Welcome

Club CEO/Chairman

to the TGS Pilot Field

Billy Wood

Welcome everyone to the TGS Pilot Field as we are back in league action again for the third time in a row. It feels good that we are now allowed to get some rhythm in the competition we as a club are focused on. Tonight we welcome back Ashford United, I would like to welcome the manager and his team here tonight in what should be another tough contest. Last time out in the FA Trophy we got the deserved victory but tonight it’s about three points and I know everyone is up for it. The biggest thing I’ve noticed in the past couple of weeks are the attendances elsewhere and on that note I would like to say thank you to all the supporters including the huge increase in families and teens attending our games making us by far the largest in support in this division at over 1,000 average already! It’s amazing to see the next generation engaged with the club and what we are trying to achieve. I would recommend other clubs attempt this more. Engaging in the different

generation of support means the lifeblood of the club will continue long after I’m here and that should be the aim for all non-league football clubs. It’s been great being back in league action and two wins following on from the FA Cup puts us back to what we do best. Your travelling support has been fantastic and the ratio of away games over home has been huge. Down to each and every one of you who has travelled it doesn’t feel like we’ve been away much because your support, the noise you create and the pride you show in our club is phenomenal. Let’s get right behind Chris and the lads tonight under the lights! IT’S SHOW TIME!!!!

COYU!

From the dugout

The Gaffer Good evening everyone. Delighted to welcome Ashford United back to the TGS Pilot Field this evening. As expected the FA Trophy game versus Ashford United earlier in the month was the toughest test we’ve faced this season (other than Maidenhead Utd), and we expect more of the same this evening. We continue to work hard and continue to pick up positive results, the win against Phoenix Sports made it 10 wins out of the last 11 with the only loss coming against National League opposition. However, we won’t be getting complacent and most importantly we will be looking to improve as performances are still short of the standards we want to achieve. It’ll be good fun to once again do battle with Tommy, OB and Ashford Utd tonight - a decent side who if we are above come the end of the season will mean we’ve had a good year. Looking forward to seeing and hearing the best support in the league rocking the TGS Pilot Field once again! COYU’s ...

LEAGUE NEWS From: Ian Townsend

South East Division The Pitching In Isthmian South East currently accounts for just over 20% of our total attendances, but some fixtures have rather large numbers. Looking at attendances alone, here's the top ten at 30 September:

1,214 Hastings United vs Whitehawk 949 Hastings United vs Herne Bay 852 Whitstable Town vs Herne Bay 658 Haywards Heath Town vs Burgess Hill Town 648 Ramsgate vs Hastings United

466 351 341 325 320

Ramsgate vs Chichester City Burgess Hill Town vs Three Bridges Ramsgate vs Faversham Town Burgess Hill Town vs Hastings United Ashford United vs Herne Bay

As you can see, Hastings United seem to be our main attraction, featuring four times - twice at home and twice away. Herne Bay’s travelling faithful are included three times, whilst Ramsgate feature three times at home. Burgess Hill Town also feature three times, twice at home and once away - the local derby with Haywards Heath Town. Average Attendances in the Pitching In Isthmian South East, Aug/Sept 21-22 Hastings United 1,082 Ramsgate 485 Whitstable Town 458 Haywards Heath Town 356 Burgess Hill Town 327

Ashford United 288 Herne Bay 283 Whitehawk 273 Hythe Town 230 Sittingbourne 220

The top ten turn out to be the entire list of clubs with averages over two hundred - but it’s worth remembering that some of them have played only two matches. It’s also worth pointing out that the average at the Pilot Field is more than double that of the next best club - indeed, you could add the average attendances of the bottom eight of our twenty clubs and they would still be eighty four short of the Hastings figure. Finally, here are the top twenty attended fixtures across the Pitching In Isthmian League for August and September 2021: 2,101 Worthing vs Bognor Regis Town (1) 1,214 Hastings United vs Whitehawk (2) 1,148 Worthing vs Bowers & Pitsea (3) 1,051 Lewes vs Horsham (4) 1,028 Worthing vs Corinthian-Casuals (5) 949 Hastings United vs Herne Bay (6) 852 Whitstable Town vs Herne Bay (7) 839 Folkestone Invicta vs Enfield Town (8) 836 Folkestone Invicta vs Worthing (9) 802 Bognor Regis Town vs Carshalton Athletic (10) Most of the stats courtesy of Neil Pilcher.

