MESSAGE PRESiDENT FROM THE
Here we have the work of over 500 graduating Art and Design students—every one of them a marvel! Imagine the challenges they faced this year. Forced by the pandemic to work from their homes, denied the in-studio, shoulder-to-shoulder, hands-on learning experience they expected, they nevertheless forged ahead, defying all obstacles. They created makeshift work stations in their bedrooms, basements, kitchen corners and other unlikely locations. Focused, hardworking and energetic, they applied their ingenuity to learn, explore, experiment and achieve. And as we see from this catalogue, they succeeded. The work in this catalogue represents 16 of the School of Art and Design’s programs. In it we not only see the students’ finished products, but also images of how those projects evolved. These images help to reveal the creative process and the students’ individuality. Through it all, we sense their resilience and determination. Indeed, this vibrant catalogue— with its bright bold colors—pays homage to their optimism and extraordinary strength. I offer congratulations to these students and to the families and friends who supported them throughout this difficult year. Congratulations as well to the stalwart Art and Design faculty whose own skills and ingenuity rose to the pandemic’s challenge and provided guidance to their students with diligence and care. Illustration students at FIT learn the application of art, technology, and entrepreneurship. The program prepares students for careers in the competitive graphic arts business. Students integrate traditional and digital art media and techniques, as well as engage in creative problem-solving processes to produce imagery for commercial applications that effectively communicate information and target specific markets. During their time at FIT, students develop their personal style, technique, and expression, creating a strong body of work that culminates in the end-of-year exhibition. The high quality of work reflects their talent, persistence, and experience, which represents the initial step for each artist in his or her career endeavor.

As a child, I was obsessed with cartoons and video games. I wanted to live in the lands created by Nintendo, take out villains with the Teen Titans, and discover treasures with the warriors in Dragon Age. As we grow up, the magic starts to fade, and the colors of life grow dull with the responsibilities of adulthood. I look to recreate that magic of fun characters with funny, relatable personalities. As seen in my pieces, I created a scene from a Dungeons & Dragons game I played with my friends that pulled us closer together, creating a sense of normalcy when we weren’t able to be together in person. Another piece is an homage to a character from Animal Crossing, a game that eases the stress of current times, as well as a fun animation with vibrant colors and whimsy that brings me back to the lively cartoons of my childhood.

Growing up in the Bronx, raised by a single mother, I had to work harder to get what I wanted in life. Originally waitlisted at FIT, once I was accepted I decided to dedicate myself to my craft. After years of hard work at school, I booked my first professional illustration job with the Travel Channel while still in school. Since then, my skills and confidence have grown and my work has become more personal. “Meet You Over the Rainbow Bridge” helped me process losing both my pets within a year and a half. “Buying Time” shows my struggles keeping up with my skin condition while working in a field that requires constant use of my hands. “Lucid City Walk” is a book cover that shows a dream of me walking through NYC. Going through the pages, the reader will journey through parts of the city that are significant to me.

“And what is the use of a book,” thought Alice, “Without pictures or conversation?” —Lewis Carroll, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” From a very young age, I found I couldn’t agree more with Alice’s sentiments. I’ll never forget the feeling of slipping into a fantastical world outside of time, space, and reality, and losing myself in a story of perfectly blended shapes and shadows. That feeling led me to start drawing and coloring my own worlds, and eventually inspired me to pursue a career in art. To rescue a buzzing mind from boredom, or offer comfort to an aching soul, are the goals that push me from my bed to my easel every single day. I want to feed the young and eager imaginations of tomorrow and make pages of mundane black type burst into an explosion of texture and color.

The type of illustration that captivates me is whimsical art. Even as I get older, I have always been interested in children’s books and comics because they can be deceptively simple or intricate. Whimsical illustrations inspired me to create my pieces about the seasons, a special place, and an amusing companion. Most of my illustrations are created in a traditional way, but recently I’ve begun working digitally on Procreate.

Creativity to me is pushing beyond the boundaries that we are told to stay within and being able to give people glimpses into what my inner world looks like. Growing up, I always had a fascination with storytelling, specifically the fantasy genre. My father brought me up reading “The Hobbit” and routinely marathoning the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Being introduced to fantasy through literature, video games, and tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons helped further my love for stories and storytelling in faraway lands. These have all been heavy influences on the kinds of art I love to make and are a major factor why my thesis is all based on fantasy work. Creating fantastical, visual narratives to connect with others through my art is a passion of mine, and I’m excited to share my stories with anyone I can.

