SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER

W H AT ’ S O N

Be Curious, Be Amazed, Be Inspired! What connects Teddy Boys and the Brontë sisters? What does a Valveless Car and an LS Lowry painting have in common? How are 17th century four poster beds and Egyptian mummies linked? Any idea what a Knurr & Spell is? The answer – they can all be found in the magnificent museums and galleries across Kirklees and most can be visited for free! Across Kirklees we have six museums, two with glorious gardens to wander around as well as art galleries in Batley and Huddersfield too. There’s something for everyone and for every taste. Take a journey around the region starting at the north of the borough at Oakwell Hall and Country Park, an Elizabethan manor house which featured as Fieldhead in Charlotte Brontë’s novel Shirley. Set out as it would have been in the 1690s, you’ll find authentic furnishings from intricately carved four poster beds to kitchen pots and cooking utensils. The Hall has its own beautiful gardens and sits in over 100 acres of award winning, well managed Country Park offering visitors the chance to unwind in tranquil settings. At nearby Gomersal, you’ll find Red House & Gardens, a delightful 1830s cloth merchant’s home which also boasts fascinating Brontë connections. Here you can relive schooldays, Teddy Boys, dance marathons and street parties through the mementoes of local residents in Spen Valley Stories Gallery. Don’t forget to visit the beautiful Red House gardens whilst you are there too! Over in Batley at Wilton Park visit Bagshaw Museum, discover what is was like to be an Irish immigrant to Batley in the 1850s, sit on a double-seater outside loo, meet a spiky puffer fish, and listen to Shirley Bassey at Batley Varieties Club! Bagshaw’s dramatic and atmospheric ‘King of Osiris’ Gallery gives visitors a unique glimpse into the ancient Egyptian way of life and death. Revisit your childhood at Dewsbury Museum’s popular toy gallery and 1940s classroom. The oldest museum in Kirklees housed in a stunning historic mansion, learn about Dewsbury’s proud history including the town’s foundations and how

it has developed, along with its triumphs and tragedies. Find out more about the people who have made Dewsbury their home at this wonderful museum. Whilst you’re in the area, why not call into the Dewsbury Art Gallery based in the stunning Carnegie Library? The gallery hosts a changing display of artwork by local art groups and artists and is home to the annual exhibitions from Dewsbury Art Group and Batley & District Camera Club. Moving towards Huddersfield, Tolson Museum at Ravensknowle Park has permanent displays and galleries featuring transport with a fantastic David Brown Valveless Car, made locally. Other displays included reflect the town’s rich tradition of textiles, fascinating archaeology and the history of the people of Huddersfield from prehistoric times to the present day. Toys, dolls and children’s playthings can also be found at Tolson – see what the popular Knurr and Spell game involved. Before you leave Tolson, find out more about Castle Hill and Victoria Tower at nearby Almondbury. Travel up to the ancient monument site to take in the spectacular views from 900 feet above sea level! Slightly less windswept than Castle Hill call into Huddersfield Art Gallery. An extensive and stunning collection of paintings, drawings and sculptures by internationally renowned artists can all be viewed in the town centre gallery alongside works from contemporary local artists. With lots of events and activities taking place across all our museums and galleries all year round, there’s bound to be something to prick your curiosity, be amazed by and inspire you to

visit us again and again! Admission to Red House & Gardens and Oakwell Hall starts from just £1 for children and £2.50 for adults. Family tickets are also available. Tickets offering unlimited entry to both venues for a whole year are just £14.50 for up to a family of 6. Our other museums and galleries are free of charge to visit. Between 1 October to 28 February museum winter opening times are: Monday – closed

England vs Ireland in Rugby League World Cup 2013 England will play Ireland at The John Smith’s Stadium in H u d d e rs f i e l d i n t h e o n l y guaranteed England game in the tournament next Autumn. Plans are now being made to develop sustainable rugby league opportunities for children and adults across the district during the build up to the tournament and after. The council is working with community clubs as well as Huddersfield Giants, Batley Bulldogs, Dewsbury RAMS, Kirklees Active Leisure and West Yorkshire Sport so that Kirklees as a whole can benefit from being

involved in the tournament. Huddersfield is the birthplace of rugby league and it is fitting that the district will host the highest level matches in the sport which should inspire and enthuse people of all ages to get involved in the game. Hosting a match offers Kirklees a unique opportunity to celebrate the heritage of the game but also to build and develop the game even further involving more schools and communities so that the sport continues to grow and flourish in the future. Kirklees Concert Season 2012/13

The 2012/13 season celebrates the tenth year of the groundbreaking partnership between Kirklees Council and Opera North, a partnership that has, since 2003, delivered an amazing range of musical performances of the highest quality for the people of Kirklees. We are delighted that this partnership continues to go from strength to strength. As ever our resident ensemble, the Orchestra of Opera North, is at the heart of the orchestral season and we are celebrating the past decade of concerts by inviting some of our most popular conductors and soloists to join us alongside some very exciting new faces. A highlight of the celebration will be the performance of Mahler’s monumental Sixth Symphony - one of the biggest works ever played in the season – so big we will have to extend the stage! The excellent relationship with Classic FM, the UK’s biggest classical music radio station, is now well established and once again you will find four concerts that we think make the ideal introduction to the excitement and power of great classical music. If you have never tried one of these before, these ‘Recommended by Classic FM’ concerts are a perfect place to start; if you come already, how about bringing your friends? Completing our line-up we are delighted to be joined by the wonderful musicians of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Northern Sinfonia, who have become such favourites with our audiences for their fabulous performances. The organ and lunchtime chamber concerts continue to delight large audiences with the breadth and accessibility of the music and artists on show, including Cantabile who have long been recognised as one of the UK’s great

Celebrate the Paralympic Flame

Kirklees will host the Paralympic Flame at the Kirklees Youth Games Flame Celebration at Leeds Road Sports Complex on Friday 24 August with a free family sports and activities afternoon which will finish with a closing ceremony as the Lantern containing the Paralympic Flame arrives in Huddersfield. Sports and activities will take place from 12noon with the Lantern expected to arrive at approximately 3.30pm. Children and young people can enjoy trying out sports such as archery, fencing, curling, bowling as well as wheelchair rugby and wheelchair basketball and more unusual activities such as zorbing and battax walls. All activities are suitable for those aged seven years and over. Other things to do will include garden games such as giant jenga, connect 4, as well as Nordic Walking, golf, boccia, dance and football. Cllr Masood Ahmed said, “We are delighted that Huddersfield has been chosen as one of 33 communities that will host events to celebrate the Paralympic Flame. It is a great honour and we want families to come and enjoy our celebration and are particularly keen to encourage children with a disability or sensory impairment to join in the fun. “We are holding the event at Leeds Road Sports Complex which means that

whatever the weather the event can still go ahead as we have great indoor and outdoor facilities there.” Kirklees Council event organisers are asking people to book their places for the afternoon sports and activities so that they can plan for the appropriate number of coaches, volunteers and activities. Bookings can be made by emailing sport.development@kirklees.gov.uk or by contacting 01484 234098. Those who just want to see the Paralympic Flame celebration at the end of the afternoon do not need to book in advance. The Kirklees Youth Games Flame Celebration is the final festival in a series which will take place each week during the holidays. Each Kirklees Youth Games Festival takes place from 1-4pm and is a free afternoon of inclusive sports and games including tennis, archery, football, cricket and more for young people aged 8-16 years. They take place on Friday 27 July at Neilly Fields in Honley, on Friday 3 August at Wilton Park in Batley, on Friday 10 August at the Showground in Mirfield and on Friday 17 August at Greenhead Park in Huddersfield.
