow is a surprising choice, but looks fantastic. Shimmering brown applied to the outer corner and in the crease, then blended, draws attention to Jane’s dark eyes. A bit of eyeliner on the top inner lid and just the outer corner of the bottom lid open up the eye, and mascara provides the necessary finishing touch. The lipsticks will vary from corals to redder shades, depending on the outfits. Now we’re done with hair and makeup, and Jane is looking great, so we need a great-looking venue to do our photoshoot. And where better than the gorgeous Edgerton offices of Ramsdens Solicitors. The old Victorian mill owner’s house has been converted into offices, but retains loads of original features that form the perfect backdrop for us. Jane (like most of us) has a habit of wearing black because it’s easy. But she actually looks best in bright colours, so that’s what we are looking for. She has a classic hourglass figure, so we also want styles that will show off her tiny waist. Our first outfit is a gorgeous rich brown linen suit with orange bead detail from Précis in Peters. The top from Planet sets the detail off to perfection, and cute retro orange tap shoes from Office complete the orange theme. The stunning bag from Cellini and some wooden jewellery are in keeping with the brown, natural feel.

SPRING/SUMMER 2009

Orange is a truly stunning colour on Jane, and we find the perfect dress at Pixie. You might think we would struggle to find shoes to match, but orange is very ‘in’ this season and the pair from Office look like they were made from the sash! The bright bag from Faith and sparkly jewellery from Noemi and Wallis complete the party look. A fitted bodice and full skirt will always look great on Jane, and the pretty dress from Monsoon is in just the right colours. Stylish satin shoes from Kitten Heels set off the fabric of the frock, and the jewellery from Noemi picks up on the blues. >

We fell in love with the flowery trench coat from Kitten Heels as soon as we saw it, and decided to team it with jeans from Next. The top, from the same Bellissima range at Kitten Heels, is a perfect match to the coat and so are the shoes. Cute Swatch jewellery and watch from Stonez and the ring and earrings from Noemi keep the look fresh and summery. Jane doesn’t tend to wear jeans, but we think she should give them a try. So we team the pair from Next with a red checked blouse and stripy wedges for a casual, laid back look. The red Swatch jewellery and watch from Stonez carry that feel through, and earrings from Noemi match perfectly. We team the perfect black skinny jeans from Pixie with a jersey top from Wallis with a wide scoop neck. The belt from Pixie shows off that tiny waist (we had a choice of three belts and the other two were just too big - this one only fit because it ties!). High shoes from Faith and stylish Briel jewellery from Stonez give this jeans outfit a more sophisticated feel. Last but not least, we choose a teal blue dress in a soft draping jersey fabric from Pixie. The cut is again perfect to enhance Jane’s figure. The gold plastic Vivienne Westwood shoes from Pixie are a grown-up version of jellies, and minimal jewellery from Monsoon keeps the overall look classic. >

It’s been a grand day, and Jane loves her new looks. “You haven’t chosen anything I don’t like; I would be happy to wear all of it.” She has taken on board the advice about colour: “I do tend to just go for black and dark colours, but I can really see that the brighter colours do make me look better. I look livelier with these colours.” Jane adds: “I was a bit worried about having this makeover and having my photograph taken, but it’s been brilliant. I’ve really enjoyed it!” Right: Coat - Kitten Heels Jeans - Next Top - Kitten Heels Shoes - Kitten Heels Necklace, bracelet, ring, watch - Swatch at Stonez Earrings, ring - Noemi at House of Fraser Below: Suit - Précis at Peters Top - Planet at Peters Shoes - Office Bag - Cellini Necklace - Buckingham at House of Fraser Bracelet - Buckingham at House of Fraser

Tall Glass Lantern £5, Matalan

And there are plenty of interesting places to visit as well, from museums and stately homes to fun places for the kids. With loads of restaurants and bars to enjoy, all that’s really missing is somewhere to lounge around when you’re not busy being a tourist. The solution? Take some of that money you’ve saved on a holiday and treat yourself to a fabulous new outdoor space. Mosaic Firepit £199, M&S

Does your garden or patio need sprucing up? Have you always wanted to have tea on the lawn Edwardian-style, looking like Helena Bonham-Carter in A Room With A View? We can’t guarantee a look for you, but we can help with your garden!

Wax Buckets £2, Matalan

We’ve been looking at what’s available via the shops in Huddersfield town centre, and whatever your taste or budget you will be spoilt for choice. Floral Cushion £10, Matalan

Modern or traditional, metal, wood or wicker, minimal or luxurious - the choice is yours. We love delicate metal in elegant shapes, softened with chintzy cushions or stylish swathes of linen.

But then again, we want to lounge like Katherine Hepburn on classic teak steamer chairs, wearing a headscarf and outsize sunglasses! Or sink into luxuriantly cushioned wicker (with a footstool of course). Hmmmm ... decisions, decisions ...

