Head to the

HUDDLE ZONE North Jersey... the place to be for

T

he weather outside might be frigid, but as you will soon find out, the area around MetLife Stadium and this historic Super Bowl will certainly be hot. Welcome to the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area. This Huddle Zone Game Week Guide has been designed to give you the chance to learn about everything you need to know about enjoying the festivities and events, getting to the game safely and securely, with perhaps enjoying the area and having a ton of fun along the way. If you are fortunate enough to have tickets for the grand event, you will recognize that you will be a part of football history. That’s because Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium will be the first open air contest played in a cold weather site.

Organizers are also determined to call this Super Bowl as the first-ever “mass transit” Super Bowl, encouraging ticket holders to come to MetLife Stadium via trains and buses rather than driving. The local transit venues, such as NJ Transit on land and NY Waterway on the Hudson River, are dedicated to insure that there is an easy access to and from MetLife Stadium. This guide will serve as an assistance tool in doing so. So if you need assistance in trying to determine how to get to the Big Game, this is the place to find it. If you want to check out the hot spots and nightlife, this is the guide to help you. If you want to see the breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline from Hoboken or perhaps get a glimpse of the immense and exciting XLVIII Caul-

dron along the waterfront in that mile-square city, here’s your ticket. The Huddle Zone Game Week Guide provides maps to help you navigate the area a little better, with an itinerary of some of the top events surrounding the game, and some special behind-the-scenes information on the areas and activities you’ll find in Hudson County. Our goal is to give you a guide full of fun, useful, and handy information to help you make the most of your time here for the game and help you plan for when you return to our area. There’s a lot going on and new information is constantly being added, so for the most up-to-date information, be sure to visit www.hudsonreporter.com for current information or just scan the QR code on the contents page (pg. 4)

Getting to Many great ways to get to the game

I

f you’re one of the fortunate 80,000 or so fans who has secured a ticket to the Super Bowl, first let us offer congratulations.

it easy and cost effective to get there. But first: It is strongly suggested that you do not drive to the game. As many as 70 percent

If you follow the rules, you should have a great time, as long as you stay as warm as humanly possible. You’re going to be part of history, watching the first-ever cold weather Super Bowl. The Super Bowl Host Committee, as well as local transit agencies such as New Jersey Transit and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, have come up with several special transportation options and promotions to make

of visitors will be taking some form of mass transportation. Taxis and liveries will not be allowed to drop passengers at the stadium unless they get a special permit. Parking will also be at a premium, with fewer than 1 3 , 0 0 0 parking permits distribu t e d . Security will be tight for

vehicles trying to enter the Meadowlands Sports Complex all week prior to the Super Bowl. The NJ Transit rail lines are perhaps the best and easiest way to get to MetLife Stadium. The lines run to the Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg station in Secaucus, which will have a connecting line to MetLife Stadium. Travel time from Secaucus Junction station and MetLife Stadium is approximately 10 minutes. Round trip tickets from Secaucus Junction to MetLife Stadium cost $4.50 during the regular season. Secaucus Junction is a travel hub for train passengers, with links to stations in New York, Hoboken, and points north and west. On game day, some tickets may be available on line, and others may be available only at the stations. For more information about NJ Transit service, log on to www.njtransit.com or try NJ Transit’s MyTix Mobile Ticketing App.

New Jersey Transit has developed a “Super Pass” for its trains and buses during Super Bowl week, allowing visitors to travel extensively around the area for an eight-day period for one fee of $50. The passes run from Jan. 27 through the day after the game, Feb. 3. Order it online at njtransit.com/superbowl.

Special express bus Aside from the rail options above, the NY/NJ Super Bowl Host Committee will offer the “Fan Express” coach bus system to help fans get to the game, with service to and from nine stops in New York and North Jersey. In Hudson County, New Jersey, the stop will be at Harmon Meadows on Route 3 in Secaucus. Travelers in Jersey City, Hoboken, Weehawken, and other towns outside of Secaucus can take a quick bus, ferry, or PATH train ride into New York City to use stops there, if desired. To find out more, check out SBFa n E x p r e s s . c o m . That bus will cost $51 for the round trip.

In addition Also, extensive bus service runs to and from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in midtown Manhattan. The Coach USA (Route 351) provides what is called the Meadowlands Express on game days. To see if it is operating for the Super Bowl, visit www.351express.com or call (800) 877-1888.

