Ray Wilson

WhyEngland’s66starsowe debttoTownfullbackLaurie IT’S an iconic football photograph. Red-shirted Bobby Moore holding the Jules Rimet trophy aloft in his right hand, his left on the shoulder of Ray Wilson, the World Cup winner created by Huddersfield Town. Yet how many realise that had it not been for then Town left back Laurie Kelly’s refusal to uproot from his Black Country home and live in the West Riding, England might well have had a different player at left-back on that golden day at Wembley in 1966? Few would dispute that the Leeds Road product, by then playing for Everton, was the finest player in that position in the country at the time West Germany were beaten 4-2 after extra time. But when Wilson, from Shirebrook, near Mansfield, first signed for Town as a 17-year-old amateur in May 1952 – his full-time job was as a night worker on the railways – he regarded himself as an inside-left. “Town must have seen something in me when they first gave me a trial,” laughed Wilson, now 75 and living in the Colne Valley. “But it took a lot of hard work and patience to get myself up to scratch, and to be honest, after going from inside-left to left wing to left-half to left-back, the only other option was being left out of the team!” While many credit Roy Goodall, who played right-back for Town and England in the Twenties and later became trainer at Leeds Road, for

Agony and ecstasy for Ray as Bobby Moore hoists Jules Rimet Trophy aloft turning Wilson into a defender, the man himself says it was more down to first-team left-back Kelly’s insistence on remaining in Wolverhampton, who had transferred him to Town for £10,000 in October 1950. “Lol was a very good player, but like a lot at the time, he maintained his family home after his transfer, and through the week, still trained with Wolves,” explained Wilson. “After I signed full-time forms (in August 1952) I was what they termed a ground-staff player, which meant I

did odd jobs around Leeds Road as well as training. “Each Tuesday, there as a practice match on the main pitch between the first and second team. I was in the thirds at the time, but because Lol Kelly wasn’t there and I was, they put me in at left-back and things went from there.” Wilson certainly didn’t have what at that time was the archetypal full-back’s build. “They were all hulking great brutes, like centre-halves and centreforwards,” he recalled. “I thought it daft, because it took them 10 minutes to turn and they were being asked to mark the fastest players on the pitch. “I think I benefited from being the same size as the men I was marking, because it meant I could get the challenges in quicker and give them something to think about defensively as well.” After getting the small matter of two years’ national service out of the way – he was a signaller with the Royal Artillery in Egypt – Wilson, who made tackling more of an art form than the old-style physical assault, went from strength to strength. He made his Town debut against Luton at Leeds Road in the original Second Division in October 1955, and after sharing the left-back shirt with Kelly for a spell, became a fixture at No3. Such was his development that an England call-up came his way in April 1960, his debut coming in front of 129,783 Hampden crowd in a 1-1 draw with a Scotland side bossed by Andy Beattie, who had been the Town

manager when Wilson first signed for the club and gave him his first-team bow. It was the first of 63 England outings for Wilson, who made 30 of them (including four in the 1962 World Cup tournament in Chile) while with Town and remains their most-capped England international (ahead of Goodall with 25) and the last player to wear the three lions at senior level while with the club. Within weeks of the 1-0 defeat by Argentina in the famous Maracana Stadium in Brazil June 1964, Wilson had been transferred to Everton in a deal which brought Town £25,000 plus Republic of Ireland international Mick Meagan, who swapped Goodison for Leeds Road. Wilson had made 283 Town appearances, all but six of them in Division II, and had almost given up hope of playing in the top flight again. “Things were much different in those days,” he added. “Today, you read of players signing a five-year contract and then demanding to leave halfway through. “Clubs had far more control of players back then, and pretty much, you only got transferred if your club wanted that to happen. “I was 29 at the time of my move to Everton, I’d recently bought a new house in Huddersfield and I was very settled, and being in Division II didn’t seem to affect my England situation, so I wouldn’t have complained if I’d played out my career at Town.” Not that Wilson was complaining about being at Everton, with whom he won the FA Cup against Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley just months before England’s World Cup triumph back at the stadium. “It was good to play for such a big club in such a football-mad city,” said the man who later had short spells at Oldham and Bradford City before turning his back on football and becoming an undertaker at Outlane. “I hadn’t won anything in my career until 1966, and then along came two winners’ medals in close succession! “It made the wait seem very worthwhile. “Having said that, I also consider myself lucky to have played for Huddersfield Town, who were, and still are, a big club. “They gave me my chance and stuck with me when I was learning the game, and I enjoyed playing under all three of my managers (Beattie, Bill Shankly and Eddie Boot). “I can recall Town celebrating their 50th anniversary, so to think they’ve now had their centenary is very sobering!”

