We host Potters Bar Town and at this time I would like to welcome their committee, coaching staff, players and supporters ahead of tonight’s game.

7 goals in 2 games and another 2 clean sheets puts us 6th in the Isthmian Premier, it’s still early days but we have to keep moving forward the way we are, game by game, step by step.

Lots has been made of the size of the playing squad and I just want to clarify that it’s not because we are tightening our belts or not being ambitious. Gary has a squad with an incredible mentality, a togetherness you can’t buy and when we are looking at players their character has to be a major part of that recruitment alongside their talent. It’s ever increasingly hard to do that in the economic climate we are in but we continually look to find a way and build on this momentum.

They find themselves in second spot at the moment, and there are no surprises in that as far as I’m concerned. They are big, powerful and well organised and have a manager who I respect as one of the best non-league managers out there. I’ve come across Sammy Moore on and off the pitch and have nothing but respect for what he does.

We will need to be at our best tonight.

We are in good form at the moment, and my squad never fails to surprise me. Every time there is slight doubt about our squad and their ability they come out swinging, and trust me this is a team the fans should be proud of, as this group of players don’t come around often in non-league football.

Midweek fixtures are rather more common than we experienced in Isthmian SE. 42 games as opposed to 38 - so here we are with Potters Bar Town hopefully having negotiated the QE Bridge without any interference from airborne eco weirdoes. Potters Bar are another of those sides flirting with the top of the division which is still settling down.

semi-pro game in the south, the more odd it seems that Hastings Utd Mark 1 and Hastings Town played so much Southern League football. Heading west for games at Dorchester and Weymouth would see us going past Worthing and Bognor Regis. In those days I didn't mind the far flung Southern League but the structure of the game definitely baffled me.

The FA had it's tortuous ways - which dragged out longer than expected because of the disruptions of Covid - as we recall, of getting the semipro game revamped and it is now far better.

BISHOPS STORTFORD RESULT  PUT RIGHT

If a game ever warranted a 0-0, last Saturday's did. The two sides cancelled each other out. The initial positive of a disappointing afternoon was Lloyd Dawes starting but after 40 minutes he was off. And getting on the end of a corner ultimately settled the game in the visitor's favour.

All more than put right with successive away wins at Wingate & Finchley and Herne Bay. Aggregate of 7-0. 6 points and up to 6th in a fluid league table.

Work interfered so Footballwebpages and Twitter to the rescue once again. As it will have to this evening. Should be ok for the FA Trophy tie against Burgess Hill here on Saturday.

There you go - Potters Bar Town - red symbolare on the extremities of the Isthmian zone and this evening will be one of their longer journeys. Is this the first time we've met? Had a look through our previous Premier Division seasons and can't find them.

Like our previous Pilot Field opposition, Bishop's Stortford - Potters Bar have been shuffled sideways to and from the Southern League. The more I look at the structure - past and present - of the

Indeed it is. In my last offering I included that article about my colleague's under £100 flight to, and football in, Italy. Luke used to be a teacher over north Kent way and amongst his pupils in his science class was Bailey Akehurst who started this season on loan here from Gillingham…….

Mo Munden, who we loved to hate. This was at Cheriton Road, 2002-3, United lost 1-0 to Folkestone Invicta, an evening of huge disappointment as it nigh on confirmed relegation. Despite that, U"s fans hung on at the end to shake Mo's hand as he was calling it a day. Horrible evening, we knew we were all but relegated, Mo had given us lots of stick down the years but a nice touch to see out the end of his career.

And to wrap up the small world tale - Geoff lives in Angeles City about a 15 minute trike ride from Phillies Sports Grill & Bar, my favourite haunt for refreshments where I compile Gut Feeling. I shall have a San Miguel or three with him in the next few weeks - I fly out on November 11.

And the world gets smaller on a larger scale. Twitter and Facebook have their uses and spring up all manner of surprises. No more so than Geoff Coe who I found on Twitter. Initially talking about Millwall and the difficulties of making it to games as he lives out in the Philippines - my home from home.