Now we all know that it’s not just down to whether your taste is for traditional wood and wicker or trendy plastic in neon colours. It comes down to cost too (just like those old-style holidays, from Butlins to Benidorm to Bali!) But you can find every style at a price to fit every pocket - and even if you can’t afford a whole new set of furniture it’s amazing what new accessories can do to freshen up some tired furniture. Pretty retro cushions, pastel tealights, antique lanterns and some of the prettiest garden lights we’ve seen in a long time combine to create the perfect setting for a late high tea that stretches into the evening. Or get it all in the latest bright, bright colours for a modern edgy look, and combine with a barbeque to entertain all your friends. Umbrellas and gazebos provide that vital finishing touch, as well as protection from the sun and (dare we say it) occasional rain. Whether you have the rolling lawns of a Victorian vicarage or the bijou balcony of a mill-conversion flat, you can find everything you need for outdoor living right here in our town centre.

It’s

According to the forecasters, we’re in for a lovely summer this time.

4 person picnic hamper £45, Next

hey’re predicting plenty of hot, sunny weather for us all to enjoy (they are also talking about thunderstorms, but we’re pretending we haven’t heard that bit).

T

So it’s the perfect opportunity to plan some long lazy days out ... and of course doing nothing’s pretty hungry work, so you’ll have to make sure you take a picnic!

Folding chair £15, M&S

Forget about soggy egg sandwiches and a flask of tea in the car in the lashing rain at the seaside, we’re planning to make an effort this time.

Four person Vintage floral design picnic hamper £35, Bhs

And the shops are doing everything they can to make our task easier. Proper picnic hampers are all the rage this summer, and you can find them in all kinds of styles. From retro wicker baskets to modern vinyl cool bags, they are all ingeniously packed with everything you need for eating and drinking.

And we don’t mean paper plates and polystyrene cups. There are so many pretty plastic plates, bowls and glasses of all kinds - from tumblers to champagne flutes - that there’s no excuse for not looking glamorous out there! The next thing to think about is what you’re planning to eat and drink from your stylish picnicware. It obviously needs to be finger or fork food, but that doesn’t have to limit you to sandwiches and crisps. Quiches and frittatas are easy to prepare and eat, and salads always go down well - base them on rice, couscous or quinoa for a change, and go for a Mediterranean feel with lemon juice, fresh herbs, nuts and seeds. >

Soup may not be the first thing you think of for a picnic, but a refreshing chilled gazpacho or sophisticated vichysoisse poured into small cups or glasses is truly tasty and easy to serve. If you wake up one morning to find that it’s a perfect summer’s day, don’t worry about not having anything prepared. Grab some bread, cheese and cold meats, cut fresh veggies into crudités, add some humous or ready-made dips, and you’re ready to go. Fresh fruit will round things off nicely.

Last but not least, make sure you have some games with you for when swinging from trees/paddling in the stream/running up and down hills (delete as appropriate) begins to lose its charm. What are you waiting for? Head out into the hills (or the park, or the seaside) and have some fun!

Do make sure you play safe, and keep your picnic cool - use a cool bag or cool box with ice blocks or even a bag of ice cubes, which can then be added to drinks. If you have planned ahead you can freeze bottles of water or juice, use them to keep the food chilled and drink them when they have thawed! Picnic Bag £39.50, Picnic Rucksack £19.50, M&S

Summer Events in Town There’s always plenty to do in Huddersfield in the summer, and this year’s no exception! Look out for your regular favourites (most of them organised by the Huddersfield Town Centre Partnership and its members, we might add) and some new ones, too. Hope you’ve managed to get to our Plant Sales on 9 May (new this year) and 6 June - but don’t worry if you haven’t, there’s still one more chance. Head down to New Street on Saturday 4 July and you will find around 20 stalls. And all of them belong to specialists who can not only sell you plants, but give good advice on their care. A one-off this year, and one we just can’t wait for, is the big birthday party for the 60th anniversary of the Huddersfield Circle of Magicians. To celebrate, they’ve invited a host of stars to join them at the Lawrence Batley Theatre on Saturday 27 June.

But the organising committee is determined that the event will still take place, especially since they have a grant from the Arts Council to help. The Queen’s Show on Friday evening at the Town Hall will be followed on Saturday 11 July at 1:00pm by the main parade from the Hudawi Centre at Great Northern Street through the streets to Huddersfield Town Hall. The Grand Opening on Friday 24 July features a Batman theme and Pulse radio outside broadcast. Saturday will have a James Bond theme with lookalikes and the winner of the Bond Girl competition.

The following two weeks will see superhero themed game shows, street entertainers and craft shows. The Grand Finale on Friday 7 August features Haurel & Lardy, including the original Model T Ford used by Laurel & Hardy themselves. Huddersfield Art Gallery is joining in the summer holiday fun with a packed programme of artist-led holiday activities for children, inspired by Material Intelligence, an exciting and challenging exhibition of sculpture in the gallery. Pleased This issue we can’t make up our minds whether we are profiling Hardy or his fabulous Byram Arcade shop, The Left Bank.

tomeet... . . . Hardy Punglia at The Left Bank

n these difficult times, it’s important to remember the independent shops that make Huddersfield unique, and keep people coming to our town.

