Kirklees Concert Season 2009/10

at Huddersfield and Dewsbury Town Halls The new season kicks off with its opening concert on 17 September at Huddersfield Town Hall. This season's 'musical masterpieces' includes a total of 35 concerts for you to enjoy, including orchestral, organ and lunchtime chamber concerts. You can look forward to some of the best-loved classical music, with highlights including The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, The Classic FM Concert, Viennese Whirl, The Planets and much, much more! At the heart of the season is our resident ensemble, the Orchestra of Opera North who continue to bring us conductors and soloists of international standing whilst maintaining our commitment to developing the talents of the next generation of artists, and our association with the region’s great orchestras remains strong, with the BBC Philharmonic, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and the Northern Sinfonia all appearing. Key to the success of the season is our loyal and supportive audience, so we’re delighted that many of the faces in this year's brochure are those of people who attend our concerts. Working in partnership with Kirklees Council and the Orchestra of Opera North is design agency, Andrassy Design, who have produced the publi-

city for the Kirklees Concert Season for a number of years now. With yet another original and creative campaign this year, Andrassy Design’s office on New North Road became a photography studio for the day as a dozen or more concert season fans of all ages filed through the doors to be photographed clutching pictures of their favourite concerts, suitably framed as works of art - ‘Musical Masterpieces’ as the campaign headline puts it. The tables were turned as the audience members became the ‘stars’ of

the campaign. “The diversity of volunteers showed just how broad a range of people enjoy the seasons’ concerts, which was of course part of our intention. We also wanted to reflect how much the Orchestra of Opera North and Kirklees Council value and appreciate their audience here in Kirklees,” commented David Andrassy. Buggyfit is the ultimate fitness class for new mums wanting to get back into shape after their new arrival. It provides safe exercise for new mums without the need for babysitters or crèches - because baby comes too. And as well as helping new mums start to re-tone their bodies after childbirth, it also provides a valuable source of support and a chance to make new friends. Buggyfit is based around walking with buggies. But included in the hour-long class are simple exercises - such as squats, leg-lifts and stretches - which are all aimed at strengthening the muscles weakened through pregnancy, improving posture and burning fat. Sessions, which are also suitable

for pregnant women, are taken by a qualified instructor. Buggyfit sessions are currently running at Wilton Park, Batley, every Tuesday, starting at 11am (brunch served at Carlinghow and Wilton Surestart Centre from 10 am), and The Annie Smith Children’s Centre, Halifax Old Road, Birkby, Huddersfield, every Thursday, from 1pm. A new weekly session started at Thornhill Children’s Centre, Edge Top, Thornhill, Dewsbury, on Tuesday, June 30, at 11.15am. And from July 1, there has been a regular Wednesday session at Crow Nest Park, Dewsbury, starting at 1pm from outside the park café or meet at Dewsbury Moor and Scout H i l l C h i l d r e n ’s C e n t r e a t 12.30pm.

The 18th Marsden Jazz Festival 9-11 October 2009

We are thrilled to welcome you with a packed programme for the eighteenth annual Marsden Jazz Festival. We have hand-picked a fine selection of music from right across the spectrum of jazz for new and seasoned jazz fans alike. This year’s programme is bulging with new bands and sounds alongside firm festival favourites. Marsden Jazz Festival is a crossing point for musicians regionally, nationally and internationally and the perfect place for new and established jazz audiences to listen to something familiar or something totally different. This year, as well as our regular headline concert series, we are bringing you a new stream of bands. We want to introduce you to new jazz music and delight, enthral or chal-

lenge your ears, so the new stream gigs are priced to entice. Catch these rising stars in intimate surroundings while you can! New to Marsden Jazz Festival this year are events especially for young people and family audiences at the Standedge Tunnel Visitor centre. As in previous years, the majority of gigs at Marsden Jazz Festival are presented free of charge thanks to the generous support of the hosting venues – please raise a glass to them! Marsden Jazz Festival would not be possible without a dedicated band of volunteers to plan and run the festival year-round and help out on the weekend itself. If you want to get involved, contact the festival office on 01484 846969 or mjfoffice@tiscali.co.uk to find out more.