Anyway, replied to his tweet and in the subsequent exchange it transpired that before he went overseas he'd neen involved with Fisher Athletic - Press Officer, Programmme editor and PA announcer plus PLUS sorting out away travel for Ashford when he lived there! Turns out he's well acquainted with Mo Munden who you long term followers will recall keeping goal for Dover Athletic, Fisher Athletic and Folkestone Invicta. One of semi-pro football's great characters we last encountered 20 seasons ago.

Stuart Playford deserved a special mention after United's spectacular 5-0 win at Kettering in that 4th Qualifying Round FA Cup replay....... This was duly posted in the Ghost fanzine

Stortford stay top!

Bishop’s Stortford, seven matches unbeaten and with a rather incredible six clean sheets from their last six matches, welcomed Carshalton Athletic, the Robins having increased their firepower recently with the arrival of Alex Akrofi from Aveley. The Blues got their noses in front five minutes before the break through Mark Haines, who headed home to delight the majority of the four hundred and eighty one in attendance, and the home faithful would have been further delighted when Ollie Cook saw red for the Robins soon after the restart. Two-nil was the score with ten minutes left, Anthony Church doubling home advantage, and that was that.

Potters Bar Town hadn’t managed a win from their previous three games and were hopeful of changing that record as they travelled to Corinthian-Casuals - and they were actually in Tolworth after Casuals got the go-ahead to reopen their storm damaged King George’s Field for the first time in a month. The hosts, without a win since the opening day, fell behind on nineteen minutes, Jacques Kpohomouh opening the scoring and baffling our autocorrect, but Casuals levelled a quarter of an hour later, Misha Djemali delighting those in pink and brown. Six minutes from time the Scholars got a winner, Tyler Christian-Law ensuring that his side stay second - and Miles Mitchell-Nelson's late red card didn't spoil their party.

Third place Enfield Town travelled to fourth

place Cray Wanderers in our match of the day. The sides had contrasting fortunes prior to this match, the Towners without a win in three whilst Wands hit four in midweek and had taken seven points from their last nine - but after a closely contended first half the visitors went ahead on forty nine minutes, Marcus Wyllie opening the scoring. The equaliser came through Dan Bassett on the hour, and that was that - a result which saw the Towners slip to fifth and Wands to seventh.

Aveley had a new signing in place as they welcomed Haringey Borough - defender Siju Odelusi signing on. The Millers had slipped a little, with only one win from their previous four league matches, whilst Borough had only one defeat from their last nine league matches as they headed to Parkside - but it was the hosts who struck first and early, Kenny Aileru with his third goal of the campaign. It took until ten minutes from time until we had another goal, but it also went to the hosts, George Sykes making it two-nil- and they were more comfortable by the end, Garrett Kelly adding a third just before full time.

Hornchurch, in sixth at start of play, welcomed Horsham, a place behind. The Urchins had won four consecutive league matches before knockout football got in the way, and they went ahead in this one on twenty nine minutes, Liam Nash with his ninth of the season. The Hornets, three games unbeaten coming into this one, were level just before the break courtesy of Tom Richards, but level only for three minutes and the time they took to eat their oranges, Charlie Stimson restoring home advantage. Hornchurch made quite sure of three points when Jack Munns added a third from the spot, five minutes from time. Five hundred and fifty four watched on.

Nickname(s): ‘The Scholars’,  Bar

The foundations for the Mount Grace Old Scholars (Potters Bar) Football Association were laid in spring 1960.

The school's first team were having a good season, but many of the boys were due to leave at Easter. It was then that Ken Barrett; the P.E. Master of Mount Grace School asked them and old 'Scholars' to support him in raising a team.

We were accepted into the Barnet & District League on 29th June 1960. Ken enlisted Bert Wright, the school's Caretaker and Sven Hammarling and then Bill Venneear. Reserve, 3rd and 4th Teams were added in the following seasons.

In 1965, the Barnet & District and Finchley & District Leagues merged to form the North London Combination. By 1967/68 we had won the Premier Division and the Reserves the Division 1 title and were admitted to Division 2 of the Herts County League.

In 1976 Bill Venneear and Clive Cavalier stepped down and Peter Waller, then the 3rd Team manager, was ‘persuaded’ to take over.