My goals in my storytelling work are to create a shift in emotion for the viewer, and for them to ask questions about where they are and if they are in danger. Growing up surrounded by nature, I was fascinated with how peaceful and beautiful it was during the day — but once the sun set, I would run home to hide from the darkness and the mystery that accompanied the night. I like to view the setting as a character of its own, so if I were to take away any figure, it could stand alone. I mentally put myself in my work, whether I am just the audience or an active participant in the journey my characters may be in. I explore my thoughts on the mysterious and unknown digitally, the same as how the medium itself was and still is — mysterious and unknown to me.

Entering FIT, I quickly discovered my love of painting. As an art history minor, I extensively studied various artworks. The works of Caravaggio and Raphael especially moved me. I often refer to the old masters and their use of lighting, subject matter, and mood. I also enjoy looking at newer pop surrealist artists. My goal is to combine my love of portraiture with a compelling subject matter to express complex emotions. I’m a very expressive person. I believe my work reflects my feelings, period, and cultural settings. My collection tells my experiences, feelings of fear, anxiousness, sadness, and self-exploration. These pieces consist of three oil paintings on a panel, which all began using the grisaille method. In class, I learned to mix mediums and incorporate glazing techniques to build up color. I hope to one day have my work displayed in galleries and inspire other FIT students.

In my work, I wanted to incorporate more geometric design elements while not completely abstracting the image. My focus was to use lines in the illustrations to lead the viewer’s eye around the image, highlighting the main subject. I started with a line drawing, balancing out the shapes, making sure it was evenly balanced and not too busy. Once I had the race car subject in the right position along with the geometric shapes, I was able to go in with color, making sure that the higher contrasting/brighter parts would lead the viewer to the subject. For my other two illustrations, I followed a similar process, making sure the lines around the main subject would lead to it. For the oil painting, I did this with clouds in the sky and the Space Angel illustration. I used the shape of the subject and the background lines to frame them.

As a Bengali-American Muslim person, I like to incorporate my identity into my illustrations. Adding parts of my identity helps with my storytelling, and it creates an opportunity for the viewer to learn or to relate to. With my “Ramadan Mubarak” project, I wanted people to learn more about different cultures that observe Ramadan and how they celebrate it. Ramadan is the most important month of the year for Muslims. There is an abundance of empathy and compassion during this time from all over the world. Many of the food made and traditions held during this time reflect on the importance of Ramadan. I created a collection of illustrations that show how people celebrate Ramadan, from the delicious foods to the extravagant traditions from around the globe. I’ve learned about so many cultures while creating this project, and I hope these happy illustrations will teach others as well.

Growing up, I had a fixation with vivid colors, flowers and nature. My interest in these came from living in a Dominican household, as I’m drawn to the radiance of the Caribbean and its lively folklore. Early on in my work, I experimented with different mediums, like watercolors and acrylics, but during college I wanted to challenge myself to work with oil paints for my portfolio. Mixed media is something that I always utilize, since it helps me portray my illustrations in the best way possible. Color is very important to me as it can set the mood and exude individuality. Color themes that I utilize range from the psychedelic patterns of fashion of the 1960s to the shapes organically found in the blueprint of flowers and insects. Most of my work consists of portraitures, as I feel like the human face is highly expressive and fun to render.

I read somewhere that if we want to preserve our culture, we need to keep creating it. Growing up, I loved learning about different cultures around the world, but looking back, I realize I neglected my own. I never fully immersed myself in it. For my thesis I am celebrating and digging into my Mexican heritage. My love for fantasy stems from learning about myths as a kid, specifically Greek and Norse mythology. Inspired by the old masters who painted the Greek and Norse gods, I seek to bring that grandeur to the Aztec pantheon using a mix of oil and digital painting. I can only hope that these pieces inspire others to do the same, and, using art, start repairing the destruction colonization brought to the Aztecs and many other Mesoamerican cultures and civilizations.