Policies at the game Now, once you get to MetLife Stadium, there are policies you must follow as to what you are allowed to bring into the stadium. Here’s a list of what you can bring in. Clear bags that are 12” by 6” by 12” in size or less. Limited to one bag per person. Small purses/ handbags (clutch-type bags) that are 4.5” by 6.5” or less. Limited to one per person. Food of any kind, as long as it is contained in the clear plastic bag. Factory-sealed plastic bottles of water or Huddle Zone Game Week Guide • 2014 •

soft drinks that are 20 oz. or less in size. The caps of the drinks will be removed by

Safety Services teammembers. Still photography cameras with a lens that is 6” or less in length that is not contained in a case. Hand-carried jackets, blankets, or other items that are patted down and searched. Everything that you attempt to bring into

MetLife Stadium will be strictly searched. The advice here is to d r e s s warmly and not bring in any items. The security for the Super Bowl will be extremely strict. Just as a reminder, non-clear bags larger than 4.5” by 6.5” are prohibited, so that means camera bags, binocular cases, backpacks, fanny packs, diaper bags, and briefcases are out. Also, leave the laptop and/or iPad at home as well. Seat cushions are also

18 • Huddle Zone Game Week Guide • 2014

now prohibited. Banners, signs and/or flags are out. Umbrellas, strollers, laser pointers, balls of any kind are out. Weapons? Yeah, they’re a no-go. And of course, alcohol of any kind is strictly prohibited. MetLife officials also reserve the right to search any person entering the stadium who they deem risky. If you deny being searched, then you can say goodbye to the Super Bowl ticket you were so lucky to procure. So there you have the guide of how to get to MetLife Stadium and then what to do when you arrive. If you follow the rules, you should have a great time, as long as you stay as warm as humanly possible.

Getting around

I

f you’re here for the Super Bowl and not familiar with the surroundings and how to maneuver through the hustle and bustle of Hudson County, here are a few handy tips to help you get around as best as possible. Hudson County is one of the most densely populated areas in the entire country, with more than 650,000 residents in just an area of 62 square miles. If you have rented a car to get around, plan on giving yourself some extra time in your travels around the area, especially during the morning (7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.) and afternoon

(4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.) rush hours. Hudson County is the home of both traffic tunnels that travel under the Hudson River that link New Jersey to

time stuck in tunnel traffic. If you’re planning to make a journey into the Big Apple, you can readily do so without using the car.

No matter what mode of transportation you choose to use, chances are you will have a very good time enjoying what the area has to offer. New York, namely the Holland Tunnel in Jersey City and the Lincoln Tunnel in Weehawken. During the aforementioned rush hours, traffic in the areas surrounding the two tunnels tends to get heavy, so make plans accordingly. You don’t want to spend most of your free

HUDSON-BERGEN LIGHTRAIL

26 • Huddle Zone Game Week Guide • 2014

First of all, Hudson County is the home to the NY Waterway ferry line. You can easily get on one of the ferries to Manhattan from terminals in Weehawken, West New York, Hoboken, and Jersey City. NY Waterway offers a regular schedule of ferries to and from its locations. The NY Waterway line is not only popular with daily commuters who work in New York, but is also popular with visitors who may be vacationing in the area. NY Waterway also offers bus service in New York from the ferry terminals to the popular theater district and throughout Manhattan. For more information about NY Waterway’s

schedule and prices, log onto www.nywaterway.com. If you want to choose the subway to Manhattan, then the Port Authority Transit (PATH) trains are an excellent option for as low as $2.50 per ride. The PATH trains run in Hoboken and Jersey City. Log onto www. panynj.gov/path. You can also use the NJ Transit trains from the Secaucus Junction station to New York. Connecting trains run from Secaucus to MetLife Stadium on game day. In order to connect to the PATH train and other transportation modes from towns outside of Hoboken and Jersey City, NJ Transit operates a light rail system that runs from North Bergen through Union City and Weehawken into Hoboken, Jersey City, and Bayonne. The NJ Transit Light Rail also has expansive parking lots at most of its prime locations, especially in Weehawken and Jersey City, so an option could be driving to the Light Rail stations, parking there, and taking the Light Rail to either the PATH or the ferries. For more information, log onto www.njtransit.com. You can also travel throughout Hudson County via NJ Transit

buses or even the various shuttle commuter vans that pick up passengers on main thoroughfares in the county, like on Boulevard East and Kennedy Boulevard in northern Hudson County and Washington Street in Hoboken. Securing a taxi should not be a problem. There are several active taxi stands throughout the area, especially an extended stand right outside the train station in Hoboken and others in downtown Jersey City near the PATH stations at Exchange Place and

Grove Street. Just make sure you ask the cab driver to turn on his meter upon entering the cab. Some drivers may see a tourist from a mile away and might take advantage of the unfamiliarity to the area, so be alert for taxi fraud. Taxis between points within Hoboken have a standard rate of $5.

mittee are running special bus trips and rail promotions to make getting to the game quick and affordable from points in New York City and North Jersey. See related story inside these pages about getting to the game.