I

So we thought we would just remind you that up on the second floor of the Byram Arcade you will find an amazing gem, a truly unusual shop. Where else can you go and actually be served by the designer himself? Hardy grew up in Huddersfield, and says that his passion for clothing and fashion started in sixth form. “It really came from not having a uniform anymore. Clothes were something to be taken seriously, and we all dressed to impress! That’s when I started to experiment with making my own clothes, things no one else would be wearing.” However, Hardy didn’t initially see it as a career, and went on to study Chemistry at Nottingham Trent University when he left college. “But I decided quite quickly that it wasn’t for me, that it was definitely not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.” After the first year Hardy took the plunge, moved back to Huddersfield and took an art foundation course. The next stage was a degree in fashion at the University of Northumbria. Hardy is sure that it was the right decision: “From that moment on I haven’t looked back. I’m not saying it’s been easy, but it has always felt like it’s worth the effort.” Hardy’s background includes a stint as a designer at Lucy Barnes in New York and time as a personal shopper at Harvey Nichols, before he took the giant step of opening his own boutique in November 2007. “Working in New York gave me a great understanding of the fashion design business, and my time at Harvey Nicks was brilliant for giving me an insight into how people shop - and experience in selling,” says Hardy.

The shop isn’t just a shop, however, it’s also where Hardy designs and makes everything he sells. Hardy talks about his own designs: “I design clothes that are highly wearable but with a twist - it can’t be the same as anything you can find anywhere else. It could be through unusual fabric choices or the way it’s cut, as I have a keen interest in creative pattern cutting.” Menswear is the most recent addition to the range, and Hardy says: “I’m really excited about my menswear. I’ve wanted to do it for ages, not only because I feel there’s not enough choice out there for blokes, but because I get to wear it myself! “My menswear is a completely modern take on classic smart/casual street wear. For example, I’ll take something like a classic sweatshirt and completely reinvent it through clever cutting and use of luxury fabrics.” Hardy says it can be struggle balancing his time between business and creativity but he believes it’s all worth it. “Still now when I come in in the mornings I’m thinking ‘wow, this is my shop’ it’s so cool.” The Left Bank is one of the hidden gems of Huddersfield, and provides shoppers with a quirky and unique alternative to the high street. Hardy says: “I think it’s just what Huddersfield needs. Town centres are full of chain stores, but I think the mood is changing away from disposable fashion and towards investment pieces.” Hardy has recently moved into a bigger shop in the Arcade, and explains: “I want the shop to appeal to a broad range of customers, whether for clothing or accessories. The main purpose of the new bigger shop space is to offer something to as many customers as possible, but without compromising on the creativity and uniqueness of the products stocked.”

He adds: “It’s all experience that has helped give me the confidence to set up on my own - although it’s still taken a lot of courage!”

Skin Deep Beauty You have told us you would like to see some features on beauty, so we thought we would see what we could do. There are three of us in the editorial office, and we decided to go and try out treatments on your behalf. It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it! First up, and keeping with a summer theme, we have been testing the spray tans on offer. All three of us are fake tan ‘virgins’ so we had no idea what to expect. We were a bit worried about turning orange, but were reassured that the tanning industry has moved on and really subtle effects are what to expect - and we are all delighted to report back that the results were fantastic every time.

On arrival I was asked to fill in a health questionnaire. I was then taken into the tanning room, provided with paper panties (choice of full or thong) and a shower cap. Sticky mats protected the bottoms of my feet. There is one colour available, which you can have applied twice to go darker, so I decided to brave it and go really tanned. As advised, I had taken dark, loose clothing and flip flops to wear afterwards. The process took half an hour in total. I was given detailed written instructions on my way out about after-treatment, which I followed closely to get the maximum benefits. Some of the tan did come off on the sheets the first night, as I was advised not to shower until the morning, but I was expecting that. The tan lasts for a week, and a top up tan only costs £16. The initial full body tan costs £22 and there are often special offers available. I would go back as the tan has made me feel so much more healthy. I have had lots of positive comments, all saying how well I look or asking if I have been on holiday. Cathy

I arrived prepared, as I had asked over the phone about what I needed to do and had been given instructions. At urbanescape there is a choice of three percentages of the colour and I picked medium, after consultation with the staff. The tanning facility uses the shower cubicle in one of the treatment rooms, which means that there is no build-up of the spray on the walls and floor. I was given a paper thong, and sticky pads to put on my feet so the tan wouldn't build up as I moved around. The therapist sprayed me as I turned under her instructions, then dried me off for five minutes. I then stood for a further five minutes to finish drying before putting my clothes back on. The total time was about 30 minutes. Some tan came off on the sheets overnight, but I had expected that. I was surprised at how much came off in the shower the next day, but was still as brown as I wanted to be. The tan costs £20, and I would definitely say it was worth it. I have had lots of people commenting on it, and they have all been surprised when I said it was fake. Alison