In 1978 many recommended the closure of the Club. But we continued and our three sides were relegated. But from the experience grew a desire never to repeat the mistakes again. Micky Holson became Manager and in 1981/82 we were in the Premier Division, as Division One Champions.

Clive Cavalier rejoined in 1979 and with Peter Waller planned the new Clubhouse and changing rooms. Construction started in July 1982 and in six months, with Frank Bentley's considerable involvement and help

from members, the clubhouse opened on the 9th January 1983.

In 1990/91, we reached the FA Vase 3rd round, before we came back from a 24 point deficit to win the Herts Senior County League Premier Division and the Aubrey Cup.

We accepted promotion to the South Midlands League and changed our playing name to Potters Bar Town FC, to reflect the growing stature of the club and promote the Town. Don Newman stood down as Chairman after 11 years.

We installed the Floodlight system in 1993, the Youth section was reformed in 1993/94 and FA Cup football came in 1995/96. At the end of that season, Peter Waller stepped down as Secretary, after twenty years, to become Chairman.

In 1996/97, the South Midlands Premier Division title was won, but we knew there was too much work to do to apply to the Isthmian League.

The following season, 1997/98, the club reached the quarter final of the FA Vase, going down 2-0 to Kidsgrove Athletic, only conceding in the second period of extra time. We were Runners-up in the league, but won the Challenge Trophy and the South Midlands Floodlight Cup. The Reserves went one better, winning Reserve Division One.

In 1998, Peter Waller and Eddie Harvey, secured a new 21-year lease on the ground, whilst on the site the old school was demolished, replaced by a new Ladbrooke School, Care Home, new car park and Watkins Rise.

Sadly, we lost Bill Venneear in November 2000, a victim of cancer. The 150 Seater Main Stand was added in May 2001.

For Season 2001/02, Steve Smart became Manager and by 2002/03, with Paul Surridge, we achieved 3rd place in the league and won the Herts Charity Shield. The Potters Bar Charity Cup followed in 2003/04, but 2004/05 was the most successful of his 3 year reign, winning four trophies; the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division and the Premier Division Cup, Herts Charity Shield and Potters Bar Charity Cup.

The club went on to take the title by sixteen points, remaining unbeaten in the final 19 league matches, including sixteen victories.

Off the pitch, in 6 weeks Club members and Players carried out major improvements and we passed the FA Ground grading and earned promotion to the Southern League Division 1 East for season 2005/06.

Steve Smart stepped down; Kevin Lucas was appointed, and then replaced by Andy Milne. Though we were bottom for six months, we would not give up. Andy Leese agreed to join us in February 2006 and with new players our fortunes changed and we survived relegation, finishing 16th. The club was devastated that season by the death of Ken Woodward, who had spearheaded the ground improvements.

For 2006/07, we were moved to the Ryman League Division 1 North. We enjoyed a most successful FA Cup run, losing away by 3-2 to full-time Woking, of the Conference National, in the 4th qualifying round, after wins against Waltham Abbey, Wealdstone, Maldon Town and Margate by 2-1 away. But we won the Herts FA Charity Cup, for the first time, but lost Kevin Wilmot, as Secretary. Andy Leese left in May 2007 and we appointed Steve Browne, though he resigned in December 2008.

In the summer of 2007, a spectators covered area was added and a turnstile block. All four turnstiles have a unique history, as they were all in use at the old Wembley Stadium, until it closed in 2000. Adam Lee was appointed in 2008 and for 5 years served the Club with great distinction and commitment, always improving our league position and reached the Herts Senior Cup Final in 2012/13 for the only time.

In May 2010, to celebrate our 50th year, many former players returned, including 9 who had played in the very

first match in September 1960! Bert Wright, one of our 'founders', received the FA 50 years service Award. To commemorate the occasion, the Club reverted to Maroon shirts, the same colours that we wore in June 1960. In January 2012, Bert Wright died at the age of 93, having given the club 52 years of service. In his honour, we renamed the Main stand after him.

For 2013/14 we were back in the Southern League. In late 2013, Adam Lee stepped down, succeeded by Jack Friend, then in early 2015, by Steve Ringrose. Our Free Season Ticket Offer was launched for 2014/15 and made the national press. Sadly, we lost Eddie Harvey.

