Welcome everyone to The Continental Pilot Field as we look to continue our fine form again tonight.

We welcome the board, committee, management, staff, players and hopefully many supporters of our opponents Bowers & Pitsea.

Football is a funny old game and a great turn in form has really got the momentum rocking here at the club. To see the staff and players so determined to keep us on the right path is exactly what we need and something the supporters have come to expect from this group, expectations are certainly being fulfilled as you cannot doubt our work rate and dedication to deliver week in week out.

We have once again become incredibly hard to beat, that comes down to so many factors but our organisation is one to be admired. With the organisation and the emergence of some of our young players l ike Freddie Legg the identity of the club is certainly still at the forefront and you have to give plaudits to Gary for making sure our fundamentals are in place.

Last weekend was huge for us as a club with our Men’s team picking up a fine victory against another playoff chasing team and our Women’s team keeping their unbeaten league run going with a win against another unbeaten side Ashford United. The top of the table clash was won 4-1 and in truth never looked overly troubled. The key will be now pushing forward and keeping that momentum going.

I have a lot of time for their manager James Collins, and I feel he has done a superb job to have Bowers and Pitsea within contention of consolidating this season.

This will be a tough game, as James' teams are always set up well and at the moment they will be fighting for their lives in this division.

We are coming off the back of some strong wins, but not for one minute can we admire the views, we’ve got to keep trying to climb this mountain and must guard ourselves against any complacency.

BIG BIG WIN

Just like last season, the U's have to be taking points off sides around them if they are to feature in promotion issues in the next couple of months. Cray Wanderers had been on a decent run which had taken them up into the play-off mini league. The 1-0 win was exactly what the doctor ordered. Of course, every win is vital but Saturday's 3 points were very welcome.

We started last season badly in that respect but once we were winning those 6 pointers that took us on a run and a half as a 13 point gap in November turned into a 13 point title winning margin 5 months later. You have to beat the sides around you.

TRY AGAIN

That time of the year when weather interferesthis is Bowers & Pitsea's second attempt at playing this game. Here's hoping they make it this time .........

Out here in the Philippines, people are getting by with temperatures of 31 degrees. Days will gradually be getting longer back home and floodlights soon won't be required for Saturday afternoon games. I'm back first week of March and we can all look forward to clocks changing the right way. If I could abolish November, December, January, February, I might not be down here in SE Asia.

Having said we have to beat the sides aro und us to maintain a play off push, games like this evening's are just as important and Bowers & Pitsea will be determined opponents just as in need of points as we are. The wins at Corinthian Casuals and Kingstonian - two more struggling sides - two lots of grafting, two lots of 90 minutes hard work.

OHHHHHH RYAN

Ryan Worrall is an absolute buzz saw in midfield, here, there, everywhere. And every now and then he bangs in a big goal - Sevenoaks home and away, who can forget the winner at Ashford last season and who WILL forget that opener at Imperial Fields last week? Spectacular doesn't do it justice.

KENT SIDES DOMINATE

Isthmian SE is looking interesting as that part of the season approaches when up and down issues get resolved. Ramsgate remain top after a 3-3 draw at Sheppey with a couple of ex U's scoring, 2 Danny Leonard goals for Sheppey and Jahmal Howlett-Mundle getting one for Ramsgate.

Three of the four sides promoted to Isthmian SE have had no problems adjusting to step 4 football as a peek at the top reveals (see table opposite) .......

Chatham, Beckenham and Sheppey are all right in there with the other promoted side, Lit tlehampton, adjusting well though further back down the table. Chatham and Sheppey who battled it out for the Southern Counties East title last season - over 1,800 for the game played at Chatham - pulled in a tremendous 1,681 punters

for a midweek 0-0 stalemate a week ago Wednesday. Semi pro football is without a doubt still enjoying that post Covid surge in attendances. 1,681 for a midweek step 4 game in bleak mid-winter - marvellous.

Just a mention for our old bogey team, Sittingbourne. Older followers will recall how they had one over us for a dozen or so consecutive games way back in our Southern League days. They drubbed Haywards Heath 5-0 on Saturday for their first home league win since August 27th. 175 days. That was against Faversham who've

had a truly dismal season - bottom virtually all of it - till Saturday when a 2-0 win over Cray Valley saw them replaced in the basement by Corinthian. They've put a little run together of late, lots to do but they might just get out of trouble.

