Welcome everyone to The Continental Pilot Field as we enter FA Trophy action vs Chippenham Town.

Knowing the journey there I wish the directors, management, staff, players and most importantly supporters of Chippenham Town the safest of trips here to Hastings today.

Last year little old Hastings knocked our opponents today out of the FA Cup, one of my favourite moments as ‘U’s Chairman/CEO. Today we look to knock them out of another FA competition and find ourselves back in form with back to back wins over Haringey Borough and Crawley Town.

Today it’s super important to show what we are

as a club, a growing vibrant exciting atmosphere like no other.

In my time at the club I have tried to make sure the Hastings mentality and voice is heard, I’ll continue to battle the elements to make sure we always keep true to ourselves and it’s important we continue down that road. We renew old rivalries today from our previous cup game against our visitors. They’ve had an up and down season so far, but their FA Cup run shows that they are a talented team and we will have to be at our best today.

We have good momentum at the moment, but we continually work from week to week looking at small p ercentages to improve our game. Our last two games have been very pleasing but they’ve been and gone and we have to look forward now.

When you're unable to see United in action these days, you end up relying heavily on social media to keep up. Usually it's work that interferes with a couple of 4 week sojourns way, way away in the Philippines. Where I am now. And at 2am or so, Sunday morning, I was able to enjoy 3 of Saturday's goals on Facebook posted by Wayne Southby. And on Monday evening I saw Joe Knight's video prese ntation too. Thanks to all concerned - great to be able to keep in touch.

arrangements are just that - you have to be realistic about recalls which we've already seen with Joe who is an exceptional talent to be getting in the Gills squad at just 17. Indeed not many 17 year olds feature in Isthmian Premier squads let alone EFL2. Enjoy Joe's contributions while you can!

Bit up and down lately - 4 frustrating narrow defeats, all single goal margins with 2 big away wins - we needed that Borough result last Saturday. Four goals a big bonus and despite those recent reversals, we still have a decent defensive record with only Bishop's Stortford having conceded less goals.

Memorable FA Cup win at Hardenhuish Park last season with United, then two levels below Chippenham, winning 1-0 thanks to the goal of the season from Kenny Pogue.

Chippenham are going well in this season's FA Cup with a recent 1st Round 1-0 win against EFL1 Lincoln City earning them a 2nd Round tie at old Southern League sparring partners of ours, Burton Albion. More EFL1 opposition for them tomorrow week.

Today's FA Trophy tie is just Chippenham's second visit here. We played them twice in our yoyo 2002-3 season. We were 6th in the Southern Premier after a 0-0 draw at Hardenhuish almost 20 years ago to the day - 9/11/02. Chippenham had been promoted to the Southern Prem as Western Division runners up the previous season while we were winning the Eastern Division.

Yoyo? How things had changed when we met here in April 03. Our FA Cup exit at Stevenage earlier in the season seemed to spark off a horrendous run of defeats and when we kicked off on 12/4/03 we were 4 points adrift of safety with 6 games to play. We were to win that must win game 2-1 with goals from Tony Burt and Danny Simmonds to give us a real chance of a big escape. Which all never happened. What an up and down season that was.

You have to wonder if Jefferson will reach that half century. Imagine if, say, Danny Simmonds (pictured below) was still doing the business pitchside. 2019 saw him here in the Manchester United Legends game and he looked well capable of running midfield.

Contact with our old Southern League opponents from West Sussex is infrequent these days. The last game with points at stake was a 0-0 draw just over a week after that win over Chippenham 20 long seasons ago. Sussex Senior Cup games won't be top priority till the final looms with the prospect of a trophy but those Sussex bragging rights - bit like the Burgess Hill Trophy tie recently, eh.

All reflected in Gary's team selection Tuesday evening (Early Wednesday morning for me in the Philippines). Pretty much a first team line up and a fine result as penalties decided a Cup tie for the 2nd time this season.

I shall be following today's game from Phillies Sports Bar in Angeles City (pictured below). Thursday sees me on the 50 mile bus ride from Manila which on a good day is 1 hr 50 and on a horrendous day - 4hrs 30. Always good to, er, leave in good time and here's hoping Just Stop Oil hasn't opened a South East Asia branch........

Round up of last Saturday

Aveley topple Hornchurch, whilst Potters Bar Town and Bishop's Stortford also manage single goal triumphs. Billericay bring five to the table, whilst we've four goals for Canvey and Hastings.

