Hastings United remember little James JOSEPH Manning 3rd June 2016 - 20th June 2018

A message from the family ... Bubba James sadly passed away on 20th June 2018 just after his 2nd birthday. James loved life, the outdoors, and of course his football. He will always be missed and remembered by his family and both his Mum, Natalie and Uncle Joe will be meeting at Hastings United Football Club to talk about and remember James. Natalie, Joe and their family would like to thank Hastings United Football Club, the directors, players and supporters for their help and support during this incredibly difficult time. All of us at Hastings United were shocked and deeply saddened at the sudden passing of James Manning, aged just two. James was full of life and already showing great interest in his football. He loved a kick around and shouting ‘goal’ when he scored. James’ Mum, Natalie has been a regular at Hastings United for several years and his Uncle Joe is a much loved and valued part of our match day operations team. And this is why we ask you to remember them with us today - because we are more than a football club, we are a family and we stand by our family in hard times. Before today’s kick-off we ask you to join in with a minute’s applause, signalled at the start and end by the referees whistle, to show our respect and support to Natalie, Angela and Joe and our thoughts for James and all children who sadly left us too early.

WELCOME Good afternoon all. Welcome to the Pilot Field for today’s Preliminary Round FA Cup match against VCD Athletic FC. We extend a warm welcome to the officials, players and supporters of our visitors. We hope they will have an enjoyable, but unsuccessful afternoon with us, and wish them a safe homeward journey. We also extend a similar welcome to today’s match officials, Anthony, Keiran and James. VCD Athletic have, like the U’s, opened their league account with two wins. Beating Ramsgate on day one 2-1, both goals scored by prolific striker Charlie MacDonald and league newcomers Haywards Heath Town a week ago 1-0, the winner scored at Town’s Hanbury Stadium by Leon Lalor-Dell. I’m sure today’s encounter will provide a real challenge. Our boys will need to be on top of their game for us to progress in this great football competition. The dream of a moneyspinning cup run starts here. Memories of Sean Ray’s team reaching the 3rd Round Proper against Middlesbrough are still relatively fresh. Finally, thank you all for your support today. Enjoy the match. COYU’s Paul Paul Hoggard Programme Production Editor

MANAGER’S NOTES

Chris Agutter

Good afternoon everyone. Firstly a big welcome to our HUFC support once again, already it seems an age ago that we beat Thamesmead Town 5-1 on the opening day so it feels good to be back at home and hopeful of another positive performance. A second welcome to the Pilot Field goes to Keith McMahon, his staff, players and everyone involved with VCD Athletic as they aim to make it 3 wins from 3 in today’s FA Cup encounter. A decent start ..... 2 wins from 2, two ‘sensible’ performances which have seen plenty to improve on as well as plenty to be pleased about. The players are fit and strong and the squad is very competitive the fact that in both games the substitutes have had such positive impacts certainly reflects this ..... picking the team has become a far more challenging process which myself and all the staff are very pleased with! Today we kick-off another FA Cup campaign with the Club’s superb track record driving myself, the staff and players forwards ..... with all of us hoping that we can get close to replicating the superb feats of the previous Hastings United teams Sean Ray’s ‘Middlesbrough’ crop deserving a special mention!

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted and serious look at football (not necessarily just football) at all levels, those who play, those who administrate and those of us who follow our various teams in this vast, lop sided pyramid of the game. At all times, views expressed are mine.

RAMSGATE 2 U's 3 Network Rail prevented me from getting to Southwood Road last weekend. I work on a 12 hour roster and Saturdays are often unavailable for football. Happily, today sees the roster reversed and I shall be here. Twitter (thanks Pat!) and Footballwebpages kept me up to date with the ups, downs and ups again of a week ago. Well done all – great result against a Ramsgate outfit including a very lively H Stannard. Early early days yet – but the expected suspects are featuring at the top end of Bostik SE. Plus VCD Athletic, this afternoon's opposition who have also beaten Ramsgate on day one and league newcomers Haywards Heath a week ago.

FA CUP – MIXED FEELINGS Yes – mixed feelings for me. The FA Cup has become a seriously devalued competition this last 20 years or so. Which is a huge shame considering the grip it had on football fans in years gone by. I think that sponsoring it has devalued it in many ways – even if monetarily it attracts crazy sums – you could never replace “The FA Cup” with another name added on as it has been for years. Just not the same for me. Today's competition is on lesser par with the old League Cup which was always a poor relation but still a competition worth winning. Having said how devalued the FA Cup is today – time to contradict myself and give the FA a pat on the back for raising the prize money pay outs. A Premier League player might scratch his nose for £2890 which is still a handy Preliminary Round pay out for today's winners. Coming second still sees a return of £960 – all useful income with the pay outs reaching serious levels in the next 1st Qualifier – 6000 smackers at stake and so it goes on and up as per the numbers set out in the next column show.

