Module 1: Secret Agents Communication Engineering Meets January 13, 27, February 3, 10
How often do you communicate with someone else during the day? How many different tools do you use to communicate? Explore all the different ways humans, animals, and computers communicate with one another. Did you know spiders could send messages in their webs long before websites existed? Kids will have a chance to recreate that. Kids will also study electronic devices that allow them to communicate, as well as how people communicated over long-distance before phones were invented. They’ll even build a flashlight to send messages, using a cryptic code. To do this, we’ll learn about codes that people have used over the years to keep their messages private and how computer engineers still use secret codes today to encode messages. Students will also engineer a secret safe to keep all of their messages and belongings secure. In this module, kids will discover how important communication is to engineering the life of a Secret Agent.
Module 2: Space Odyssey Aerospace Engineering Meets February 24, March 2, 9, 16
Ever wanted to go on an adventure where no one’s ever been before? How would you pack? What would you eat? In this engineering adventure, kids are going to outer space as Aerospace Engineers. First, they think about what they should pack and take a test mission to an asteroid to gather samples. Next, they learn about what astronauts eat and design a tiny garden for the outer space atmosphere to provide fresh food on their trip. Then, they design their own spacesuit, learning about how different forces in space affect the human body, to make them both fashionable and functional. In the last part of this module, they visit Mars and build a Rover out of bamboo skewers and styrofoam plates to help scientists explore the Red Planet even after they are gone. In this module, kids think like real engineers who help astronauts prepare to live and thrive on their own Space Odyssey. **Both modules are included in the Winter Club Session lineup and last 4 weeks each. Last meeting date is March 16**