Last Saturday we again boarded a leadership merry-go-round at the top of the Premier Division, with Potters Bar Town taking charge once more. We knew that our leaders at kick off, Hornchurch, faced a tough task as they travelled to face fifth place Aveley - and the two were level on points after Saturday as the Millers scored the only goal of the game. It arrived fourteen minutes from time, Kenny Aileru finding the corner of the net.

Potters Bar Town welcomed Bowers & Pitsea to the Lantern Stadium. The Scholars fell to defeat at Horsham last weekend, but must have been confident, particularly as they defeated Bowers twice last season. The Essex side aren’t particularly easy to beat, however, having drawn almost half of their matches so far- and it looked like they had yet another draw until Nick Dembele, a revelation since arriving from Bognor a few weeks ago, scored for the third match in a row, this one coming just six minutes from time.

Bishop’s Stortford saw their long, long unbeaten run come to an end at Canvey Island, but the Blues couldn’t blame the Manager of the Month curse as they were only notified of that honour two days later! They welcomed Kingstonian, and again, we had but one goal - this one coming just before the half hour to the Blues number nine, Oliver Peters, who met a headed defensive clearance with a volley on the edge of the box and found the back of the visitors net.

Enfield Town travelled to take on one of our form sides, Carshalton Athletic their hosts. The

Towners were five unbeaten in all competitions, and won both encounters against the Robins last season - and they did it again at Colston Avenue. Sam Youngs gave them a great start in the seventh minute, Jake Cass doubling their advantage midway through the first half. Ten minutes after the break Tom Beere gave the hosts hope, halving the deficit, but it didn’t remain halved for long as an own goal just three minutes later made sure of the points for the Towners.

Fresh from halting Stortford’s unbeaten run, Canvey Island travelled to face managerless and second bottom Herne Bay. The Gulls are having a fine campaign, their first since promotion, and seemed to be over their mini-blip, having won their last two games without conceding a goal and whilst scoring five. They made it nine points from nine despite falling behind on fifteen minutes - Marcel Barrington’s fifth of the season for Bay. Joe Paxman levelled for the Gulls just after the half hour, and twelve minutes after the restart Odei Martin Sorondo put them ahead. Charlie Edwards then got in on the act and added two more to clinch a four-one win.

Lewes and Cray Wanderers met at the Dripping Pan, and couldn’t manage a goal between them. They did manage a red card, Mitch Chapman departing in sixty four minutes for the visitors, but that was the extent of the excitement. The Rooks are eight games unbeaten, the Wands take their unbeaten run to six matches.

Billericay Town seemed to have suddenly hit a bump in the road, but they avoided any potholes provided by the visit of Horsham by triumphing in an eight goal thriller. Within thirty one minutes the hosts were four goals to the good, Michael Chambers, Chris Dickson (2) and Bradley Stevenson with those, but the Hornets finally awoke, and got three back in an eleven minute

HISTORY

Chippenham Town Football Club has been in existence since 1873.

After building a firm foundation for the modern game during the 1980s with many capital projects, the present structure was formed in 1996. A historic cup run saw the club appear in the last FA Vase game at the old Wembley Stadium in May 2000 and although the Bluebirds failed to lift the trophy in front of over 20,000 supporters, this acted as a springboard for both on and off field growth.

There were back-to-back promotions from the Western League into the Southern League and then the Southern League Premier Division. Progress faltered slightly in 2003/2004 when the Bluebirds failed to gain promotion to the new Conference South following reorganisation of Grass Roots football. This together with a general change in leadership at the club both on and off the pitch meant that for a while consolidation was the name of the game. The following season, however, things settled down and the team topped the Premier Division almost all year. Gates reflected this success with an average attendance of 634 and a spectacular local derby game against Bath City attracted over 1,600 people. The final play-off at Hardenhuish Park saw almost 2,000 people watch the Bluebirds narrowly miss promotion by the odd goal.

Season 2005/2006 saw a change of managers and almost a new team but despite this the Club had an unprecedented season reaching the first-round proper of the FA Cup for the first time since 1951. Although the replay with Worcester City was lost and a chance to entertain Huddersfield at home in the second round

with TV rights guaranteed, the Bluebirds still attracted a capacity crowd of over 2,800 most of whom were home supporters. Once again, the side was in the top five of the League all year and only denied promotion to the Conference South by a last-minute goal in the play-off final.