In 2015/16 we reached the semi-final of the League Cup, and then in 2016/17 we made the 4th qualifying round of the F.A. Cup for the second time, including a replay win at Bath City on penalties (our best result against a team from a higher level).

In Summer 2017 the Clubroom was totally refurbished and in August 2018, after raising £100,000 ourselves and 3 years work by John Gibbs, our new Changing Room complex was opened.

For 2017/18 we were back in the Isthmian League Division 1 North. In September 2017, Peter Waller, celebrated 50 years of service to the Club and received an FA Award. Steve Ringrose 'promoted' James Duncan to Head Coach and several experienced players arrived.

We started with another successful run in the FA Cup, losing to National South Play Off Finalists Hampton & Richmond Borough, whilst in the FA Trophy we fell to Southern League Premier Division Champions, Hereford, both after replays. We then targeted the Play offs, being 8th in January.

However, in our remaining 22 fixtures, we won 15 and drew 5 and came through to take 2nd spot and promotion, with a win on the final day. As a result, we proudly started 2018/19 in the Premier Division.

The 2018/19 season was to present two challenges:

One: Make the necessary ground improvements to reach the next level ground grading requirements which meant the addition of two new stands - one a 100seater and the other a 100 standing - this was achieved on time - thanks to the hard work of club members and supporters and fund-raising and grants.

Two: Establish ourselves at step three. This we didfinishing 16th in the in the Bostik Premier League despite the departure of our management team in the

season, but we again promoted from within with Lee O'Leary stepping up to player/manager and being joined by Scott Cousins as joint manager. It was another season of significant progress.

The shortened 2019/20 season was another successful one as the club solidified its position at Step three and gained national interest as we took Barnet to a replay in the FA Cup Fourth Round Qualifying, whilst the home game being shown on the BBC with a crowd of 2,011 in attendance.

The 2020/21 season was also curtailed, with the last game being played in October, a 3-1 loss against Leatherhead. The season’s termination did not prevent us from continuing to make progress on and off the pitch however, as on the pitch we were able to enjoy 3-0 wins against both Cheshunt and Cray Wanderers, the latter ending our opponent’s 17 game unbeaten run.

Off the pitch, further improvements were made to the renamed LA Construction Stadium, as a state-of-theart sprinkler system, a perimeter barrier around the pitch and a new draining system were all installed, whilst the main grandstand was changed to a maroon and white colour with new seats and a repaint in order to match the new club colours.

The 2021/22 season saw a return to playing football and a complete season completed. We went out of the FA Cup in the first qualifying round away to Stowmarket Town but enjoyed our best run to date in the FA Trophy before losing 3-1 away to Braintree Town of the National League South in the second round proper. With an unprecedented wet winter the club was hampered by having a number of home game postponed due to a continuing water logged pitch which put us behind in league fixtures -a lot of mid season work was put into the pitch to aid its recovery. Also Lee O’Leary resigned as manager but the club appointed the experienced Sammy Moore which saw a change in the team’s performances and the club achieved a final position of 13th with 53 points – their best yet at step three.

SAMMY MOORE  -  MANAGER

Sammy Moore was appointed Scholars manager in January 2022, taking charge of his first game on the 1st of February, losing 2-3 to Cray Wanderers. Having kept us in the Isthmian Premier Division last season, Moore is looking to mount a playoff charge this term and will be relying on a wealth of experience to do so, having previously been in charge of the likes of Concord Rangers and Hemel Hempstead Town. Moore’s guidance will be priceless as we look to have a successful season at the Lantern Stadium.

DARREN BEALE  -  ASSISTANT MANAGER

Darren Beale joined the club as part of Moore’s coaching staff and his previous stints working with the manager at Hemel Hempstead and Concord Rangers means the pair have proven themselves to be a successful partnership in the past. Darren boasts an impressive CV, having also worked at Dover Athletic, Gillingham's academy, Hythe and Ramsgate. He also spent some time coaching in Spain.

Lee Protheroe has experience working in the Isthmian Premier Division, has joined PBTFC this season from Wingate and Finchley, and his knowhow will be useful to our squad in the season.