Not only do I take direct inspiration from already existing media, but I also enjoy portraiture. Aykut Aydogdu and Sam Spratt are two of the many artists I look to for personal inspiration, as they successfully incorporate emotion into their portraits. My digital piece, “Fish Out of Water,” shows just that. The human body has always been my preferred subject, and it naturally blended into my love for character design, which greatly shows in my group of digital pieces, the “Sneakerhead” series. My favorite poetess, Mary Oliver, wrote in her autobiographical essay: “I read the way a person might swim, to save his or her life. I wrote that way too.” I would like to add: I create art that way too. My life is made up of three things: creating art, reading, and writing. I’m fervent about blending the three together, and the single object that does just that is a book, more specifically, its covers. To showcase this, I designed and illustrated two dust jackets and one front cover for three of my favorite classic books. I used my passion for mixing mediums, such as embroidery, oil, graphite, and digital, to tell the individual stories through a visual narrative, and to implement my interest in typeface and elements of graphic design. As the saying goes: A picture is worth a thousand words.

One of the most enjoyable things about creating art is storytelling. There is something rewarding about looking at a piece of art and all the details that help unify the narrative. Combining my favorite aspects of world building, my work explores the relationships that people and animals share with their environments. A lot can be shown about a character through the worlds they exist in because the environment is a character of its own. This allows me to explore several possibilities and lets me decide what is most essential in helping communicate my story most clearly. Attending FIT has been crucial to my development as an artist and as a person. I have learned how to present the stories I want to tell through visual mediums and the importance of being part of a creative community. Being able to bring people together through storytelling is pretty cool.

The theme of horror and experiencing horror has been a huge part of my life. Immersing myself in fantastical ideas and taking a break from reality is the way I deal with the stressors of daily life. For this reason, video games and film are a huge influence in my work, providing the escape I reach for. It’s no wonder that I found Allen Williams through one of my favorite films — a movie that also deals with the theme of escaping the horror of reality. Allen Williams was a concept artist for “Pan’s Labyrinth” and is a recurring artist for Guillermo Del Toro’s films. Allen is my all-time favorite artist. Ever since I could remember, I loved to draw. Saturday morning cartoons were a drawing session and a way to see how things were made. I would bring my sketchbook to school and pay more attention to doing illustrations than to the actual class. The family trade is construction, and no one was an artist or ever went to college. Construction was my first job and it showed me that I would rather do anything else besides that. I knew I wanted to draw more than anything because of how much work I put toward going to school. Waking up to catch a train, then to work, then to sleep; I would not have done that for anything else. I have learned that drawing is more than just pencil and paper; it’s dedication and perseverance. My artwork reflects my interests and personality, all of which I developed over the years.

Making art is how I keep hidden thoughts and dreams, constantly swirling in my head, come to life. My art forces me to admit to what I’m thinking. It is more honest about myself than I am. To an extent we all do this: “How are you doing?” — most of us say “good” with a smile. But the reality is not that; we all have deeper things going on beneath the surface. Life is much more complex. Through a crossover of surrealism and impressionism, the piece shows people I know and see beyond the surface, with symbolic elements of insanity that they keep under lock and key. I often combine realist and impressionist elements. Degas believed he was a realist artist, but he was caught in the era of impressionism. I think he is both. Some of my other influences are Edward Hopper, Edward Gorey, Edvard Munch, and Armando Veve.

Growing up, I was always enchanted by reading fairy tales and period romance novels. Thus, I was inspired to make illustrations for some of my favorite stories and characters for my thesis. This led me to creating a movie poster for the 2005 film “Pride and Prejudice,” and a book cover for the romance novel “The Duke and I,” by Julia Quinn, in my own style. My style involves delicate linework and incorporates floral motifs that either frame the composition or act as symbols to the stories that are being told in my illustrations. My passion for fairy tales has also led me to pursue fantasy illustration, which is demonstrated by my portrait painting “Cameron with Butterflies.” In this oil painting, the butterflies mask the subject of the portrait in a dreamy and surreal manner. I seek to capture ethereal beauty in my work by employing traditional and digital techniques.