I was probably the most reluctant to do this, as I have the palest skin so was quite worried that it would look really obvious. However, I was pleasantly surprised at the result, and all the comments I had afterwards were positive. No one realised until I told them that it was fake tan. I had been emailed instructions for pre- and after-care, so was ready with a change of clothing. Lauren was very reassuring, and advised me to go for the palest of the three intensities on offer. She gave me paper bikini bottoms to wear, and sticky paper to protect the soles of my feet, and took me to the tanning room to get changed. The actual spraying took about five minutes, then I was blow dried for another five before getting changed. The whole process was very quick, and I was finished within half an hour. A little of the tan came off in bed, because I was told not to shower or have a bath until the morning, but it was still very even. Studio 18 charges £15 for a spray tan, which I thought was very reasonable, and special offers are available on their website. Julia

REVIEW

RESTAURANT The Virtual Huddersfield reviewers decided it was time to go for an Indian again, and here’s what they thought of Shabab.

We ate at Shabab on New Street, one of Huddersfield’s original Indian restaurants. It is a short walk from the bus and train stations, with plenty of parking available nearby. Shabab is very deceptive - from the outside it looks small and run down, but the inside is beautifully decorated with perfect lighting and gentle music. You can tell that a lot of care and attention has been put into creating a good atmosphere. We were greeted as soon as we entered by our smartly dressed and very polite waiter, who took our drink order and presented us with menus. We were blown away by the amount of choice on the menu. I am a fan of vegetarian Indian food and there was a great selection available.

This is an edited version of the full review, which can be found at virtualhuddersfield.com. Virtual Huddersfield want to encourage real diners to review local places, and will help pay towards the cost of the meal. Just choose a restaurant, get the goahead from virtualhuddersfield.com,

We ate quite early but there were still a reasonable number of other diners. The restaurant is large and the tables are well spread out to give a degree of privacy. For starters we chose a shared Shabab grill - onion pakoras, chicken, lamb and shish kebabs on a bed of deliciously fried onions with side salad and sauces. The meat was so tender and tasty. The dish was a perfect starter and could not have been cooked any better.

enjoy your meal, send in your review and claim £30! So if you would like to review a local restaurant and see your review published on the internet (and possibly in this magazine!), log onto virtualhuddersfield.com and register your interest.

For the main course I opted for a Vegetable and Lamb Jalfrazi. I could not believe the generous amount of meat, tender and cooked to perfection. The fresh herbs complemented it perfectly though I found the dish slightly too oily. In future I would definitely ask for it to be cooked with less oil. My partner chose a Chicken Tikka Balti. Again the amount of meat was very generous. The chicken was perfectly marinated and you could really taste fresh ginger.

Shabab

We had a double garlic naan to accompany our curries, which was fresh and tasty and more than enough for two people. A buffet menu was also available, and was popular with our fellow diners. It offers a variety of main and side dishes at a reasonable price, including a good selection of vegetarian options. The service was friendly and fast although we did not feel hurried in the slightest. The waiter made conversation with us and was keen to know what we thought of the food. The rest rooms were clean and accessible, but the restaurant would be difficult for disabled diners as it is up a flight of stairs. Our meal without drinks was only £16.95. If you eat before 7pm then one main meal is discounted from the bill. We would return to Shabab again as the food was good and the service was excellent. Shabab is definitely worth a visit. Golf This

SPORTING

LIFE

In this, the first of a new series of features on sport, we are delighted to bring you some top golf tips from our local pros, and all the golfing news.

Did you know that there is a driving range, a golf academy and one of the country’s top golf retailers right here in Huddersfield? If not, it’s time you found out! It’s all happening down at the Galpharm these days. The most recent event was the first ever Golf Factor competition - maybe the next Tiger Woods will come from Yorkshire! Over 140 golfers aged from eight to 16 turned up at the John Letters Academy for Stage One of the competition, where they had to hit several shots and impress a panel of three pro judges. After two further stages, ten will go through to the final stage and the chance to win top prizes.

If you’re a bit older than 16 and feel that you could do with some help, here is the Direct Golf pro’s advice.

Improve your putting - get into a routine

All great players have a routine for every shot and when it comes to putting, they know that sticking to a routine is necessary for making consistent strokes. This not only mentally prepares you to hole the putt but physically gets you in the correct position to address the ball and take the stroke. All golfers have different routines, but here are a few suggestions. Look at the putt from behind the ball, halfway down the putting line, behind the hole and from the side. This helps get a clearer picture of the contours and speed of the green. Make a few practice strokes, then strike the ball. To help improve your success rate, make contact with the centre of the putter face, make contact with a square putter face that’s on-line to the target, and finally accelerate the clubhead through impact. Experiment with what works for you then stick to it, and you’ll hole more putts.

Custom fitting your clubs Do you find yourself asking these questions: Why can’t I consistently hit the ball straight? Why do my fingers overlap when I grip the club? Why is my handicap not improving even though I’m playing regular golf and spend time practising? Sometimes it’s not the golfer that is the problem! Clubs handed down through the family, bought as presents or ‘the same as your mate’s’ may not be the best suited to the player.

www.direct-golf.co.uk

HUDDERSFIELD (Leeds Rd) NEW! State of the art Golf Simulator and Vector Golf Fitting Centre.

