Other world premieres include works by the 2010 hcmf// composer-in-residence, British composer Rebecca Saunders, and Claudia Molitor, who is also showing a film of her work, Remember Me, a miniature, multimedia opera staged inside her grandmother’s writing desk. Established in 1978, hcmf// is the UK’s foremost festival of new music and occupies a unique position locally, regionally and nationally; it is held over 10 days in November each year in a variety of venues around Huddersfield and features over fifty events, including concerts, installations, talks, exhibitions, master classes, workshops, drop-in and durational events. www.communitykirklees.org.uk Community conversations is a way for voluntary and community organisations in Kirklees to share what they know and make new connections (both with each other and with local service providers). The Community conversations web site brings together information that local organisations are already publishing online, such as blogs and twitter feeds. Groups can also add their own articles to the website, so that we can all benefit from each other’s experiences. It can help your group to find out what other groups are doing, share what you know, collaborate with other organisations, access funding and training opportunities, get advice and useful information and tell people about the valuable work you do. Through Community Conversations Christine, a local volunteer, found out about community reporting and has since taken part in two projects, learning how to interview people and make her own videos. Mr Taylor got advice about setting up a new support group. Two community projects who support older people have made contact for the first time. There are a number ways to get involved in Community Conversations. You can subscribe to get the latest news by email, you can comment on any article on the site or share your links to promote your work. You can rate the articles and share them via email, twitter, Facebook etc. or you can become an author - we’ll show you how add your own articles. No previous experience of editing websites is necessary. If you’re a member of a local community organisation and you’d like to become one of our authors, you can attend a free content workshop to get you started. We will also give you a simple step-by-step guide. To find out more or book a place on a content workshop, please contact: Diane Sims (Kirklees Council). Festival of Light 2012 Friday 7 to Sunday 9 December Exciting, unusual and often downright bizarre – Festival of Light has long become a firm fixture on Yorkshire calendars. Bringing a veritable feast of street theatre, live music and open air entertainment to the streets of Huddersfield, this year’s programme promises not to disappoint. For now, organisers remain tight-lipped about the identity of this year’s headline show, but there are rumours that this year’s festival goers should expect the unexpected, after photos appeared on social media from the roof of Huddersfield’s Grade 1 Listed train station. As well as the headline show, Huddersfield will be treated to a whole host of other intriguing performances and street theatre shows over the weekend. Regular festival goers will recognise some familiar faces, as ‘hairdressers’ Osadia make a welcome return. Hugely popular back in 2010 when they created daring hairstyles on volunteers from the crowd, they will be transforming more people as they make themselves at home in the town’s Victorian Byram Arcade. Joining the weird and wonderful Osadia, strolling street theatre performers will take over town throughout the festival, including Dundu, a 5m illuminated puppet who will dance amongst the crowds. After a successful trial last year, King Street will once again host a live music stage, with acts from around the region

performing on both Friday and Saturday evenings. And, in a new home on Byram Street, the food and drink market will give visitors the perfect opportunity to soak up the festive atmosphere with stalls selling hot and cold food and drink. Opposite the food market, mesmerising light installations will transform St Peter’s Gardens into a winter wonderland, perfect for a brisk evening stroll. A festival art and craft fayre will be open all weekend inside the Huddersfield Methodist Mission on Lord Street and will be a great place to pick up unique Christmas gifts from some of the area’s best artists. The town centre will come alive from dusk on Friday and Saturday evenings, with entertainment until 10pm. And, on Sunday, visitors can get their final fill of the festival from mid afternoon, culminating with the traditional carol concert and firework finale around 5pm. The full programme, including times of shows and performances, will be available on the festival website from early November. Dates changed for Festival of Light:

In a change to the previously advertised dates, this year’s Festival of Light will take place from Friday

7 to Sunday 9 December.