The competition is still of interest – of course it is, and waiting till the next round is drawn is a big thing in the semi-pro game. The ultimate example of that was seeing United paired with Middlesbrough in that run to the 3rd round a few years back in the 2012-2013 season. A repeat of that this season would see the club netting just under £148,000 let alone gate income etc etc. But our prime intention is promotion and FA Cup runs can end up being a big distraction. It can't be coincidence that good FA Cup runs in 2002-2003 and 2012-2013 ended up distracting the club from the bread and butter of league football – relegated each time. Having said that – we play 8 less league games this season which – handy side effect – leaves more space to fit in rearranged league games moved because of Cup success. Swings and roundabouts, eh.

From the "Ghost of United" fanzine issue 8, April 1995 - Southern Premier.

Hereford, the end where those two goals flew in way back in 72 - scored by Ronnie Radford and Ricky George. HEREFORD 1972 FA CUP UPSET 46 years ago – really? Hereford (of the Southern League Premier), 2 Newcastle (of Division One), 1 – a Newcastle side that included Malcolm MacDonald – a top goalscorer of the early 70s. And when I popped into Edgar Street back in March to see an hour or so of Hereford's game with Gosport Borough – it was at the scene of that big upset with both Hereford goals from Ronnie Radford and Ricky George flying in at the end featured in this article. Sad to say that Ricky George has fallen on hard times recently with a two year jail sentence for money laundering.

SEMI-PRO RESTRUCTURING Have a look at the two layouts presented - step 3 in 2018-2019 and the Southern League Premier Division in 1995 which I looked at back in the old Town fanzine – Ghost of United – all those seasons ago. They make for interesting comparisons and you can further compare Hastings Town's travels 23 years ago with United's today in Bostik SE. A lot of water has flowed under the semi-pro bridge since 1995 – in those days Hastings Town were two promotions away from the Football League, not that I think many of us in those days harboured such ambitions. A comfortable mid table in the Southern Premier – the Doc Martens League – was probably just about right for most of us. Rather ironical really that 1998-1999 when the season ended in post lottery winner upheaval, with the club in administration, saw Town secure their best finish (5th) at that level! As stated in the Thamesmead programme GF, the Step 3 level of today's semi-pro game has long needed splitting into 4 zones, something that was just as necessary 23 years ago. Look at the

travelling Hastings Town had to undertake then! Our local derbies were Crawley and Sittingbourne – 90 mile round trips each of them. While Step 4 this season – and next – is an arithmetical shambles (7 divisions feeding into 4), at least Step 3 has been sorted and hopefully more clubs are happy with whatever league they've ended up in – than aren't. Walton Casuals spring to mind as a club not happy to end up in Southern Premier South! And a trek down to Tiverton last weekend where a 5-1 drubbing awaited Casuals must have confirmed that. At 510 miles there and back in 2002-2003, that Southern Premier visit to Ladysmead is my longest haul to an away game featuring Town and United.

This is just about how Step 3 of the semi pro game is laid out now that's the level above United.

TODAY’S VISITORS VCD Athletic FC is one of only a few clubs to have originated during the Great War when, in 1916 it was formed by workers employed at the Vickers armaments factory in Crayford. The Company originally played only inter-departmental games until it was decided that the best players from the various sections would be elected to represent the firm. The club have played at the firm's sports ground, Oakwood, in Old Road, Crayford, from the outset right up to the present time, except for eight seasons spent ground sharing whilst trying to get permission for the erection of floodlights. In the early days, only friendly matches were played as there were no official competitions during the war years, and records show that a club called Vickers (Erith) joined the re-formed Kent League in 1919, changing their name to Vickers (Crayford) a year later. In their first season in the Kent League they visited Maidstone United on Boxing Day and played in front of a crowd of 13,500. The Vickers team that day contained seven Arsenal players who were finishing off their war service. Two years later, Vickers joined the Dartford & District League, followed by entry into the newly formed Kent Amateur League, Division One in 1923. Their first trophies came in 1927, the Kent FA Junior Cup and the Kent Benevolent Cup. It was a further 25 years before more silverware came their way, when they won the Kent Division One title in 1953. The Kent Amateur Cup was won in 1962 and in 1964 but the following season saw a spectacular slump and relegation, with a record of P24 W0 D2 L22, goals for 25, goals against 199. Promotion was gained in 1969, but after a mediocre period during the 1970s, they were relegated in 1980 back to Division Two. A season later they were promoted back to Division One and in 1985 won the championship, gaining promotion to the restructured Premier Division. By now the Kent Amateur League had changed its name to the Kent County League and the club enjoyed further success when they won the Kent FA Intermediate Shield in 1988. In the same year the club was involved in the last ever match played at Maidstone United's London Road ground when they won the West Kent Challenge Cup. In 1993, Martin

