of 2008, it was with the basic understanding that together the arts and small business help weave the fabric of a community and distinguish one community from the next. For instance, Hudson is home to Walking the Dog Theater, Time and Space Limited, Vasilow’s Confectionery and Spotty Dog Books & Ale; and the Richard B. Fisher Center for Performing Arts, the George Cole Antiques Auction center and Taste Budd’s Cafe are unique to Red Hook – two glimpses at the diversity of businesses and venues that draw visitors to a community. From Rhinebeck to Kinderhook, and Kingston to Coxsackie, similar but equally distinctive examples of culturally appealing communities exist. With Hudson Valley Mercantile, we work to support the synergistic relationship between business and culture in the Hudson Valley and celebrate the fabric of community that together they weave.

synergistic efforts of business and culture in the Hudson Valley, and celebrate the fabric of community that together they weave.
Whether the reader is a full-time resident, weekender or just passing through, Mercantile acts as a concierge, pointing readers to local attributes, entertainment venues and events of interest. We unabashedly promote local businesses and celebrate the people behind the scenes by showcasing the places and faces that make each community a unique gem in the great cultural mosaic that is the Hudson Valley.

A vibrant arts and culture industry helps local businesses thrive. It is well-documented that the arts are essential to a healthy economy and cultural life. A 2007 study, Arts & Economic Prosperity III: The Econiomic Impact of Nonprofit Arts and Culture Organizations and Their Audiences, demonstrates that the nonprofit arts and culture industry is an economic driver in communities – a growth industry that supports jobs, generates government revenue, and is the cornerstone of tourism. “This study is a myth buster,” said Robert L. Lynch, president and CEO of Americans for the Arts. “Most Americans understand that the arts improve our quality of life. This study demonstrates that the arts are an industry that stimulates the economy in cities and towns across the country.”
In April 2009, David Colby, President of the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce, presented to the Columbia County Board of Supervisors findings from a study commissioned by Perform Columbia, a collective of Columbia County performing arts organizations. The study showed that the performing arts make an economic impact of greater than $8 million dollars each year on the local economy. Hudson Valley Mercantile looks to support and promote this important economic driver and to help raise the level of awareness of the cultural attributes of the communites we serve.

We approach Hudson Valley Mercantile as an ongoing conversation between neighbors. As such, we boast exclusive local columns and features, and samples of dynamic visual art and photography produced by local artists, business people and other community stakeholders. Each month of the year, our contributors share their views of a seasonal theme captured in their own words, through their lenses, or by their hands. This content serves as the contextual backdrop of the season and lends a diverse mix to entertain our readers and complement our comprehensive cultural calendars of events.
