Welcome

Club CEO/Chairman

to the TGS Pilot Field

Billy Wood

Welcome back to the TGS Pilot Field, this time back in cup action as we take on Felixstowe & Walton United in the FA Trophy. Firstly, I want to welcome the staff, manager and team of our opponents and more importantly the wonderful ‘U’s support. Tuesday was a bitter pill to take, in front of another incredible crowd we sadly suffered something we certainly haven’t become used to, a loss. The fact we don’t feel that so often is testament to Chris and his team, we have an aura around us and when that hits a block it may feel like the world is ending, but in truth we have won 10 in 12 games, remarkable by anyone’s standards.

from one source or reason. The club’s attendances are growing for a magnitude of reasons but the biggest for me is the talk of the town. People are talking about Hastings United again, encouraging friends and family members to attend games and that word of mouth or ‘talk of the town’ is what is growing this magnificent club. Please do keep it up! Let’s continue to make home our loud and proud arena, the positive consistent feeling around the place is unmatched for decades and really pushes the team on. Let’s do it again, let’s make it another carnival atmosphere. IT’S SHOW TIME!

Let’s not forget, the league isn’t won in October, it’s a marathon and not a sprint. We want that celebratory feeling come April, let’s take the steps we need together to get there. 1,303 was the magic number on Tuesday night, let me say that again … 1,303. I don’t want us to forget how important these 1,000+ crowds are for us, and it doesn’t come

From the dugout

The Gaffer Good afternoon everyone. Two home games on the bounce is a welcome first for the season as we welcome Felixstowe to the TGS Pilot Field. Tuesday’s loss to Ashford Utd was frustrating especially as we were the dominant side going in at the break - however we learn from it, move forwards and go to the next game looking to bounce back. The challenge is to respond to the defeat the same way we did to the Ramsgate loss and put together another significant winning sequence starting with our visitors today. We are still hindered by injuries to important players, but and like always we will cope and we will move onwards embracing the games to come. We have a strong squad and an ever productive Academy that we will no doubt continue to use over the coming weeks and months. I hope the Pilot Field faithful that turned out on mass Tuesday will be our 12th man once again this afternoon. COYU’s ...

HASTINGS RAILWAY SOCIAL CLUB We are a small internal social club within the Hastings Railway Station, we try to put on days out and social events for members of the club which is open to anyone working in the railway industry within the Hastings area, Drivers, Conductors, Platform staff, cleaners, shunters etc. Part of our constitution is to try to support local businesses and good causes within the Hastings area and today we are giving our support to our local (and successful) football club Hastings United by sponsoring today’s match. While we are here we would like to dedicate today’s match to two of our colleagues who we lost earlier this year, Paul James (PJ) and Bradley Lucas were both in their early 40s when they died and were taken way too young, both would have been here today had they still been around, Bradley for sure and PJ if he had not been on the touchline at the Amex in his role as a pitchside paramedic for all Brighton’s home matches, both have left a hole at our depot and we thought this might be a good way of publicly saying thanks for the memories lads. Let’s hope we can celebrate today with a victory. Come on Hastings!!

Gut Feeling Simon Stoddart My waffle and opinions, I don't speak for Hastings United. Personal observations on the world of semi-pro football and sport in general.

ASHFORD Ouch, Tuesday night still hurts, eh? Beating Ashford in the Trophy just over a week earlier was good but I'm sure I wasn't the only one thinking three league points would've been better given our recent run of results against them. FA Trophy or league points, I know what I prefer. And that great Azeez goal that saw us go 1-0 up, the lead up, the set up – quality stuff but 1-0 is never enough. The league still has 6 months and 30 games to go, and football being football, you have to get over set backs and go again. A virtually full league programme goes ahead today so many of us will be looking forward to rerailing ourselves next Tuesday when Whitstable are here.

