ne of Hudson County’s oldest and most established communities, Jersey City Heights, is steeped in tradition. The neighborhood, which was once part of the municipality of Hudson City, became an enclave for Irish immigrants who migrated to New Jersey in the mid-1800s. More recently,

O

Latin Americans have made the Heights their home, making this one of Jersey City’s most diverse neighborhoods. As the community’s name implies, the Heights is one of the highest points in Jersey City, overlooking Hoboken. It offers unobstructed sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline across the Hudson River.

Pershing Field, which boasts a pool, ice rink, and baseball fields. The 14-acre Jersey City Reservoir is also located here, situated between Summit, Central, and Jefferson avenues, opposite Pershing Field. The reservoir provided drinking water to city residents until it was decommissioned around 1990. Built in the late 1870s, the reservoir – officially known for years as Reservoir No. 3 – was planned as part of an integrated series of water supplies that would provide potable water for city residents. For at least 110 years the reservoir system did just that until it was shut down and the city started getting its drinking water from the Boonton Reservoir in Morris County. After its closure Reservoir 3 was abandoned for years but has preserved and refashioned as a recreational park for residents.

FOR SHOPPERS

The Heights also has plenty to offer shoppers, both those who live in the community and those who come from the nearby Journal

Square and downtown neighborhoods. The area is home to several family-owned small businesses that have been in operation for generations. While a number of large regional chains have come to Jersey City in recent years and have settled in other communities, the appeal of the Heights-based “mom-andpops” is their neighborhood charm. The heart of the Heights’ business district is Central Avenue, a three-quarter mile stretch of commercial establishments between Manhattan Avenue and North Street. The district is home to more than 450 businesses ranging from fresh bakeries to jewelry stores, and everything in between. In recent years there’s been a push to make the Jersey City Heights a destination beyond its recreational and retail offerings and local artists have tried to make it an arts hub as well. Last year, with funding from Hudson County, local artists painted two murals which now grace the outside walls of .99 Power and Daisy Cleaners. Three additional murals were later commissioned, bringing the total number of murals up to five.