Manufacturers build clubs to their own standard - there is no generic standard throughout golf. The performance characteristic between different makes and models varies tremendously so professional help is highly recommended. Remember that golfers should use clubs suited to their swing, not change their swing to accommodate ill-suited clubs! Never think you are not good enough to get your clubs custom fitted. Whether you have been playing golf for twenty years, or have just started out, your game will improve through custom fitting. Direct Golf in Huddersfield is one of the few places in the UK with both the Pro Tee Golf Simulator and Tomi Putting System in store, and they are both available by appointment.

in association with

The golf simulator has 200 sensors placed under the striking area just behind the clubface, and a further 300 sensors to collect after-shot data. This means that it can analyse your swing speed and path, club face path and angle at impact, strike position on club face and angle of attack, and the ball spin, side spin, axis spin, ball direction and distance. This is then projected onto the hitting area for you to see, and allows us to offer a complete comprehensive custom fit service, and a total break down of your golf game.

HOW TO

Magazine SPRINGSUMMER 09:Magazine Wint Sprng 09

You told us in our survey that you would like to see more hobby or ‘how to’ features in your Huddersfield Magazine, so we thought we would bring you what you asked for!

e decided that summer is definitely the time for flowers, and we asked Huddersfield Town Centre Partnership member The Posy Bowl to help us out.

W

Beverley Couldwell at The Posy Bowl in Market Walk tells us that many brides these days are opting to buy flowers and make up their own bouquets. “I thought I would demonstrate a nice simple bridal bouquet that’s quick and easy to make” she tells us. “You don’t want to try anything too complicated if you haven’t done a lot of flower arranging!” Beverley says: “The cost for this bouquet will vary according to the time of year. The growers put prices up during wedding season, and white calla lilies become very expensive indeed! That’s why I’ve chosen to use the yellow, as it will help to keep the cost down.” For this arrangement, you will need 6 to 8 yellow calla lilies, matching wide yellow voile ribbon, 3 bunches of steel grass, florist’s tape and decorative pins - these are available with a range of heads to match decoration on the bride’s gown or headdress

1. Bunch the lilies closely together, arranging them to give a nice overall shape, with slight variation in the height.

5. Tape a few at a time onto the lily stems, working your way round until all the stems are disguised.

2. Tape the stems tightly to keep the blooms in place. The tape should be a couple of inches down from the flower head, and wound round several times.

6. Top tip: work the tape downwards so it doesn’t bulk up in one place, and don’t take it too far down - you want the grass to flare loosely at the bottom.

3. Cut the stems quite short - you need enough to be able to handle the bouquet, but not so much that it will break through the steel grass.

7. Cover up the ‘mechanics’ with the voile ribbon. Pin the end securely into the flowers, ensuring that the pin is at an angle and doesn’t stick out the other side.

4. Hold the steel grass upside down, so the tapered ends are facing downwards and trim the tops level.

8. Wind the ribbon round far enough down to cover the tape, then use your decorative pins to make an attractive pattern and secure the end of the ribbon - again taking care to press the pins into, rather than through, the stems.

So now it’s over to you - and The Posy Bowl is always happy to provide the ingredients if you decide to have a go!

It’s Drive Time Toyota Verso

T

he government’s £2,000 ‘scrappage’ trade-in and plenty of opportunities to bargain hard, make this the ideal time to have a look at some of the huge range of vehicles now available from the many car dealerships in and around Huddersfield. With a view to being family-friendly, we have been checking out MPVs - which stands for Multi-Purpose Vehicle by the way, and no, we didn't know that either. We thought it must stand for something like multiple people vehicle, because that’s what most people think of when they look at them. The perfect car for a big family!

>

Citroen Grand C4 Picasso This will give you a quiet and comfortable ride, though it can be a bit bumpy on rougher roads. The interior feels classy while offering excellent safety and good visibility. The rear seats are better suited to children than adults, but that seems to be the case across this class of vehicle. All five of the rear seats fold quickly and easily to give a flat bed for transport, and there is room for a couple of bags even when all the seats are in use. It's also a great looking car.

>

However, there’s more to them than just cramming in the kids for a trip to the seaside, as they all have seats that either come out or fold flat so they can be used as a van as well. We have hunted out what we think are the best five that are available from dealers in our town. They all have strengths and weaknesses, so it’s up to you to choose the one that best suits your priorities.

>

Ford S-Max A very quiet ride, and much bigger than many comparable models. Some can be expensive to run, but the diesels are economical. Good control and plenty of safety and security features make this a safe option, though the interior is the most conventional of our choices. This is a solidly-built car with excellent visibility, and plenty of storage space - even when all the seats are up. When they are folded flat, the boot is huge.