MANNY AGBOOLA - Athletic keeper joins the side having previously played for Isthmian Premier League side Corinthian Casuals. The 23-year-old has also had spells at Oxford United, where he was signed professionally, Billericay Town and a loan spell at Staines Town. A product of Reading’s academy, Manny will undoubtedly bring quality to the side for the upcoming season.

TED COLLINS - Keeper on loan from Colchester United.

FRAzER SHAW – classy reliable defender and team skipper. Brought in by manager at the back end of last season to provide stability and experience at the back. Played a massive part in securing our final league position. At Arsenal and West Ham Utd as a youth his senior clubs include Dulwich Hamlet, Leyton Orient, Concord Rangers and Chelmsford City.

FINLAY TITCHMARSH – Talented, tenacious 19-year-old full-back signed during the summer from Royston Town where he made 36 appearances. Came through the youth ranks at National side Barnet and includes spells at Staines and Ware before joining Royston.

JACQUES KPOHOMOUH – the 25-year-old Guinean is a commanding defender. Known as Kpog or Pog to his friends. Signed at the back end of last season and turned in some outstanding performances in Bars improved form. Came as a full-back but looks to have made a central position his own. Previously with Hemel Hempstead.

ETHAN KAISER – Central defender signed during the summer who has impressed with preseason displays. An Academy player at Carshalton before signing for QPR. More recently has played a big part in Bedfont Sports success before joining Cray Wanderers. Scored against the Scholars in Crays 3-2 win at Potters Bar last season.

Midfield

SAMUEL MCRITCHIE – will hope to add to our already strong midfield in his maiden year in Maroon. The Australian is a good friend of Moore's and will hope to contribute to what looks to be an exciting squad this campaign.

CALVIN DICKSON – Calvin joined the club from Northwood in the early stages of last season and made his debut on the 26th of October in a 0-2 loss against Ware in the Hertfordshire County Cup First Round. A player who isn’t afraid to get stuck in, Dickson is an important member of Moore's squad. Always gives his all and has established himself as a fans favourite.

TYLER CHRISTIAN-LAW – Experienced central-midfielder Tyler has managed to attain playing time at a higher level, making 17 appearances for Braintree Town in the 2019/20 season, scoring two goals. A good leader, Tyler will be hoping to raise the games of those around him, whilst also hoping to make vital contributions on the pitch with his vision and ability to read the game. His former clubs include Hanwell Town.

KAS AIDOO – joined the Scholars having played in the Isthmian Premier League previously with Cray Wanderers, which will be valuable to Sammy’s Scholars. The 20-year-old developed at Charlton’s academy and made four appearances for Vanarama National League South side Eastbourne Borough last year. Aidoo’s experience at a higher level, including an appearance in the EFL Trophy against Leyton Orient in November 2020, will be vital to the team for this campaign.

MO KAMARA – Mo joined the club from Ashford United and will be very useful to Sammy Moore and his coaching staff because of how versatile he is. Kamara also has experience paying for the likes of Margate, Herne Bay, Moseley and Greenwich Borough. The new arrival will hope to add to an already exciting squad for the 2022/23 season. Strong and pacy and capable of playing across the defence or midfield.

Forwards

DEJON NOEL-WILLIAMS – Powerful, pacy centreforward Dejon arrives at the club having made 16 appearances for Vanarama National League South side Braintree Town last term. Just two years ago NoelWilliams was playing for Spanish third tier side CD Guadalajara, which was followed by spells with Hemel Hempstead and Gloucester City. The 23-year-old also has experience on the international stage, playing for Grenada.

QUENTIN MONVILLE – Strong, pacy, tricky striker Quentin joins the squad having had an impressive last season with Bowers & Pitsea in the Isthmian Premier Division, scoring three times in the league. Monville's arrival reunites the partnership between Monville and new signing Lewis Manor at the Bar, who also arrived from Bowers & Pitsea in May 2022. Monville was also on the scoresheet with a vital winner against Aldershot Town in the FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round to send his former club to the FA Cup First Round last season, where they lost 1-0 to Lincoln City. Quentin’s ability to get on the end of crosses and convert penalties means he is sure to have a big impact at the club this term. Believed to be responsible for the “music” emanating from Bars changing room.

