udson County is colorful – the people, the politics, the places. And they’re constantly changing. As we document the twists and turns of Hudson County life throughout the year, we also strive to relate the history of the subjects, so that people new to the area can learn about the origins of the news and have the tools to understand what’s to come. But it’s not only words that tell the unique stories of New Jersey’s most densely populated county; sometimes a snapshot says it all.

H

Thus, we bring to you the Hudson Reporter newspaper group’s first “Year in Pictures” edition. The most picturesque or telling photos from 2010 grace these pages, bubbling with children’s cheer as our youngest residents chow down at local festivals, and displaying officials’ agony as they are handed political defeat. Categories of photos include headline news, sports, entertainment, health, education, and much more. Look through this special edition, save it for years to come, and submit your own

BRIEFS Hoboken Hospital Authority to vote Jan. 4 on hospital bidder fter a community advisory committee reviewed bids for the sale of Hoboken University Medical Center, the Hoboken Municipal Hospital Authority will vote on Tuesday, Jan. 4 on whether the board should enter negotiations with a final bidder. The name of the bidder has not yet been released, and will be revealed at the Jan. 4 meeting. The meeting was originally scheduled for Dec. 30, but a public notification problem moved the meeting to Jan. 4 at 6 p.m. at Hoboken University Medical Center. The city, which saved the hospital from potential closure in 2008 by guaranteeing a $52 million bond, is searching for a private buyer to relieve Hoboken of the bond guarantee. Mayor Dawn Zimmer has said she wants the facility kept as a hospital.”

State to Jersey City: Hold off on Public Works/Incinerator Authority merger hen Jersey City business administrator Jack Kelly told the Jersey City Reporter last week that a merger of the city’s Public Works department (DPW) with the Jersey City Incinerator Authority (JCIA) was “unlikely” to be put to a vote in January as the city studies comments by state officials, it turns out that was just part of the story.

YEAR GOES OUT WITH A BANG – THE STREETS WERE STILL FULL OF SNOW LAST WEEK AFTER A BLIZZARD DUMPED MORE THAN TWO FEET OF THE WHITE STUFF IN SOME AREAS OF HUDSON COUNTY ON SUNDAY.

The state’s Division of Local Government Services sent a letter on Dec. 9 to Assistant Business Administrator Greg Corrado saying the city should hold off on their merger until it addresses several issues. The state was responding specifically to the city wanting to give employees, who would be laid off as a result of the proposed merger, a one-year service credit in their pension. The letter by Thomas Neff, the director of Local Government Services, found that the city’s application for a “Early

Retirement Incentive Program” was not acceptable because state statute does not allow for pension credit to be given in a situation where there is a shared service agreement, not the case in this merger; the list of employees the city wants to give pension credit includes those with less than 20 years of service, and the Jan. 1 date initially set for the merger was not enough time for the state to analyze the cost savings.

Kelly, in a letter sent last week to Neff as well as the City Council, Mayor Jerramiah Healy, and other officials, said the city’s administration will take “no immediate action” to consolidate the DPW with the JCIA. He also called for both the DPW Director Rodney Hadley and JCIA Executive Director Oren Dabney to start cutting $2.7 million in their respective budgets to achieve savings while the merger continues to be worked out.

Union City building collapses in fire three-story residential building collapsed near the corner of 38th Street and Park Avenue in Union City, a few blocks from the Weehawken border, after a fire gutted the structure and a neighboring residential building on Tuesday afternoon. As of Wednesday morning, the cause of the fire was yet to be determined, according to North Hudson Fire Chief Brion McEldowney. “We do at this time believe it started in the basement of the original fire building,” McEldowney said. “The fire then spread up from the basement through the interior walls.” The collapsed building is located at 3807 Park Ave. The fire spread to a neighboring building, 3809 Park Ave., which survived the collapse, but was gutted by the fire.

North Bergen man dies in Christmas crash after getting out of vehicle 40-year-old man from North Bergen died in a two-vehicle collision on the New Jersey Turnpike at 6:45 Christmas Eve morning, according to the Record of Hackensack. Francisco Martinez, stepped out of his van and was hit by another vehicle, the newspaper reported.

Another driver was also killed when he stepped out of one of the vehicles. The other occupants were injured. All were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center.

Community clock installed in Secaucus Plaza isitors to the center of town in Secaucus have surely by now noticed a new fixture in the Plaza: a new 16-foot clock outside Marra Drugs, which was delivered by Santa and his elves on Dec. 23. The $26,000 timepiece, which was purchased from the Verdin Co. in Ohio, features a four-face design that can be seen from several blocks away and, according to local officials, adds a sense of character to the area. The clock is part of an overall downtown facelift the town began last summer as part of an effort to revive business and commerce in the center of town, an effort that has included the addition of new park benches, flowers, and a modification to the island outside Marra Drugs, where the community clock now stands. The town, which recently applied for a $250,000 community redevelopment grant to help revive the Plaza, hopes to eventually develop a unified look for businesses based in the center of town and attract new businesses to the area. Last year, several downtown businesses folded in Secaucus, including Suga, Fifth & Front, the Flower Box, Weichert Realtors, and Family Video Plus.