Citroen Grand C4 Picasso

>

Toyota Verso Toyotas are famously reliable, but perhaps not what you would choose for glamour. This one is no exception, and it can be noisy both accelerating and at speed. However, this is offset by a five-star crash test rating, and a seating system that's spacious and easy to use. The vehicle is competitively priced, with a decent range of standard equipment, and an optional in-car entertainment system with a DVD player and headrest mounted screens.

>

Vauxhall Zafira This one is really roomy for its size, and comes with a goodsized boot. Again, though, you would really only want to put children in the rear seats. It's great to drive, with excellent handling, not too much noise and a clear dashboard layout. Safety is a really strong point in the Zafira - it's another with a five-star crash test rating - and the running costs are reasonable for the type.

Volkswagen Touran The last of our five, though not necessarily the least, the Touran benefits from Volkswagen's strong reputation. You would tend to describe this vehicle as sensible, rather than startlingly stylish, but it does the job it's there for. It has plenty of room for seating or for transport, with folding seats, and it probably handles best of the five. The tough interior should stand up well to being battered by the kids, too.

Vauxhall Zafira

So whether you are looking for comfort or convenience, and durability or stylish good looks, there is something out there to suit - and with these great cars, you won’t have to sacrifice one for the other.

Life

Shepley and Shelley Whatever your interests, from sports and social events to music, dance and drama, discovering the pleasures of gardening or exploring the great outdoors on your doorstep, village life in Shepley and Shelley is positively thriving.

he impressive array of leisure activities across all age groups owes much to the tireless efforts of grassroots community organisations striving constantly, year in, year out to maintain a strong community spirit in the two neighbouring areas.

T

Both settlements have existed for over 1,000 years and are mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. Their names translated from the original Anglo-Saxon reveal Shepley was ‘a clearing where sheep are kept’ while Shelley is ‘a clearing on the shelf’ or as we would say today, ‘terrace’. Half a dozen miles or so from town, heading out beyond Kirkburton towards Sheffield, seems a world away from the hassles of finding somewhere to park and those snake-like queues for the checkout tills. Village traders go ‘the extra mile’ in the best possible way, offering helpful advice and giving customers the benefit of their professional expertise or specialist knowledge. >

Shepley and Shelley’s staunchly independent shops and services are a breath of fresh air in every sense and the same can be said about the excellent choice of pubs and restaurants close by, serving fine wines, beers and mouthwatering meals. In recent years the Shepley Spring Festival has helped to put the area on the map. The mid-May weekend celebrating the very best of traditional music, song and dance has its own camp site adjacent to the showground which is a boon for visitors who travel far and wide to enjoy the festival’s unique atmosphere. As well as the headline concerts by leading folk, roots and acoustic artists, there are many other side attractions such as children’s story sessions, street theatre and craft stalls. More information including dates for 2010 at www.shepleyspringfestival.com Shepley Spring is also the village’s most famous export - its mineral water, which was first discovered a century ago. Eastfield Mills is home to one of the UK’s leading bottlers and distributors of branded and speciality water, including Ice Valley, which is currently one of the country’s fastest growing brands. Long ago, Shepley could boast another well known name in the thirst-quenching business - but for Seth Senior & Sons, water was just one of several ingredients used in brewing beer. Legends has it that Senior started with a single sovereign, hence the name of the pub at the top end of Shepley, which also housed the brewery. At one time, the family owned several pubs in the area.

21/5/09

08:25

Page 37

Football and cricket enjoy a loyal following in both villages. Shepley can also boast its own tennis, bowling and croquet clubs, the latter was apparently born out of frustration – the men of Shepley were said to be spending too long at the bowling club and so the women set up the croquet club next door. For more gems of local history go to www.ckcricketheritage.org.uk and search for ‘Shepley’ or ‘Shelley’ via the South Kirklees link.

Shelley is also home to Armitage’s renowned Pennine Garden Centre - a great place to take the children and to get them interested in gardening. Learning where so much of our food is produced can also encourage them to eat more healthily.

The hub of community life in Shelley is the award-winning village hall - recently it became only the third hall in Yorkshire to receive the ACRE Hallmark 1, which recognises excellent management.

Sunday 14 June: The annual Pennine Tractor Charity Road Run from Shepley, 10am-4pm

Regular activities here include Shelley Over 60s Club, a playgroup five mornings a week, a modern sequence dancing club, Cub Scouts and Beaver Scouts, line dancing classes, the Thursday Club, a very successful Bridge Club, Pierrot Players amateur dramatic society and numerous social events run by the association as well as private parties. Post Office services are now based at the hall, replacing the previous village post office which closed last October when the sub post-master retired. The go-ahead for the new outreach service the first in West Yorkshire - followed more than six months’ hard work by the Shelley Community Association, Village Hall Committee and Kirkburton Parish Council.