IKE OLAIYA – Young striker who makes the step up to men's football this campaign having featured previously for our U18's side. The youngster is known for being a clinical finisher and will hope to force his way into the starting eleven despite his age.

JOE BOACHIE – Already a fan favourite, Joe arrived from Concord on a dual contract with the Beachboys which soon became a full deal with Bar last campaign and has already cemented his place in the side. A cool finisher, Boachie is most fondly known by the Bar Army for his long-range stunner to open the scoring against arch-rivals Wingate & Finchley in a 2-0 win at the Maurice Rebak Stadium in October 2021. Winning “Goal of the Season” at the club’s annual awards. Has also had spells at Dagenham & Redbridge and Stamford.

LEWIS MANOR – Exciting new signing Lewis was an influential player for his previous club, even gaining the nickname “Mr Bowers” from his time there. He scored an impressive 22 goals for the club last season in 44 appearances. The striker will add to an already deadly frontline for the upcoming season. He will hope to score some vital goals for the Scholars in what looks set to be an exciting season for Sammy Moore and the team. Has also previously appeared for Rayleigh Town and Billericay Town.

Canvey Island welcomed winless and now-managerless Wingate & Finchley, who saw boss Marc Weatherstone depart on Thursday - and the visiting side went ahead on nine minutes, Ben Siggers - who made a debut during midweek- opening the scoring direct from a free kick. It was nil-two midway through the half, Alkeo Bani doubling away advantage, and three-nil before the hour, Tyrique Clarke sending the away fans into dreamland. That’s how it ended, a result which sees Wingate climb out of the bottom four.

Hastings United, who started the day with top five hopes, travelled to take on the side who were promoted from Pitching In Isthmian South East alongside them last season, Herne Bay. United travelled to the Kent coast on the back of a run that saw them suffer only one defeat in six - and five clean sheets - and they were quickly ahead in this one, Kane Penn making it one-nil in the eleventh minute. They doubled their advantage just before the break, Alex Brefo making it two to the dismay of most of the five hundred and sixty one watching on, and it was three-nil nine minutes into the second half, Sam Adams with the visitors third. That turned out to be that, and only goal difference keeps Hastings out of the play-off places.

Billericay Town played host to Bognor Regis Town. The hosting Blues had looked in fine fettle of late, taking ten points from their previous twelve, whilst the Rocks also seemed to be on the up, with only one defeat in six - and it was the visitors who

struck first, Craig Robson putting them ahead after only eight minutes and silencing most of the eight hundred and fifty watching on. The Rocks struck second, too, Tom Chalaye making it two-nil on the hour, but the home fans were given hope when Anthony Jeffrey got one back with thirteen minutes left and hope became reality when Chris Dickson equalised eight minutes later. Right at the end the comeback was complete, Bradley Stevenson sending the visitors home with nothing.

Lewes defeated Margate twice last season, and it looked as if they were on their way to another victory over the Blues when Razz Coleman de-Graft put them ahead on twenty nine minutes at the Dripping Pan. Nine hundred and nine watched the game, and they would have been mostly delighted when Joe Taylor added a second just before the end. The Rooks climb to thirteenth.

Kingstonian welcomed Folkestone Invicta to Imperial Fields, home of Tooting & Mitcham United- and went ahead just before the break, Corey Parchment with the opening goal- a quite magnificent free kick breaking the deadlock. Invicta won both of last season’s encounters, seven-two on aggregate, but that wasn’t going to be repeated as Kieron Cadogen made it two-nil sixteen minutes from time. Invicta then saw Adam Yusuff dismissed, and that was that. Kingstonian are up to twelfth, Invicta down to fifteenth.

Nineteenth hosted twentieth as Bowers & Pitsea welcomed Brightlingsea Regent, both hoping for a win which might lift them out of the bottom four. Bowers, without a win since Saturday 20th August, went ahead on the hour, Michael Bareck, on from the bench, scoring for the second match in a row, but just before the end Jermaine Anderson equalised for the visitors, who haven’t won since August Bank Holiday Monday
