host of brick-and-mortar buildings offer communities with lots of amenities. These residences rival those in Manhattan or the ever-popular Brooklyn. Waterfront properties, as well as inland developments, feature amenities such as health clubs, pools, movie theaters, community kitchens, and concierge services. Those looking to be neighborly and make friends will appreciate the recent trend, which provides meeting space and recreational sports leagues, creating neighborhoods within buildings. Luxury rentals or condos from West New York to Bayonne are a bargain compared to those in Manhattan, giving Hudson County dwellers more bang for their buck.

steeped in history Hudson County has a rich history that dates back centuries. It was f irst home of the Lenne Lenape before Europeans made their way over in the 17th century. Henry Hudson, for whom the county and river are named, established a claim f or the area in 1609 when anchoring his ships at Harsimus Cove and Weehawken Cove. In the 1630s and ‘40s homesteads were established at Communipaw, Harsimus, Paulus Hook, Hoebuck, Constable Hook, and Awiehaken. integral role in the Underground Railroad, with four routes converging in Jersey City. For years, the waterfront was a center of manufacturing and commerce. Farm goods were transported from Hudson County to other locales in the Garden State. After the U.S. Civil War, it was a rail hub for lines stretching from New York City to San Francisco. The waterfront along Hoboken in the 1940s became a major point of embarkation for troops from all over the country heading to the battlef ields of World War I and II. Many historic attractions are still visited today, including what was once Hoboken Elysian Fields where, according to legend, the f irst organized game of baseball was played, and of course the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are off the coast of Jersey City. 90 Columbus Amenity Deck Photo courtesy of Robert Kelly, CAHN Communications
so much to do There are plenty of other attractions to choose from including Pole Position Raceway, Skyway Golf Course, the Lincoln Park Fountain, Liberty Science Center, and Spirit of New Jersey cruises in Jersey City; and in Hoboken Sinatra’s home, Carlo’s Bakery, and Hoboken Cove Boathouse. Hudson County is also home to talented artists, musicians, and innovators, featuring public murals, designated arts districts, live music at Jersey City’s White Eagle Hall, and galleries showcasing new local artists all across the county. Towns go out of their way to throw community events such as street fairs, concerts, innovation expositions, Shakespeare in the Park, and movies under the stars. Jersey City offers outdoor festivals at Grove Square, and an ongoing animated street scene on its pedestrian mall on Newark Avenue. Groove on Grove is one of a number of outdoor seasonal events taking place in Jersey City. Scores continued on page 14

the getaway Many people move to Hudson County because they work in Manhattan but don’t necessarily want to live in the city. The good news is the wide range of public transportation choices. Options include the PATH train with stations in Jersey City and Hoboken, which go to midtown and downtown Manhattan and connect to the New York City subway. There is also the Hudson Bergen Light Rail that stops in North Bergen, Union City, Weehawken, Hoboken, Jersey City, and Bayonne which is slated to expand into Englewood in the coming years. Another option are NJ Transit buses, which have multiple stops and terminals, throughout the county and into the city. For those who enjoy the peace of being on the water, NY Waterway offers a ferry service to the city from Hoboken, Weehawken, and Jersey City. Bayonne is on the horizon. Many Hudson County residents take advantage of Uber and Lyft, and several county municipalities have bicycle- and car-sharing programs that are continually expanding. After the state legalized electric scooters, Hoboken adding an e-scooter-sharing service.