I am heavily drawn to illustration because it encourages me to pause and quiet my mind to feel what the art piece intends. This transports me on a psychological journey, either to a new fantastical world, or to a deeper emotional connection within myself. With an academic background in psychology (and a non-academic interest in science fiction and horror) I strive to set a mood in my works: either dark and unsettling, or quiet and reflective. I choose to express this through characters that are nonhuman, but that nonetheless embody social and psychological themes. For my thesis, I created a set of narrative digital illustrations that follow a lonely robot as he dreams of and embarks on a journey of his own. The series presents themes of finding comfort with oneself and embracing the mysteries of life, both positive and negative.

For as long as I can remember, I was drawn to fantasy, adventure, and sci-fi. I grew up reading and listening to many fantasy-based books, like the classic Grimms’ fairy tales. I realized that I enjoy telling a story through illustrations. Nowadays, my main inspiration for storytelling comes from Studio Ghibli. And my inspiration for drawing comes from Jean Giraud’s (Moebius’) detailed linework and use of color, and Kim Jung Gi’s and Arthur Adams’ detailed and textured linework. For one of my artworks, called “Dragon in Fort Tryon Park,” I wanted to create a whimsical scene in the park. I used a mechanical pencil, Micron pens, and Microperm pens to create the piece. For a finished illustration, I use watercolor paint, brush markers, Prismacolor pencils, watercolor, and bristol paper, and put the finishing touches in Photoshop.

I’ve always taken a profound interest in pop culture, horror, and the unconventional aspects of life. I love to incorporate these concepts into my work and enjoy giving them a new style and/or meaning. I find that I am specifically driven by the idea of caricatures that still maintain a sense of realism. Exaggerated facial expressions are definitely my favorite to work on. I draw a lot of influence from artists such as Mark Ryden and Tim Burton, constantly aiming to make artwork strange and captivating. I have mainly worked digitally and with acrylic paint, but I am currently expanding on my use of media.

From a very young age, I’ve always had a fascination with the entertainment industry. Most of my childhood was spent consuming all sorts of entertainment media, whether it was television, traditional print, film, etc. Since this fascination shaped me into the person I am today, I love to include pop culture throughout my own artwork. My goal while creating these images is to convey what the pop culture figure is expressing, while transforming it with my own conceptual thoughts and stylistic approach. Throughout my studies, I mainly focused on expanding my digital art skills. After graduation, I hope to incorporate my traditional media skills into my digital artistry to complete mixed-media, pop-culture-influenced pieces.

Growing up, I was always in my own world or exploring others — from acting out my favorite fantasy characters, to jumping into the worlds of “The Last Dragon Chronicles,” to marathoning “Star Wars” and “Lord of the Rings” with my dad. Either playing outside or reading and playing video games — there was no in-between. This has carried through to my adulthood and into my art. In the selection of illustrations I have chosen to showcase, I wanted to incorporate these inspirations and push myself to create the environments, world, and characters I envision in my head. I start out thumbnailing in my sketchbook, helping to keep my drawings loose. I finished my work digitally in Procreate, but tried to keep my work looking as organic as possible. Fantasy and the outdoors are a big part of my life, and I hope to explore that even further in my future work.

Throughout my artistic journey I have always been compelled to use animals as a primary subject in my pieces. When I began drawing as a child, I felt as though animals were so much more interesting, each with their own unique look, with an array of fur, scales, and feathers. Many artists have inspired me in my pursuit of becoming an animal illustrator, such as Akreon, Aaron Blaise, and Sal Catalano, who gave me the push I needed to pursue my dream. When I began work on my thesis, I set out to create illustrations to convey strong emotions while using animals. For my tarot series, I intend to capture the essence of each card’s meaning while presenting the beauty of each unique animal associated with those meanings. My triptych piece takes those animals and associates them with positions of power and the struggle between them.

When I created my own movie poster variation for “Jurassic Park” as a class assignment, I had the realization that I wanted to become an artist who focuses on drawing a vast array of dinosaurs. While working on that assignment, I started using the method of combining both traditional and digital mediums in one piece. I discovered that it has been the most effective method for me, and it also conveys texture in a much better way. I have been fascinated by dinosaurs since I was little and I never grew out of that phase; if anything, I’ve become even more in touch with that fascination. Dinosaurs easily became the main focus for my senior thesis. I would like to eventually illustrate for publications such as books or magazines where dinosaurs are a popular subject, especially for children.

