FASHION DESiGN ART

MESSAGE PRESiDENT FROM THE

Here we have the work of over 500 graduating Art and Design students—every one of them a marvel! Imagine the challenges they faced this year. Forced by the pandemic to work from their homes, denied the in-studio, shoulder-to-shoulder, hands-on learning experience they expected, they nevertheless forged ahead, defying all obstacles. They created makeshift work stations in their bedrooms, basements, kitchen corners and other unlikely locations. Focused, hardworking and energetic, they applied their ingenuity to learn, explore, experiment and achieve. And as we see from this catalogue, they succeeded. The work in this catalogue represents 16 of the School of Art and Design’s programs. In it we not only see the students’ finished products, but also images of how those projects evolved. These images help to reveal the creative process and the students’ individuality. Through it all, we sense their resilience and determination. Indeed, this vibrant catalogue— with its bright bold colors—pays homage to their optimism and extraordinary strength. I offer congratulations to these students and to the families and friends who supported them throughout this difficult year. Congratulations as well to the stalwart Art and Design faculty whose own skills and ingenuity rose to the pandemic’s challenge and provided guidance to their students with diligence and care. The Fashion Design BFA artwork represents the best of the best. The original design illustrations and presentation layouts were selected from each concentration area including Children’s Wear, Intimate Apparel, Knitwear, Special Occasion and Sportswear. Graduating students design, create, develop, and prepare 2D original visuals into 3D professionally executed looks. All Fashion Design students incorporate their extensive fashion design art, CAD, journaling and art portfolio knowledge when developing a body of original work. In addition to creating professionally executed versions of their original designs on multiple platforms, each student has an advanced ability to communicate their conceptual ideas and design process. Through this process of fashion design realization and visual communication, each student’s personal vision evolve and comes to life.

My thesis is a peek into a world I created in my mind that I can live in forever, my “utopia.” Here I explored the idea of what it means to create and express freely, make mistakes, and appreciate the journey along the way. Each illustrated piece is made using a mix of hand and digital drawings, painting, letting goof the outcome, and following my instincts from start to finish. In doing so, I was able to find that part of myself that remembers why I love the tool of art so much as an unbridled expression, and give a piece of that happiness to whoever views it as well : )

From an early age, I have been surrounded by visual art, architecture, and technical drawings. In these we find straight lines, geometric figures, and angular cuts that reflect an interesting aesthetic, carrying the organic expression of nature. This has heavily influenced my work by creating some of my designs to push the boundaries of wearable fashion through the combination of volume, shapes, lines, and colors. Just like an architect evokes different emotions in the spaces they create, I aim to achieve the same with my garments through the realization of unique pieces. I chose Special Occasion because throughout time it has told a unique narrative, from the evolution of society and culture, to being a form of expression for people around the world — all accomplished through garment masterpieces. This is a story I want to be a part of.

In Buddhism, Samsāra is the “suffering-laden, continuous cycle of life, death, and rebirth, without beginning or end.” In this project, I chose three Buddhist sacred sites in three different countries to achieve a remote pilgrimage. Buddhism and Buddhist elements have accompanied my birth and growth. Every time I travel far away, I will pray to the Buddha statue at home for all to go well. Intimate apparel is where my passion lies. I always want to combine these two things, which are both soft and sacred. For this collection, I don’t want to simply incorporate Buddhist elements and art into my design, but to express my understanding of the purity, supremeness, and endlessness of lives through colors, shapes, and patterns.

BIOMIMICRY

STATEMENT

VICTORIA CHUZHINA Nature has always been a source of inspiration for me. My thesis, “biomimicry,” is derived from a design philosophy that informs how things are made, so that their form and material composition may be in harmony with the ecosystems they inhabit. Nature has her own system of design; she is the original architect of our planet and holds the key to solving the world’s most complex crises. This collection embodies the practice of biomimicry, looking to the environment for inspiration of shape, color, silhouette, fabrication, and movement. Organic shapes, such as plants, trees, beehives, and fungus, heavily influenced silhouette development and garment construction techniques. The color palette consists of shades of mauve, neutral brown, beige, and a bold pop of orange — colors you would find hidden in the forest. This is my vision for the future: A world where humans design more sustainably and organically, not around nature, but with nature.