20

Ford joined the club as manager and, in season 1995/1996 a unique cup treble was achieved with wins in the Kent Intermediate Shield, Kent County League Cup, and the Erith Hospitals Cup. Season 1996/1997 then saw the club win the Kent County Premier Division title for the first time in their history, and by a record 15 points. Senior status was awarded that same year and a successful application was made to join the Winstonlead Kent League where, in their first season in modern times, VCD Athletic finished in a creditable ninth place. The following season saw the club begin a ground-share with Thamesmead Town, finishing up in seventh place but also reaching the final of the Kent League Cup, where they lost 1-0 to Deal Town in a closely fought match. Deal at this time were assembling the side that was later to win the FA Vase at Wembley. A season later the club went one better, beating Faversham Town 4-0 in the final to bring the club a first ever senior trophy, and the season after that the club made its third consecutive cup final appearance when they reached the final of the Kent Senior Trophy. However, they narrowly missed out on more silverware when they went down 10-9 on penalties to Whitstable Town. The club eventually spent five seasons as tenants of Thamesmead Town before Lordswood FC kindly took their place for two seasons. Then the club embarked on a one year term with near neighbours Greenwich Borough, and despite the handicap of having to ground-share, VCD were consistently one of the league's strongest members during their time in the league. The club reached the final of the League Cup in 2002/2003, but on the day there was no celebration as VCD were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Cray Wanderers. The following season was a disappointment as far as the cups were concerned, but a creditable third place was achieved in the league. Further cup success followed however when, in season 2005/2006 the club reached the final of the Kent Senior Trophy for the second time. Having suffered a loss in the first final on penalties, there was a reversal of fortune this time when, after having drawn 1-1 with Tunbridge Wells at the end of extra time, the VCD players held their nerve to win the penalty shoot-out 3-1.

VCD ATHLETIC FC During 2005 the long awaited news the club wanted to hear finally arrived when planning permission for floodlights and the development of the Oakwood ground was granted by Bexley Council. This, together with a substantial grant from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund, part of the Football Foundation, enabled work to commence early in 2006. The pitch was levelled, rotated 90 degrees and re-laid. New perimeter paths were laid, along with perimeter fencing to enclose the pitch. Floodlights were erected in June 2006, at the same time that work on enhancing the changing rooms also began. The spectator stand was re-sited and extended, and further additions included a new raised hospitality area situated to overlook the pitch, and a new tea bar adjacent to the popular members bar. At the end of the 2007 season Martin Ford resigned as manager, and the club are grateful for his vision and enthusiasm over the years that took VCD from being a Kent County League side to one that was always around the top of the table in the Kent League, and on his departure the club had just reached the last 16 of the prestigious FA Vase for the second consecutive season. Head coach Dean Frost took over as caretaker manager, and under his guidance the club obtained runners up spot in the league, narrowly missing out to Whitstable Town, and then the following season Paul Foley was appointed manager of the first team, with Dean Frost reverting to his former position of head coach. Under their stewardship the club finished runners up once more. A year later, the club finally won the Kent League Premier Division title together with the Kent Senior Trophy, culminating in the long awaited promotion to the Ryman Football League. The first season was a success with an 8th place finish, but the club were left stunned when the Ryman League deemed ground issues warranted demotion, and despite an appeal to the Football Association, the decision was upheld and the club went back to the Kent League. Manager Paul Foley resigned to join Chatham Town, taking virtually the whole team with him, and the club appointed former reserve team manager Ricky Bennett his replacement. Under his leadership VCD achieved third place in his first season, and the season after the team was also challenging for honours and, but for a disappointing end to the campaign we certainly would have given Herne Bay a closer run to their title. Once again third place was attained but this time we had the added bonus of winning the Kent League Cup, beating Corinthian 2-0 in the final. We also lifted a second trophy with a 3-2

