Family Learning Festival 2010 This year’s Family Learning Festival encourages families to join events taking place at Library and Information Centres across Kirklees celebrating family learning. The national theme this year is “Be brilliant” – aiming to make participants feel differently about the world around them and their own potential – “So go on……be brilliant”. Kirklees Library and Information Centres will be joining in the celebrations for the Festival with a range of activities for families throughout the fortnight in October. Taking up the “be brilliant” theme, the activities will include “brilliant bling” craft sessions – making jewellery and accessories for all ages out of recycled materials, paper, buttons, beads and threads and “be brilliant, get planting” activity sessions to include bulb
planting and compost making, giving lots of opportunities for intergenerational fun and learning. Storytimes during the festival will have a gardening theme too. All events will be free and there will be no need to book unless otherwise stated. Look out nearer the time for event details on the Kirklees website and publicity at your local Library and Information Centre. There will also be some events to tie in with the annual Big Draw Campaign which runs from 1- 31 October. The Campaign for Drawing has one aim: to get everyone drawing! Why? Drawing helps us to think, invent and communicate – regardless of age and ability. The campaign took its initial inspiration from the visionary Victorian artist and writer, John Ruskin.

Gordon Stewart
From Verdi and Handel to the UK première of a major choral work by the acclaimed composer Jonathan Harvey, Huddersfield Choral Society’s programmes this year span four centuries of great music as it celebrates its 175th anniversary in 2010/11. On October 29 2010 the Society is delighted to be working with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and their charismatic conductor Vasily Petrenko. Verdi's setting of the Requiem is one of the greatest choral masterpieces of all time. Charged with electric passion, terrifying force, vigorous rhythms, sublime melodies, tenderness and tranquillity, it comes straight from Verdi's soul. The concert will be recorded for broadcast by Classic FM. Founded in 1836, Huddersfield Choral
Society has an international reputation as the UK's leading choral society, producing a unique and thrilling full-bodied ‘Huddersfield Sound’ from over 200 voices. The repertoire includes both oratorio and religious music, contemporary and commissioned works. The Society's busy schedule is centred on its own subscription concert season in Huddersfield Town Hall, including of course annual performances of Messiah. The choir also visits other major concert halls in the UK and abroad, regularly broadcasts for BBC radio and television, and has a long history of pioneering recordings. The Society's Junior Choirs were formed in 1986 and so will celebrate their 25th anniversary season alongside the Choral's 175th. Find out more - http://www.huddersfieldchoralsociety.com

Shall we Essentially Dance? A wave of enthusiasm for Latin American and ballroom-style dance has hit Kirklees as older people and children take to the floor in their hundreds to try out the jive, cha cha cha, waltz and quickstep in the Essentially Dance initiative. Kirklees Council and NHS Kirklees in partnership with Essentially Dance have offered training to all schools and colleges in Kirklees and to volunteers and workers in older people’s groups. So far more than 120 teachers and 20 people working with older people have taken part in the training and in all nearly 4000 people are trying out the steps. A programme of weekly classes and tea dances are now on offer to those who wish to learn the steps and try it out – see advert on page XX for details of the next dances. Schools and colleges have also been enthusiastically including Latin American and ballroom dance in PE lessons and after-school clubs. One of the people taking part in one of the first tea dances said, “It was magical just being able to have a waltz and it was great to see so many people joining in”. Another said,” “I have had 2 knee replacements and I am so happy that I have managed to have a dance.
This was my first dance in a very long time.“ Hundreds of schoolchildren and older people took to the dance floor at Huddersfield Town Hall with Strictly Come Dancing’s Darren Bennett and Lilia Kopylova in a celebration to mark the end of the first year of the hugely ambitious two year Essentially Dance programme to get both older and younger people dancing. Leader of the Council, Cllr Mehboob Khan said,” The Essentially Dance event was a fabulous day and a real celebration of the Essentially Dance programme in Kirklees. It is clear that Latin American and ballroom dance is very popular, good fun and a great way for people to keep active, whatever their age.” Places on the Essentially Dance training courses are still available – ideal for those working with older people who are keen to introduce dance into residential settings, sheltered housing, community groups and centres or luncheon clubs or similar.
