Mrs Sunderland Music Festival DISCOVER

Friday 19 February to Saturday 27 February Huddersfield Town Hall

Come along and join the audience at one of the country’s most prestigious festivals. The Mrs Sunderland Music Festival started with Susan Sunderland (nee Sykes) who was a famous soprano soloist, born in Brighouse, near Huddersfield, in 1819. She was a founder member of the Huddersfield Choral Society for whom she also sang as a soloist. The accolade "The Yorkshire Queen of Song" followed a visit to London to sing for Queen Victoria. The Queen is said to have told her "I may be the Queen of England, but you are the Queen of Song". The Festival started with money raised from the Golden Wedding concert 1888, held in her honour. A committee of distinguished local men decided to start a Vocal Solo Competition to be held in Huddersfield and named as a tribute to this great Yorkshire soprano. It was initially for singers but later expanded to include pianists alternating annually with violinists. The first "Mrs Sunderland" was

■ LAST YEAR : Young Musician of The Year Winner, Flautist, Sarah Bennett

held in April 1889 with 37 competitors - 27 lady singers and 10 pianists; Mrs Sunderland herself presented the prizes. A

choral class was introduced in 1895. The festival has taken place every year since except in 1940, the first year of World War II. Since its modest beginnings, the festival has expanded vastly so that it now covers nine days. As well as an extensive range of vocal solo classes, there are classes for adult and junior choirs, piano, brass, woodwind, recorder, strings and percussion, as well as school orchestras and bands. There is also a Speech and Drama section which includes solo verse-speaking, prepared reading, solo and group dramatic classes and poetry-writing. It is affiliated to the British & International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech. Join us in February 2010: pay on the door £1-£3 for morning, afternoon and evening sessions. Reserve your seat for the renowned Gala Evening – compered by Dr Gordon Stewart – on Saturday 27 February at 7pm. Tickets available from the Visitor Information Centre in Huddersfield Library, tel: 01484 223200 or at the Town Hall box office on the night.

Huddersfield will host The British Juggling Convention – BJC 2010 This exciting international festival takes place every year at different locations across the UK and every year it is organised by a different performance group operating out of the host town or city. It is the second largest convention of it's type in the world (second only to the European Juggling Convention) and attracts a multinational patron base, as well as world renowned circus performers. The first BJC was held in 1988 in London at the Columbo Street Sports Centre; organised by Phillip Maxwell-Stewart (better known as Max Oddball) and has been operating on a yearly basis ever since. It has been held in most major cities across the UK including Manchester, Leeds, Cardiff, Nottingham, Edinburgh and Birmingham. Every year there are activities held throughout the duration of the convention including on-site workshops hosted by professionals in the industry from 3 diabolo basics to 5 ball trick swap as well as special interest workshops like nail-up-the-nose and whip cracking. This year the British Juggling Convention (BJC) is being held right here in Huddersfield, at the Huddersfield New College site. It is taking place from the 7th to the 11th of April 2010 and is being organised by Kaotik Arts Ltd, a local circus performance group. This year they will also be joined by the BBMC - British Balloon Modelling Convention and also BYJOTY - British Young Juggler of the Year, which will be hosted at BJC2010.

Kaotik Arts was established by Stacie Murphy 3 years ago as a not for profit organisation providing a platform for young people and performers to come together to collaborate on projects and share skills. Kaotik Arts has been closely involved with Kirklees Council over the years and has been involved in the Fire in the Sky Festival and Imbolc Fire Festival. Some of the activities taking place this year will be: Renegades – an open stage night where people can premier new routines or perform one off tricks and silly stunts; Traders in circus equipment and clothing from the four corners of Great Britain will have stalls to sell their wares and Unicycle Trials, organised by J.U.S.T. The trials will be taking place on site, with the finals being held in St Georges Square on Saturday 10 April alongside the Juggling Olympics. The Juggling Olympics will happen in the town centre in St Georges Square and is primarily a showcase for the public. It’s a fun opportunity for people to compete in good natured competitions ranging from diobolo high throwing to long distance egg passing with the emphasis on fun as well as skill. To top it all some world renowned performers have been booked for a once in a lifetime show to be held in Huddersfield Town Hall on Saturday 10 April 2010. For more information please visit our website at www.bjc2010.co.uk or join us on Facebook by searching for British Juggling Convention 2010.