RECORD GOES As mulled over in last Tuesday's programme, that midweek league attendance record has been reset with 1303 piling in earlier this week. A record that had stood since 1985-86, 35 years. That Cambridge City game, a crushing blow as we lost 3-2 after leading twice in front of 844 spectators and blew our promotion prospects with Salisbury City winning games in hand and nicking the 2nd promotion spot. Yea, Harrogate in that FA Cup run 9 years ago, Nottingham Forest in that pre season game in the mid 90s, bigger gates, 4000 plus both of them, but 1303 for a bread and butter midweek evening league fixture is something else.

LEAGUE? WHAT LEAGUE? Back to knock out football again and the novelty of successive home games. So many away hauls in recent weeks but distance wise, nothing too excessive. Felixstowe & Walton are the other side of Ipswich up in Suffolk, they've travelled around 130 miles for this FA Trophy game. A distance we were very used to in our Southern League days, we had at least one season where our 'local' derby was Crawley – round trip 82 miles. Isthmian SE – much as we want to climb out of this division – is far more compact, of course. Phoenix Sports a week ago – 114 mile round trip – that's one of our further opponents. Felixstowe & Walton are currently mid table in Isthmian North, like us they are step 4. Also in that division are a couple of ex sparring partners from Southern League days who've been shuffled sideways like us as semi pro football clubs are, all too often. This is why the old 92 club - as in the top 4 divisions of the pro game – is nothing compared to the number of grounds you can visit at semi-pro level. Phil Donaldson is up to around 245 away grounds following Hastings Town and Hastings United. I reached 134 with the Maidenhead game a fortnight ago. 134? Part timer compared the 200 plus brigade. Those old sparring partners in Isthmian North – table topping Canvey Island who we played in the Ryman Premier – they mullahed Bury Town 5-1 last weekend. Bury were Southern League South and then Ryman Premier opponents. AFC Sudbury – strictly speaking not old opponents but I'll stick with them because it was a 1999 merger of Sudbury Wanderers and Sudbury Town, Town being the side we played in the Southern League. And finally, Grays Athletic from our Ryman Premier days. Felixstowe & Walton, looking at the map, they might have ended up in the new Northern Premier League's Midland division at a guess? Whatever league though, they would be in the extremities where they are. There's been a lot of shuffling around very recently as the FA did it's big restructure which resulted this season in the debut of that new Midland division of the Northern Premier League. Cambridge City, Histon, Halesowen, Ilkeston to name four familiar faces from days past. Ilkeston –

FOLLOW FROM AFAR

Just in case you wondered about who takes all those top quality matchday photos, here he is - Scott White and his howitzer of a camera. Derbyshire – Southern League (Southern!) as it was back in 2002-3. You can't keep everybody happy with league reshuffles but I'm sure they will much prefer Northern Premier Midland these days. Anyway, distracted once again by cup football. The FA Trophy is the premier semi-pro knockout competition which features clubs from our level at step 4 up to the National League. And the current holders are an Isthmian Premier side no less – step 3 Hornchurch who beat National North (and hot favourites) step 2, Hereford, 3-1 at Wembley in last season's final in front of a restricted attendance of 6000. Hereford must have been stunned as a 1-0 lead evaporated into a 1-3 deficit in the last 15 minutes. Errr, we know how they felt all too well.

1,303 spectators Tuesday night with plenty in the Smudger Smith stand in the second-half.

The internet has made such a difference in recent years. I did see that Felixstowe & Walton have a coach full coming down from Suffolk. But plenty will be able to follow proceedings from wherever they may be. Footballwebpages – an excellent website that bizarrely some semi pro leagues turn their noses up at when it comes to posting match details. The Isthmian and Northern Premier Leagues are pretty good and you certainly won't be the only one scrolling down those scores at half time or in your car before driving home after the game. Twitter is good though it does seem to have problems keeping up and - more so, keeping postings in the right order. Such as 'Today's line up' appearing when the game is long finished! But still a good medium to follow. The time difference is 7 hours, 8 hours when I'm out in The Philippines. An evening game here is a 3.45 am kick off out there – not that I need an excuse to be out at 3.45 am. Follow United on my phone from 7500 miles away. Not so many years ago it was the Clubcall Line to get results, Teletext and prior to that, short of ringing the ground, wait till the Sunday paper came out. Not forgetting the Evening Argus on a Saturday evening of course. But nowadays – you're pretty well bang up to date. And it's all on your phone.

