MESSAGE PRESiDENT FROM THE
Here we have the work of over 500 graduating Art and Design students—every one of them a marvel! Imagine the challenges they faced this year. Forced by the pandemic to work from their homes, denied the in-studio, shoulder-to-shoulder, hands-on learning experience they expected, they nevertheless forged ahead, defying all obstacles. They created makeshift work stations in their bedrooms, basements, kitchen corners and other unlikely locations. Focused, hardworking and energetic, they applied their ingenuity to learn, explore, experiment and achieve. And as we see from this catalogue, they succeeded. The work in this catalogue represents 16 of the School of Art and Design’s programs. In it we not only see the students’ finished products, but also images of how those projects evolved. These images help to reveal the creative process and the students’ individuality. Through it all, we sense their resilience and determination. Indeed, this vibrant catalogue— with its bright bold colors—pays homage to their optimism and extraordinary strength. I offer congratulations to these students and to the families and friends who supported them throughout this difficult year. Congratulations as well to the stalwart Art and Design faculty whose own skills and ingenuity rose to the pandemic’s challenge and provided guidance to their students with diligence and care. THE WORLD DESIGN TRANSFORMED OF
IS BEING
The world of design is being transformed by experiences of discovery. The combination of extraordinary visual display, immersive storytelling, environmental graphics, architecture, and digital technology, is reshaping brand activations, exhibitions, events, and pop-ups. Graduating Students in the Visual Presentation and Exhibition Design BFA create experiences and activations. Experiences that can tell stories about a brand or advocate for a cause. Places that can improve the way we learn or reinforce activities that can improve our lives.
BY
The capstone design project is the culmination of a two-year journey; students find their voice through research, concept design, advanced visualization, and physical construction. They take ownership of their ideas through interviews with industry leaders, development of their own storytelling approach, and the fabrication of an inspiring design in a public space.

Many college students struggle with finances while attending school, causing them to be unprepared for future economic challenges. Discover Card is one of the few corporations that provides accessible financial resources to students, and wants to sponsor a pop up experience to further extend their help. This educational activation will help college students better understand banking by assisting them with creating financial plans. To ensure students feel comfortable, the activation will be in the form of a classic American diner where visitors can grab a bite to eat and discuss their questions/concerns with an advisor. When designing, I strive to create original experiences that are exciting, fun, and interesting while still being innovative and unconventional. After being exposed to many intriguing creative opportunities, I plan to make my mark in the experiential design industry upon graduation with hopes of obtaining expertise designing themed environments for creative corporations.

The window design focuses on theatricality and surrealism with oversized gears and a fantastic replica of a pocket watch with mannequin hands gracefully sweeping across the face. The window design highlights a select line of Cartier timepieces and their renowned history of watchmaking. Graphic elements and specialized lighting will enhance the window and the merchandise story. In addition to window design, my professional interests include visual merchandising, graphic design, prop and set creation, fabrication, and creative consulting. RICHARD AUFFANT As an individual, I strive to bring joy into people’s lives and create memorable moments. Being an experiential designer, I can create these moments utilizing the skills I’ve learned studying Visual Presentation and Exhibition Design. Combining that passion with my love for exploring and cooking food, I have created a mobile pop-up food experience called “UberEats: The Caravan.” I was motivated by the effects that COVID-19 had on the restaurant industry. Witnessing establishments struggle economically fueled my drive to make a change for both restaurant owners and their clients. “UberEats: The Caravan” is a mobile pop-up experience that travels to various locations creating an environment for local restaurants to host an evening to raise awareness about their cuisine, further supporting their business and the local economy faced with economic hardship from the pandemic.

The multi-disciplinary skills that I have learned in Visual Presentation and Exhibition Design encompass concept development, branding, product development, environmental graphics, and creative storytelling. These skills, combined with my passion for the fitness industry, fueled my capstone design project “Breathe by Nike.” “Breathe by Nike” is inspired by the effects of COVID-19. Wearing a mask transformed exercise activities and inspired me to develop the brand Breathe. Breathe functions as a sub-brand for Nike and helps customers navigate face masks to align with their specific sporting activity and needs. There is nothing more satisfying than traveling the world and learning about the beauty of different cultures surrounding us. However, I also believe it’s essential to recognize the human rights repression that many people face and find ways to help resolve these issues. In order to grasp and understand the world around me, I decided to focus on designing an exhibition that focuses on child labor in the countries of Southern Asia and South America. “Through A Child’s Eyes” is an exhibition that brings viewers into these children’s shoes to highlight abuse and provide viewers with a first-person perspective of their fragmented lifestyles and experiences. Throughout my years at FIT, I learned that storytelling is vital for viewers to connect to the design. My goal with “Through A Child’s Eyes” is to engage, educate, and influence viewers through the use of photography, graphics, and immersive technologies.