NB recycling plant fined fter numerous fires over the years, North Bergen’s Eagle Recycling plant has been ordered to pay $71,600 in fines to the U.S. Department of labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration. OSHA cited Lieze Associates, which owns Eagle Recycling of New Jersey, for workplace safety and health hazards that were found at its facility.

A

The fines were the result of an inspection that was a follow up to one completed in May 2009. It resulted in the company being cited for one willful, four repeat and three serious violations, as well as two failure-to-abate notices. The willful violation, a $33,000 fine, is the result of not providing fall protection for employees exposed to a 12-foot fall. The four repeat violations, an $8,000 fine each, are for exposing workers to the hazard of being struck by vehicles, uncovered material chutes, lack of exit signage, and failing to complete medical evaluations and fit testing for employees who are required to fit tight fitting respirators. The three serious violations, a $3,600 fine, were due to an exposed floor hole, a lack of fall protection, and a lack of proper means of egress. The last violation is only given to companies whose lack of safety precautions could result in a serious injury or death. “OSHA will not tolerate employers that fail to abate hazards and leave workers at risk,” said Kris Hoffman, director of OSHA’s area office in Parsippany, N.J., which conducted the inspection. “It is vital that the company fully abates all of these hazards immediately to protect the safety and health of its employees.”] According to published reports, North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue has responded numerous times over the year to Eagle Recycling to put out fires started by a wood chip hopper being overloaded, including a fire last Thursday.

Weehawken releases trash pickup update he town of Weehawken announced last week that Town Hall would be closed on Friday Dec. 31. There will be no garbage or recycling pickup on Jan. 1.

Boyfriend allegedly stabs girlfriend on Christmas 27-year-old North Bergen resident allegedly stabbed his girlfriend in the chest on Christmas Day before barricadA ing himself in his home with their 4-year-old son, said police. Junior Taveras was charged with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, criminal restraint, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose. According to North Bergen Police Sgt. Marco Rovelo, police responded to a domestic report between Taveras and his girlfriend on Dec. 25 around 4:30 a.m. They were met by the victim, who said that Taveras had allegedly stabbed her in the chest before locking himself in the house with their son, refusing to come out. She told the officers that their son had been sleeping before the incident occurred. Officer Erika Smallen and Sgt. Angelo Foresee, after a few hours, were able to convince Taveras to let the 4year-old leave their home. The child was unharmed. Soon after, they convinced Taveras to surrender. The victim was transported to Palisades Medical Center, where she was treated and released for a minor cut to her chest. Taveras, whom police said was allegedly suicidal, was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he currently remains, police said. His bail has been set at $50,000 with no 10 percent option.

Local student writes first novel North Bergen resident and Academy of Architectural and Contemporary Themes High School student created a 50,000 word book in 30 days. According to AACT and High Tech High School Director Dr. Joseph Giammarella, Andy Santana created the book after Language Arts instructor Mickey Diamond, in conjunction with the National Novel Writing Month, encouraged students to write novels. Santana was the only student to complete his own, titled “The Undecider,” within 30 days. Santana’s novel covers a month in the emotional life of a fictional character who shares the author’s name, a third-person Doppelganger. The book is formatted in a series of “therapy sessions.” “This is quite an achievement,” declares Diamond, who is now in his third year of teaching at AACT. “What Andy has done is impressive. He can now claim the title of author. Not many people – let alone high school students – can make such a claim.” Santana has submitted his novel to NaNoWriMo.org, but he will be polishing his work for the next several months. In April 2011, he plans to enter “Script Frenzy,” a month-long dramatic writing contest hosted by the same website. “Write a script will be more difficult than the novel because of the format,” said Santana. “In a novel, you can write more freely.”

Community here’s more to Hudson County than the hard news stories. Sometimes it’s worth getting to know the odd buildings, quirky people, unusual pastimes, and significant milestones that our neighbors want to share — in other words, the feature stories and “Good News.” The features in our paper this past year ran the gamut, highlighting everything from marathon-running senior citizens to award-winning Sinatra impersonators to young inventors. We weren’t the only ones who did the writing; as always, our neighbors shined through in the items and photos they submitted to make us aware of their birthdays, graduations, promotions, and births. Here, we share some of the photos that taught us about our neighborhoods over the past year.

Development & Transportation ew development means new residents, and that means new amenities for those residents to enjoy. Many of the spaces in Hudson County that were available for development 15 years ago have since been built upon, and in 2010, the county mostly saw continuations of plans approved years earlier rather than major new plans. In Secaucus, the second phase was completed of the massive Xchange at Secaucus Junction residential project. In Jersey City, construction continued on the Monaco Towers, twin residential buildings with 500 rental units. In one of the biggest redevelopment projects in Hudson County, Bayonne discussed the redevelopment of the 430-acre former Military Ocean Terminal. The past year saw several new announcements of parks and transportation options. And while a proposed new rail tunnel through Hudson County to New York City was canceled, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg talked about the city extending one of its subway lines to Secaucus and possibly Hoboken.