LEAGUE NEWS From: Ian Townsend

South East Division

A PAIR OF HAWKS

RAMS PICK COTTON

Whitehawk have announced two new signings, with the arrival of Stephen Okoh from Faversham Town and Mohamed Kamara from Margate. Stephen, who made his debut for the Hawks from the bench in defeat against Lancing, had been a Lily-white since the summer of last year- managing nine appearances - including one against his new club - last season, and another three this. He spent 2019-20 with Hythe Town, making twenty four appearances and scoring three goals. He headed to the Cannons from Bromley, and has also played for VCD Athletic, Margate, Leatherhead and spent some time north of the border at Stranraer. Defender Mo comes in from Margate, where he has made eight appearances this season. he can play as a full back, a centre back or as a holding midfielder, and joined the Blues in the summer from Herne Bay, where he had a brief stay, making six appearances after moving from Ashford United. Whilst with the Nuts and Bolts during 2019-20 he made thirty nine appearances, almost all of them in the number six shirt. That was his second spell with the Nuts and Bolts, and he'd also played for Herne Bay previously, making seven appearances in 2017-18 a campaign during which he also played for Molesey. He has also turned out for Greenwich Borough.

Ramsgate have just announced the arrival of midfielder Nico Cotton, who moves along the coast from Whitstable Town. Manager Matt Longhurst stated: “I’ve worked with Nico previously and I’m glad we have managed to bring him in he’s a versatile player with experience of this level but with a great pedigree in the game and off the pitch he fits the group dynamic.“ Cotton has made seven appearances for the Oysterboys this season, the last of them coming in the draw with VCD Athletic on September 14th. Prior to his arrival in Kent he was with Haywards Heath Town, where he made six appearances-with two goals- during the minuscule 2020-21 campaign, and thirty two- also with two goalsduring the longer but still far too short 2019-20 campaign. He moved to Heath after playing for Lewes, joining the Rooks after departing Southend United in November 2018. He had already had two Isthmian loan spells at Lowestoft Town, and spent time at East Grinstead Town, which is where he played for his new boss.

LAMBERT LANDS AT WHITEHAWK

James Hull turns towards Scott White’s camera to celebrate his penalty strike against Ashford United in our 2-0 FA Trophy win on Saturday October 9.

Whitehawk have announced the dual-registration signing of Eastbourne Borough forward Charlie Lambert. Hawks boss Ross Standen told the club website:

“We are grateful to the Sports’ manager Danny Bloor for agreeing to the deal. We don’t know how long he’ll be with us, but this will allow him to get some game time. Charlie is a very direct, hardworking centre forward or right winger. He will add flexibility to our attack which has suffered since Charlie Coppola and Ronnie Conlon have been out with injuries. We’re delighted to have him on board to help in our quest to move up the league.” Charlie scored three goals in thirteen appearances for Borough last season, after moving along the coast from Whitehawk's neighbours, Peacehaven and Telscombe. Away from football he is also involved in our beautiful game, owning a sports goods company.

MARVIN IN FOR THE BRICKIES Sittingbourne have a new number eight, with the arrival of Marvin Hamilton. Marvin started the campaign at Burgess Hill Town, signing on in July, and made five appearances in green. He didn't travel far to get to the Hillians, moving up the A23 from Whitehawk. Defender Marvin made nine appearances for the Hawks last season, thirty in the previous campaign, and the Sri Lankan international joined the Hawks for a third spell from Eastbourne Borough. He has also spent time in our league with the likes of Ware, Haringey Borough, VCD Athletic and Folkestone Invicta, after beginning his career in the Gillingham first team. He has also spent time in Cyprus and Australia.

Gut Feeling Simon Stoddart My waffle and opinions, I don't speak for Hastings United. Personal observations on the world of semi-pro football and sport in general.

NOW THEN At last, league action, three points at stake with Ashford United in town just a few days after the FA trophy game here. I'm sure that for most of those here tonight – and it'll be interesting to see if our midweek league attendance record is broken – three points is what the season is all about. 198586 I think it was, Cambridge City here, 844 spectators for a Southern League South fixture. 1123 here for the play off semi final 3 seasons ago – but this is a league game. 6 big points from the games at Hythe and Phoenix Sports. Ist half at Hythe was a 45 minute hangover from Maidenhead, 2nd half much better with two quality goals. Hythe are going through some money related difficulties – they can't be the only ones. Hopefully they'll get through it ok. Bottom placed Phoenix Sports just wouldn't go away, 2-0 became 2-1, 3-1 became 3-2 on that bumpy slope of a pitch but the shortest ever tactical discussion in the 90th minute saw Kenny Pogue put away a penalty to seal the win - and his well deserved hat trick. Ashford, Haywards Heath, Cray Valley and Herne Bay all won too so those 6 points keep us in touch and as for this evening, well, say no more.