As a visual identity and creative experience designer, my goal is to communicate the love and excitement I have for design through my work. I’ve developed a passion for brand identity, creative storytelling, and visual conceptualization throughout my FIT experience, striving to create intimate and meaningful experiences through purposeful design. Whenever I encounter an opportunity to bring a brand to life, my strategic and analytical personality looks to explore all possibilities to elevate the brand and connect with its audience on a more personal level. The “Platinum Revamp Project” is a conceptual brand redesign that exercises my passion for both design and cheerleading. Incorporating an aspect of visual identity, experiential design, and event design, I’ve created a large-scale project that explores the importance of branding and how a brand can elevate its prestige in its industry.

Ironically, I never considered myself an artist, but I was always a creative person, finding new ways to express myself. My leading creative outlet has always been theater. I worked backstage as a crew member in high school, where I helped design, build, and paint the sets and programmed all the lighting. At FIT, I honed a vast range of skills and expanded my interests into graphic and environmental design. For the first time in my life, I feel like an artist. “Broadway in the Streets” is a pop-up event paying tribute to the Broadway entertainment community. Since the theater industry was hit hard during the pandemic, I hope to inspire people to return to the excitement on the Broadway stages. The bright lights of NYC and the timeless design of old Broadway theaters inspired my plan. This project brings together everything I love about being a designer.

My capstone project aims to share the joy and satisfaction experienced from learning, tinkering, making, creating, problem-solving, and, ultimately, understanding. Specifically, this project is a proposal for a maker space that focuses on creative technology. Aesthetically, the space will capture the “hidden magic” of creative technology, using projection mapping and programmable lighting. Art, design, and history are at the core of my artistic practice; the intersection of these realms is central to each of my endeavors. Designing spatially through the lens of fine art inspires me to reinterpret traditional art exhibitions and explore unconventional curatorial and design concepts. “Contemporary Canons of the East and West” is an exhibition of Chinese and American contemporary art that seeks to bridge the gap between artists and art history from opposite ends of the world by elucidating the histories and origins of shared formal elements in their works. Furthermore, the exhibition divulges the transcontinental influence evident in distinct artworks to exhibition visitors. Through compelling design and curation that incorporates digital and dynamic elements, visitors encounter the artists’ practices, environments, and the greater significance of art movements and methods from the two nations most prevalent in the art world today.

There will be multiple opportunities for creative play and thinking, including arts and crafts, dancing, finger painting, obstacle courses, and more. The variety of experiences will accommodate diversity among the children and will meet varying needs. Seeing this project come together has been very rewarding and satisfying for me. Beyond FIT, I’m interested in opportunities that will allow me to work with my hands and create experiential environments. I also enjoy graphic design, window design, and branding.

I have always had a strong interest in luxury brand fashion and retail. My favorite designers are ones with an unconventional style. Brands like Gucci, with a mix of prints and textures, or Off-White’s celebrity personality, which translates exclusivity into every product, have a mesmerizing effect on me. I enjoy brand design projects because they force me to break away from my own aesthetic and focus on developing fresh concepts, brand identity components, and creative storytelling. I love working on events and environments with layers of design experiences and the challenge of orchestrating them into one cohesive theme. My capstone project takes inspiration from transformative multi-use spatial design. I created a modular infrastructure to house contemporary brands in a pop-up environment. The structure’s design attributes transform and accommodate each brand to include an LED illuminated façade, environmental graphics, and visual merchandising solutions.

I am a multi-disciplinary designer specializing in pop-up, retail, and experimental design. Completing my BFA in VPED and my AAS degree in Fashion Design provided me with a greater understanding and appreciation of branding. Combining these two degree programs has sharpened my eye and enabled me to design precisely for clients. As a curious, experimental individual, I am a problem solver across various disciplines. 2021 is the year that sustainability should be on everyone’s mind. The pandemic has sharpened our senses to the world around us and people have a renewed interest in environmental protection and practices. Every year, millions of plastics enter the oceans and then spill into rivers. “F-LASTIC” is a collaboration between FREITAG and Oceanworks to introduce a solution to replace the traditional plastic shopping bag. Combining fashion, product, and experience, the ultimate goal is to change people’s habits in a positive way and help reduce environmental degradation.