That 3,082 attendance here last season - a win against Haywards Heath would've sealed the title but a well, well organised Heath frustrated us with a 0-0 draw. It's unreal to see them in the bottom 4 nearly a year later. What has gone wrong?

PITCHSIDE

All credit to Simon Rudkins and his groundstaff who continue to perform miracles on the playing surface. Pitch 'science' has moved on throughout football and surfaces are a lot better. 3G is creeping in here and there and will, surely, eventually take over.

Losing Tom Chalmers for quite likely the rest of the season is a massive blow for all concerned, not least Tom himself. We're all looking forward to seeing you back out there, fella.

Nickname: Bowers

HISTORY

After the war years, once stability had come to the nation, many new sporting clubs sprang up. One such club was our own, BOWERS UNITED, started in 1946 by Bert Salmon, playing at Gun Meadow, Pitsea, in the Southend District League as a junior club before moving across to Thurrock & Thameside Combination, he was to be joined a few years later by his brother Len Salmon, who passed away in 2002 and is still sorely missed by everyone within the club. The biggest tribute Bowers Sport & Social Club could give him was to name his beloved football stadium after him.

In 1965 Bowers United entered the Essex Olympian League and this was to be where they stayed until 1974 when the club was successful in their application to join the recently newly formed Essex Senior League. As well as moving to a new League the Club also moved from Gun Meadow (Behind the Gun Pub) into their current ground at 20 Crown avenue in 1975 a Tottenham Hotspur XI helped open the ground on the day, Senior status was granted by the Essex FA in 1978.

Success was just around the corner as in 1980-1981 the club won their first Essex Senior League title under the guidance of ex Southend United winger Malcolm Slater. They also added the League Challenge Cup the following year. Before Slater departed the club.

In 1998-99 a clean sweep of all three cups was achieved as they won the The Essex Senior League title, League Challenge Cup and the Harry Fisher Trophy under Tony Cross’s all conquering team. They also won the Don Douglas Trophy for top goal scorer with David Hope as he scored 52 League and Cup goals that season.

With the club unable to apply for promotion the team was soon broken up and it was not until 2004/05 when we saw a new name on the footballing map when Bowers United took Pitsea Football clubs name to produce BOWERS & PITSEA FOOTBALL CLUB, and with a new start and a new team at the helm success was just around the corner because a strong link was established with the local community. and the clubs facilities that offered the residence a large Clubhouse, Bar and Function room Together with a ground capacity for 3000+ spectators, which includes seating for 400 in a well-appointed stand, excellent floodlighting is also an advantage at a higher level in which to play our football on. This showed that after years of being in the wilderness, Bowers & Pitsea Football Club (formerlyBowers United) now intended to take the football side of the club forward.

Michael Barnard and Barry Hubbard joined forces to try to bring success to the club both on and off the field of play.

In season 2015/16 Rob Small topped his haul from the previous season by winning the Essex Senior League Championship, getting to the quarter finals of the Essex Senior Cup but more impressive was reaching the semifinals of the FA Vase were Bowers were narrowly beaten by eventual winners Morpeth Town 2-1 away after drawing the home leg 2-2.

We finally achieved one of our goals to reach and play in the Isthmian League and we finished our first season in 6th place just three points outside the play-off positions. This followed with a third-place finish in season 2017/18 which saw us narrowly miss out on

promotion, losing in the play-offs to Canvey Island.

The 2018/19 season saw us reach the Premier League as we finished the campaign with 92 points, 29 wins, 5 draws and 4 losses with a very healthy 71 goal difference.

Season 2019/20 saw our first ever season in the topflight and although sitting 14th the season was abruptly ended due to the Covid19 outbreak. and with the upgrade to a 3g pitch and new stands, changing rooms, bar and turnstiles things are heading in the right direction.

Season 2021/22 saw us hit another milestone as we

reached the FA Cup 1st round, Gallantly losing to Lincoln City 1-0. This was also to be Rob Smalls last season at the managers helm as his departure was to herald a new era for the club.

In the summer of 2022 Ex Professional footballer Paul Hayes took on the role of Director of Football with the proviso to bring more experience to the football committee , one of his first tasks was to appoint a new manager and in James Collins the club believe they have the man to carry on the upward curve they have been on for the last decade that has seen them climb the Non-League pyramid.

