Hudson County women get the job done
N
ew Jersey’s economy is in part driven by Hudson County businesses, large and small. More businesses are on the way because Hudson County is an ideal business environment due to its location in the metropolitan New York City market, access to public transportation, and local amenities. The economy of Hudson County employs at least
370,000 people with the largest industries being Professional, Scientific and Technical Services, Health Care and Social Assistance, and the Retail Trade. It’s home to one of the country’s most diverse populations, and, significantly, many women business owners and entrepreneurs.
According to the last census, of the 792,000 businesses that call Hudson County home, women own 252,944, and the number is growing. President of the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce Maria Nieves said these numbers will continue to increase as more and more women join the workforce and venture out on their own. “I think when you check the data again after the next census there will likely be an uptick,” said Nieves who noted that the chamber and Hudson County have programs and initiates to help support women in business, and more are on the way. “We are launching, this year, our Women of Commerce Cohort Group for women in business which will be sort of the next iteration of our women in business council but on the next level,” she said.
Needed, More Networking This group of women business leaders will take an active role in creating events and contacts that are most helpful to chamber members. It’s this networking that women need in order to better their chances of success, Nieves said. Networking “enables them to open a successful business with the support of a pool of like-minded
entrepreneurs and mentors who can help point a new business owner in the right direction by being an expert source that new business owners can tap into for support,” Nieves said. “It is critical for women to do this and find each other and support one another.” Other chamber initiatives include the Town & Gown, with Saint Peter’s University in which chamber members who want planning projects for their businesses are paired with their own pro-bono team of consultants composed of Saint Peter’s University seniors majoring in Business Administration and their professors. “A lot of women use that program,” Nieves said.
Mentoring Women The chamber is also looking into creating a mentorship program for members to help new business owners find mentors in their field. This September the chamber will host a small business expo focused on women entrepreneurs. Nieves said the county has a variety of resources to help support women business owners, and business owners in general.

According to the Hudson County Office of Business Opportunity (HCOBO), securing a certification from government or the private sector improves a company’s ability to compete for exclusive contracting opportunities. The HCOBO helps businesses identify which certifications best fit their business model and provide the best financial prospects. The HCOBO acts as a conduit between business and local, state, and federal business opportunities. It helps businesses identify county resources, in-
The HCOBO works with the county to identify “Set-Aside” opportunities. This is a competitive process in which only certified businesses can compete for 10 percent of the county’s total spending on all goods and services. The Hudson County Economic Development Corporation, a nonprofit that serves all 12 municipalities in Hudson County, also helps businesses through loan and funding assistance. It helps identify opportunities for economic assistance available from federal and state programs, including the Grow New Jersey Assistance Program and Urban Enterprise Zone incentives. It also partners with lenders to provide a wide variety of loans and helps businesses explore their eligibility for available financing. Hudson County offers a number of services to help business owners—women and men—access the resources they need to build and sustain a healthy business.

Dr. Robin Lucas Ceallaigh Pender Salvation Wellness Ceallaigh Pender is the powerhouse girl boss behind Jersey City’s beloved Salvation Wellness, a modern CBD apothecary and wellness studio. Bozena Linowski European Day Spa “and Salon Born in Krakow, Poland, Bozena’s journey as the owner of the European Day Spa and Salon began in June of 1992. As a newcomer to Bayonne, she arrived from Poland shortly after graduating from college and the Parisian Skin Care Academy in 1989. Bayonne always held a great appeal to her as a vibrant city to live and work. Her business beginnings were very humble, being a one-woman show for the first few years. Madeline Fiadini LoRe Madeline Fiadini LoRe Foundation for Cancer Prevention. In 2008, Madeline founded and became the Chairperson of the Madeline Fiadini LoRe Foundation for Cancer Prevention. A three-time cancer survivor, Madeline is passionate about preventing cancer. The foundation provides free cancer screenings to those individuals who “fall between the cracks” and are not covered by insurance. Madeline’s career of volunteerism began as a board member of Women Rising in Jersey City. This was followed by being a trustee of the Bayonne Medical Center Foundation for 16 years and a founding member of The Simpson Baber Foundation for the Autistic. As a result of her volunteer efforts, two major centers were opened at Bayonne Medical Center: The John C. Fiadini Outpatient Oncology Center, and the Madeline Fiadini LoRe Women’s Center. Madeline has been recognized for her community commitment countless times. Among her honors are Concerned Citizens Civic Achievement Award, The Girl Scouts of Greater Essex and Hudson Counties Woman of Distinction Award, the American Cancer Society’s Crimson Ball Honoree, Women Rising Award, All Saints Catholic Academy Community Leadership Honoree, Historical Society of Bayonne Leadership Award, and the Royal Hero recognition at Robinson School. She was named the GFWC Peninsula Women’s Club Woman of Achievement and Jersey City Council’s Woman of Action in 2015, Bayonne Chapter of UNICO 2016 Humanitarian of the Year, and was honored at the UNICO National Convention as the 2016 Cianci Humanitarian Award recipient. In 2019 Madeline received the Daryl Harrison Rand Leadership Award at the Hudson County Legends Ball and was the honoree at Metropolitan Family Health Networks 2019 gala.
