2011 JERSEY CITY ARTISTS STUDIO TOUR • 2
Jersey City’s creative riches will be on display at the Artists Studio Tour By Gene Ritchings Managing Editor n times of economic anxiety like these, when people are con cerned with practical matters like employment and higher taxes and uncertain about the future, art and aesthetic experience can seem like an indulgence. But in Jersey City on Oct. 1 and 2, visitors and residents can take a whole weekend to enjoy free art, music, and performances in many of the city’s most interesting buildings. Now in its 21st year, the Jersey City Artist Studio Tour will be “as big as ever,” according to Maryanne Kelleher, director of the city’s Division of Cultural Affairs. Each year, the Reporter newspapers publish this special insert that visitors can use as a guide as they to walk around this multi-cultural, bustling metropolis and satisfy their curiosity and aesthetic appetites.
I
Oct. 1 - 2 For the two day festival weekend (Oct.1 and 2, noon to 6 p.m. each day) visitors are bound to find something that suits their taste in music, film, digital arts, photography, painting, sculpture, dance, poetry and many other art forms while walking around New Jersey’s second major metropolis. The tour is presented by the City of Jersey City Division of Cultural Affairs and the arts organization Pro Arts, and is sponsored by entities that include The Hudson Reporter newspaper group. Cultural Affairs has had to struggle against numerous obstacles, some predictable – like reduced funding – and others unforeseen, like the flooding of their offices by Hurricane Irene, to get this year’s tour up and running. Nevertheless, the tour has added new artists and venues outside of Downtown, its traditional hub, and is expected to attract thousands of visitors from across the metropolitan area.
Where and when The Studio Tour begins on Friday night, Sept. 30, with a kickoff celebration at Mana Contemporary, 888 Newark Ave., from 6 to 10 p.m. The closing party for the tour is at Parlay Studios, 161 2nd St., on Sunday, Oct. 2, starting at 6 p.m. Both are free and Open to all. Anywhere there’s a wall, a window, or a space where art can be displayed, you’re likely to find some of the abundant creativity of the city on display. The 86 venues displaying creative work run the gamut from government buildings, established and new art galleries and exhibition spaces, taverns, schools, cafes, shop windows, office and apartment building lobbies, community centers, stores, churches, the Liberty Science Center, and the Newport Mall. The tour affords visitors countless opportunities to buy artwork that catches their fancy. And by visiting studios where the artists work, they’ll have the chance to mingle with the creators and talk to them about their work and their creative process. Thanks to a funding grant, Pro Arts will be running free shuttle buses on five different routes (included in this supplement) that will come close to all the tour’s locations.
A letter from the mayor
Welcome to Jersey City’s 21st Annual Artists Studio Tour. With hundreds of artists and dozens of studios, galleries and exhibitions open for tour weekend, the 2011 Jersey City Artists Studio continues to build upon its reputation as New Jersey’s premier showcase of emerging and established artists. The new Mana Contemporary Art Center joins the Studio Tour for the first time, hosting the Studio Tour Kick-Off Celebration and featuring open studios, curated exhibitions by Jersey City artists, as well as Mana Contemporary’s second major exhibition “Our Own Directions: 40 Years of Photorealism.” Also new for the 2011 Studio Tour is the Powerhouse Short Film Festival in the Powerhouse Arts District, featuring dozens of short independent films showing throughout Studio Tour weekend. As in years past, the Studio Tour is presented through a partnership between the local arts advocacy group Pro Arts and the Jersey City Division of Cultural Affairs. I would like to commend Pro Arts President Kay Kenny and Executive Director Sean Hollingsworth, as well as Jersey City Cultural Affairs Director Maryanne Kelleher and Jersey City Art Curator Greg Brickey for their hard work in organizing the 2011 Artists Studio Tour, and for their continued efforts on behalf of the City’s growing art community. Finally, the Jersey City Artists Studio Tour would not be possible without the friendship and assistance of the Hudson Reporter. Their annual Tour Guide is the product of much hard work and dedication, and I would like to extend my gratitude to publishers David Unger and Lucha Malato, Advertising Manager Tish Kraszyk, and the entire staff at the Hudson Reporter. Join us this weekend in celebrating the culture and creativity of Jersey City’s visual and performing arts community. Tour guides and maps will be available at City Hall and the Grove Street Path, and shuttle bus service will be available to and from many Tour venues free of cost throughout the weekend. Most importantly, please enjoy yourself and continue to support the arts in Jersey City. Sincerely,
Jerramiah T. Healy Mayor
Highlights New to the tour this year is the 1st Annual Jersey City Powerhouse Short Film Festival, running Sept. 30 to Oct 2, in tents at First and Provost and Bay and Provost streets in the Powerhouse Arts District, an historic warehouse district downtown about four blocks from the Grove Street PATH station. The program was assembled after canvassing city residents for suggestions. Tickets are $15 general admission and can be purchased at www.jcpowerhousefilmfest.com or at the site beginning one hour before each program. Everything else on the studio tour is free, according to Greg Brickey of the city’s Cultural Affairs division. Another major new attraction on this year’s tour is the Mana Contemporary Arts Center, 888 Newark Ave., “one of the most significant venues we’ve ever had,” Brickey said, with 100,000 square feet of space. A major photo realist exhibit which Opens Sept. 18 will run through the tour weekend. Parlay Studios, at 161 2nd St., will host the group exhibition from tour sponsor Pro Arts. With 27 artists listed as exhibitors, this is one of the largest collections of sculpture, paintings, prints, photography and digital art on the Tour. For more information, visit www.parlay studios.com or www.proartsjerseycity.org. Other large exhibitions will be on display at locations such as the Curious Matter Gallery, 272 Fifth St.; the Pershing Field Community Center, on the Summit Avenue side of Pershing Field, and the New Jersey City University galleries, at 2039 Kennedy Blvd. City Hall, 280 Grove St., will also host a group exhibit of about a dozen artists. In the same venue, on the ground floor, visit Jersey City’s version of “The City Love Project.” And in the Caucus Room is “Summer Away, Part One,” a group exhibition from the Jersey City Arts High School program. Finally, in one of the few examples of political art on the tour, the City Council Chambers will be the place to view “The Pipe,” sponsored by the No Gas Pipeline coalition. Multiple screenings will be available of a short film depicting the struggle of a small Irish village to resist Shell Oil’s attempt to lay a gas pipeline through their community.
