West side story No need to cross the Hudson for great holiday finds One of the advantages of living in Jersey City all of the public transportation available to New York City, but don’t let our glitzy neighbor to the east outshine the superb shopping offerings right at home.
When it comes to buying gifts for the holidays, Jersey City is home to many independently owned boutiques and terrific restaurants. The downtown shopping district along Grove Street and Newark Avenue is, for instance, home to small specialty shops that cater to the neighborhood’s well-heeled Wall Street workers. Grove Street – which boasts jewelers, accessories shops, home furnishing stores, and other retailers – offers the ease of one-stop shopping. With the holiday season now in full swing, most of these stores have special deals to move merchandise off the shelves by Dec. 24. Shoppers looking for unique gifts for pets or babies can visit the Grove Street strip before stocking up on fine wine and spirits for those upcoming holiday social gatherings. For that one-of-a-kind gift for the fashionista who has everything, visit Jersey City’s Powerhouse District, a residential/arts area adjacent to the Newark and Grove corridors. The area features several lifestyle and personal care boutiques that sell chic apparel for women and men. While the shops in this area are spread out, their selections are worth the hunt. Despite the huge amount of foot traffic from residents and commuters in the neighborhood, Nikol Floros, executive director of the Historic Downtown Special Improvement District (HDSID), said the locals often overlook the commercial gems hidden in this community. “You know, when people think of ‘downtown,’ they sometimes assume it only covers the waterfront.”said Floros. “Downtown really isn’t just the waterfront. I think people forget about the businesses on Newark, Jersey, Montgomery and Grove. Ultimately, we want people to remember that they can do a lot of their shopping right here along the Newark and Jersey corridor. We want people to remember to support these small, independent mom and pop businesses.” To attract more foot traffic to the area, the HDSID has this year stepped up efforts to lure more customers to the neighborhood. In September the organization hosted the All About Downtown Street Fair, and on November 28 it hosted its first annual tree lighting ceremony in Grove Plaza. Floros said such initiatives are meant to keep local dollars in the community, and in the hands of independent storeowners who live in the neighborhood. And since all that time store-hopping can work up a fierce appetite, be sure to plan a time out at one of the area’s numerous watering holes.