Ms. Chanel rescued women from the deformed aesthetics of Europe. She tore off the waistband and skirt that bound women; took off the heavy hat and jewelry, stating that women should wear what they like. I am deeply impressed by that. However, whenever I look back at the portrait paintings of medieval Europe, I am still shocked by the costumes of the characters in the paintings. Therefore, I try to integrate the style of traditional European costumes with the influence of Ms. Chanel. Inspiration came from a song named “Viva La Vida,” which depicted the French Revolution contemplating the funeral of the past and the longing for the future. This collection is drawn with digital media. I created several patterns and one motif to express the beauty of details so that customers can directly feel the theme.

To me, designing is an expression of the mind. We think of small ideas every day and catch glimpses of beauty in life that spark the need to express emotions. When designing my collections, I was first inspired by my commute to the city and the graffiti on the walls. I later explored the artist Basquiat, and how his work was an expression that stirred up controversy. As a designer, I wanted to do the same and make a collection that allows girls to express their own creativity. I used Copic markers, colored pencils, and marker paper to achieve the first layer of rendering. I then took scans into Photoshop to adapt more techniques. Growing up in New York, I found it most important to highlight that girls should speak up, stand out, and wear whatever they want and what makes them feel the happiest — and I did.

The inspiration for this collection was in different forms of love according to the ancient Greeks, specifically “Ludus,” “Philautia,” and “Eros.” For my daywear lingerie line, I chose the inspiration of Ludus, which means a flirtatious and playful love. I used sheers and cutouts to convey the sensuality of Ludus, which I thought was perfect for a daytime lingerie collection. For the loungewear portion of this collection, I chose the philosophy of Philautia, which is a form of self love. Philautia is essential for any relationship we can only love others if we truly love ourselves and we can only care for others if we truly care for ourselves. And for the final part of this collection, I was inspired by Eros for the sleepwear pieces. Eros is the sensual, passionate love and the origin of the word “erotic.”

ECE SENA ERCANLI During the chaotic quarantine summer, I stayed at home and questioned the beginning and the end of everything. I found the answer in the mystic world of numbers. The answer was Zero. “Zero” is a collection I themed after the mystic nature of the number zero. Zero as a number identifies the beginning and the end. It is the only number that is endless and has no meaning at the same time. My collection, “Zero,” took seed in the mystic and intangible world of numbers and was translated into garments with embroidery, beading, and texture.

I am Inspired by closing one door and opening another while infusing very current and relevant components from our political/social climate. “I am a young woman who experienced sexual assault,” and from this trauma, history, and misfortune, my design thesis was formed: “From pain comes beauty.” From those experiences I struggled to understand that it’s my body and my choice. The silhouettes I designed are cinched, fitted, or unisex because there are days when I wanted to take my power back and others when I wanted to hide. The androgynous figures indicate this as an inclusive collection; this abuse can happen to anyone. To express this idea, there are tailored and corsetry details, and the comfort of knits and puffer shapes. To address our current industry’s devastating and destructive environmental impact, transformative silhouettes, from garments to accessories, and sustainable fabrics are the frame of this collection.

MAXIMALISM Procreate

STATEMENT

HEATHER FERRANTE For my seventh semester, I thought about life after the pandemic and pictured it to be a time where people would not want to pass up an opportunity to express themselves. Most of us have been at home wearing sweats for the past year: It is time to revamp. This pandemic has made everyone want to go out and get dressed up and celebrate life. We want to make up for lost time. We want more color, more volume, more drama and expression. We will take any excuse to dress up! We made it through an extraordinarily hard year, and now it is time for a renaissance, a rebirth! And so, I chose maximalism as my inspiration because I predict that a reformation of fashion is on the verge of happening here in the 2020s, a repeat of the history after the pandemic in 1918 — the roaring ’20s.