DYLAN THISTLETON – Product of the Crystal Palace academy, Dylan joined this summer. Energetic fullback who likes to get up and down the right hand side.

DExTER PETER – The commanding centre half joins from Wingate & Finchley. Former Colchester United graduate. Dexter has enjoyed spells at Maldon & Tiptree and Concord Rangers.

VALCKx FERNANDES – Tall, imposing, versatile defensive player who can play a number of roles. He joins us this summer having featured for Leatherhead, Tilbury and Basildon United.

JAMAL ALLEN – Adaptable defender Jamal joins us from Tilbury this season. Strong and dominating in the air, very comfortable on the ball.

UGONNA EMENIKE – The tall, athletic, pacy left back joins up with Bowers following his departure from Sunderland in the summer. He was previously at Leatherhead before sealing a move up north to Sunderland.

MOBOLAJI DAWODU – Bola is best described as a box to box midfielder, good in the air. Was with James at Faversham last year before moving to Herne Bay where he clinched promotion via the play offs.

D’JEAN SPENCER – Creative midfielder D’Jean joins up with manager James Collins again following a spell at Faversham last season. He was a product of the Tottenham Hotspur youth-set up.

ALFIE OSBOURNE – Young centre midfielder who has impressed over pre season and been promoted to the first team squad. Very energetic and has an eye for a pass. Undoubtedly has a good career ahead of him.

ELLIOT SARTORIUS – Attacking technical player with an eye for a goal, Elliot joins us following a spell with Lincoln City.

EMMANUEL OLUWASEMO – Manny joins us from Margate having joined them in the summer from Faversham. He was top scorer for James at Faversham last season. Powerful forward who can operate out wide or down the middle.

JULIAN GIBSON – Energetic full back who likes to get up and down, equally capable of playing on either side. Julian joins the club following a successful spell out in America. He was on trial at Walsall in the summer before heading to Essex.

FREDDIE HOCKEY – young Freddie joins us on loan from Chelmsford City where has made numerous appearances for them. The pacy winger scored against us in pre pre-season. One with a real bright future in the game ahead of him.

RYAN HUCKLE – the physical, tough tackling centre midfielder with an eye for a pass joins us from Erith & Belvedere. He can also play as a centre back. His previous clubs include Gillingham, Leatherhead and East Grinstead.

WILL HAYES – Will is a confident defender who plays for our under 18 team and is looking to further his abilities with our first team.

PIERCE KNIGHT – Pierce is another one of our under 18 youth players looking to step up into our adult first team to further his abilities.

HARRY MCKIE – Harry joins us after spells at Southend Manor and East Thurrock where has played in goal, Harry is a young but strong and confident keeper who is working hard with our team.

JOSEPH OSAGHAE – A commanding presence in goal. Joseph joins us from Conference South side Cheshunt. His previous clubs include Dulwich Hamlet and Charlton Athletic.

OSCAR SHELVEY – Oscar joins us from Aveley FC and is a confident midfielder who adds creative play as well as strength and a wealth of experience to the team.

BILLY CROOK – composed ball playing midfielder. Has a wealth of experience and success. Previous winner of this league with Braintree and a number of Conference South appearances with Dartford.

HARRISON CARNEGIE – tricky winger who has previously played under James. Joined us from Faversham Town, having began the season at Brightlingsea Regent.

AYMAN EL-MOGHARBEL – neat and tidy attacking player. Previous clubs include Corinthian Casuals and VCD Athletic.

TQ ADDY – direct, tricky winger who arrives from Lewes. Came through the ranks and Crystal Palace before joining Luton Town. Started the season at Tonbridge Angels.

ANTONIO PAPADOPOULOS – all round striker who joins on an initial one month loan from Welling United where he has featured in the Conference South for them this season. He was previously at Leyton Orient.

MONTRELL DESLANDES – young, tenacious midfielder who caught the eye of James last season when plying his trade for Whitstable Town. Has spent all of this season at Margate, scoring against Bowers at the begging of the season.

HENRY DASOFUNJO – powerful winger with an eye for a goal, successful seasons at both steps 4&5. Joins from Sittingbourne, he previous clubs include Sheppey and Erith & Belvedere.