Although the Club encountered a few hurdles in the 2006/2007 season, the next saw a very young side again reach the play-offs only to lose once more by the odd goal this time to Halesowen after the original tie was abandoned due to the wet conditions with the Bluebirds leading 3-2. In season 2009-2010, a superb end of season run (including a final day victory over champions Farnborough) saw the Bluebirds finish third. A 2-0 play off semi-final victory over Hednesford Town saw yet another final play-off, this time at Nuneaton. The Bluebirds took a 1-0 lead but the hosts equalised from a wrongly awarded corner. Extra time saw Nuneaton grab a 2-1 victory in front of over 3,000 fans. Thus, Chippenham Town had reached the play-offs four times in six seasons but had yet to win promotion to the then Conference South. In 2010-2011, the Bluebirds finished seventh whilst in 2011-2012, a disappointing eleventh place was achieved.

The start of the 2012-2013 season saw exciting changes at Hardenhuish Park with the formation of feeder club Chippenham Park along with a youthful Park reserve side. Manager of the previous six seasons, Adie Mings, became Director of Football and Nathan Rudge was appointed player-manager along with his assistant Richard Fey. Mings left his position before Christmas to take up a scouting role with Chelsea FC. On the field, the team had a mixed season. A late goal at Gloucester

City saw them miss out on a possible first round FA Cup tie with Leyton Orient whilst a 17-match winless run threatened relegation until six victories in their last seven matches saw the Bluebirds finish nine points above the relegation area and in fifteenth place. The season was also notable for goalkeeper Conor Thompson moving to Torquay United and Tyrone Mings being snapped up by Ipswich Town.

The 2013-14 season began disappointingly with manager, Nathan Rudge, resigning after defeats in the first two games. Steve Winter took charge. However, as results did not improve, the Board decided to seek a new manager and, in November 2013, appointed Mark Collier with Tom Jones as his assistant. From then on, the team settled down with Mark making various changes but, after such a very difficult start, it was hard to pick up desperately needed points and the Bluebirds always hovered just above the relegation zone. Matters were made even worse when Rob Dean suffered a horrific knee injury at Hungerford Town towards the end of the season. Thankfully, the Club managed to retain its place in the Premier Division.

Season 2014-15 saw further rebuilding of the Bluebirds’ squad and, later in the season, the return of past Club favourite, Charlie Griffin, marking his third spell with the Club. A series of player injuries affected league position in the first half of the season but a better second half meant an eventual eleventh place finish, a considerable improvement on the previous two seasons when relegation threatened.

Season 2015-2016 saw another improvement with League Two side Newport County's skipper Andy Sandell joining the Bluebirds in close season. Sandell went on to become the Southern Premier Division's golden boot winner and was joined up front mid-season by the returning Alan Griffin. The Bluebirds recorded an early morale boosting victory at eventual champions Poole Town and their good form continued into the New Year heading the table. The Bluebirds also reached the fourth qualifying round of the FA cup where they went out 0-2 at home to Maidstone United who went on to win promotion from Conference South. However, a very poor March where they only picked up three points from six games saw them fade away to eighth place, albeit another improvement on the previous season. The 2016-2017 season saw most of the previous year’s squad retained and manager Mark Collier and his

assistant Tom Jones spent a very busy close season adding some impressive additions with the aim of finishing in a play-off position. A superb run of twentythree unbeaten games from November to Easter saw the Bluebirds crowned champions on Good Friday without kicking a ball as rivals Leamington failed to win at Biggleswade. The following day, Easter Saturday, saw 1146 fans celebrate promotion to National League (South) after sixteen seasons in the Southern League, fifteen in the Premier Division. Sandell was the Southern Premier Division's golden boot winner for the second successive season.

Season 2017-2018, the first in the National League South, was about consolidation as the side adjusted to a markedly different pace and quality of football. Changes in the management team also ensued and having hovered around the lower positions for some weeks, a late run of form meant the Bluebirds finished their first season in a creditable thirteenth place. In the Wilts County FA Senior Cup, performances ensured an appearance in the final of the competition against Highworth Town. The game, played at the Swindon Town FC’s County Ground, saw the Bluebirds lift a second piece of silverware in successive seasons, courtesy of a 3-0 win.

