MESSAGE PRESiDENT FROM THE
Here we have the work of over 500 graduating Art and Design students—every one of them a marvel! Imagine the challenges they faced this year. Forced by the pandemic to work from their homes, denied the in-studio, shoulder-to-shoulder, hands-on learning experience they expected, they nevertheless forged ahead, defying all obstacles. They created makeshift work stations in their bedrooms, basements, kitchen corners and other unlikely locations. Focused, hardworking and energetic, they applied their ingenuity to learn, explore, experiment and achieve. And as we see from this catalogue, they succeeded. The work in this catalogue represents 16 of the School of Art and Design’s programs. In it we not only see the students’ finished products, but also images of how those projects evolved. These images help to reveal the creative process and the students’ individuality. Through it all, we sense their resilience and determination. Indeed, this vibrant catalogue— with its bright bold colors—pays homage to their optimism and extraordinary strength. I offer congratulations to these students and to the families and friends who supported them throughout this difficult year. Congratulations as well to the stalwart Art and Design faculty whose own skills and ingenuity rose to the pandemic’s challenge and provided guidance to their students with diligence and care. For my thesis project, “Caring for Caregivers,” I designed a 14-story retreat center for medical caregivers of terminally ill patients. The goal of this center is to focus on these caregivers’ self-care and their own mental, emotional, and physical health. To design this center, I built a model in SketchUp which was then rendered in Enscape, with finishing touches being added in Photoshop. The center was designed to help the caregivers relax and take time for themselves. Two areas that do just that are the pool, which is located on the basement level, and the meditation center, which is found on the 14th floor. The pool is meant to be a cool, refreshing area for guests to relax. The meditation center is to be used for guests’ self-exploration and to stimulate their mind, body, and soul.

I have been playing tennis my whole life. Throughout the years, I never suffered a substantial injury until the summer of 2019, when I tore my meniscus, putting me in a leg brace for two months and in physical therapy for six months. Looking back on my rehabilitation journey, the perspective I gained and my mental recovery was something I was not expecting to experience. It led me to design “EVAR Retreat,” a healthcare and hospitality retreat for injured athletes. The mental repercussions of an injury often get overshadowed by the physical repercussions. The mission of “EVAR Retreat” is to design an immersive healing experience that bridges the gap between mental and physical wellness. The goal is to have this retreat be both an escape and a focal point, creating an environment that takes you through every stage of the healing process to encourage a stronger and more resilient recovery.

In 2020 we experienced a global pandemic that changed our lives forever. COVID-19 changed the way we worked and gathered and made us more cautious of our surroundings. “Arcadia Suite” was designed for pharmaceutical representatives and healthcare providers to meet in a safe place. Arcadia is used to describe a place of simplicity and quiet pleasure. This suite’s intent is to provide a calming environment, free of stress and disturbances, where users can recharge and find tranquility in the midst of chaos. The design includes warm lighting to enhance a soothing feel, antimicrobial materials to prevent the spread of germs, and healthcare textiles to make routine cleaning easier. My goal is to create interior spaces that not only inspire and motivate people, but also to highlight the importance of well-being through sustainable and evidence-based approaches.

The project intends to recognize the importance of including neurodivergent populations in the context of universal design. The word “junction” means a point where two or more things join together. The youth center for teens 12-18 with high-functioning autism, such as Asperger’s, is a place to learn how to socialize and communicate through engaging, recreational, academic, and therapeutic activities. The overall design concept of this space is to join simple colors and geometric shapes and stack them on top of each other to create space and depth. The incorporation of color psychology not only helps in the social and communication development of these individuals, but also acts as a means of wayfinding throughout the building.

Ever since I was a child, I loved creating spaces out of paper, fabric, cardboard, toothpicks, or anything else that I could find at home. As time passed, I started using more sophisticated media and building, planning, and painting my own miniature spaces. I realized how much I loved creating and building an environment, and in my search for new creative endeavors, I enrolled in the Interior Design program at FIT. During the past few years, I’ve learned how the environments and spaces we design affect people in different ways, and that’s why sustainability and biophilia became recurring elements in my projects. I believe that sustainability is a key to a better and healthier future for us and our planet. The world as we know it today is changing and it’s all thanks to us, the designers! Schools are a place for education, but should also serve to encourage inspiration and curiosity. Designing “Bright Horizons” was more of a challenge than anticipated, as it had to be designed with durability and safety in mind due to the wear and tear it will be exposed to over the years. The purpose of this project was to give children an opportunity and encourage them to explore their senses. Drawing a child’s attention to the five senses, and discussing them, increases understanding of and communication about the world around them. Our goal is to get them to bloom in a tension-free environment.

“Mind over Matter” is a nonprofit organization that runs an outpatient rehabilitation facility designed for seniors who need help reintegrating into society after suffering an injury or illness that impaired their ability to communicate socially with others. This clinic is here to bring seniors a sense of belonging, with considerations of wellness design, barrier-free inclusive design, and biophilic design, which will greatly help with their health and well-being. This project is important to me as it is a way to design for those in our population who are often overlooked. Speech therapy is more commonly geared toward children, but it is just as important for those who are older and have endured a long-term illness or trauma of some sort, causing them to lose their ability and confidence to communicate.

I strive to create a connection between people and the physical world in my work. I am intrigued by what individuals consider comfort, and how to address the varying sensitivities of everyone in a space. Simply making a space comfortable is not the extent of my duty as a designer, which is why I always consider the way users interact with their surroundings. In order to achieve this, I often use materials that are handmade or natural to promote connectivity to our environment. Additionally, it is a central belief of mine that light has the ability to enhance our lives. Whether it’s through the warmth we feel from the sun or a dim lamp that we use to relax, it is constantly influencing our happiness and comfort.

When it comes to interior design, I focus on the overall comfort and the feeling of utter joy a space brings to a person, making them want to stay there forever. Whether it is a living room or a high-luxury lounge, my main focus is to always give the person a moment of awe when entering a room. A lot of my inspiration comes from the architect Louis Kahn and his talent for using literal shapes to create these immense spaces that make you feel important. In the midst of 2020, most designers were forced to find a new, digital way of creating spaces the best way they could. Experimenting for the first time, I created the image of the living room entirely in Photoshop. Using digital design to create spaces that would bring people a sense of comfort and joy was my silver lining to this pandemic.

This project allowed me to truly connect to the users and create a space I would have loved as a young girl. I made the concept of the center a sense of home because home isn’t just a physical place; it’s a feeling. It is a place where you should feel comfortable, safe, and empowered to be yourself. Growing up and seeing what women and their children go through on a daily basis, with little to no help, would make me think, “there has to be a better way.” My work explores the challenges battered women and children face and how to make them feel safe in their temporary homes. “Hope’s Door” will provide the residents with the tools they need to enter society feeling proud and confident. What makes this center so special are the programs offered to the residents. My intent is to tackle issues that are not currently being supported, those that could make true change in domestic violence and its vicious cycle. My design utilized natural materials to draw out inspiration and security though light and textures. I have designed each space throughout the center to specifically support freedom and independence.