Summer is an ideal time to plan a visit to Shepley and Shelley with several dates for your diary including:

Tuesday 23 June: Shepley Band Summer Concert at The Abbey, The Knowle, Shepley, 7.30pm Sunday 12 July: Shelley Gala at Shelley First School, 1.30pm to 4.30pm Sunday 19 July: Shelley Garden Festival - tickets £5 from local retailers and from the village hall or open gardens on the day. More information: phone Ann on 01484 604486 or Malcolm 01484 609032. Shepley is served by regular trains to and from Huddersfield and Sheffield and there are also regular bus services linking Shepley and Shelley

By way of a contrast, the villagers of Shelley were renowned for making rugs Tumble Twist rugs, to be precise - and corsets. The Shelley Dreadnought was a seamless handwoven corset which came with the following advice: ‘Please don’t wear one pair above three years’. Another claim to fame is that John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist Church visited Shelley in 1788, on one of his journeys through the North of England. He preached from the pulpit of the village’s Wesleyan chapel which had been built three years earlier.

Emley Village Trail There is a small car park in the centre of the village near the Post Office and public transport to Emley from local towns. Starting point: the Stone Cross by the village car park. Emley was granted a royal charter in 1253 to hold weekly markets. The Stone Cross in the centre of the village is the remains of the market cross, the upper part of which was destroyed during the civil war. Leaving the white stone cross behind you, turn and walk down Church Street passing St Michael’s Church on the left. Note the cross in the church yard wall by the war memorial. This was the symbol of the Knights Hospitalers of Wakefield who owned much of the land around Emley. The aim of this ancient monastic order was to care for the sick and to raise funds to protect the pilgrims in the Holy Land during the Crusades. The cross was removed from a cottage which stood near the former Co-operative store (now the village store) Turn right onto School Lane and walk past Emley First School on your left until you reach Rodley lane. Follow the lane for about 150 metres then bear right onto Thorncliffe Lane. Pass Thorncliffe farm on your right and just past the farm, climb over the stone and wooden stile in the wall on your right.

22/5/09

07:28

Page 38

Thorncliffe Lane is a very old road and used to be stone flagged and was the main road from Emley to Wakefield. Follow the hedgerow on your right for 200 metres and cross a wooden stile. Continue to follow the hedge and wall on your right until you meet a stile down the bank. Cross here, then turn immediately left over the stile by the gate, and follow the hedge on your left up to and over the next stile. You cannot see the next stile yet so, if the mast is visible, point the number 6 of your watch at the mast and then walk in the direction of 12 on your watch (east) towards the bottom right hand corner of the field. As you walk across the field you will see the huge remains of ancient bell pits on your left (now fenced off) Iron ore was mined in these pits from a ‘black band’ of ore known as the Tankersley Seam which ran through local coal seams. Iron was mined and processed by the monks in Emley long before the industry became important in the Sheffield area. Once melted down using charcoal from local woods, iron ingots were taken by packhorse through Midgley to the river Calder to go to Selby or York. Continue across the fields for 300 metres or so, until you find a gate and wooden stile just left of the clump of holly trees. Through the stile keep the wooden fence on your right and continue walking straight ahead for 150 metres to the next stile at the bottom of the field. Do not turn right or climb over this stile, but turn left and follow the fence.

This section of path is part of the ‘Kirklees Way’ long distance footpath which now runs for 72 miles around Kirklees District. The wide open fields in this area were open cast mined for coal and restored in the 1960s as were Bank Woods over to the right which were replanted with conifers. The open farmland here is ideal for some species of bird, and if you look and listen as you go, you are likely to hear skylard and lapwing and maybe curlew if you are lucky! Follow the fence and hedge on your right over 2 stiles bringing you onto the bottom of Leisure Lane. For full details of this walk and others in the Kirklees area visit: www.kirklees.gov.uk/leisure or call in at the Tourist Information Centre Map and walk courtesy of Kirklees Council Countryside Unit.

Stunning Summer Beauty S

ummer’s here and thoughts turn to sun kissed beaches, faraway lands and long lazy days with a cool cocktail at your side.

If you’re planning a summer get away, or even just relaxing at home, you’ll want to make the best of yourself ready for the beach, nights out or just chilling with friends. Now is the time to make your summer beauty preparations and think about your hair, skin and nails, all finished off with a stunning white smile. If you’re thinking of getting a cut and colour before your holiday, then you need to think well in advance and perhaps get some help and advice from your local hair salon. Have a chat to your stylist and see what he or she recommends for summer hair care, particularly if you have coloured hair. Your salon will be able to advise you on the best products to make the most of your hair in the sun, sea and sand. It’s also a good idea to have a cut and colour at least a couple of weeks before you travel to give yourself time to adjust to a new style and new look. To ensure your nails look great in summer, enlist the help of a nail specialist who can advise on the different options available, whether your want a simple French Manicure or more elaborate nail art etc. Again, give yourself time to adjust to your chosen style and remember you will need to return to your nail salon on a regular basis to maintain your well manicured look. >

