The art of Hoboken Studio tour showcasing city’s artists is 30 years old Gene Ritchings Managing Editor

n a city as teeming with creativity as Hoboken, you can pack a lot of art into one square mile, and a walking tour along its tree-lined autumnal streets is the best way to see it. That was the idea behind the founding of the Hoboken Artist Studio Tour, and it’s time again for the annual weekend long event, as the tour begins its fourth decade. At its inception, the tour featured only 15 artists. Thirty years later, it boasts ten times that many, and is a bigger than ever celebration of the city’s creative energies. The 30th annual Hoboken Artist Studio Tour runs on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 6 and 7 from noon to 6

p.m. and is sponsored by Mayor Dawn Zimmer, the City of Hoboken, the Hoboken Reporter and The Hudson County Division of Cultural & Heritage Affairs. So grab a map and view scores of exhibits and visit studios where all kinds of art is created. Many of the artworks will be for sale, so don’t forget your checkbook. Creativity will be on display in a multitude of forms and venues. Many of Hoboken’s outdoor cafes and multi-cultural restaurants will display art and will offer brunch, lunch, and dinner specials throughout the day. Some establishments will even offer live performances.
lage and paintings on silk. Some of the featured art this year includes Tim Daly’s realist paintings and drawings, Adam Saynuk’s macro photography and his interactive “Mood Book,” Frank Hanavan’s acrylic landscapes of Hoboken, photographic montage by Roslyn Rose, Kenneth Mueller’s balance stone sculptures, photography by Virginia Rolston Parrott, Doug Auld’s large realistic paintings, furniture restorations by Chapeau Design, a group exhibition by the Paterson Arts Council, “Wishing Tree Installation” by students from the Elysian Charter School, and much more.

A walking tour Even though there are more than 41 stops on the tour, it’s designed so you can walk from one studio or group exhibition to the next. Or, if you prefer, you can take the free shuttle bus, which will be stopping at 7 or 8 locations around the mile-square city, including City Hall, the PATH station, the Neumann Leather Building, 38 Jackson Street (The Pudding Factory), Hoboken Historical Museum, 720 Monroe Street Arts Center and more. You’ll find a map of the attractions inside this supplement and they’ll also be available at City Hall, 94 Washington St., between 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on the days of the tour. As diverse as the art itself, the tour’s popularity draws artists from far beyond Hoboken. From the shores of foreign lands to our own metropolitan area, you will find over 150 artists and their work, representing an exciting variety of media and design. Visitors will have a chance to meet the artists, photographers, sculptors and artisans in their own studios, where they can witness the creative process at work.
A diversity of styles The media will range from classical figurative realism and abstract expressionism to sculptures and photographic computer generated images, oil paintings, watercolors and acrylics, multi media col-
Friday night a preview party will be held at 918 Willow Ave. from 6 – 8 p.m. and on Saturday you’ll find live music and a reception there all day long, plus a variety of paintings and drawings. Art will be on display in 41 locations, large and small. At City Hall, 94 Washington St. (open both days and barrier-free) the works will range from paintings in oils and acrylics to mixed media pieces and assemblages, watercolors, landscapes and portraits, realism, impression and surrealism. At the Lib Art Gallery, 1317 Willow Ave. (open both days) the exhibits will include reclaimed functional art, ceramics, photography, and mixed media. Some of the biggest exhibits will be available at the city’s largest and best-known artist studio addresses: the Monroe Arts center, 720 Monroe St., where in addition to artworks, poetry and music and discussions will be available; the Friary, 619 Jefferson St., where spoken word, music and films will be offered; and the Neumann Leather building at 300 Observer Hwy. The Hoboken Artists Studio Tour is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the the Arts, administered by the Hudson County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs/Tourism Development and by the County of Hudson, Thomas A. DeGise, County Executive, and the Board of Chosen Freeholders.

With an eclectic mix of artists from all over the tri-state area exhibiting in more than 40 locations all throughout the City, this year’s tour is sure to be one of the largest and most successful ever. You can visit artists working in their studios or stroll along our charming, vibrant streets and stop in one of the many local establishments that are taking part in the tour. Many artists will also be displaying their work at City Hall, which has always been a traditional venue for this event. The artists’ studio tour is a unique opportunity to explore our City and discover all it has to offer. Whether you are walking along our waterfront with its stunning views of Manhattan or discovering our picturesque neighborhoods, you are sure to enjoy your time in Hoboken.
As in past years, our Division of Cultural Affairs has worked hand in hand with the Hudson Reporter to help stage one of Hoboken’s most anticipated cultural events. Their teamwork is greatly appreciated and guaranteed to make the tour a big hit. We would also like to thank our other sponsors, the Hudson County Division of Cultural & Heritage Affairs and the Monroe Center for the Arts, for their contributions to this year’s artists’ studio tour. So please come and join us on November 6th and 7th from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. for the 30th Annual Hoboken Artists Studio Tour. Sincerely, Mayor Dawn Zimmer

Hoboken is a dynamic and vibrant community today due in part to the many artists who live and work here. Their commitment to nurturing the cultural canvas that makes Hoboken so special is very much appreciated. The Artists’ Studio Tour is an opportunity to thank them and admire their creativity and sense of self-expression. This event has become one of Hoboken’s premier cultural showcases for the talents of local artists. This year we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the tour, and I am proud to acknowledge the accomplishments of all the artists participating.