ALL THAT WAY – AGAIN So, Dover went back to Yate for a second crack at playing that FA Cup replay after that farcical floodlights related abandonment. And the National League strugglers went out, losing 1-0 to Southern Premier South Yate who's 1st round reward is a home tie with Yeovil.

LEAGUE NEWS From: Ian Townsend

South East Division

A MIDWEEK ROUND UP Ten of our twenty sides were in action in the South East Division last Tuesday evening, and we had a collection of fine performances and big stories. Cray Valley PM walloped six goals past Sittingbourne at Woodstock Park on Saturday, and welcomed Hythe Town knowing that victory would send them top. Top was indeed where they ended up, and although they didn’t manage another six goal haul they did hit four- Denzel Gayle in the first half, Jack Sammoutis, Nathan Green and Marcel Barrington in the second making sure of victory. That’s ten for the season for Barrington. The Cannons are without a win since September 14th. Ashford United were decidedly secondfavourites as they travelled to face titlefavourites Hastings United, particularly given the fact that the Nuts and Bolts lost at the Pilot Field as recently as October 9th, when they departed the FA Trophy. However in front of a crowd of thirteen hundred and three the visitors did their best Simon and Garfunkel impression and created the sound of silence, coming from behind to claim a comprehensive victory. Lanre Azeez put Hastings ahead just before the break, but three goals in the last nineteen minutes left the hosts shellshocked, Tariq Ossai, Tashi-Jay Kwayie and Roberto

Ratti sending travelling fans home to Homelands enraptured. Herne Bay, in fourth, travelled to East Grinstead Town. This match was previously played on 2nd October, when it was abandoned at half time without a goal- and after ninety minutes last night the goals tally was still the same! Corinthian, who had won three in a row, hosted Whitehawk, who had been rather woeful in the league and the opposite in knock out competitions. Perhaps one of the Hawks Ultras waved a tinfoil FA Cup instead of their keys last night, as their side finally brought their cup form to the league and scored four goals without reply. Charlie Lambert, Javaun Splatt and James Fraser made it three-nil at the break, and after the break, Splatt, that was that- four-nil and three points to Whitehawk. That’s nine for the season for the Hawks number nine. Finally, Faversham Town travelled to Lancing. Only goal difference separated them at start of play, and it was almost the same at the end although the draw sent the Lilywhites up a place, as Hythe Town slipped between the two on goal difference. Lancing must have thought they’d claimed all three points after Matt Daniel’s fifty-second minute goal saw them still ahead three minutes from time, but D’jean Spencer thought otherwise and grabbed a late equaliser.

FELIXSTOWE & WALTON UNITED Full name: Felixstowe & Walton United FC Nickname: The Seasiders Founded: 2000 Chairman: Andy Wilding Manager: Stuart Boardley

Ground: The Goldstar Ground Dellwood Avenue, Felixstowe Capacity: 2,000 (200 seated)

Best FA Cup performance: Third qualifying round, 2016–17 Best FA Vase performance: Second round, 2011–12, 2016–17 Record attendance: 1,541 vs Coggeshall Town, Eastern Counties League Premier Division, 1 May 2018