The Atrium provides a safe and secure home for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of memory impairment, totally independent of our larger Atrium community. We celebrate the uniqueness of each individual, learning as much as we can from family and friends, then using our insight to involve residents in activities that help them feel at home. The staff at the Atrium have received specialized training from the Alzheimer’s Association of New Jersey. In addition, we offer support groups and counseling for families affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

Respite Care “The Gift of Time Are you feeling stressed from day-in, day-out, round the clock care and supervision of and elderly relative? Respite care allows caretakers to have temporary or occasional time off to recoup emotionally, handle other family tasks or just get away for a while. Respite strengthens the ability of families and primary caregivers to continue to provide care in the home.

S

mall elections can have big ripple effects – that was the moral of this year’s political outcomes in Hudson County. Something as seemingly innocent as a race for county sheriff showed that the county’s Democratic machine was still pumping, while a few ward council races in Hoboken, Bayonne, and Secaucus were enough to influence the makeup of those councils and thus affect votes on major issues from development to parking. Countywide, the Hudson County Democratic Organization declined to back incumbent sheriff Juan Perez for re-election – instead supporting one of Perez’s undersheriffs for the nod in the Democratic primary in June. Meanwhile, Bayonne Mayor Mark Smith, who’d ascended to his spot in a special election the year before, won again in May. One of his opponents, Assemblyman Anthony Chiappone, pleaded guilty in June to a charge of having filed a false campaign financing report in an election years earlier. Chiappone resigned his Assembly seat as of September. In Secaucus this past November, three Independent councilpeople backed by Mayor Michael Gonnelli easily won victories, showing the mayor’s strength. In Hoboken, Mayor Dawn Zimmer wants to sell Hoboken University Medical Center to private owners, if they can find a group who will keep the 160-year-old facility as a hospital. It was taken over by the city in 2007 after Bon Secours Health System considered closing it for financial reasons. However, the taxpayers were worried that they would be responsible for future losses, so Zimmer would like to see a private company run it. The county’s other hospitals include Palisades in North Bergen, Bayonne Medical Center, Jersey City Medical Center in that city, and Christ Hospital in Jersey City.

EMERGENCY SALE – Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer has developed an advisory committee to sell the Hoboken University Medical Center. The city, which guaranteed a $52 million bond to save the hospital from going out of business, is currently looking to sell the hospital to a private company.

SOLD – IN DECEMBER THE $15 MILLION SALE OF MEADOWLANDS HOSPITAL MEDICAL CENTER WAS APPROVED AFTER MONTHS OF SCRUTINY BY VARIOUS STATE AGENCIES. MHA, LLC PRINCIPAL WILLIAM VAZQUEZ (WITH GLASSES) ADMITTED IN JULY THAT THE SALE WAS BEING CLOSELY REVIEWED BECAUSE, IF APPROVED, THE HOSPITAL WOULD GO FROM A NONPROFIT OWNER (LIBERTYHEALTH SYSTEM) TO A FOR-PROFIT ONE (MHA). FOR SEVERAL MONTHS ONE STICKING POINT OF THE SALE HAD BEEN WHETHER ANY OF THE HOSPITAL’S 400 UNIONIZED EMPLOYEES, REPRESENTED BY THE HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AND ALLIED EMPLOYEES (HPAE), WOULD BE RETAINED AFTER THE SALE WAS APPROVED. IN SEPTEMBER THE UNION’S MEMBERSHIP, UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF HPAE LOCAL 5147 PRESIDENT JOANNE DUDSAK (PICTURED RIGHT) RATIFIED A FIVE-YEAR CONTRACT WITH MHA. IN THE FALL THE STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL, STATE HEALTH PLANNING BOARD, AND STATE DEPT. OF HEALTH AND SENIOR SERVICES ALL BACKED THE HOSPITAL’S SALE.

Education udson County’s children were treated to a buffet of new educational options this year, with a new dual-language charter school in Hoboken and a new superintendent of schools in West New York. As existing schools are renovated or expanded, students also learn to be better citizens, as anti-bullying workshops were the trend that ruled the day. What follows are some portraits of education in Hudson County this year.

Entertainment udson County is bursting with creative people, and 2010 saw dozens of art shows, concerts, festivals, and plays. Hoboken and Jersey City H continued hosting their art studio tours, and both towns also held art and music festivals. But the towns in North Hudson – Union City, West New York, North Bergen, and their neighbors – also saw a thriving art scene, with many galleries and theater troupes. Hudson County’s location across the river from New York City means that its towns can also pull their weight in concerts and comedy shows. Here are some photos from the year in entertainment.