Season 2018-2019 was the Bluebirds second season in the National League South with consolidation and avoiding 'second season syndrome' the main aim. Things were not helped with injuries or unavailability to eight key players, several of them long term but despite that we again finished thirteenth in the League with one more point than our inaugural season. The biggest disappointment occurred in the FA Cup. Having held National League side Maidenhead United to a 1-1 fourth qualifying round draw, we lost the replay in Berkshire 1-0 after seeing two goals harshly ruled out for offside and being reduced to ten players. Hence, we also missed out on a lucrative televised home tie against high flying Portsmouth in the First Round Proper.

The 2019/20 season saw our one hundredth season at the Thornbury Surfacing Ltd Stadium Hardenhuish Park, having first kicked off here on 20 September 1919 when we played Spencer Moulton, the game ending in a 2-2 draw with gate receipts of £10! Despite a good run to the First Round Proper in the 2019/20 Emirates FA Cup where a 3-0 home defeat against Northampton Town

ended the Club’s interest, ongoing League performance was worrying with the Bluebirds hovering just above the relegation positions. It was decided a change of management was due and in early 2020, Mark Collier, who had managed the side for some six years, was replaced by Mike Cook and his team. This change injected a new impetus and after a shaky first couple of games under the new manager, the Bluebirds went on an unbeaten seven game run lifting them to twelfth place before the season prematurely ended on 16 March due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the last game of the season turning out to be a creditable single goal home draw against the eventual National League South champions, Wealdstone. Final resolution of the league, on a points per game system, however, reduced the club to fourteenth slot.

Summer 2020 witnessed the Coronavirus pandemic’s grip tightening. Eventually, the season commenced in October albeit with games played behind closed doors and clubs having to develop Covid protocols governing the conduct of fixtures and the safe return of spectators. The situation eased sufficiently to allow restricted numbers of spectators to attend the Boxing Day home fixture with local rivals, Bath City, before a second Government lockdown meant behind closed door fixtures resumed. The ongoing financial impact caused by the absence of fans coupled with a cessation of Government grant funding at the end of 2020, meant that several National League member clubs, including Chippenham Town, found themselves increasingly financially unable to fulfil their 2021 fixtures. The Club was eventually charged under National League Rule 8.39 for failing to fulfil four fixtures and subsequently fined £8,000 with a suspended 8-point deduction carried over to season 2021/22 in the event of a similar breach. In the worsening financial climate, the National League asked member clubs to vote on the continuance of the

season. The National Division continued whilst North and South Divisions were ultimately declared “null and void”. This declaration did not negate the Rule 8.39 sanctions which the Club took to a FA Appeal hearing but lost.

Season 2021/22 witnessed the return of a full league programme and culminated in the Club’s highest ever place, finishing seventh in the National League South and clinching the final play-off place in the last game of the season. But before that happened, a change of management with a handful of games to go saw the departure of Mike Cook and his assistants. Ex-Bluebird, Gary Horgan, was invited to take over as manager and Matt Coupe was subsequently appointed his assistant. A tough run-in lay ahead with the Bluebirds having to play virtually all the sides in the play-off positions. To secure their own play-off finals place, they needed to win at Havant & Waterlooville while the home team needed a minimum of a draw. A 0-2 victory for the Bluebirds saw them justifiably steal seventh place to earn an away play-off Eliminator at Dartford. On a Thursday evening, a tight game with no score at ninety minutes and still goalless after extra time, went to penalties which the Bluebirds eventually won 2-3. No respite, though, as three days later they were back to Kent for the play-off Semi-Final at Ebbsfleet Utd. Another heroic performance saw the goals once again remain stubbornly absent at ninety minutes and another extra time loomed. This time, however, the lottery of the penalties was avoided as Ebbsfleet, in the first half of extra time, scored the only goal of the game to earn themselves a place in the play-off Final. So, a hugely successful season for the Bluebirds was over but this was one for which they could be justifiably proud.

Caine is a product of Chippenham Town’s Academy. He made several first team appearances in season 2021/22 before securing a place in the first team squad for season 2022/23.

Alex first signed for Chippenham Town in February 2020 joining the Club from Hereford. His previous clubs included Swansea City and Rotherham Utd with loan spells at Plymouth Argyle, Forest Green Rovers, York City and Weston-super-Mare.