My thesis projects are inspired by what happened in 2020. Last year was unforgettable, but even in that tough situation, people never surrendered hope, kept seeking happiness, and tried to change the world. So in my artwork, I want to send the message that people are strong, no matter what tough situations they are faced with. Inspired by this theme, I created a CD jacket for my favorite K-pop idol’s new song. I added the broken mirror to symbolize him breaking out of what is expected of him, and tried to show his strength through his facial expression. For “Dawn of New Era,” I illustrated a lion, which is a symbol of change, fighting against darkness. Within my three pieces, I created fantasy elements as stress relief, so we can escape from reality.

They say you cannot judge books by their covers, but how about recreating them? Classic novels evoke themes that have proven to transcend time, lessons we as humans continue to learn even after their publication. My work takes the essence of a classic novel, and, through the use of lighting and symbolism, heightens the emotional impact these stories convey. Taking the ardent dedication I have to reading, in combination with my artistic skills, I have digitally illustrated three book covers that give new meaning to their titles. These classics come with a reputation of their own, but I’d like my work to inspire a new generation of readers to discover them.

When it comes to my own artistic recipe, I consistently find inspiration in daily observations of the world around me — ingredients such as landscapes, life scenes, animals, and food. Then I add the scent of my imagination and inner feelings. I believe my art could be recognized as the relaxing breeze in the storms of life. I was always influenced by the tattoo industry from a very young age. I dreamt of very intricate designs to apply to my body and bring out a meaning from within my heart. As I expanded my vision of the arts, I began to create “flash” tattoo illustrations. Shaped by many cultures, I delve into an ideal that could bring my voice onto paper and body. I wanted to explore how illustrative designs could be replicated on the human body and how I could create something unique for people. For my thesis, “Birth of Egypt,” my artworks combine graphite elements and digital media. By using realism and geometric patterns, I wanted both worlds to collide and appear uniform for individuals who love tattoos.

Animations of Japanese magical girls, the Harry Potter series, and the Percy Jackson series are all works that inspire my creations of fantasy worlds on paper. I had this recurring thought about what makes these fantasy worlds so compelling that, in a way, I would want to live in one. My fantasy conceptual design illustration, “Battle Scene at Bekam,” is first rendered with pencil, then black ballpoint pen on paper. Next, I transferred the work over to a digital medium, Adobe Photoshop, for color and touch-ups. I narrowed down the work from potential characters in a game or movie, then positioned characters against each other in a landscape. I strive to create a tension between the two sides to create a coherent story.

I draw inspiration from my dreams, emotions, and the media that surrounds my world. I combine the essence of these parts of my identity to create art that is colorful and whimsical. I have been entranced by fairytales since I was young, thus, elements of fantasy, flora, and fauna are commonly seen throughout my body of work. They are related to the theme of fantasy fairytales. Most of the work I do is digital, and I am primarily focused on critically endangered species that are currently on track to go extinct. It is our duty to save and preserve this life, and I create this art because time is running out. My favorite childhood animals are disappearing. Ever since I was a child, the human face and facial expressions have fascinated me. The crinkle of someone’s smile, the waves in their hair, the slight squint of their eyes when they laugh. It only made sense that I would show my appreciation for the human face in my senior thesis project. Beginning with calculated ink drawings, I rendered my subject in black and white, and then added color using Adobe Photoshop. Building up realistic skin tones and adding liveliness to the eyes is the best part! Inspired by the works of Kehinde Wiley and Kadir Nelson, I created my senior thesis, “Melanie.” Illustrating people of color and people of backgrounds other than my own has always been thrilling. I find that in the portrayal of our differences, we can discover our similarities.

Art is how I have fun. Since I was little, I enjoyed telling stories using pictures, inspired by all the cartoons, movies, and anime I saw. I would make picture books on copy paper, staple them together, and share them with my classmates during lunch. Now I do the same — I have fun telling stories with my illustrations. I enjoy drawing characters who are expressing their feelings as well as my own. I also use illustration to experiment with colors — how they affect one another and the people that look at them. I gather a lot of inspiration from daily life, animals, and other talented artists.

