Hoboken’s a great place to shop Mile-square city growing in popularity, population

W

ith boundless choices for dining, nightlife, and shopping, Hoboken has become one of the most popular cities in New Jersey, not just for customers and tourists, but for those who want to live here full time. The 2010 Census revealed that Hoboken grew by almost 30 percent in the last decade to 50,005 residents. The mile-square city is easily walkable and boasts main shopping areas both near the waterfront and on the west side of town. New Jersey Transit buses carry passengers to and from New York City into the Hoboken Terminal downtown, stopping at many intersections on the city’s main business road, Washington Street. Visitors also make their way to Hoboken by way of the PATH train, NJ Transit trains, highways, and the New York Waterway ferries. The city’s name recognition has also grown due to the large number of celebrities and reality shows that call the mile-square city home. PHOTOS BY TRACEY FEDOR

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning, New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, and New Jersey Nets players Sasha Vujacic and Kris Humphries all reside in Hoboken. Hoboken’s sights have also appeared on many reality shows, including The Real Housewives of New Jersey, Boys to Manzo, Love and Hip Hop, and of course, The Cake Boss. The Cake Boss, which premiered in 2009 on The Learning Channel, launched Carlo’s Bakery, the longtime downtown Washington Street establishment, into the national spotlight. Visitors from throughout the country often line Hoboken’s Washington Street, sometimes waiting for more than three or four hours for a chance to shop in the store. The small businesses of Hoboken recently joined together to hold a “Shop Hoboken” initiative during one weekend in June, which included 36 stores teaming up to offer discounts. The city also offered a free shuttle bus as part of the promotion. While parking is always an issue in Hoboken, the city is looking to encourage other modes of transportation for getting in and around. Bike lanes and “Corner Cars,” a rental car program that places Hertz cars on the street, have emerged in the city, offering alternatives to driving. Hoboken’s real estate market is one of the more successful ones in the state. Hoboken has emerged as an alternative to the expensee HOBOKEN page 9

sive lifestyle of living in New York City. The city remains a diverse area where residents old and new live together. The city has a very proud “born and raised” crowd, as well as an emerging population of professionals who are drawn to the city’s new developments. The waterfront area is a large draw for many residents and visitors, as thousands made their way into the city for the 4th of July celebration earlier this month for a view of the Macy’s fireworks on the Hudson River. Attractions include the city’s downtown Pier A Park and the brand new Pier C Park, located between Third and Fourth streets on Sinatra Drive. There is also a park named after the city’s favorite son, Frank Sinatra. Sinatra was born and raised in Hoboken. City Clerk James Farina annually serves cake for Sinatra’s birthday in City Hall, and some stores and restaurants have pictures and music from the world-renowned singer. The city recently held one of its many free summer events in the park, a Sinatra impersonating contest. The city is also dealing with the prospect of no longer becoming just a city for young, single adults. After Eli Manning’s wife gave birth to a baby girl, the couple expanded their Tea Building apartment, according to reports. Since not all families can afford two units in the Tea Building, the city is likely to look to developers to build three-bedroom apartments to accommodate the growing population of families in the city.