GABRIELA REIS GOMES This collection, “Root 2021,” was inspired by plant roots, specifically by the illustrations from a book titled “The Ecological Relations of Roots” by John E. Weaver. These illustrations are quite alluring so I wanted to use them and their unexpected nature in detail throughout the three-delivery collection. The collection combines structured silhouettes with simple yet significant details. Additionally, this is a collection inspired by nature, so sustainability was a fundamental part of choosing materials. The majority of the materials used are organic cotton, linen, eco-friendly polyester fibers (made from recycled water bottles), and bio-based leather made from apple peels. This minimalist collect-ion is a result of the situation we were and still are in. It places importance on the simpler shapes and materials that can be enhanced with minimalist ideas and details.

My religion and gender identity are two things that I hold very close. Those two ideas often clash with one another, due to the stigma of being incompatible. However, that is not the case. For my collection, I wanted to take those two ideas and combine them. Just as they both are a part of my life. I was inspired by genderless fashion and art in the Islamic world to create these looks. I wanted to showcase that religion and gender expression are both what you make of them, not what someone else tells you they are. The mixing of masculine and feminine elements, along with the pops of color was used to break down the idea of how genderless clothing should look, especially within children’s wear. This collection was created to challenge what fashion is really meant for and how it should be labeled.

TAMANNA JAIN Growing up in India, I have memories of my childhood, playing with friends and siblings, surrounded by beautiful flowers and trees all around us. When I returned back to India last year because of the pandemic, I felt disconnected from nature more than I have ever felt before. I had a desire to relive those childhood memories. “AXIAL” is a collection that was built out of the desire to coexist with nature in every way possible. It is a collection in which every life form thrives in celebration and coexistence with one another. In order to obtain this idea, I designed leaves on plain fabrics, as if emerging from within the person wearing them. The flowers bloom in the dark, boldly expressing without hesitation. They become an identity, a part of the person. “AXIAL” is my artistic approach to expressing my love for nature.

It turns out that, in a world where people are lost in anxiety, there are still a few who live such a simple and leisurely life under the washed blue sky… and that’s why I started developing this children’s wear collection to spread these indescribable feelings to others. The Tibetan people, who live in the highest regions on Earth, isolated from the chaos of the world, still live in the way their ancestors did...having the earth as one’s mat and the sky as one’s tent...

JISEON JUNG The essence of this art work was inspired by “War crisis and hope.” The most important goal for me, regardless of the good results, was to deliver a message. I was born in the last divided nation in the world, and I wanted to comfort and convey hope to those suffering from war all over the world. People living in destroyed cities were the source of inspiration for all the design details, concepts, colors, and mediums. The collapsing shape of the building is disproportionate in the design and construction of the work; the impoverished city is the photograph concept; the blackened buildings and ash are black hand dyeing. For a light but prominent sense of organization, the hand-knitted work was elaborately done with charcoal yarn. I could achieve this piece because of continuous thinking, steady research, and belief in myself.

“Bread and circuses” is the Roman idea that, if a society is distracted and entertained, then thepublic will not question bigger issues that lie under the surface. Inspired by movements like Black Lives Matter, Trans Rights are Human Rights, Climate Change is Real, #MeToo, etc., this collection aims to show how such movements are buried by society, using circus silhouettes to mask what is really going on below. The circus-stripe print featured in the garments, designed for the collection, is made up of phrases from recent social movements that create the red stripes through microscopic font, giving the illusion that these movements remain hidden. The silhouettes feature in the collection draw inspiration from the ruff collars worn by vintage clowns, braided trim found in garments representative of ringmasters, and burlesque ensembles resembling those worn by performers.

NEVER FOREVER: Inspired by a personal cathartic moment, this work explores the meaning that nothing in this world is permanent. There is truly almost nothing of this world that you can completely say “never” or “forever” to. In the end, everything changes and ends. This delivery is inspired by “wabi sabi,” the Japanese philosophy of accepting and appreciating the nature of imperfection, impermanence, and incompleteness in the world. I have explored two ideas belonging to wabi sabi: kintsugi (the Japanese art of mending broken pottery pieces by embracing their imperfection to create even stronger and more beautiful pieces of art), and “boro” (the Japanese way of repairing through stitching and patchwork to extend a garment’s life). Kintsugi is interpreted by fabric manipulations using topstitching on two different materials to create “cracks.” And boro is reimagined through hand embroidery and patchwork embellishment, using scrap fabrics to underline my commitment to sustainability.

