MESSAGE PRESiDENT FROM THE

Here we have the work of over 500 graduating Art and Design students—every one of them a marvel! Imagine the challenges they faced this year. Forced by the pandemic to work from their homes, denied the in-studio, shoulder-to-shoulder, hands-on learning experience they expected, they nevertheless forged ahead, defying all obstacles. They created makeshift work stations in their bedrooms, basements, kitchen corners and other unlikely locations. Focused, hardworking and energetic, they applied their ingenuity to learn, explore, experiment and achieve. And as we see from this catalogue, they succeeded. The work in this catalogue represents 16 of the School of Art and Design’s programs. In it we not only see the students’ finished products, but also images of how those projects evolved. These images help to reveal the creative process and the students’ individuality. Through it all, we sense their resilience and determination. Indeed, this vibrant catalogue— with its bright bold colors—pays homage to their optimism and extraordinary strength. I offer congratulations to these students and to the families and friends who supported them throughout this difficult year. Congratulations as well to the stalwart Art and Design faculty whose own skills and ingenuity rose to the pandemic’s challenge and provided guidance to their students with diligence and care. The collections of the Footwear and Accessories Design BFA graduating class of 2021 feature products and designs that spring from the concept of ‘Augmented Reality.’ Each student had the opportunity to specialize in footwear, handbags, or art. The students fully explored their inspirations by researching target markets and seasons before producing their collections. Their designs feature a wide variety of materials, including leather, plastic, wood, textiles, and metals. Their works were conceived and fabricated entirely by the students and were selected for the exhibition in collaboration with faculty members and industry critics.

The inspiration for my collection is my passion for the 18th century. This time period symbolizes glamour combined with artistic characteristics, details, colors, and themes. I researched paintings, books, and museums to understand the timeless details which influenced my vision and my designs. I sourced many materials from local businesses and applied mixedwood and molded-leather techniques in my shoe designs. The bag combines calf fur and snakeskin with vegetable-tanned cowhide to create more detail. I used my skills in Rhino3D to create the belt buckle, then I sent the final design to be cast in brass metal.

I have always been influenced by nature. My designs are a reflection of how nature makes me feel. Flowing organic design lines are a constant theme in my work. They evoke a sense of familiarity that may be subconsciously comforting to the viewer. “Etherea” reflects a desire to take solace in beauty when the world seems so ugly. My thesis is the embodiment of the couture collection I have always wanted to produce. It consists of three handbags and two pairs of gloves. It is imbued with my love for hand embellishment and incorporates techniques gained from my millinery expertise and accumulated industry experience. The materials I chose helped me convey a sense of dreamy elegance. “Etherea” is refined, exacting, and soothing.

“Harlem is a stage. It’s like its own planet, from the way we dress, to the swag in the way we walk and talk,” said Teyana Taylor. Many people think that Harlem is Manhattan, but most people from Harlem believe that Harlem is its own borough. Harlem has a different culture, environment, and energy from the rest of Manhattan. My unisex collection is athletic-inspired, where you will get to know Harlem from my style point of view. Along with athletic footwear, I have added other accessories that play a big role in Harlem’s fashion. Harlem has its own style, but what gets people’s attention is our athletic footwear and how some of us go to the extreme to get some sneakers. Harlem is my community and by looking at this collection, you will feel the energy that Harlem has to offer.

“Narsha” is an old Korean word that means “flying.” This collection, “Narsha,” was inspired by traditional Korean clothing, known as “Hanbok.” The beautiful flow and divine look of Hanbok caught my eye and reminded me of butterflies flying in the air. The idea was to capture the exquisite shapes and moods of Hanbok and project that into each piece. Organza, a thin, sheer fabric, was used to make the body of bags and upper of shoes without any structural methods. It emphasizes the delicacy and elegance of Hanbok. The beads and strings were used to resemble the details of Hanbok. It also created wrinkles and volumes like Hanbok. The model in the photo wore a bolero designed after the top of women’s Hanbok, Jeogori. The photo was taken at the Korean palace, Gyeongbokgung, to clearly identify the collection.