Ground: Dellwood Avenue, Felixstowe

Felixstowe & Walton United Football Club aka ‘The Seasiders’ were formed in 2000 from two football clubs who were independent in their own right although they had merged briefly just prior to the Second World War to be called Felixstowe United (not to be confused with the Felixstowe United who played in The Suffolk & Ipswich League) The joining lasted until 1952 when the clubs went their separate ways. Formed in 1895, Walton United played at The Recreation ground in Recreation Lane, Walton while Felixstowe Town, formed five years earlier played at The Town Ground, Dellwood Avenue. The second amalgamation in 2000 looked a good marriage for the right reasons. Walton United had just won the Suffolk Senior Cup and were on the up but with nowhere to go as the Recreation ground at Walton could not accommodate Eastern Counties League standard facilities. Felixstowe Town had been renamed Felixstowe Port & Town due to their sponsorship by the Port, but when that was withdrawn in 1999/2000 it left the Town club struggling to recover and maintain Eastern Counties League football. It looked and proved to be a good decision by both clubs that they therefore merged with Dellwood Avenue becoming their home Venue. It was a struggle in the early years after the merger with relegation coming in 2002, but it offered the chance for the club to regroup and focus on the future with a growing youth set up and getting the basics right off the pitch and the club regained Premier Division status in 2006 when they finished runners up in Division One. Tied by what could be done at their present home the club always found it difficult to compete with the top sides in the Premier Division with what was the unique task of raising and lowering of the floodlights before and after games and the restrictions placed on the club by the local authorities. The Seasiders remained positive throughout and

now have the lights permanently erected during the football season which was the catalyst to develop the rest of the ground and have an excellent youth set up comprising over 20 boys and girls teams from Age 6 upwards. In July 2017 a new pitchside clubhouse complex opened to replace the old one which has transformed the club and by the end of the 2017/18 season, the Seasiders gained promotion to the Isthmian North Division at Step 4 for the first time in the clubs history. The Reserves were also promoted to the Step 6 Thurlow Nunn First Division. The clubs first season at Step 4 saw a mid-table finish achieved, with an average attendance of 400 the highest in the Isthmian North, and second highest in Suffolk behind Ipswich Town. A number of additional ground improvements were completed and the season ended with a trip to Portman Road in the Suffolk FA Premier Cup with over 1,000 Seasiders supporters seeing us finish runners up to Step 3 Leiston after a 3-2 defeat. The 2019/20 season proved to be a difficult one on and off the pitch, the resultant decision to null & void the campaign due to Covid-19 ensured the Seasiders will remain at Step 4 in 2020/21, whereas the Reserves took voluntary demotion to Step 7 and will compete in the Essex & Suffolk Border League.

Josh signs for us having played his football at Step 3 side Leiston for the past three seasons and gained a vast amount of exposure and experience at that level. Josh is an attack minded player who is very dynamic and likes to arrive in the box late and score goals.

Billy started life at Ipswich Wanderers and has had spells at Needham, Leiston and AFC Sudbury. He’s 28 now and in his prime and has joined Felixstowe to push on and win things. Being left sided will bring a real balance ˧ˢ ˧˛˘ ˠ˜˗Ё˘˟˗ ˔˦ ˪˘˟˟ ˔˦ adding a goal or two.

Joe came through the ITFC Youth system before playing for the likes of Needham, Bury and most recently AFC Sudbury where he captained their side. A left sided defender, Joe offers composure, a wonderful left foot and a toughness and desire to defend to the back line.

noel aitkens midfielder Noel’s signing for the club last summer caused a stir amongst the non-league world, joining from step 3 Leiston and being described by manager ʵˢ˔˥˗˟˘ˬ ˔˦ Ϡ˧˛˘ ˕˘˦˧ ˠ˜˗Ё˘˟˗ player in this area”. Noel is quick, strong, can tackle, is athletic and can really play football!

Henry signed for the club in 2019 following his contract expiring at Ipswich Town, another popular young player who had also been on loan from the then EFL Championship club the previous season.

Armani played for Felixstowe & Walton back in 2016 before moving on to Leiston and then Lowestoft Town where he helped them avoid relegation. Armani has also had spells at Needham Market and brings with him plenty of experience playing at step 3 level.

Ollie made a dramatic impact when he joined the club in November 2019, signing from Mildenhall Town. “Canfs” burst onto the scene scoring 9 goals in 13 games. The fans love his non-stop running and desire to cause defensive headaches for the opposition.