The inspiration for my collection was the idea of distortion, which by definition is the alteration of the original shape of something. In the digital world in which we find ourselves so completely ensconced, I am constantly confronted with distortion, whether it’s associated with media, art, or people’s biased opinions. My interest was piqued by how software like Photoshop and other image editing apps could easily change the appearance of anything, therefore creating altered results that may be deceiving to the viewer. The process started by using distorted filters on regular objects. The distortion filters were then applied to my designs and drapes to find new silhouettes and possibilities. I experimented with the distortion process on the plaids and prints on the figure, creating distorted “floating plaids” on the body with different materials. The plaid fabric manipulation was moved and reshaped on the body so as to show movement.

The artwork was created entirely in digital format. My silhouette was inspired by the expressionism film “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.” The settings of the film externalize the turgid emotions of the character through the various deformed shapes and warped lines within the space. In terms of the concept and forms, I was deeply affected by Noguchi’s sculpture. I consider artistic exploration to be not only the study of conceptual ideas, but also the path of understanding myself. I used asymmetrical color blocking to have fabrics intersect yet contrast with each other. This represents the metamorphosis from encountering the obscurity of cultural identity, to realizing my identity and awakening my inner self-recognition as an Asian woman living in the Western world. This collection with multiple style lines further expresses the mixed emotions that I have gone through duringthe process of a girl independently entering sophisticated adulthood.

When I start a collection, the inspiration starts with stories from my imagination. For my thesis collection, “Machine and Real,” I conceptualized anotherpossibility for humanity’s future. The development of artificial intelligence leads many to believe that humanity will become obsolete. However, in my story, they are one. Artificial intelligence will be the future human: A species of advanced and evolved beings. I used the colors blue and silver, stiff fabrics, pleated structures, and the detail of standing piping to show a cold, firm surface of artificial intelligence. Soft fabrics and fluid structures represent warm, soft, human-like skin. The colors red and beige represent the pattern of blood vessels. In my aesthetic, I would like to create stunning and wearable garments that pursue a perfect balance between sophisticated elegance and playful innocence.

I was born in Beijing, China then came to the U.S. when I was 13. Growing up in two extremely different cultures and being a libra have definitely influenced me in my designing process. I found “balance” as the key word that represent all my works, where I would normally first explore polar opposites materials, silhouettes, concepts, and inspirations between traditional & futuristic, feminine & masculine, soft & edgy, east & west, streetwear & couture… and then combine elements from both to find the harmony to express the complicity of human beings. As a designer and a customer, I believe people should be able to wear something that does not only convey one character trait but a mixed flavor to represent our true self that is free of gender or any sort of labeling.

PEKING OPERA iPad

STATEMENT

YURONG LUO Peking opera is a distinctive form of artistic performance and also the most dominant form of Chinese opera. The Peking opera has existed for more than 200 years. Today, with the progress of time, this precious art form appears to be going into recession because it is too traditional for modern times. This collection deconstructs traditional culture with a more youthful vision. allowing people to reacquaint themselves with the beauty of traditional art. The entire silhouette is combined with irregular exaggerated three-dimensional structures and the oversized jacket. In addition, I created a series of prints inspired by the Peking opera masks, shredding and laying the opera mask pieces and tracing the irregular pattern on the edge of the shard, then creating different print patterns. It brings a more unique visual experience to the whole collection.

Watching the increasing cases of discrimination, crime, growing numbers of COVID-19 cases, shocked by news that I never imagined before, I sometimes question myself and this world. “What happened to this world? Should I still design those garments that depict the dreamy life that no one is actually living?” My major is special occasion;, I meant to design garments for that one percent of people who live the dream, but I decided to do designs that could help cure society, rather than dispel the fantasy. My collection, “Mutualism,” depicts a vision that all races live together equally on Earth, making the whole of society better, which reflects its ecological meaning. This concept is transferred into patterns as well. I took complete garments apart into pieces and reconstructed them to form a better and fresh new look.

