Jersey City...the heart of art in New Jersey Tour studios, galleries and venues featuring the work of hundreds of artists

he Jersey City Art and Studio Tour (JCAST), now in its 27th year, developed from an event rooted in artists’ studios, retailers, and other downtown spaces (111 First Street among them) into the City’s premier cultural event. Since its inception, the Tour has annually attracted thousands of art aficionados every October from the tri-state area. It was started in 1990 by Charles Kessler and Pat Donnelly of Gold Coast magazine (a Jersey Journal weekly), and continued by Al Preciado and Margaret Schmidt. The event has garnered increased investment by the city over the years, reflecting the importance of Jersey City as a center for the arts in New Jersey. From 1994 to 2013, JCAST was cosponsored by Pro Arts, the Jersey City Office of Cultural Affairs, and other sponsors. Pro Arts is a nonprofit organization that promotes the visual arts and the “advancement of the rights,

welfare and economic well-being of professional artists.” The event is currently presented by the City of Jersey City, the Municipal Council, and the Jersey City Office of Cultural Affairs, with participating partners. Mayor Steven M. Fulop expresses the city’s sentiment best: “From the Heights, to Greenville, to Downtown, to the West Side, to Bergen Lafayette and Journal Square, Jersey City’s cultural scene continues to expand and diversify. Support our local artists by visiting their exhibits and purchasing their work, and engage with your neighbors during one of the biggest annual art events in the region. You do not want to miss JCAST!” This citywide cultural event is an incredible celebration of the dynamic and diverse creative community that lives and thrives in Jersey City—truly the heart of art in New Jersey. continued on page 5

#JCAST2017 On October 14 and 15, 2017, more than 160 artist studios, galleries, museums, art markets, and other art-activated spaces across Jersey City are inviting the public to enjoy and purchase art in all forms of media. As the second largest city in New Jersey, Jersey City is a hot spot for imaginative creators. During the JCAST weekend, thousands of residents and visitors will engage with more than 500 of these talented individuals on their own turf. The myriad of JCAST events include live art demos, interactive exhibits, music, art markets, panel talks, dance performances, curated bus, bike and walking tours, and so much more! Complimentary shuttle buses will drive tourgoers throughout the city from noon to 6 PM both days, to ensure that they can view exhibits with ease and comfort. All JCAST events are free and open to the public.

The JCAST weekend will kick off with an evening reception, Friday, October 13, 6 to 9 PM, at the illustrious Mack-Cali Harborside Atrium, 210 Hudson Street, near the Hudson River waterfront and Exchange Place PATH station. The event is open to the public and will feature live music, panel discussions, demonstrations, live painting, and coloring book art, allowing JCAST artists an opportunity to unwind while interacting with their art fans. Attendees will have a sneak peek at two Pro Arts exhibits, What’s Next? Pro Arts Members’ Exhibition and Curators’ Choice Fall Exhibition 2017, which will showcase in a gallery adjacent to the Atrium. The weekend will culminate with an Artists’ Reception on Sunday, October 15, 5 to 8 PM, at the stunning Hudson County Community College Department of Cultural Affairs’ Benjamin J. Dineen III and Dennis C. Hull Gallery, in Journal Square. The gallery features a show called Each State of the Mind is Irreducible: Spanish & Latin Artists , including artists based in Mana

Contemporary New Jersey (on Newark Avenue in Jersey City) and Chicago. Mana Contemporary is dedicated to providing a platform for contemporary art and artists through exhibitions, studio programs and public programs. The Jersey City Art & Studio Tour is presented by Mayor Steven M. Fulop, the Jersey City Municipal Council and the Jersey City Office of Cultural Affairs.

Special thanks to our JCAST 2017 partners, including Claremont Companies, Del-Sano, Goldman Sachs, GRID Real Estate, HarrisonRand, the Hudson County Community College Department of Cultural Affairs with the Benjamin J. Dineen III & Dennis C.