NO CHEAP SALES GIMMICKS JUST QUALITY DOUBLE GLAZING Law’sorder: Englandout DENIS LAW has a soft spot for Huddersfield – but not for England. The former Town, Manchester City and Manchester United ace famously played golf rather than watch the 1966 final on TV – and stormed off the course when told Alf Ramsey’s side had beaten West Germany. Forty four years on, the man who collected the first six of his 55 Scotland caps while still a Town player (the final three came in the 1974 World Cup in West Germany) feels as strongly as ever. Law, brought South from Aberdeen in 1955 by Town boss Andy Beattie, who had managed Scotland in the World Cup in Switzerland the year before, said: “I don’t take any interest in what England are doing. “When they’re on telly I walk about with blinkers on and things in my ears. “I would rather be on holiday if they were to win the World Cup.” Law, who made 91 Town appearances before joining Manchester City in a British record £55,000 transfer deal in Denis Law March 1960, added: “Wayne Rooney’s the main man for England. I see him all the time at United and you don’t get anywhere without a top-class goalscorer. “But I couldn’t really tell you about their weaknesses because I don’t watch their games. I don’t have a great deal of interest in what they do. “I look at the Germans and Brazil and I see the potential winners of the competition which rules out England.”

THIS will be Wayne Rooney’s World Cup. That’s the confident prediction of Town legend Andy Booth – and he knows a thing or two about strikers. Now a season into retirement after netting 150 goals for his hometown club, Booth reckons Rooney is ready to perform to his best on the biggest stage of them all. And if he does, former England Under 21 cap Booth reckons that will give Fabio Capello’s side their best chance to progressing and doing well. “I reckon only a handful of players are guaranteed a start for England and Wayne Rooney is certainly the first name on the list,” said Booth, now Club Ambassador at the Galpharm Stadium. “If we are to do really well in the tournament, then Rooney is going to have a big say in it all. “People talk about world class players and Rooney, for my money, is up in the top three, no doubt about that. “He loves to perform on the big occasions and I think this could well be Wayne Rooney’s tournament. “Last time he struggled with an injury in the build-up and then when we went out against Portugal he got sent-off. “Four years on he’s a better player, more experienced and I reckon South Africa will be his stage – one where he shows everyone he’s the world-renowned player we know he is.” Booth was surprised that Arsenal winger Theo Walcott was left out of the squad, but he still believes England can realistically aim to be one of the semi-finalists in the first week of next

convincing fashion. “We have seen it before where some of the ‘big’ nations slip up and crash out before the knockout stages, but with Capello in charge I’m sure England won’t be one of those this time.” While the ‘Capello Index’ was an unfortunate faux pas, Booth feels the Italian has made an impressive start to the job. He guided England through Group Six of the qualifiers with nine victories from 10 matches and just the one defeat. They topped the table ahead of Ukraine (the only team to defeat them en route to South Africa) with 27 points and an impressive tally of 34 goals scored compared with only six conceded. “Capello has had to make a lot of decisions during his time in charge and an awful lot of them have turned out to be the right decisions,” said Booth. “I like what I have seen of him. He is a no nonsense type of manager and he will be going out to win the World Cup, I’m absolutely certain of that. In his own mind, he’ll be wanting to win it. “He was definitely the right choice at the right time and we came through qualifying looking like a winning team, which was great. “Capello will want to re-create that in the finals and, while he will keep his cards very close to his chest – as he did with naming the 23-man squad – he will know right now who his starting line-up will be in that first match against the USA. “No-one will really know what he is Wayne Rooney during a training session yesterday at Rustenberg thinking and that keeps everyone on their toes and ready to impress. month.