FA CUP So the big distraction came to an end at York Road as The U's FA Cup run over 5 rounds terminated with a decent performance at Maidenhead who play three leagues higher in the top National League tier. Everything our boys faced was 20-25% higher, faster, executed than what they encounter at step 4 and conceding early goals in each half made a

difficult job even tougher. But they did fine, scored a well worked goal of their own and while 3-1 was a fair reflection etc etc, they put in a fine shift. In particular, the first half. The 3rd goal was all a bit weird. I wasn't the only one who thought it had been disallowed and while I was yakking away to someone - thinking it was still 2-1 etc etc – the U's were kicking off 3-1 down after the referee over ruled a linesman's flag! Anyway, that third goal seemed to deflate proceedings and it's Maidenhead who are off to Halifax Town. We bank £15819 which at step 4 level is welcome loot. AFC Sudbury are the last Isthmian step 4 club in the competition after a 3-1 win over National South leaders Dartford who played much of the game with 10 men. Sudbury's reward – the perfect local derby in Round 1 – at home to EFL 2, Colchester United. Chertsey – Isthmian South Central – went out at Southend, losing 4-1 after taking an early lead. Southend have been in all manner of turmoil after relegation to the National League and must have thoughts thing couldn't surely get any worse when they went behind. Back to the Maidenhead game, as you go up the leagues, so the rules'n regs enforcement changes. I was expecting not to be able to change ends at half time but at least that rule didn't apply. I went in with Phil and Barbara Glazier and Barbara had to have her bag searched – because the rule book says so. The Maidenhead stewards at the gate were fine but surely a spot of common sense ....... As far as I know, the Glaziers didn't have any plans to lay waste to York Road? No musical instruments allowed in which meant no drum. Which was a shame because our drummer is very competent – but not at York Road. Because the rule book said so. Finally on the FA Cup – another club going through the mangle is Dover Athletic, bottom of the National League on minus 9 points etc etc – they drew at home to Yate Town and the replay being delayed by a floodlight issue. Dispensation to kick off late if the problem could be fixed which it eventually was at 8.30, the agreed late kick off time. And Dover - bear in mind their supporters had travelled 200 miles or so on a Tuesday evening – refused to play because, as best I can see, by the time they were out on the pitch it would've been a few minutes after the 8.30 deadline. Make of that what you will.

Phoenix Sports go digital.

the background is always the deadline for getting everything to the printers, how many to print – and the cost. All this is discussed on Twitter and it's something that won't go away. Covid with all its side effects saw semi-pro clubs selling admission tickets online and they will continue to do so. Clubs were beginning to go the same way with programmes before Covid and while there is nothing quite like flicking through that glossy magazine, it is surely inevitable that in a year or two, all clubs pro and semi-pro – will have gone digital. There is also the benefit of storage. I must have a word with the likes of Phil Donaldson and Vernon Couchman about what must be the challenge of where to store all those programmes. Having said all that, we all know what we like and many of us like the glossy magazine, soooooo this will run and run.

DIGITAL OR WHAT YOU HAVE PLEASE GAMBLE RESPONSIBLY IN YOUR HAND? I do my stuff in the programme in conjunction with Paul Hoggard who, as our editor, puts it all together at home up in the Midlands. That's the world of WWW. etc etc for you, touch of a button and it's there on your pc, tablet, phone. Touch of a button and my latest GF is on its way to Paul 180 miles away. 7500 miles when I'm in the Philippines. Printing deadlines, printing costs have been a given in football forever. Maidenhead had sold out by 2pm, Hythe do a very respectable programme while Phoenix Sports do theirs online – for free. Paul does a tremendous job compiling the magazine in your hand now but in Lanre Azeeeeez makes it 3-1 on Saturday! Not a bad still off a video clip. Phone cams just keep getting better.