“Film Pop Now” is a pop-up single theater room experience that showcases an upcoming movie. This is a modular building that can be designed to fit seamlessly in the desired section of a theme park. Guests journey through a themed space that tells a story leading up to the featured film. The main theater room has a variety of small private seating sections that are available to view the movie in a completely immersive experience. Professionally, I aspire to tell stories in a three-dimensional space in fun and informal ways. I am passionate about design in theme parks, children’s museums, aquariums, zoos, and related environments. In the future, I plan to pursue opportunities to work in a design position where the main focus is for people to have fun and share the enjoyment.

JAIPREET UPPAL Growing up in the New York metropolitan area, I have always had a fascination with all aspects of the design world. As a child, art and design gave me a way to express myself. As I grew older, I experimented with photography, fashion, architecture, and interior design. Choosing one as a major challenged me until I realized I could combine them in one career as a spatial experience designer. The multidisciplinary nature of design is central to my thesis, with the design of a collaborative studio. “Miscellaneous Studio” brings together independent artists, designers, and resources across multiple design fields, including fashion design, photography, architecture, and interior design. The goal of the studio is to support artists and designers creating more impactful projects in a collective space by bringing together technological support, educational resources, and display areas.

“BelvederePods” is a collection and system of outdoor retail displays. These displays would be rentable to online stores, providing them with a way to give their targeted audience the experience of insight into their brand through window displays. Store windows are typically unavailable to online retailers who do not have physical storefronts the way brick-and-mortar stores do. With these installations, online stores can create environments to display their merchandise and advertise their brand to people in different locations. Since coming to the VPED major at FIT, I have enjoyed working with window displays, as well as building and construction. Therefore, I would love to gain more experience in the retail world, potentially as a visual merchandiser, as well as in a fabrication or production company. I love hands-on projects and hope to continue creating art and designs throughout my career path.

Dogs have always held a special place in my heart. I wanted to design an event that celebrates them and supports the shelters that many dogs reside in while seeking a permanent home. Having the goal of re-imagining the dog adoption experience in mind, I decided to sponsor this event with the online pet retailer Chewy because they are reliable, trendy, and able to understand the connection between people and their pets. An emphasis is placed on Chewy’s charitable efforts as well as giving visitors the opportunity to support the rescue dog community. This event will provide Chewy with a temporary physical presence while various activations create an exciting and friendly atmosphere that encourages visitors to stay, learn, and establish new connections. Pet lovers of all experience levels will leave the event feeling informed and confident that they can provide for their new or current best friend.

“Moonlight: The Drive-in Experience” is a multiexperiential entertainment proposal that partners Tribeca Enterprise with IMAX. The goal is to create a modern multi-experiential drive-in concert/theater that provides an immersive environment for people in a nostalgic setting. Visitors will also have the option to leave their cars and journey through various activities including a campfire, a glow-in-the-dark memory lane, gigantic lawn games, and more! Professionally, I’m very interested in the entertainment and exhibition industry and would like to grow in that field. My aim is to work with a company that executes experiential events. I enjoy working both with my hands and in the digital realm. Most importantly, connecting with the audience is the best part of experiential design, and I would like to continue that alongside a company that holds similar values.

Design is a mix of craft, science, storytelling, propaganda, and philosophy. It is these attributes that I have discovered during my time at FIT that have made me into a people-centered creator. At my truest self, I have a contagious enthusiasm for new ideas, design, culture, and nature. With every project I design, I look for ways to incorporate sustainable materials, work with meaningful causes, and undertake them with a hands-on approach. “Hidden Imprints” is an interpretive sculptural experience that brings together my passions for sustainability, religion, and design. By creating an intersection where these topics are woven together, I challenge each visitor to dig deeper within themselves while at the same time asking them to zoom out and see themselves within a bigger picture. Sustainable materials, location, a particular sculptural approach, and engaging dialogue open the doors to a groundbreaking experiential design experience.

A person’s first impression deeply impacts their aura. As a designer, my initial intention is to create something visually powerful that spreads positive feelings to whoever approaches it, no matter how big or small. My work introduces supplementary, contemporary, and pristine ideas for individuals to experience. I deliver visions out of passion and pure motivation from the heart. With the necessary foundation, experience, and practice of edification, I strive to not only make people happy with my work, but to provide energy of invigoration. “The Misunderstood Feline” is a social, educational space for people to learn how cats make loving pets, and how to respectfully treat animals. The purpose is to dispel misconceptions about pets and inform visitors about animal welfare. This project aims to promote and increase monthly animal adoptions and provide communities with an exciting hospitality space open to conversations about animal welfare and reform.