My “New York Girl” collection is full of fun and spontaneous accessories, which include a variation of leathers, paints, pine, and cork wood. I created the original artwork, hand-crafted the platform heels and hand-painted all the accessories. The strong pop of colors that I’ve used have been my favorite choice of colors for many years. Their eye-catching brightness is a representation of the women who have inspired me with their strength, confidence, beauty, independence, and creativity. My designs celebrate the everyday hardworking woman, who is a go-getter, book- and street-smart, always puts her best foot forward, doesn’t second-guess herself, surrounds herself with positive people, (i.e. family and close friends), enjoys her down time at home or at a bar/lounge, and enjoys being the center of attention. My “New York Girl” is a staple in society, who embraces her perfections as well as her imperfections.

“Subaqueous Creatures” is an unconventional approach to Footwear and Accessories Design. I challenged myself to think outside of the box, introducing the world to my take on the mysterious beauty of underwater creatures. My inspiration came during quarantine while watching “Animal Planet.” The episode was about bioluminescent creatures and ideas stormed into my head — the way they attract attention in the dark depths of the ocean, utilizing their illuminating features to guide them. In this collection, I focused on embodying the physical aspects of four subaqueous creatures: colossal squids, angler fish, jellyfish, and starfish. I highlighted their bioluminescent properties while maintaining their mysterious aesthetic in my designs. Experimenting with materials such as algae foam, green cell foam, stretch knit, elastic, reflective 3M, and synthetic leather, I created a unique look for the collection. My mission is to evoke thought and creativity for anyone who wears my products, ultimately inspiring individuality.

For my senior thesis collection, I designed special evening wear accessories. Our graduating class theme is augmented reality, which can be interpreted in many different ways. For me, fashion is my fantasy and fantasy is my reality. When I put an outfit together for myself, or when designing for the world, I am always telling a tale. I am endlessly inspired by historical fashion and costume. Each ensemble or accessory I create is a reflection of the realm of consciousness I am living in at the time. For this collection, I dove deep into one of my favorite worlds and stories. I chose to highlight Queen Guinevere from the Arthurian legends and create unique accessories inspired by her. These pieces reflect her beauty, strength, and power in Camelot.

“VESSELS” is a collection of handcrafted objects that explore the relationship between positive and negative space. In these objects, the positive spaces are the essential components, such as straps meant to secure the foot or belongings, while the negative spaces are the voids that draw the eye’s attention. In this way, the focus is redirected to aspects that are often overlooked.

From a very young age, I had a passion for drawing. I started with simple pencil and paper. As I got older, my skills evolved along with the technology and mediums which I would use to create. I moved from basic pencil and paper to digital art, utilizing Photoshop. The medium, software, and hardware I now use for my pieces are Procreate for iPad, as well as InDesign and Illustrator. For my thesis, “Adcessories,” I wanted to combine my love of advertising design with my passion for accessories. This is a full menswear and accessories collection united by colors, materials, and backgrounds. My creative objective here is drawing “aesthetically pleasing” advertisements. For my thesis I combined my knowledge of each field and brought it all together to create three collections of pure harmonious bliss that best showcase my vision of advertising and accessory design.

“Odyssey” is a three-piece collection designed to celebrate notions of autonomy, freedom, and fortitude which the prospect of an open road grants to motorcyclists. Each accessory is constructed to meet the rider’s acute needs and targets pain points of aerodynamics, safety, and versatility. The sleek fabric, a laminated cotton canvas that is both waterproof and abrasion-resistant, combined with robust molded hardware and reflective accents, makes for a modern collection which suits any adventure seeker, from the city commuter to the globe trekker.

