irst, congratulations. You’re one of the lucky ones to get your hands on The Hudson Reporter’s very first, bi-annual edition of Hudson Reporter Family. Second, allow us to explain what you can expect to find here. We know how it goes when you find yourself in need of a pediatrician in a pinch and stare open-mouthed at a computer screen full of thousands of internet listings that mean absolutely nothing when there’s a medical need to fill. We’ve been there when our kids or our kids’ kids or our friends’ kids suddenly develop a dire need to hone their ninja skills that must be met with karate instruction, or when they’ve just seen an episode of ‘Bun Heads’ at their B-F-F’s house and will not rest until they, too, are enrolled in a ballet class, or five. Perhaps your tween or teen has skyrocketed your blood pressure into the ether with a new love interest and you’d like to suggest a more cultural (and very public) option for “hanging out” at one of the local museums or parks. During the day, of course. While we humans of the adult sort have developed the sort of patience required to wait, say, a day or two before fulfilling a need – be it practical or frivolous – our under-18 counterparts, by way of nature, have not necessarily caught up. So what do you do when you live in Hudson County and you’re a new parent and think you have no idea how to be a new parent and could really use a seasoned parent to talk to? Or when your child is rapidly approaching the age when school will give you a moment of respite, but you love them so much you have to be absolutely sure you’ve made the best choice from all the options out there? And by the way, what are all the options out there?

HUDSON REPORTER

Hudson Reporter Family is here to help

We’ve done the legwork for you, because we know how rare time for legwork can become once “you” turns into “family.” We’ve taken the time to cull through the ample wealth of fun, useful, practical, not-so-practical, and all around handy services in Hoboken and Jersey City available to those who find themselves in need of places to go and things to do with that significantly more energetic part of the population that will, sooner than later, make up the next generation.

Friendly user’s guide

We’ve broken it down by category in a way that seems most logical when logic may seem to have flown the coop. There are two main categories: “Activities,” and “Services,” which include the listings of both for- and non-profit organizations. “Activities” will provide you with the things you and the young-uns might want to do, from recreational sports and physical activity to places to play and be entertained; in other words, where to go to have fun. What about parks? You pass them every day, you know they’re there, but what exactly do they offer? We will tell you. “Services” allows you to find the things you need to do. We offer a comprehensive list of schools – including public, charter, and private – and the things that complement your child, tween, or teen’s education like tutoring, or special needs supplements, for instance. Day care is an especially touchy subject for most parents. In our guide, we give you a comprehensive list of places to check out and determine what best suits your family’s specific needs. Hudson Reporter Family has also compiled a list of pediatric and family focused medical services from primary care to dental to mental health. Does your child hate the dentist? Perhaps a waiting room full of conveniently distracting toys and televisions will ease the fear.

A good place to start

No one, tragically, has come up with the magical handbook for seeing a kid safely and happily and successfully through to the big bad world of adulthood, but we can at least point you to a few places that are sure to help you on your journey. We hope you keep us around for a few months and that we serve as the guide we strive to be during times of need, whether it be for fundamentals, or for just plain fun. This is in fact our trial run, so please feel free to email us with suggestions at gpope@hudsonreporter.com for our second annual edition of Hudson Reporter Family. We are here, after all, to help you as best we can.