RIO CAMPBELL – creative, direct winger who is comfortable on either wing. He arrives at the club having spent the beginning of the season at Wingate & Finchley.

PAUL HAYES – Director of Football – Paul was announced as director of football in May 2022. His record in the game speaks for itself with over 500 games in the professional game along with a number of promotions up the football league ladder. His playing career includes stints at Scunthorpe, Barnsley, Preston, Charlton, Wycombe Wanderers and Brentford.

JAMES COLLINS – Manager – James arrives at the club having previously successfully managed Lordswood, Cray Valley PM, Chatham and most recently Faversham Town where he guided them to their best ever FA Trophy run last season.

BRAD SANDEMANN – Assistant Manager – Brad has a wealth of football league experience having played for Northampton, Maidstone, Port Vale and Rotherham United. He arrives with James having been his assistant at Lordswood, Cray Valley PM, Chatham and Faversham Town.

LAURENCE COLLINS – Assistant Manager – Lau has played for a number of non-league clubs including VCD Athletic, Erith & Belvedere, Chatham Town and Cray Valley PM. He played under James at a number of clubs and joined up in the dugout with his brother for the first time last season at Faversham Town.

LEAGUE NEWS FROM IAN THOMPSON

SATURDAY PREMIER ROUNDUP

Our leaders, Bishop’s Stortford, travelled to essex to take on a shellshocked Bowers & Pitsea side. Bowers were three-nil up at Wingate & Finchley in midweek with eight minutes to go, and somehow contrived to lose four-three - a result which left them only a point above the bottom four having played more matches than the two sides directly below them. Stortford had a two point lead at the top, and had won six of their last seven - and the Blues went ahead six minutes before the break, an own goal doing the damage for the hosts. That turned out to be the only goal of the game, and it ensured that Stortford held onto that two point leadand made it three wins in a row against Bowers- whilst their hosts fall into the relegation places.

Aveley were the only side who could replace Stortford at the top this weekend, but they had to defeat seventh place Lewes to have any chance of that. The Millers, who had won their previous five matches, did their best. They went ahead on thirty three minutes, george Sykes with his nineteenth of the campaign, before doubling their advantage ten minutes after the restart, Oli Coker getting that one. In between the two goals Lewis Carey saved a penalty.

enfield Town had the difficult task of travelling to sixth place Canvey Island. The Towners, despite having the best away record in the Division, were hammered five-one on the Island in the FA Cup, and fell behind on fifty-seven minutes, Joe Paxman opening the scoring after a pass from evans Kouassi - who has tormented the Towners this season, scoring a hat trick in that cup win. The gulls were two up within four minutes, Bradley Sach with his seventeenth of the campaign after another Kouassi assist, and when Rob girdlestone made it three seven minutes from time it was game over for the visitors. Canvey are up to fifth, a point behind their now fourth place opponents.

Hornchurch, six points behind the leaders with two games in hand, saw Herne Bay arrive Bridge Avenue. The Urchins were three unbeaten, although surprisingly could manage only a draw at relegation-fighters Corinthian-Casuals in midweek- but they were quickly ahead in this one, ellis Brown getting the breakthrough on thirteen minutes. They were two up just before the half hour, Sam Higgins with that one - his twenty fifth of the season - but the visitors halved the arrears soon afterwards through Marcel Barrington. The two goal advantage was restored for the hosts just before the break, Ade yusuff with his second goal for his new club, and Higgins added a fourth just after the hour mark before claiming his hat trick three minutes from time. Five-one was the final score, Hornchurch up to third.

Cray Wanderers, in fifth as we kicked off, were on the road to the side three places and three points behind them, Hastings United. The hosts had won their previous three matches and defeated Cray with a Ben Pope goal back in September, and the same player put them ahead on eighteen minutes. We ended with the same outcome as the September encounter, Hastings up to seventh, Wands ahead of them only on goal difference.

Carshalton Athletic started the day only three points away from a play off spot, and ended with the same margin despite victory. The Robins were on the road to Margate, and went ahead midway through the first half, Tommy Bradford with his third of the campaign. That turned out to be that, Carshalton eighth, Margate sixteenth.

