2011 HOBOKEN ARTISTS STUDIO TOUR • 2
Welcome to the Hoboken Artists’ Studio Tour! Visitors can enjoy creative works all around town on Nov. 5 and 6 For the 31st year, The Hoboken Artists’ Studio Tour is welcoming visitors to check out all types of artists and performers in their studios around the milesquare city. It’s a chance to meet and enjoy the works of the creative people who give an artistic pulse to one of the East Coast’s most exciting towns. Visitors can use the map in this section of the Hoboken Reporter to tour the various locations in any order. The event runs Nov. 5 and 6 from noon to 6 p.m. each day. The Reporter is a co-sponsor of the event. Aside from enjoying the paintings, sculpture, photography, drawing, music, spoken word, and other creative art forms, visitors can see the city of Hoboken at its finest. Some of the locations are unique buildings such as former factories that were converted to artists’ workshops, so the locations are artistic in their own ways. In addition, you can stop into the mile-square city’s dozens of restaurants and shops to make for a perfect Saturday or Sunday afternoon (or both!) Popular stops on the tour, with many artists showing their work in one place, include the Neumann Leather Building, the Monroe Center, and new art galleries that have opened recently. One gallery is even debuting during the weekend of the tour. Two new galleries – The Lana Santorelli Gallery (628 Washington St.) and
Gallery 1200 (1200 Washington St.) opened this year and are full of surprises. A new gallery, “Artistocrat,” will soon open in the southwest corner of town at 49 Harrison St. Its founder will host a soft opening on the weekend of the Artists’ Studio Tour. Geri Fallo, administrator of Cultural Affairs for the city of Hoboken, noted, “We’ll have an information table at City Hall (94 Washington St.) on both days of the tour, where visitors can pick up the tour guides and volunteers will be available to answer questions. There will be an exhibit at City Hall featuring 16 artists.” The city will also provide a free shuttle bus service “the Art Hop,” that will stop at various locations throughout Hoboken, especially near the major tour stops along the map. Much of the art featured in the tour will be available for sale, as well. While you’re enjoying the art, why not support the artists and purchase some of their creations? The tour is in its 31st year. Meredith Lippman, who now works as the program development specialist at the Hudson County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs, was one of the founders. “Hoboken had artists in 1981 but they weren’t necessarily very visible at the time,” Lippman said. “So what we did was create a Hoboken studio tour. We
KRYSTYNA STROINSKI
met for about six months to start it, produced all the advertising, the maps, the posters, and that basically started the studio tour.” For more information, check this
pullout section and watch the breaking news at hudson reporter.com. Or contact Geri Fallo at City Hall at (201) 420-2207.

Letter from the Mayor Welcome to Hoboken’s 31st Annual Artists Studio Tour!
JOE EPSTEIN
With an eclectic mix of over 150 artists from all over the tri-state area exhibiting in over 30 locations all throughout the City, this year’s tour promises to be a great one. You can visit artists working in their studios or stroll along our charming, vibrant streets and stop in one of the many local establishments that are taking part in the tour. Many artists will also be displaying their work at City Hall, which has always been a traditional venue for this event. The Artists Studio Tour is a unique opportunity to explore our City and discover all it has to offer. Whether you are walking along our waterfront with its stunning views of Manhattan or discovering our picturesque neighborhoods, you are sure to enjoy your time in Hoboken. The artist community is such an important part of what makes Hoboken unique, and my Administration has been working hard to protect it. The Neumann Leather site was recently declared an Area in Need of Rehabilitation - an important tool for preserving the
industrial arts use and historic character of the buildings. And we fought hard to make sure that the new owners of the Monroe Center share our vision for preserving the artist tenants and expanding the arts use of the facility. As in past years, our Division of Cultural Affairs has worked hand in hand with the Hudson Reporter to help stage one of Hoboken’s most anticipated cultural events. Their teamwork is greatly appreciated and guaranteed to make the tour a big hit. We would also like to thank our other sponsor, the Hudson County Division of Cultural & Heritage Affairs and the Monroe Center for the Arts for their ongoing support of the studio tour. So please come and join us on November 5th and 6th from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. for the 31st Annual Hoboken Artists Tour. Sincerely, Mayor Dawn Zimmer

NOV. 5 & 6•11 ARTWORK BY SANTIAGO COHEN
SATURDAY & SUNDAY NOON - 6PM
31ST ANNIVERSARY Hoboken is a dynamic and vibrant city due in part to the many artists who live and work in our community. We appreciate their commitment to nurturing the cultural canvas that makes Hoboken so special. The Hoboken Artists Studio Tour is a day to thank them and admire their creativity and sense of self-expression. The Studio Tour has become one of Hoboken’s premier cultural events, showcasing the talents of local artists. This year we are celebrating the 31st Anniversary of this event, and I am proud to acknowledge the accomplishments of all the artists participating. Today is also the perfect opportunity to explore Hoboken’s charming neighborhoods, unique shops, outdoor cafes, rich historic architecture and beautiful waterfront parks as you walk from studio to studio. This is a special day for Hoboken, and I hope you will take advantage of everything our community has to offer.