LUKE LASPINA As fashion trends have evolved, and companies have eased up on conventional dress policies of the 20th century, men have progressed toward a much more relaxed, yet still professional look in the office. What has yet to make the necessary leap to the next level of office fashion is footwear. While companies like Cole Haan have made great strides in the right direction for men’s dress wear, I aimed to take it to the next level with a heavily athletic-influenced line of men’s office footwear. I selected five different companies as examples of what an Offletic shoe might look like in their respective offices, based on the companies’ aesthetics. My goal was to create footwear that can be worn both in the office and on the street, providing a high level of comfort and functionality for everyday use, while still retaining a level of corporate respectability.

As a designer, I want to revitalize the concept of wearable art, reinvent luxury, and redefine the boundaries of “everyday” through a judicious consideration of the interplay between fashion and function. To achieve this, I channel my love for striking beauty, versatility, and craftsmanship into my work, and I hope to compel people to not only envision themselves taking my products out on the town, but also to take the time to admire them as sculptures.

“Tentorium,” the Latin word for “suspended,” is a collection where design, architecture, and engineering merge. For my thesis, I decided to analyze wire cable suspended structures. I wanted to understand how they hold together, and to analyze how they could be applied to accessories. I studied the art of structural engineering and focused on the clean complexity of Santiago Calatrava’s bridges. My designs play with pulling forces to create a sense of tension. The pieces are suspended by functional cables that support their weight and stretch as the weight increases. In order to recreate the structural framework, I worked with vegetable-tanned leather, maple and pine wood, steel wire rope, and hardware used in construction. For the body of the pieces, I used calfskin. The color palette is neutral so as to emphasize the contrast of the wood, leather, and metal. “Tentorium” embraces the intersection of architecture and engineering.

Inspired by plant cells and driven by comfort, “Molecular” is a collection of footwear and handbags that focuses on comfort and function for everyday activities. The silhouettes are inspired by the microscopic beauty of cacti and succulent cells, incorporating biomimicry not only through the shapes of these cells but also their functions. Cacti and succulents have cells called mucilage which help retain moisture. Because of this wonder of nature, there is a waterproof aspect in each design, but, like plants, they use water to transform. Each pattern piece is coated with hydrochromic ink, which dries white and reveals the true color of the material underneath when wet. This transformation from white to the original color creates the technique of “hydrochromism.”

Welcome to the “Concrete Jungle,” my fall-winter collection of handbags inspired by my home, New York City. I’ve designed this collection of handbags for the women who want to take up space — the bosses, the leaders, the go-getters, and most importantly, the women who refuse to compromise style for function. As a native New Yorker, I know that this city never sleeps, and as a woman, I know that our work is never done! All three handbags feature hands-free options, making it the perfect bag for running errands or catching lunch with the girls. These aren’t your ordinary work/travel bags. This collection of handbags was fabricated using some of the finest materials such as black cowhide, fox fur, and hair on cheetah-printed lambskin. With these luxe materials and fine finishing techniques, these bags are sure to make you feel like you’re living in luxury.

“Designed Objects” is an artistic interpretation of standard-issue gear. This collection fits entirely into a military-issue sack-style duffel bag. Inspired by the streamlined architecture of the Space Age and the nomadic behavior of cowboys, I developed a uniform rotation of goods that reflects my take on a utopian lifestyle. With each product, I emphasize form, first using a design language I have created to ensure a cohesive experience without relying on color or material. This collection is my prediction of where design values might take us in the future.

I was born in the Caribbean island nation of Dominica, but spent most of my time in New York City. As a child, I observed the Dominica people’s creole spirit through their artwork and handmade crafts. Frequent visits to museums strongly influenced my colorful and dramatic style. These memories planted the seed that nurtured my creative abilities. I have challenged myself to increase my understanding of various art techniques and accessory design practices. There is a hunger within me to create visually stimulating, unique, bold, and vibrant designs. All of the collection’s pieces are made from recycled materials influenced by African and tribal designs. The theme is tied together with twisted gold thread, colorful curved shapes, and many appliques. Each of the nine shoe designs is crafted with the rich comfort of layered leathers and suede uppers. Through this collection, I celebrate the Dominica artisans’ strength, pride, and grace.