Parking and foot traffic If you still want to travel via automobile on your own, there are several paid parking lots and garages in the hot spots such as Hoboken and Jersey

City, since visitors need to get to the numerous and highly reviewed restaurants and bars. And if you’re so inclined to brave the elements during the winter frost, there is a beautiful walking path right along the Hudson River that now stretches from the George Washington Bridge in the north to Bayonne in the south. The waterfront walkway offers the best views of the Manhattan skyline by far. Just bring the mittens and ear muffs to ward off the cold. The temperatures do tend

to be a little bit lower right along the waterfront. So there you have it, a condensed version of how to get around the area during Super Bowl week in Hudson County. No matter what mode of transportation you choose to use, chances are you will have a very good time enjoying what the area has to offer. In the next few pages, you’ll find ample maps and resources to help you get around – so take a look and use well!

players have made appearances at the LSC, the latest being former New York Jets Super Bowl hero Randy Beverly, who had a huge interception in the Jets’ win over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III. The 5,000 square-foot interactive multimedia exhibit features more than 200 pieces of legendary memorabilia, including the very first Vince Lombardi Trophy, presented each year to the winner of the Super Bowl and named after the legendary coach and New Jersey native. There will be new material presented by the popular NFL Films, never-before-displayed

artifacts, and a specially designed “Hometown Heroes” display that pays tribute to the hometown teams, namely the Giants and Jets. “We’re always looking for new and innovative ways to extend the experience of the Hall of Fame beyond our walls in Canton,” said Joe Horrigan, the vice president of communications and exhibits for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. “Gridiron Glory is devised to galvanized fans in a compelling way and provides the perfect platform for us to reach new audiences.” To complement the artifacts and interactive elements of the Gridiron Glory exhibit, the Liberty Science Center will unveil an interactive Training Camp exhibit where guests can test their physical skills on authentic equipment as they pass, kick and jump their way through the 1,200-square-foot experience. The Liberty Science Center also added some family oriented programs that appear to be fun and will be featured Feb. 1 and Feb. 2: Pint-Sized Players (6 and under) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Even the youngest players can train like the pros on an obstacle course that’s just their size. Flip over

inflatable tires, stiff arm some tackle dummies, and even spike a football. Let’s Get Ready to Crumple! (all ages) from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. — Join a life-size paper football game. Kick a field goal through the six-foot post and learn how angles, velocity, and rotations help you score. Live Action Comedy! Kids in the Huddle (all ages) — 12 p.m., 2 p.m. & 3 p.m. — It’s time for the big game. Only problem is, the players have no idea what they’re doing! And the only way the coach is going to get them ready in time is

with some help from the real pros: kids! Join our tragically bad football squad and teach them how to throw, punt, and tackle in this live-action comedy show where the kids get to be the real stars. The interactive games and programs just add to the excitement that will be part of the Liberty Science Center’s Gridiron Glory exhibit. All of the Gridiron Glory and Training Camp fun comes with the price of a single ticket, which is $19.75 for adults and $14.75 for kids ages 2-12.

is worth visiting

‘Mile-Square City’ is known for views, nightlife, shopping, history

I

t’s the location of the first organized baseball game, the spot where the first forward pass in football history was ever thrown, and the birthplace of the world’s most famous crooner, the Chairman of the Board, Francis Albert Sinatra. Beyond the innovation of baseball pioneer Alexander Cartwright in 1846 or the forward pass in 1879 in the YalePrinceton game, Hoboken is one of the most diverse communities in