NOAH COPPIN Midfielder (dob 23 Oct 01)

Another product of Chippenham Town’s Academy and having made several first team appearances in season 2021/22, he too has secured a place in the first team squad for season 2022/23.

ALEFE SANTOS D’ABADIA Midfielder (1 Mar 95)

Alefe first joined Chippenham Town for season 2021/22. He began his career at Stoke City before joining Bristol Rovers in Summer 2011 making his professional debut the following year. In 2014, he joined Derby County his time there including loan spells with Notts County and Eastleigh before he signed for Yeovil in 2017 and subsequently Aldershot in 2019. Daniel signed for Chippenham Town on a two-year deal in Summer 2021 from Cardiff City having joined the Welsh side from Liverpool in the Summer of 2018. He is a Welsh youth international forward. His goals for Cymru Premier side Penybont during the 2019/20 season, helped them avoid relegation.

Callum first joined Chippenham Town in November 2018 on loan from Bradford City. He signed permanently on non-contract terms for the 2019/20 season and has now committed to a fifth season (22/23) with the Club.

Spencer signed for Chippenham Town in Summer 2020 after six seasons and more than 140 appearances across the back line for Gloucester City. He is a former Cheltenham Town trainee.

A superb Kenny Pogue strike at the start of the second-half secured Hastings United a one-nil away win at National League South side Chippenham Town.

Against a side two divisions higher, this was a thoroughly deserved victory to put the ‘U’s into the hat for the next round of the FA Cup. United created the better chances in a scoreless first-half with Gary Elphick and Sam Hasler both going close, but they were indebted to goalkeeper Louis Rogers’ save in the first minute after the restart for maintaining parity. Then came Pogue’s wonderful goal and although the home side huffed and puffed for the remaining 40 minutes, United kept them at arm’s length to assure themselves of a seventh straight win, and a continued FA Cup run.

They must have got their hopes up when Stevenson saw red for Billericay twenty minutes into the second half, but it was the ten men who pushed on, Alfie Cerulli getting what proved to be the final goal of the game.

Haringey Borough had celebrated a tremendous last seven days, putting three past Folkestone Invicta the previous Saturday and following that by scoring five against Kingstonian in midweek. Those results meant nothing to hosts Hastings United, however, the Pilot Field crowd treated to a sterling second half comeback. Johnny Ashman gave Borough a half time lead, but on sixty nine minutes Sam Adams equalised from the spot for the hosts, and within four minutes they were ahead, Gillingham loanee Joe Gbode making it two-one. The same player added a third ten minutes later, and there was still time for Chinedu McKenzie - formerly, of course, of Borough - to find a fourth. United moved up to ninth as a result.

Wingate & Finchley welcomed Margate in a Blue-on-Blue tussle. The hosting Blues had lost their last three matches in League, Trophy and Velocity Cup - two against lower level sideswhilst the visiting Blues seemed to have put their own poor run behind them with wins over Bognor Regis Town and Chichester City over the last week. The last four matches between the sides had ended one-nil - three times in favour of Gate - and there was a one goal advantage in this one, too, and as usual it was the Kent side who held it. Dernell Wynter put the hosts ahead after just eight minutes, only for Harry Hudson to equalise just before the break - and the same player dismayed the home crowd by getting the winner in the very last minute.

Bognor Regis Town welcomed bottom side Corinthian-Casuals, who look seemingly rejuvenated under new management and recorded their first win since the opening day the previous Saturday. The Rocks went in two goals to the good at half time, Nathan Odokonyero’s fourteenth of the season and Alfie Bridgman’s fourth delivering that advantage, but two goals from Luke Stokoe on fifty seven and sixty six minutes drew the visitors level. The winner came from an unlikely source, Calvin Davies charging forward with twenty minutes left to give the hosts reason for celebration.

Folkestone Invicta hosted Brightlingsea Regent. The stripes had lost their last four in the League - indeed, they’d lost seven of their last eightand they entered the last quarter of this one looking another defeat in the face, Sam Jeremiah’s first half goal giving Regent the lead. Twenty one minutes from time, however, the hosts got a goal of their own, Nathan Green with it - and in the last eight minutes Ade Yusuff added two more to give the result a heathy glow for Invicta. That’s fifteen for the campaign for Yusuff.