PLAY AWAY Digital rendering

STATEMENT

CARLY MCBRIDE During quarantine, I found myself re-watching “The Sound of Music.” I was instantly inspired by the clothing Maria had made for the children out of pure necessity. I often aim my designs toward functinality and comfortability. This made me think; I too wanted to redesign the typical uniform and make it my own, just with more creative expression. I laid out all my inspo pages and began using my iPad to sketch and render each figure. All of the fabric swatches came from donated print samples found at FIT, and this allowed me to play with various colors and prints, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The collection is full of organic lines and simple silhouettes which create a natural feeling of comfort.

ESCHER Procreate

STATEMENT

YVES MERVIN-LEROY At a very young age I became captivated by the work of artist M.C. Escher. His optical illusions made clever use of linear perspective to create impossible structures that can be confusing for the eye to decipher. For this collection, I drew inspiration from these perspective illusions and his tessellations. I wanted to bring some luxury fashion design elements from the runway to the streets through these designs. At times in haute couture, garments can become so fantastical that they lose most of their functionality. So, to achieve this without sacrificing wearability, I blended ideas from both streetwear and high fashion. I developed several fabric treatments and patterns that could be applied, without sacrificing any ofthe technical features a garment requires to be both comfortable and practical. Some of these treatments include lasercut organza lattices, embossed leather, and 3D-printed tessellating tiles linked together with jump rings.

TRANSPICUOUSITY Procreate iPad

STATEMENT

ASHNA MOOGI “Transpicuousity” is a collection that reinvents the world of evening wear using mix-and-match separates with detachable layers. Worn together, they create avant-garde evening wear. Paired separately or “layered down,” they can be worn for a casual outing. The inspiration for this design was derived from images of x-rays of clothes, plants, and objects. I wanted to create a line of designs that can go from day to evening. I wanted to make these designs reusable, in today’s social media frenzy and digitized world. The detachable layers are what will make the avant-garde design transform into a more casual option that can be worn more often. These transformable looks allow you to style differently using the same pieces. This would allow customers to wear the outfit in different ways without feeling like they are repeating their outfits. This will reduce the waste from garments, and thus make the collection more sustainable.

KEEP THE LIGHT BURNING Procreate

STATEMENT

ZHANÉ NORMAN I have always thought of fashion as being one of the greatest forms of communication. In the simplest of ways one can share their class, religion, political views, etc., without even uttering a word. And that’s what I decided to do with my thesis collection, “Keep The Light Burning.” I was inspired to pay tribute to my lineage after finding an excerpt about my great-great-great-grandfather in the “History of the American Negro: South Carolina” (c. 1910s). This fully digital collection includes multiple prints of family photos taken throughout the years. My use of lacing/string detail within many of the pieces symbolizes generational connection. I believe to know where you’re going you must know where you’ve come from. Know past, Know self.

KERRIGAN ONNO The title of this collection is “Rethink.” It is inspired by Maria Bartuszova, a post-war plaster artist who was often inspired by the haptic and fleeting shapes found in nature. This collection is about reducing my interpretation of Maria Bartuszova’s work to find a certain purity. I started with women’s wardrobe, and not fashion. It was important for me to rethink basics and make them relevant for today. Familiar shapes in unfamiliar fabrics, and unfamiliar shapes in new fabrics with new detailing — that is my collection

Before starting my seventh semester, many things were not stable in my life. I was experiencing different emotions at the same time. While preparing this collection, “Mood Diary,” I turned my mood changes into designs, like keeping a diary. Inspired by these feelings and expressing the integrity of contrasts, this collection has an intense look achieved by combining opposite elements of punk and hippie culture. I used various fabrics and materials such as embroidered cotton, silk taffeta, wool plaid, rib knit, denim, lace, leather, felted wool, and metal studs and chains. For coloring, I used markers and watercolor mixes and lined over the looks and garments with a waterproof pen. To give the studs and chains a metal effect I used a metallic pen. Finally, I used colored pencils for some shading and facial details.

STATEMENT

JACLYNN POLZER “Chromatiphoria” was inspired by the chromatophores in cephalopods, like cuttlefish and squid, that allow their skin to change color and camouflage. Reflected in the prints and color scheme, this collection is about blending in by standing out, a different kind of camouflage, one that begs to be seen. I was also influenced by lingerie and sultry 1920s silhouettes. This was my first project rendered completely digitally. By utilizing Adobe Photoshop and my Wacom pad, I used various Photoshop brushes and techniques to achieve realistic shading and fabric on my figures, and inserted my own prints. I’m often inspired by different animals, as such a giant variety of life exists on our planet. Nature offers endless inspiration, ideas, and solutions to our world; it’s our job to search, find, and apply them.