victory over league champions Herne Bay in the Kent League Challenge Shield which gave the club a pre-season boost. Midway through season 2012/2013 Ricky Bennett left the club due to outside pressures, and in his place the club secured the services of Tony Russell, previously manager of Erith Town FC, who joined with his assistant Ray Powell. With most of the players leaving with the previous manager the club was in disarray, but a side was quickly formed by the new management, and a magnificent record breaking run of 17 victories and 2 draws in the last 19 league fixtures enabled the club to once more gain promotion to the Ryman Football League Division 1 North. Starting as favourites for relegation, the club had a stunning run, winning the first15 games and heading the table for all but a couple of weeks throughout the campaign, and on the last day of the season, sitting in 2nd place the Vickers defeated Romford FC 6-0 while leaders Witham Town could only draw their last game which saw us secure the title by a point, taking the club to the Premier Division, its highest ever level in the pyramid. The club struggled for a lot of the season, spending most of the time in the relegation places but winning the last 6 games saw us climb to safety, finally finishing in 18th position to maintain our place in the division. Manager Tony Russell immediately resigned, joining Cray Wanderers FC in Division 1, taking his entire side with him but the club acted quickly to secure the services of Keith McMahon as new First Team Manager. Keith came with a wealth of experience having taken neighbours Thamesmead Town from the Kent League to the Ryman League Premier Division but, with no players at the club and only a few weeks to the start of the 2015/2016 season Keith was up against it from the beginning in trying to assemble a side to compete at the higher level. He worked tirelessly and brought in some excellent players, but despite some good performances we were unable to find the consistency needed in the Premier Division and were relegated back to Division 1 (North). Inconsistency during the following two seasons, albeit with some impressive wins against higher opposition in cup competitions saw us finish just below midtable, and following a recent reconstruction of the league we have now been placed in the Bostik Football League South East Division. With a number of new signing for 2018/19 we are looking to make a sustained challenge in the new league set-up.

Joe Mant Goalkeeper

Keith McMahon Manager A serious injury at the age of 24 cut short a playing career with Fisher Athletic, Danson Furness and Welling United, leading to a Managing/Coaching position with VCD Athletic’s U/18 and Reserve sides in 1997. This lasted for six years until in 2003 the Manager’s role at Thamesmead Town FC was secured. A successful spell there resulted in promotions from the Kent League to Ryman League Division 1 North and then on to the Ryman League Premier Division, before returning to Oakwood as 1st Team Manager in 2015. Danny Lee

Assistant Manager Has vast experience in coaching, now in his 24th year in the role and has brought a new dimension to the club from which we should benefit. Popular with the players, he has also had experience with Barkingside, Harlow, Collier Row and also had a spell at Southend United.

Joined the club at the start of last season from Hythe Town and has had a number of impressive performances in his time here. Talks well, commands his area and impresses with his kicking. Also a good shot stopper, making many excellent saves, and being especially adept against spot

Temi Eweka Defender Joined the club at the start of last season from Hythe Town and has had a number of impressive performances in his time here. Talks well, commands his area and impresses with his kicking. Also a good shot stopper, making many excellent saves, and being especially adept against spot kicks. Regan Wiley Defender A young defender who joined the Vickers at the beginning of this season after impressing in the preseason friendly matches. Reads the game well, is defensively sound, and has an abundance of pace which makes him difficult to play against. Plays in the left side of defence but likes to get forward quickly to offer support in attack, and will look to cement a place in the side this term. Previously with Croydon FC.

Mel Ramsay

First Team Coach Following a playing career with Stansted, Waltham Forest and Enfield, began coaching over 10 years ago. Vastly experienced and has made his mark on the fitness levels of the squad, which will be beneficial as the season wears on. Previous experience with Barkingside where he was also Assistant Manager, and Harlow Town from where he joined the Vickers.

Steve Wait

Goalkeeping Coach Played for Brent FC before joining Wimbledon FC as Academy Goalkeeping Coach, where he spent 10 years before going into management at Greenwich Borough and Slade Green. Went back to coaching goalkeepers in 2002 upon joining Thamesmead Town before coming VCD Athletic in 2015. Brings a wealth of experience to the club.

Kieran Quarrington Physio Joined the club at the beginning of this season following graduation from York St John University, where he achieved a BSC (Hons) in Sports Science and Injury Rehabilitation. This is his first appointment with a football club, where he brings a professional attitude to the task of minimising the time players are unavailable through injury.