The long established centre in New Street now has even more to offer its members with the introduction of new holistic health care treatments, a dietary/slimming programme and yoga classes. Many local women have already discovered the health and fitness benefits of joining Gymophobics, a unique ladies-only facility which changes lives and fits into even the busiest schedules, taking only 30 minutes two or three times a week. Now the Huddersfield centre is leading the way by introducing much more for members to enjoy. A new upstairs health suite is now open, offering a range of alternative treatments including Reiki, Indian Head Massage, Reflexology, Aromatherapy and much more under the guidance of the centre’s new manager Gena Wilkinson. The new holistic treatments are collectively called Body Essence and are tailored to suit individual requirements, aiming to improve well-being and allowing the body to utilise its own natural healing processes. She said: “Here in Huddersfield we are also pioneering a new dietary programme called 54321 which has been especially created to complement the Gymophobics workout regime and help members to eat healthily and lose weight. A new yoga class is being introduced and we will be holding many more social events for members starting with a regular open evening featuring a different topic each month.’’ Gymophobics in Huddersfield has several hundred members and is one of the local area’s most popular gyms. It works by using an exercise circuit to tone, firm, shape and strengthen the body which enjoys remarkable results in a relatively short time. It also improves posture and confidence. Huddersfield is one of the busiest Gymophobics centre in the UK and members enjoy fabulous results. Across the rest of the UK there are nearly 40 similar centres.

Why not see how Gymophobics can change your life for the better? Join today and reap the rewards whatever your age. Membership details are available by ringing: 01484 423141.

Dental Implants your questions

answered by Huddersfield Dentist Dr Robin Warne ental implants – your questions answered by Huddersfield dentist Dr Robin Warne. During the last 30 years or so the use of dental implants has changed dentistry beyond recognition. Twenty years ago very few people knew anything about implants in the UK. In countries such as Sweden and Switzerland implants have been important for many years and 10 times as many patients have dental implants in these countries as do Britons in the UK.Over the last five years more and more people in the UK have become aware of the importance of dental implants and today most people have heard about them but what are they? Dr Robin Warne from Huddersfield Dental Implants & Cosmetics explains more:

D

What are dental implants? Implants are artificial roots placed in your jaws to allow new teeth to be fitted. They can replace single teeth or multiple teeth right up to full sets with the new teeth being permanently fixed in place similarly to your own teeth. Another option for their use is to help retain loose dentures. Whichever option is the most appropriate for you they have one thing in common: they are life changing. They are made from titanium which is accepted by your own body as itself. Other materials have been used but these are not well researched and may not be suitable in the long term. The success rates of modern titanium implants is fantastic. Dr Robin Warne gains a patient’s trust whilst discussing every treatment option available

Do I need an implant? Have you got missing teeth? Then implants may be right for you! The obvious cases are those where a single front tooth is missing. Everyone wants a replacement tooth for there, but what about back teeth? Are they important? “Well yes” says Robin, “If a tooth is missing further back in the mouth a lot of people say ‘oh it doesn’t matter I can’t see it’, but it’s more important than that. “I agree a back tooth might not be visible but its function, not beauty, we are talking about. “If we loose a tooth the tooth behind it tilts into the space and the opposite tooth over grows leading to a poor bite. This in turn overloads the teeth on the other side of your mouth and in turn this side fails also. “The end result often is that we then overload the front teeth and they either become loose, wear down greatly or push forwards, all of which are outcomes that need further treatment. “So why not look at replacing those missing teeth before the years roll by doing irreparable damage. By the time most of us realise there is a problem many years have passed and a lot of the damage may have been done. That is not to say that it is too late, it’s just that a better job could have been done earlier.’’ What are the advantages? As we talked about earlier they stop further deterioration of the remaining teeth by supporting them in function. If you have all the spaces filled, the loading on any individual tooth is reduced. They help prevent the bone from shrinking, which the bone does when there is no tooth to stimulate it. In fact dentures are the fastest way to loose bone, they actually cause the bone to shrink. Implants don’t need to attach to other teeth so unlike bridges they can be placed almost anywhere, they do not involve cutting away a tooth either, unlike a bridge. The success rate of an implant over 10 to 15 years is up to six times higher than that of a simple bridge so ideally we should place implants not bridges.

I have full dentures, what are my options? There are basically three common options, the first is to secure a loose denture with two standard or four mini implants, this will hold the denture firmly in place but still allows some minute movement. Secondly a bar can be constructed on four implants and this can support an over denture absolutely rigid, these are not like the old round bars. And finally teeth can be fixed in place to make a permanent bridge. Why should I go to Huddersfield Dental Implants and Cosmetics for my implant treatment? It is important that what may be a once in a life time treatment should be done to the best standards. Dr Robin Warne has trained in seven European countries and the USA and is one of the few dentists to hold a masters degree in implantology which he achieved three years ago. He is passionate about perfection and will not accept second best. How to make an appointment to see Robin. It’s simple, just call the practice on 01484 537222, call in while passing or e-mail implants@hdic.co.uk and we will make you an appointment to improve your life.

I have a few teeth missing, do I need an implant for every tooth? No you don’t necessarily need an implant for each missing tooth. It is quite possible to replace all the teeth in one arch with only four implants. The implants support a full bridge.
