MEND helps families unravel food labels Families trying to MEND their ways put what they had learned about food labels into practise on a supermarket tour. Youngsters and their parents/carers spent time reading the nutrition information on various food packaging to find out their salt, sugar and calories content. Learning to understand food labels and how to decide if a food is healthy or not, is part of the national healthy living programme MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition...Do It!) which is delivered locally by Kirklees Council in partnership with NHS Kirklees. MEND is aimed at 7-13 year olds and their families with the purpose of getting them to adopt a healthier lifestyle. It is run in 10-week cycles and involves children, accompanied by parents/carers, attending twice-weekly sessions that incorporate physical activity and education about diet. The sessions are free for families taking part. Over the last two years, nearly 240 Kirklees families have been through the MEND programme.

Adult Learners’ Week

A new all-weather Crown Green Bowling facility at Leeds Road Sports Complex in Huddersfield will be opening after Easter. Sessions will be hourly and cost £2.50 for adults and £1.25 for juniors. Bowlers will be able to enjoy the sport all year round thanks to an ‘air-dome’ structure with internal flood-lighting that protects the green and the bowlers from the elements. The new green (37 metres square) is built on the former crown green bowling site at the Leeds Road Sports Complex and is of a

very high standard. The combination of an inflatable dome, bowling surface and crown green make this facility unique in the country. Competitions and matches will be held at the venue and there will be opportunities for practice and 'friendlies'. The new complex will be open to the public from April 6 at 9.30am. For more information contact Phil Bates, Operations Manager, Leeds Road Sports Complex on 01484 223178 Email; phil.bates@kirklees.gov.uk

Holmfirth Film Festival

Holmfirth - the Hollywood of the Holme Valley is set to launch its premiere Film Festival from 22nd – 29th May 2010 by highlighting the historical role the area has played in the development of film. With a red-carpet opening and guest star appearances, the festival plans to acknowledge Holmfirth’s important historical position in film-making by planning a major event centred on the contribution made by Bamforth Films of Holmfirth with film shows, talks and exhibitions. With the Festival’s northern flavour, it hopes to showcase the talents of actors, writers and directors from the area which will be centered on the town’s historic Picturedrome. Barry Norman, one of the most renowned film critics and the former presenter of Film BBC, will be interviewed by Tony Earnshaw, Head of Film Programming at the National Media Museum. Barry Norman will be the introducing his favourite films and will host a question and answer session on the 27th May at the Picturedrome. The Festival will feature a day dedicated to Huddersfield’s own Hollywood star, James Mason, and, among other highlights, the author David Peace will be interviewed by the Creative Director at the Show Room in Sheffield. He will also read from his books including The Damned

United and GB84 about the Miners’ Strike. Films from Holmfirth’s past will be shown in village halls in the Valley. There will be a children’s film event as well as a secret outdoor cinema showing. The Festival will be showing some of the latest award-winning foreign films, and to end the Festival will be a film-themed ball. The Holmfirth Film Festival, generously supported by the South Pennine Leader Project, has organised a major short film competition which aims to depict Holmfirth and the Holme Valley in a new light. Although Holmfirth is famous for the longest running sitcom, The Last of the Summer Wine, the festival is keen for film-makers to go beyond these stereotypes with the theme - Beyond the Summer Wine. The films will be inspired by the outstanding landscape of the area and will show a fresh look at Holmfirth and the Holme Valley. Huddersfield University’s School of Music students and lecturers, past and present, will be composing soundtracks for silent films for a special music night. Other tutors will be giving free lectures and film shows in the afternoons. Tickets will be available from the Holmfirth Picturedrome or for more details, visit www.holmfirthfilmfestival.co.uk