22

Ricardo Joseph Defender Comfortable at either centre back or full back where he is equally effective. A big, imposing defender with great experience, who is good in the air, strong in the tackle and an integral part of the defence. Technically good on the ball, has previous experience with Met Police, Rushden & Diamonds and Margate.

Jude Adebayo Defender Signed for the club at the beginning of this season and had a promising pre-season. Still young but has pace and strength, impressing at left back. As he gains experience will be looking for a regular place in the side, but is a valuable addition to the squad and should do well in the future.

Junior Baker Defender Joined the club at the start of last season from Thamesmead Town and settled in quickly, bringing strength and height to the defence. Good in the air, strong in the tackle and reads the game well giving opponents a tough time. Also dangerous in attack from set pieces where he is dangerous in the air, using his height well to cause problems for opposing defences.

ON THIS DAY A look back at some of the matches played in past seasons on: Saturday, 25th August

1928 Ninety years ago it was the opening day of the Football League season with Arsenal and Chelsea becoming the first teams in England to wear shirt numbers to help identify their players. The two sides were in different divisions and Arsenal lost 2-3 away to Sheffield Wednesday in a day of mostly high scoring matches as Derby County beat Blackburn Rovers 5-1 and West Ham United put four past Sheffield United without reply. Legend Jimmy Dunn made his debut for Everton as they won 3-2 at Bolton Wanderers the division’s only away win of the day. Results were more even in Division Two but there were still a lot of goals, Chelsea beating Swansea Town 4-0 while stoke won 5-1 at Nottingham Forest. Brighton were playing in Division 3 (South) where they lost 0-1 at Luton Town, while in the North Section, Bradford City beat Rotherham United 11-1 at Valley Parade – the result still being league highest win and defeat for the two sides. We, as Hastings & St. Leonards, had no game as our fixtures would not start until a club practice match on the Wednesday and a friendly on the following Saturday.

1973 Again it was the opening day of the season and in the then top Division One Arsenal had the best result defeating Manchester United 3-0 with goals from Alan Ball, Ray Kennedy and John Radford. There were three 3-1 home wins, for Leeds United (against Everton), Manchester City (who entertained Birmingham City) and Wolves (versus Norwich City); Dennis Law scoring twice for Manchester City. In Division Two the two Nottingham sides top scored, Forest defeating Luton Town 4-0 while County won 4-1 away to Crystal Palace. In the London derby Fulham defeated Millwall 2-0. Brighton were in Division Three where they drew 1-1 at Rochdale. We, then still Hastings & St. Leonards, visited Hythe Town for a pre-season match which we lost 1-3. The original Hastings United played out a goalless draw with Dorchester Town in Division One (South) of the Southern League.

2012 Chelsea extended their advantage at the top of the Barclays Premiership with a 2-0 victory over previously unbeaten Newcastle United, both goals coming in the first half from Eden Hazard and Jose Torres. Swansea City were in second place after a 3-0 victory over West Ham United while Everton were another side to remain unbeaten after a 3-1 victory at Aston Villa. Manchester United recorded their first win with a 3-2 success against Fulham, their goals coming from Shinji Kagawa, Robin van Persie and Rafael da Silva. Blackpool went top of the NPower Championship with a 6-0 victory over Ipswich Town while Sheffield Wednesday were second and unbeaten after a 3-2 victory over Millwall. Brighton collected their first win in three outings with a 5-1 win at home to Barnsley. In Division Three Crawley Town recorded their second win in three league outings when they won 1-0 at Doncaster Rovers. We entertained Wingate & Finchley in the Premier Division of the Ryman League and ran out 2-1 winners with goals from Zac Attwood and Sean Ray.

SUMMER FINLAY GETS NEW BED

Last year Jo Nesbit took on the challenge of raising much-needed funds for the MRI Scanner Appeal, and a 5-year-old local girl Summer Finlay working in her role as Events Organiser for Hastings United. In addition to the ÂŁ20k raised for the Conquest Hospital, she endeavored to raise a further ÂŁ5000 for a specialist bed for local girl 5-year-old Summer Finlay, who suffers from Spina bifida and Hydrocephalus. The Club is so proud that Summer now has the bed that will make both her parents and herself have a more comfortable nights sleep. She has finally managed to find the bed she so desperately needed and her parents have shared this amazing picture with us! Thanks to all those who supported Jo in achieving this by attending events, sponsorship and spreading the word.