Yea, ok.. Whoever dreams up the obligatory, going through the motions, tick the box procedure that gambling outfits have to tag onto that vast advertising campaign – just think next time you're in front of the telly how many gambling adverts you see – whoever dreams that up will hopefully have seen the recent Paul Merson programme in which he lays open the effects gambling (and the accompanying addiction) have had on him. Keith Gillespie – ex Man U and Newcastle – did a similar programme a few years ago. It's scary. Now to try and get my head round players not being allowed to bet on football while the gambling industry has the influence it does – on football.

ASHFORD UNITED PLAYER PORTRAITS

BRIEF HISTORY Ashford United Football Club was formed in 1891 with some varying degrees of success until the team ceased in 1928. In April 1930, Sir Charles Igglesden presided over a meeting to form a senior football club in Ashford and subsequently applied to compete in the Kent League, FA Cup and Kent Senior Cup. It was around then that Ashford Town came into existence, rather than Ashford United, and acquired its nickname of ‘The Nuts & Bolts’ as many of the members were from the ranks of the engineers in the railway works.

In 2009/10, following a Boardroom fall-out, the club’s future was put in the balance following the winding up of Ashford Town Football Club but now, under the new name of Ashford United, the club continues to progress. The 'new' United was formed in 2011, resurrecting a name used by the town's football club around the advent of the twentieth century and, in the truest form, represents a 'phoenix club', rising from the ashes of financial ruin and being run by the Crosbie family with the help of members of the local community.

It was cup football that was to provide the greatest success for Town, reaching the first round proper of the FA Cup as a Kent League side in 1959/60, losing 1-0 to Crystal Palace. In the 1960’s, Town reached the first round of the FA Cup on four occasions, falling to league opposition each time. Further honours arrived with success in the Kent Senior Cup in 1959 and 1963. In 1972/73, Town reached the semi-finals of the FA Trophy.

Ashford United are currently in the Bostik League South Division. After finishing second in two consecutive seasons, ultimately losing out to Whyteleafe and Phoenix Sports respectively The 2016-17 season finally brought success for AUFC who became league champions earning their place for promotion into the Bostik League.

During the 1990’s, manager Neil Cugley produced an entertaining and successful side. Highlights included a first round FA Cup match with Fulham, witnessed by a capacity crowd of 3,300 at Homelands with Sky TV highlights. The result was an impressive 2-2 draw; the replay at Craven Cottage saw the game into extra-time with Town eventually losing 5-3. In 1996/97, Ashford drew Watford away in the second-round, losing 5-0.

Ashford United’s management team is now headed by Tommy Warrilow.

This was a much deserved reward for the hard work of the manager and the playing team and of course the team involved in the running of the football club and all it’s very loyal supporters.

POGUE & HULL GOALS SEE UNITED THROUGH

FA Trophy

2nd Round Qualifying Attendance: 1,014 Hastings United secured a place in the FA Trophy third qualifying round with a comfortable 2 – 0 victory over local rivals Ashford United. Ashford began brightly and went close twice in the opening minutes. First when Rhyle Ovenden drew a save from United’s Louis Rogers and then Thomas Fagg struck a 30-yarder a foot over. From there United grew into the game with James Hull forcing a good low save from Ashford’s Tyler McCarthy, a short reprieve as only five minutes later Kenny Pogue opened the scoring, following up after his initial shot had been saved. The second half was in its infancy when United’s Tom Chalmers took a boot to the

head resulting in a penalty, confidently scored by the youngster Hull. McCarthy produced two further saves to keep United in sight, before the majority of 1,014 spectators headed home happy. Saturday 9th October, a 3pm kick-off in the deceptive October sunshine. It is not as warm as it looks. The ‘U’s are in their home kit of claret shirts with white shorts and socks while Ashford wear canary yellow shirts and socks with green shorts. Young James Hull leads the line for United in place of the suspended Ben Pope. Otherwise United are unchanged from the team which started in last weekends win over Chippenham. Hull’s brother Dan, a former ‘U’, is Ashford’s left back. United get the game underway though it is the visitors who are the busiest in the early exchanges. Ashford forwards and midfield push high up the pitch, not allowing the United back four any time on the ball. It’s a busy start from the Nuts & Bolts and United are being hurried. Even so it is the home side who create the first chance. Sam Hasler picks up the pieces in midfield and frees Pogue down the left, his firsttime low cross is cleared to Dixon who tries his luck from twenty yards but shoots over. Looking to maintain their momentum Ashford come straight back. A shot is deflected for a corner which is cleverly played toward the edge of the area, the first man throws a dummy allowing the ball to run to Ovenden who shoots on target and it requires a flying save by Louis Rogers to finger-tip the ball away for another corner. Ashford go close again on 13 minutes. There looks to be nothing on when Fagg turns and hammers in a strike from 30 yards. The ball flies only a foot over the bar, watched all the way by Rogers who (I think) had it covered. It was some hit.