New Jersey and one of the more exciting places to live. Just recently, Hoboken was ranked as one of the most desirable urban communities in the country. It’s a milesquare, incredibly walkable, laid out like a grid with parks along the waterfront. Washington Street in Hoboken is constantly abuzz with excitement, with hundreds of interesting shops, bars, and top-flight restaurants. On almost every street corner, there’s a different bar with its own

style and personality. And of course, Washington Street is the home of Carlo’s Bakery, the home of the extremely popular “Cake Boss” reality television show. The explosion of that show’s immense popularity has caused long lines to form. There’s the extension of the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway that features breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline, seen nowhere else. Along that waterfront sits Pier A Park, where several events will take

place prior to Super Bowl XLVIII. From Jan. 27 through Feb. 2, Hoboken will host the Hoboken Huddle. The centerpiece of the Hoboken Huddle, which will include activities, food, and entertainment, will be a large 16foot tall illuminated sculpture of the Roman numerals “XLVIII” overlooking the Manhattan skyline. “We invite visitors to Hoboken to complete their Super Bowl experience with an iconic photo only available on the New Jersey side of the river,” said Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “With Hoboken’s restaurants, nightlife, easy access to Manhattan, and the only direct rail connection to the stadium, there is no better place to celebrate the big game.” In partnership with the US Curling Association, the Hoboken Huddle will feature three lanes of curling that will be free and open to the public. Early in the week, an instructor from the US Curling Association will be on hand to provide tips to participants. The curling lanes will remain at Pier A the entire month of February to coincide with the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Japan.

WestwoodOne Sports, the official national radio partner of the NFL, and NBC Sports Radio will have a broadcast presence within the Hoboken Huddle. If that doesn’t float your boat, you might want to explore other aspects of Hoboken’s history, like where the

Academy Award-winning movie “On the Waterfront,” with Marlon Brando was filmed. At the Hoboken Historical Museum, you can learn even more about the city’s history, including about composer Stephen Foster and other former residents.

ersey City, the second largest city in the state, is becoming increasingly popular with tourists, families, artists, and young professionals who commute to the city’s financial district. Art festivals like the quarterly “JC Fridays,” popular poetry readings, and the annual Art Studio Tours are a constant draw to this vibrant city. The downtown section glitters with new buildings, restaurants, and parks, even including one park that resembles a beach. And with more than six charter schools in town and a top-ranked public magnet high school, more and more families are choosing to grow here. Jersey City is also home to the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and Liberty Science Center. A visitor can also head to the Newport Shopping Mall in downtown Jersey City, visit the Journal Square district where the land-

The city will be the location for Football Fashion Week, which will run to coincide with the Super Bowl. The week, which will run through Jan. 30, is designed to promote awareness for charitable causes within Hudson County and New Jersey through fashion, entertainment, and sports-related events. All of the proceeds of the week will go to the Jersey City Youth Foundation’s NFL Play 60 flag football programs, the New York/New Jersey Snowflake Youth Foundation and the Gridiron GANG (Giving Athletes New Goals). The week hopes to spotlight some imaginative talent while giving industry insiders and fashion enthusiasts a glimpse into Jersey City’s up-andcoming social and cul-

tural scene. The producer of the Jersey City Fashion Week, namely the Give to Live Foundation, is working in conjunction with Fashion Week Brooklyn and Fashion Week Baltimore to spearhead the events. Give to Live Foundation, producers of Jersey City Fashion Week, rhe City of Secaucus, Atlantic City Fashion Week, BK Style Foundation, producers of Fashion Week Brooklyn, and Fashion Umbrella (the producers of Baltimore Fashion Week) have announced their collaboration and eager efforts to restore and rebuild the community by exposing art and fashion by emerg-

ing designers to raise money for local nonprofits.

EVENTS Some athletes have been tabbed to model clothes at a fundraiser. GIIII SPORTS, designed by Giants Super Bowl linebacker Carl Banks, will be featured at a fashion show at Pole Position Raceway in Jersey City. Former Giant receiver and longtime Hudson County resident Odessa Turner was slated to be part of the fashion show as well on Jan. 24, beginning at 6 p.m. Pole Position Raceway is located at 99 Caven Point Road in Jersey

City, relatively close to the Liberty Science Center. There will also be a cognac tasting soiree Jan. 25 from 7-10 p.m. at the VB3 Lounge, 475 Washington Blvd. Paul Jones of JTE Spirits, known as Mr. Cognac, will present a collection of the world’s finest cognacs, along with dinner. There will also be an after party. More information is available online by visiting www.JerseyCityFashionWeek.c om. Tickets are on sale now at http://jcfw14. eventbrite.com
