Olympic Torch Relay Kirklees Welcomes the Olympic Torch to Huddersfield, Batley and Dewsbury The Olympic Torch arrives in Huddersfield just over halfway through its 70 day, 8000 mile trip around the UK before it arrives at the Olympic Stadium on 27 July 2012 for the lighting of the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony, signifying the official start of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Around 115 Torchbearers a day will carry the Olympic Flame which is set to travel within ten miles of over 95% of the population. The Torch is made up of an inner and an outer aluminium alloy skin, held in place by a cast top piece and base, and perforated by 8,000 circles. Each circle represents one of the inspirational stories of the Torchbearers who will carry the Olympic Flame. Sunday 24 June: Huddersfield The Torch Relay arrives on New Hey Road (A640) at about 11.51am and travels down Trinity St, passing Greenhead Park. It crosses over the ring road and then left onto Railway St and into St George’s Square. It leaves Huddersfield on Bradford Rd and changes to convoy mode for its journey to Brighouse.
Monday 25 June: Batley and Dewsbury The Torch Relay starts at Timothy Lane in Batley (B6123) at about 9.24am travelling down Batley Field Hill, Clerk Green St and into Dewsbury along Track Road. It then makes its way into Dewsbury town centre then out on Wakefield road going passed Chickenley Community Playing Fields before continuing its journey to Wakefield. Maps of the route are available online at w w w. k i r k l e e s . g o v. u k / london2012 The convoy is made up of a number of vehicles which create a long procession which winds along the streets. Whilst there are some areas on the routes which may be closed to other traffic most of the route will remain open but police may temporarily stop traffic as the convoy passes. There will be music and street performers in St George’s Square in Huddersfield on the Saturday and Dewsbury town centre on the Monday. Along the routes there will be other entertainment which will help build up the excitement of the day.

Find out about other Olympic and Paralympic events at www.kirklees.gov.uk/london2012
Lining the streets Help create a fantastic carnival atmosphere along the Olympic Torch routes in Huddersfield, Batley and Dewsbury by decorating the streets with bunting and banners, making music, singing, cheerleading or by dressing up. Kirklees Council would like people to line the routes and cheer on the Torchbearers as they carry the Olympic Torch and enjoy this once in a lifetime
opportunity to be part of something unique. Groups of friends or organisations planning something special to welcome the Torch or who want to entertain the crowds as they wait are asked to contact the council for advice and help to find suitable locations for groups along the route. Get in touch with Martin Gonzalez on 01484 234059 or email martin.gonzalez@kirklees.gov.uk with ideas.
Torchbearers in Kirklees There are 30 Torchbearers living in Kirklees who have been selected to carry the Olympic Flame. Some will carry the Torch in Kirklees , others will run in nearby local authorities. All will have their “Moment to Shine” as they carry the flame along the route in front of friends, family and crowds lining the streets. The two Torchbearers featured on the front cover are Pat Ainsworth, 66, from Emley and Harry Crowther, 13 from Mirfield. Pat was chosen because of her
extensive charity fund-raising which has seen her raise over £120,000 by running marathons and taking part in trek challenges. Harry has an extremely rare premature ageing disorder known as Atypical Progeria Syndrome. Despite having arthritis and joint pain, Harry never complains and always has a smile on his face. He is an active fundraiser for Progeria and Great Ormond St Hospital where he was a patient. The torch they are holding was designed by 9 year old Rheanna
Pestell from Honley Junior School in a competition organised with help from the Pennine Schools Sports Partnership amongst the Honley schools, Lydgate school, and their international link schools in Uganda and France. The competition, funded as a LOCOG Advocacy project developed by Helme Junior & Infant School, saw pupils in all the schools design their own Torches with the overall winner being made with help from the CDT department at Honley High School.

Sport Makers choose which sports to be involved with and who they want to make sport happen for – friends, colleagues, neighbours or the local community. Music lovers are in for a royal treat this June, with Jubilee themed Concerts in the Park taking place in Huddersfield. The three day music festival is being held in Greenhead Park from Friday 8 to Sunday 10 June and entry will be free. Concerts in the Park will begin on the Friday evening, by taking everyone back to the 1970s, when the nation was celebrating the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. Crowds will be treated to a special one-off performance of Thank you for the Music, a live concert show featuring the music of Abba and the Bee Gees by professionals Easy Theatres, who tour the country performing to sell-out crowds. On Saturday the stage will be filled by
the Orchestra of Opera North for a proms concert – featuring guest solo artists and plenty of opportunities to wave union jacks and celebrate the royal occasion. And on Sunday afternoon the music will be brought back up to date with Party in the Park, a line-up of well-known and local musicians and performers who will bring the weekend to a fantastic close. The line-up for Party in the Park is currently still under wraps, but will be announced in the coming weeks. All of the events are free and will be suitable for a family audience.