Having spent the opening 20 minutes on the back foot United start to move the game forward on their terms. One scintillating passage of play turns the tide. Hasler on halfway gives Hull something to chase into the corner, the young lad gathers and goes back to Jack Dixon, onto Sam Adams then Marcus Goldsmith who frees Craig Stone galloping on the overlap down the right. Stone’s cross is overhit, but the impetus has noticeably switched sides. Stone’s next pass is long toward Tom Chalmers and wins a throw-in very much in Ollie Black territory. The throw reaches the area and breaks for Hull to sweep in a shot from eight yards which calls McCarthy into action for the first time. Then on 28 minutes United have the breakthrough. Goldsmith and Chalmers make inroads down the right before Adams picks up the mantle with a driving run into the area. His low cross is mishit by Hull but the ball falls to Pogue whose first shot is saved but he’s quickest to react and slots home the rebound from close range. The force is now firmly with the home team. Chalmers almost pressurises a defender into an own goal with low near post cross, then after another Black long throw is half cleared, Hasler strikes a low shot through a crowd of players which hits McCarthy’s legs to prevent a second goal. Not sure how much Ashford’s goalkeeper knew about his ‘save’. From the corner Black’s header deflects of a defenders head and lands on top of the crossbar. Ashford though are not yet done with this first half and in the final minutes threaten to draw themselves level. Dan Hull plays a great ball wide to Tariq Ossai and it takes a brilliant block by Dixon to prevent his shot working Rogers. Moments later and Roberto Ratti turns his defender some 40 yards from goal,

he runs at pace into the United area, cuts inside and goes down under the challenge. You’ve definitely seen penalties given for this scenario but on this occasion the referee asks to him to ‘get up’. In the last minute of added time there’s a final scare. Ovenden hits a free-kick into the area from wide out on the left, Rogers starts to come and is almost deceived as the breeze carries the ball further than expected. He backtracks and grabs the ball at the last moment to preserve the ‘U’s slender lead. Half-time: Hastings Utd 1 – 0 Ashford Utd Ashford restart the game seeking the elusive equaliser and they have a chance after four minutes. A freekick 25-yards out, left of centre with Fagg standing over it and he’s already shown he can strike a ball. This time though Rogers is well positioned and it’s a straightforward save.

lad on his first goal. United doubling their lead takes the wind out of Ashford’s sails and though Fagg works Rogers again with a shot from the edge of the area, it is the home side who look the more likely to alter the scoreline. Adams releases Dawes to toe-poke a shot which is saved by the legs of McCarthy before Adams himself tries his luck from 20 yards which McCarthy theatrically turns around the post for a corner. From which Pogue has a chance for his second but is off-balance and his volley flies over the bar which proves to be the final meaningful action. United progress to the third qualifying round. Full-time: Hastings Utd 2 – 0 Ashford Utd Hastings Utd : Rogers, Black, Elphick, Stone, Chalmers (Azeez 58’), Dixon, J Hull (Dawes 69’ – Worrall 83’), Adams, Hasler, Goldsmith, Pogue

United immediately go down the other end and put the game firmly in their control. Another Black long throw into the area causes some chaos, Stone has a shot blocked resulting in shouts for handball, but the bouncing ball is still there to be won. Chalmers attempts to get his head to the ball but instead receives a boot in the face from a raised foot. This time the referee does point to the spot and in fairness to the Ashford players they take this on the chin without too much complaint. While Chalmers and Fagg receive treatment United’s Hull retrieves the ball and places on the spot. He’s playing in place of the suspended Pope and it seems he’s also taken on his penalty taking duties. The three minutes of waiting don’t unnerve him, and he coolly scores into the bottom corner for United’s second goal. Every outfield United player goes over to congratulate the young

Created the first goal and almost scored United’s third. The fulcrum in midfield keeping the team ticking over. A mention in dispatches for James Hull and Marcus Goldsmith who were both exceptional. Hull led the line impressively displaying strength and a good first touch. Defensively Goldsmith was once more impassable and continues to improve the timings of his forward forays.

Kenny Pogue nets the first goal.