Horsham welcomed miraculous Wingate & Finchley to the Camping World Community Stadium. The Blues knew they would need to be at their best to defeat a Hornets side who had lost only one of their last ten, but two minutes from time, with the game goalless, they were awarded a penalty. Sadly for the away fans Taylor Seymour saved it, and then the ball was sent to the other end, Shamir Fenelon opening the scoring for the Hornets. There was also time for Tom Richards to convert a penalty and somehow make it two-nil, his side ending the day in tenth place.

Billericay Town had slipped to eleventh place after four defeats from their last five, and hoped to begin climbing back up the table as they welcome Haringey Borough. The Blues went ahead with the first Premier goal of the afternoon, Michael Chambers scoring it after eight minutes, and they doubled their advantage when Kareem Isiaka got the second of the afternoon seven minutes before the break. Bradley Stevenson delighted most of the eight hundred and seventy one watching on with a third soon after the restart, although Ben Allen gave the visitors something to cling on to, getting a goal back from the spot with thirty two minutes remaining, but that was that. Billericay eleventh, Borough fifteenth, and a third win for the Blues between the two this season.

Folkestone Invicta welcomed Corinthian-Casuals to the Kent coast. Casuals had failed to defeat Invicta in their previous SIXTeen attempts, a run going right back to December 2011, and they fell behind eight minutes before half time, Ian gayle with the opener. Ibrahim Olutade added another twenty minutes from time, and when he added a third a minute from time it seemed that was that - only for Casuals to immediately pull two goals back, Finlay Lovatt and nathaniel Pinney making the last seconds interesting. Invicta are twelfth, whilst Casuals sink to the bottom despite their efforts.

Bognor Regis Town welcome a Kingstonian side desperate for a win. The K’s had lost their previous last five, and had only one win from ten, but they went ahead at nyewood Lane, Imran Kayani with his first K’s goal in his second match. Bognor hit back through Dan gifford just after half an hour, but almost immediately Alex MacAllister, on his debut, restored away advantage. Kayani added a third from the spot twenty minutes from time, and right at the end Ibrahim Jalloh made it four, which meant that nathan Odokonyero’s late goal for Bognor had made no difference to the outcome. K’s leap out of the bottom four as a consequence.

BILL FARNFIELD

The East Sussex footballing community is mourning the sad loss of Bill Farnfield who passed away at St Leonards on 16th February at the age of 87.

Bill was a fearless goalkeeper who has been described as the best ‘keeper who has ever played for Hastings United.

He was born at Bexhill-on-Sea and started his footballing career when he appeared in goal for nearby Sidley United in an East Sussex League match at the tender age of 11.

After serving his National Service in the army, he signed as a full time professional for Hastings United in August 1957, earning the princely sum of £20 per week.

During his time at Hastings United, Bill was voted the best keeper in the Southern League, which was quite an achievement because Welsh International Iorwerth Hughes was also on the books at Hastings

After three seasons at the Pilot Field, he signed for Tunbridge Wells United where Bill played with Gerry Boon, Jack Harrop, Jasper Yuell, Alan Back and Ron Saxby (who all had Hastings United connections) in the club’s FA Cup run in 1961-62.

At the end of that season Bill moved to join Chatham Town where he spent four happy years and played alongside former Hastings United player Micky Bull.

Bill returned to play for Sidley United where his last appearance for them was at the age of 47. He was also the regular ‘keeper for the East Sussex Fire Brigade team.

Bill’s passion for football never left him and later in his career he ran three very successful youth teams in Hastings, and helped to shape the careers of a number of local players, many of who remained personal friends until the end.

Bill Farnfield was an outstanding ‘keeper, a real gentleman who always had time for his team mates and up and coming players - he will be fondly remembered by all who knew him both on and off the field.

I would like to thank everyone at Hastings United especially all the players, fans and the Directors for a perfect tribute to my Dad, Bill Farnfield on Saturday. It was very touching.

If you ever think of leaving a match early to miss the rush just think of what you might miss! Back on this day in 2004 Charlton were beating Blackburn 2-1 in their Premier League clash at The Valley. In the last minute of normal time Blackburn were awarded a corner and desperate for an equaliser their goalkeeper Brad Fiedel went forward to join the attack – and he scored! It was the only goal the American scored in over 600 league and cup games he played in this country. But his involvement in the game wasn’t over. With seconds of added time remaining he had to retrieve the ball from the back of his net – Charlton had scored the winner in the 3-2 victory. Early leavers would have missed all that!