ALLISON RICH

The collection “Words for Falling Apart” grew from my isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. In March 2020, I moved back to my hometown and returned to my roots. I felt the walls of my studio pressing in and saw my entire life laid out around me in decaying objects and memories. In this isolation I searched for the grounding element. Through a mixture of anxiety and the symbolic, I discovered spinning. I wanted to make a collection that could be done from home. With the uncertainties of supply chains, I relied on what I had and what I could find in my local fibershed. The knits would be loose and raw, yarn spun by my own hands. Cocooning shapes and stitches running and reforming, a stratified movement — that was how I felt. I wanted my illustrations to read as flat, desaturated, and a bit blurry. I used pastels to achieve this look.

WARPED X REPAIRED Procreate

STATEMENT

MARY SAGSVEEN After living many months alone in my apartment due to COVID-19, I was happy to return to work in June. I found myself riding the Q -train, doing all of the things I used to do before the pandemic, but none of it felt the same. It felt dreamlike, or like I was living it through someone else’’s eyes. I turned to my dad’s and brother’s oversized clothing during these months because I wanted to continue to feel hidden, even though we were all stepping out of our apartments a little more. The feelings I felt throughout this period inspired me to create “WARPED x REPAIRED,” a two-part collection energized by surrealism, misshaped reality, and the ongoing idea of trying to piece life back together.

DAVID JAMES STEPHENS My “Linda of Ark” collection was dedicated to my aunt. I wanted to reimagine her as a science-fiction heroine in my own created universe. I used androgynous shapes and Joan of Arc silhouettes juxtaposed with shiny, high-gloss, metallic fabrics. Blending both medieval and futuristic periods and using layers was key for a true sportswear sensibility. I used artist markers and colored pencils for my fashion illustrations. I am highly inspired by film and science fiction in everything I do.

“Trip” is a collection of vivid hue celebrations. I was inspired by the contemporary artist Bruce Riley, who is well-regarded for his psychedelic resin paintings. As an avid lover of interesting color concoctions and, of course, art, I knew that Riley would be the perfect source of inspiration. His works feature kaleidoscopic, circular shapes bursting with heavily saturated pigments of greens, blues, reds, pinks, and so much more. The shapes found in his work provided me with my textile print seen in my collection. The colors, round silhouettes, and cut-outs were directly sourced from his works. Other styles and shapes were designed to reflect my love for ’90s fashion.

As COVID-19 has erupted across the world, we have had to accept a new “normal.” For many, this has led to monotony, anxiety, and being uninspired While designing this collection, I was able to transport myself to a dreamscape and escape the current world. The dreamscape I imagined was based on artist Paul Milinski’s 3D renderings, which you will see on my mood boards. These images portray a world where we did things differently — a society where humans, plants, and animals coexist and thrive. A future where resources are not exhausted. Where modern and sustainable architecture intertwines with flourishing wildlife. The third sub-collection of my thesis, “Avant Garden,” is entitled “Fauna.” Inspired by the multitude of animals of this dreamscape, this sleep-wear collection is dramatic, bold, and comfortable. Classic pajama sets are given updated silhouettes and hand-embroidered wildlife motifs.

As a child, one of the most exciting times of my week was going to the Brooklyn Museum. One year, the artist Takashi Murakami had an exhibit, and his art changed everything for me. His use of colorful and fun imagery with the dichotomy of deep symbolism allowed me to view and create art from a more thoughtful lens. This project is an homage to Takashi Murakami and the beautiful world he created. I wanted to create my own, and “Our Little World” was born from this inspiration. For this collection I created my own characters and one-of-a-kind prints based on various Murakami pieces. I incorporated bright vivid colors as well as experimental silhouettes to immerse the wearer of the collection into a different world. Each piece is multi-functional in order to have the ability of ultimate play and discovery.