Spending my life between two unique and contrasting places, Finland and New York, has given me special motivation and inspiration for my work. Particularly influenced by the extraordinary Finnish fauna and flora, as well as the fashion and industrial nuances of New York, I was inspired to portray these sometimes surrealistic aspects of each place. My thesis reflects the deep appreciation I possess for Finnish nature, as well as reflecting on the loss of family members while I lived so far away. I attempt to portray this yearning and loss in a more positive manner, using a brighter color palette and an idealized stylistic approach, in order to reflect on the better aspects of life. I love painting in acrylics and oils, although I also work with many other mediums, including digital platforms, printmaking, and forms of accessories and clothing designs.

I’ve always considered my artwork to be an extension of myself. My art is heavily rooted in my love for science fiction and horror stories, film, botany and anatomy, and traditions from pre-colonial Philippines. I often use the visceral dreams and nightmares I experience almost every night as a starting point for many of my pieces, and attempt to transpose the moods and emotions contained by them into my visual language. By fusing my interests with my dreams and nightmares, I am able to create a world that allows familiarity and the obscure to coalesce, with sections of both stagnation and circular movement that interlace to form a sense of calm among the disarray.

Growing up as an immigrant is growing up undefined by any one thing. As an artist, this lack of definition often appears in the fickle nature of my work. I find myself switching between traditional gouache and digital media, using both in one piece to best convey my thoughts, and shifting the way I go about my art depending on the media I use. My subjects reflect my struggle with identity through juxtaposition and duality. Human forms, existing in contrast to their environment, portray this struggle between two worlds. By working this way, my art has become as tenebrous as my self-identity and remains ever evolving.

All of my pieces are created in a style I’ve been experimenting with, where I use color blocking with flat colors to create an image. One of the artists that inspired me to use this style is Shepard Fairey. I mainly like to work in acrylic, but lately I have worked digitally, and although I find it easier, I think my acrylic paintings come out better. I love to paint portraits and make my own references of my friends and family. While taking these references, I use dramatic lighting to give me more color-blocking shapes to work with.

I have always been fascinated by the ocean and all the sea creatures that inhabit it. “Memories of the Ocean” is part of my senior thesis, where I explore the relationship between us and the ocean, and how actions in our daily lives affect it. It is my hope that the contents of my thesis will only become a distant memory, and that in the near future, all sea creatures and plant life will be thriving alongside humans once again.

As a young girl, I fell in love with the brightly colored narratives within children’s books and cartoons that brought out the magic in everyday life. During the times I felt alone or anxious, these stories gave me the ability to transport my mind to a comforting and warm place. Inspired by my nostalgia for this feeling, I illustrated a classical poem describing the night skyscape. In a whimsical interpretation, the sun and moon are personified as friends to the reader to help navigate the transition from night to day. To achieve a more surreal look, expressive, traditionally painted elements are collaged with sharp, digitally painted pieces. Though my work is made with children in mind, I hope it can transport audiences of any age to their own comforting and magical escape.

In my time at FIT I have tried to be like a sponge, absorbing styles and techniques from my professors and fellow students. I find myself most attracted to drawing portraits and figures of people and characters. Doing this kind of work reminds me of my childhood, of drawing the characters from my favorite shows and movies. I try to infuse that love and passion into all my work. When I do that, the work comes out effortlessly, because I’m doing what I love. To keep myself wellrounded, I like to study various mediums such as oil, pencil, and digital. Whatever medium I happen to be working in, I make time every day to practice and push myself. There will always be areas to improve, and I will always strive to be the best me.

The most important thing for me to do in both life and art is to have fun. Be it through bright colors or silly stories, I try to let a sense of lightheartedness be present in everything. Always having a whimsical and sweet place to escape to, via the art I create, is something that motivates me to keep making. Having my work give a laugh or be someone’s solace, my own or otherwise, makes creating worth it.

Connecting to my heritage is very important to me. I believe that amplifying the voices of those who have never gotten much of a say historically will lead to a deeper appreciation and understanding of my culture. I have always been fascinated by Asian literature and fashion, so I decided to explore them and combine the two in my artwork. By illustrating book covers and designing book spreads of beloved Chinese American novels, I want to bring these stories to life in a captivating way. I incorporate elements of Chinese fashion into these pieces to add glamour to the characters in the stories and to enrich diversity and beauty.
