hospital has apparently rejected this offer.

For the last several months, Christ’s Board of Directors has been negotiating a deal to sell the hospital to a different company, California-based Prime Healthcare Services, which owns a chain of 14 for-profit hospitals in that state. “Having received several offers over the past year, and after careful consideration, Christ Hospital is moving forward with the Asset Purchase Agreement by Prime Healthcare Services which we believe is in the best interests of the hospital and the community we serve,� Hebert said.

If approved by New Jersey’s recently appointed Attorney General Jeff Chiesa and the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, Christ would become Prime’s first acquisition outside of California and the deal could save the hospital, which loses $800,000 a month.

But concerns about Prime’s track record in California have led health advocates and officials in New Jersey to press Christ Hospital’s board to consider purchase bids from other potential buyers. LibertyHealth System, which owns Jersey City Medical Center, has already expressed an interest in purchasing Christ Hospital.

hrist Hospital has turned down a $10 million short-term loan from Hudson Hospital Holdco LLC, a company that wants to ultimately buy it. The loan, offered two days before Christmas, was intended to give Christ Hospital enough operational money to keep its doors open while it considered purchase bids.

This “emergency financing� would “provide a necessary lifeline to help keep the hospital open and allow the [Christ] board to run an orderly sale process with the participation of multiple bidders,� according to Spencer Baretz, a spokesman of Hudson Hospital Holdco. Hudson Hospital Holdco already owns Bayonne Medical Center and in 2011 bought Hoboken University Medical Center. Both hospitals are now for-profit entities.

However, in a statement released last week by Christ spokesman Paul Hebert, the

n Dec. 20, Former West New York Board of Education President Cosmo Cirillo and his lawyer, Edward. T. Rogan, filed a petition against the school board challenging his recent removal as president and subsequently from the board entirely.

According to the State of NJ’s Office of Administrative Law, on Dec. 1, Cirillo filed a Motion for Emergent Relief and Amended Petition that sought the removal of current board president Adrienne Kole-Sires and his own reinstatement. It also states that Cirillo believes his removal from the board was in violation of state statutes surrounding board of education policies.

Cirillo claimed in the petition that he and the West New York educational system will be “irreparably harmed� if he were not to be reinstated.

West New York Mayor Felix Roque has been battling Cirillo, an ally of previous Mayor Sal Vega, for over five months. The state had issued two letters – one in August and one in November – requesting that Cirillo step down. The state found that Cirillo’s full-time job as a clerk with the West New York municipal court conflicted with

Brothers arrested in connection with Christmas Day death in Jersey City

T

he Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor has released the name of the man killed on Roosevelt Avenue in Jersey City on Christmas Day as a result of what is believed to be a family dispute.

According to published reports, Jorge Alzendia died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head, allegedly the result of kicks, punches, and beatings with a shovel.

Alzendia’s three brothers-in-law have been arrested and charged with murder, according to the county prosecutor. The three men are reportedly brothers of Alzendia’s wife.

Hoboken hospital and nurses’ union reach contract agreement

T

he new owners of Hoboken University Medical Center and JNESO District Council 1, the hospital’s nurses’ union, have reached a collective bargaining agreement, according to a release from HUMC. The agreement was recently ratified by the union members.

“We value all of the employees at Hoboken University Medical Center and are looking forward to working with the members of all of the hospital’s bargaining units to provide high quality patient care,” said Phillip S. Schaengold, J.D., Chief Executive Officer of HUMC. A representative from JNESO was not immediately available for comment.

However, on the JNESO website, a banner reads: “Congratulations Hoboken on ratifying your contract!!!”

HUMC has now finalized collective bargaining agreements with all three of its unions since a new ownership group took over in October.

St. Augustine School group requests UPC codes for charity

T

he SAS Peace Makers, a group of fifth through eighth grade students from St. Augustine School in Union City, is collecting UPC codes from ConAgra Foods to donate to Feeding America: a domestic nonprofit organization for hunger relief. Each code helps provide a meal for hungry families. A list of admissible product codes is available on childhungerendshere.com.

The Peace Makers invite residents to drop off their codes at the school office, located at 3920 New York Ave. The group holds weekly meetings to discuss social issues and plan ways to help their community. Last month they collected

75 bags of food for the St. Augustine Church pantry and sent $650 from donations and cupcake sales to Feeding America, which a charity sponsor matched.

Gunman robs Secaucus gas station

A

lone gunman robbed a Route 3 gas station in Secaucus late Sunday night after striking two employees in the head with his weapon and demanding money, according to news reports.

The male left the gas station with an undetermined amount of cash in a black, small, twodoor BMW. Anyone with any information about the robbery is asked to call Secaucus Police at (201) 330-2042.

High school bands to rock ‘Live at the Park’

ive of the area’s hottest local youth bands will join forces on Saturday, Jan. 7, at the Park Performing Arts Center in Union City to raise money to support the Center’s community art classes for children. The concert called “Live at the Park” will feature five bands from Hudson County high schools.

The featured bands include Silver Plane Crucifix with Tim Erbach, Johnny Bauers and Rory Bauers; Monster Sludge with Evan Dibbs, Mike Prussack, Louis Garrido, and Nahuel Montilla; The .78 Blanks featuring Conor Brennan; The Cthulu Family Band with Marcel Rudin and Alex Mercuri; and Outtouched with Brandon Gallagher, Konrad Foord, and William Kirchoff.

In June, a baby girl was found abandoned on the steps of Weehawken High School. The mother was found a few blocks away and received a psychological evaluation. The baby recovered.

Mayor Dawn Zimmer and the Hoboken Municipal Hospital Authority helped sell Hoboken University Medical Center to a private buyer in November. A ribbon cutting was held in December.

A candlelight vigil was held in Jersey City on Oct. 17 in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Jersey City and Secaucus both had serious incidents of domestic violence this year.

In addition, both mom-and-pop businesses and chain stores moved to local shopping districts, and restaurants thrived. The number of ways to get around the county and neighboring regions has also increased, with refurbished transit terminals opening and plans for a new Amtrak tunnel in the future.

The Hoboken Blockbuster on Washington Street closed on March 13. A Halloween store occupied the large space in the fall, but at the end of 2011, the store remained empty.

The ARC (Access to the Region’s Core) Tunnel, a proposed $8.7 billion transit project to run through Hudson County into New York City, was cancelled by Gov. Christie in October 2010. However, it was announced in 2011 that Amtrak will build its own rail tunnel in the future.

Sports Like other years, 2011 saw the usual thrilling athletic victories – and those agonizing defeats. Students soared on the field and won scholarships, while the local bands cheered them on and won competitions of their own. North Bergen High School won a statewide football championship, but also saw controversy for one of its teams in the Hudson County youth football league.

Coaches retired and new ones were promoted. Here are just a few of the photographic highlights of the year in Hudson County sports.

ealth and medicine were big news in Hudson County in 2011. The county’s six hospitals announced new treatment options, programs, and equipment, but there were bigger changes as well. Just like nationwide, some local hospitals have suffered financially from low reimbursement rates for insurance and Charity Care, and they’ve had to compete with private facilities. So several of the county’s six hospitals have been sold to private companies who will run them at a profit. Here are photos from the year in health care and medicine.
